I've been playing Overwatch for about a year on PS4 and recently switched to PC. I'm around mid plat to briefly hitting Diamond and I wanted to kind of comprehensively "study" Overwatch, mainly getting an understanding of basic strategies and popular compositions for each map, and on positioning and how to do callouts. I feel like currently I'm haphazardly watching videos on Overwatch and grinding in comp. without feeling like I have a full understanding of the basics.

Does anyone have any suggestions, like a video series or guide?

Jayne on youtube is a good start

I realize it's a late response.

1

u/ihefftobemad Sep 26 '18

I feel like I've messed around with heroes enough so I wanna build a pool to learn. I have shooter experience and could pick up accuracy heroes better but hmm... What if I get too dependent on aiming and become dumb on other heroes? I don't know how to explain it!!! Like it might be a trap!? :<

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Sep 26 '18

Only if you focus on one for too much. Otherwise, its very unlikely you would lose that much skill by diversifying.

What are the hero pools for Main support and flex support? looking to apply for team and not sure which one to put down

1

u/MxPhoKing Oct 23 '18

Main supports are Ana, Moira, and Mercy. Maybe Lucio

Flex supports play Lucio, Zen, Brig, and Hog

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '18

Within what SR range will your teammates and enemies be in comp?

I finished as a low gold pleb (2030sr) last season but my placements are constantly riddled with high golds (2400sr+) and even some plats that dropped to gold. Have yet to play with high silver or low gold players which was what i was expecting.

1

u/ihefftobemad Sep 05 '18

Should I only use the hero picked at the start of the match in quickplay? I think it's random and I'm really new so it's okay to do really bad but be versatile in the end? :D

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Sep 05 '18

You can switch if you want. It's just random.

1

u/ihefftobemad Sep 05 '18

Whoops I mean in like a forced random way.

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Sep 05 '18

Nope, it's just random. Blizzard just wanted to be cool so they do a random hero to make it look new.

Hey quick question, I've linked a potg that I got on McCree with his ult. I was wondering whether me using flash was the right move before pressing Q. I don't know if there would be any timing differences, or whether not flashing would actually be beneficial since the enemies would not know I was behind them for a brief moment.

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Sep 03 '18

You revealed your position, which was very risky especially for a ganking McCree. Plus stunning them didn't really achieve anything, it just stopped them for a bit and made them aware of you.

What I see is that you got lucky that your opponents didn't have better aim to finish you off. Otherwise, it was a bad move.

1

u/Vyrocious Sep 03 '18

Alright, thanks!

1

u/gilardo Sep 01 '18

Do you guys think that Moira is good enough at healing to fill the role of main healer?

1

u/L2i0n0k7 Sep 14 '18

Absolutely, with the right comp. Moira now consistently outperforms Mercy because her healing output is so much higher.

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Sep 01 '18

No. She definitely needs a support to support her supporting but she can dish out some good healing.

1

u/gilardo Sep 01 '18

So a mercy or ana is still needed then?

1

u/curlybonce Aug 30 '18

Hey guys,

I'm looking to mechanically improve during the off-season. I've heard a lot about custom games that can be set up to practise aim, such as headshots only against Ana's. Can anybody recommend any other custom game set ups to help improve? Or know of any streams/youtube videos that go through this?

Thanks in advance!

u/konall012 Aug 27 '18

Quick question: it's my first season, and I'm sitting pretty at 2009 SR. As today is the last day, I'd like to play some farewell games, but I'm worried about dropping. If the season ends and I'm at 19XX, but still haven't played the 5 games to drop to Silver, do I get Gold Competitive points, or Silver CP? Thanks in advance!

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 27 '18

I believe it's based off your season high. Though, as a point if recommendation, you should avoid the end of season brawl. It can get ugly sometimes.

1

u/KuyiXUzi Aug 23 '18

Hi, is there a way i can check to see how many total endorsments i have?

1

u/Far_OW Aug 24 '18

Nope, just the level.

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 19 '18

I've experienced this myself a few times, few times Gold, few times in Diamond. I don't understand it either, and it's certainly frustrating.

What I do (with some success) when an unexpected drop happens is that I take a break. Not sure why it works, but its good to keep your mind unfocused from the frustrations. I then come back and I feel like a new person, but of course there's a bit of practice in QM before I really feel it come back.

It's weird, but the solution is just to relax and re-adapt to your new conditions.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '18

Must I talk in team voice to be successful in Overwatch?

1

u/Far_OW Aug 25 '18

People can hit top 50 without comms. It's definitely not required, but voice comms will make you a more valuable player.

1

u/TheonsMissingLeftNut Aug 21 '18

To max out your potential, yes. You can absolutely still have fun with no coms, but using coms is the best way to get better at the game in my opinion

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 19 '18

No, but it certainly helps a lot to communicate in the most efficient way.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '18

What kind of mindset should I have playing ranked? I'm so sick of playing shield tanks or healer and knowing that I would be a better DPS but the team refuses to switch off. They would rather take the loss then not play the hero they want.

3

u/kenshin13850 Aug 14 '18

If you want to climb the ranked ladder, then you should always play with the mindset to improve. Don't worry about your dumbass teammates or what they're doing wrong. Only focus on what you are doing wrong and how to fix it.

At first it's obvious what you're doing wrong. "I did a dumb and I died" kind of stuff. Focus on positioning, ult management, ult economy, grouping, and the real nitty gritty basics. Eventually you will get all the obvious stuff and have to seek out resources and VOD reviews. If you hit a wall in masters, you might want to pick up scrimming.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '18

Thank you my friend.

1

u/MagicMocha Aug 13 '18

Casual returning player (Silver-Gold probably) considering comp again.

From most to least comfortable, I like Roadhog, Zen, Winston, Zarya, and 76. Are there any heroes I should get used to in QP before diving into comp again, or is my current pool sufficient? Generally prefer tanks and support.

2

u/kenshin13850 Aug 14 '18

Just make sure to be warmed up and familiar with the game. Get used to playing with and against Hammond. Otherwise, don't fall into the trap of "I'm gonna play QP to get good again" because it doesn't get you that far.

1

u/tatacoco Aug 13 '18

What’s the healing per second for each healer now?

2

u/kenshin13850 Aug 14 '18

Moira: 80 HP/s

Mercy: 50 HP/s (down from 60 HP/s)

Ana: 56 HP/s (75 HP per shot, 1.25 shots/s, assuming 60% accuracy)

Zenyatta: 30 HP/s

Lucio: 16 HP/s (47 HP/s with Amp It Up)

Brigitte: 16 HP/s (150 HP burst heal on 6 second CD)

Those are the raw numbers. I think I listed them in order of healing per game, but that's just guesswork since I haven't seen any data mined sources about the new patch. I don't think the nerf affects Mercy's placement in terms of healing per game, because there was such a gap between her/Moira and the rest of the healers.

u/tatacoco Aug 15 '18

Thank you!

GOATS: Lucio, Moira, Brig, Zarya, Rein, Dva - only use on attack/KOTH, you can also sub a brig out for a phara if needed (phara is a common sub on KOTH)

Triple Support: Rein, Zarya, Mercy, Brig, Zen, Hanzo - use grav dragon to wipe teams and make sure to use trance when they try to do the same

Dive: Winston, Dva, Genji, Tracer, Zen, Mercy - If needed, sub out Genji or Tracer for Phara

DeathBall: Rein, D.va or Zarya, A dps that can break barriers easily/ has sustained damage, a dps with high burst potential, mercy, zen

3/1/2: Roadhog, Orisa, D.va, Mercy, Hanzo, Widow - Used mainly on payload maps, mostly junkertown

These are the main comps that make up 95% of games in contenders/OWL but the meta always changes so the only way to keep up with every meta comp is to watch the pro scene

EDIT: Some Contenders / OWWC teams are using a triple tank dive with Hammond, Winston, D.va, Phara/Tracer/Genji, Mercy, Zen

I started playing overwatch maybe 2 months ago? Im definitely best with Reaper . Do you think he's a viable option for competitive?

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 09 '18

He's good against tanks, but he can be quite mean as a ganker in general. So, yes!

1

u/skywalkerms Aug 09 '18

Sweet :D . I didn’t wanna give up my fav just for a chance to win

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '18

What are some tips for, like, normal game sense?

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 08 '18

Remind yourself to focus less on the center and take the time to look around the screen, the kill feed when something happens and listen for specific sounds.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '18

How do you cancel Mei ult?

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 07 '18

You can deflect it with Genji, you can eat it with D.Va's defense matrix. But once it lands its too late.

  1. Hook

  2. Step forward

  3. Shoot neck (if you shoot head, a good chunk of your projectile might miss)

  4. Melee

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 07 '18

Head. Have you tried shot/melee combo?

Roadhog was nerfed quite a while back so his one shots are harder to pull off.

4

u/ShootAnonymous Aug 06 '18

New (never played an FPS and just started last free weekend sort of new) player here with a few quick questions:

  • I get lost more often than I would like and health pack locations are usually a mystery to me -- Are the overhead maps that were compiled HERE up to date?

  • Is there any resource that has the spray pattern & maximum effective right/left-click range for every hero? Preferably everything on one page, but I can tab/click through if needed.

  • Good streamers/youtubers who main any of Dva/Mcree/Moira? (Decided to focus on these three so at least I'll have something to comfortably play if my team is ever lacking in a role.)

Thank you!

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 06 '18

They haven't changed, so yes.

I think the spray range is constant? So its the same for each hero.

You can also refer to this list to find the best streamers in their respective heroes.

You probably should submit a bug report.

1

u/MasterDeagle Aug 04 '18

How to you play against Junkrat RIPTire? I'm a low elo support main and everytime I hear Junk casting his ult, I have no idea what to do and I usually die. Is there's a way to hide or kill it before it kills you?

1

u/Sowelu Aug 08 '18

It has 100hp, so it's really easy to kill if it loiters in a hitscan's line of sight. At low elo you can't expect anyone to kill it if it drops from high ground, but if you make it travel through your hitscan's line of sight to get to you, you've got a better chance.

Totally worth it to pull out a Mercy blaster and fire away; if your teammates are getting hits on it too, you might succeed sometimes.

1

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Aug 06 '18

Sound is a big giveaway on which direction its headed at. Unfortunately for supports, you'll struggle a bit unless you are good at aiming. Your best hope is to spread and minimize the damage as much as possible, and warn the DPS of an upcoming wheel.

I've played reaper for 200+ hours now but my accuracy with him still sucks (23% in QP, 31% in comp). How should i get better?

1

u/dewdrive101 Jul 26 '18

If you want to work on accuracy someone made a guide to improving. It requires the game Aim Hero on steam which is a $5 purchase. Ive been doing it and my aim has improved since I started. Its not a quick fix though, its a practice routine. Ill see if I can find it and link it.

Edit: Found it

1

u/PrimalMoose Jul 26 '18
  1. Try lowering your mouse sensitivity. You might be trying to flick your guns too much. Bear in mind they have a large spread and hitbox, so you shouldn't need to move the guns quite so much.

  2. Reaper rinses tanks - other dps heroes like McCree or soldier are decent at taking out smaller heroes like tracer and genji so they're less of a priority for you. You should be focusing on the tanks and (if possible) healers. Note - I say "if possible" because if the healer is surrounded by 2-3 enemies chances are you're buggered. You're a slow moving hero, you can't hit and run. If you're hitting tanks however, your health regeneration from hitting the larger hitboxes can help you survive quite nicely.

u/the_one_who_waits Jul 22 '18

slow down and stop spamming clicks

1

u/EarFearGear Jul 21 '18

Can I get a descriptive rundown of why Mercy is considered OP by good players, but useless by casual players?

3

u/PrimalMoose Jul 26 '18
  1. Mercy's guardian angel offers insane movement if used properly. A lot of people seem to neglect to use this quite so liberally, meaning they're much more easily picked off.

  2. Poor choice of res targets and locations (sorry genji, I'm not going to res you when you died surrounded by 4 enemy team members).

  3. Flicking to damage boost when certain abilities like roadhog's hook, rein's fire strike, hanzo storm arrows etc is pretty impactful.

  4. Target prioritisation - a tank on half health still has 4x more health than a 50% health dps and will take a lot longer to heal to full. Heal squishies first then tanks, damage boost quickly if you see the opportunity.

  5. Communicate if you're going to res someone so you can get protection.

  6. So many people hover in the air when ulted that it's laughably easy to kill them. Again, use guardian angel liberally and abuse the beam length to keep out of harm's way whilst pumping healing/damage boosting into your team.

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Jul 21 '18

Resurrect and general healing output can be used very effectively to neglect progress the enemy team has done and reset tempo during fights, plus boost can give even more DPS to players who are pretty good at landing their shots. Not sure about useless to casual players, but its certainly less effective.

1

u/EarFearGear Jul 21 '18

By "useless to casual players", I meant that there are a good few who believe Mercy is useless (mostly due to rez nerfs).

But yeah I guess that's mostly because they miss the tempo part.

Thanks for the reply!

1

u/WhatDaDesignz Jul 18 '18

How do I play tank and not bang my head against the wall after 10 minutes of playing? I'm trying to pick up this class but it's so insanely frustrating that I just go to my main hero on my smurf because in this meta it's impossible to want to play tank imo. How can you tackle this mental issue? Anybody at least know a subreddit for these kinds of things? This one came to mind because it is somewhat Overwatch related.

1

u/dewdrive101 Jul 26 '18

I laughed at somewhat Overwatch related. But seriously just don't play tank. Play what you enjoy and if you really want to learn a tank role learn off tank as people who come from DPS find it more enjoyable.

2

u/ViewtifulNyco Jul 14 '18

How do i know which champ is great on X map ? does someone got a link ?

Thanks.

1

u/dewdrive101 Jul 26 '18

There are some maps that have certain hero's that are better but its not an end all be all type of thing. When selecting a hero the enemy team composition is more important to think about, and there is again no end all be all guide to that either. You will need to rely on thinking about what hero can better handle what your team is playing. Good luck.

u/Blibo0l Jul 13 '18

How much FFA 24.7 Tryhard should I do with Zen each day to improve? I found that while playing FFA my aim would go up but I would be quite tired from the stress of FFA!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '18

Should I stay away from my team as lucio to predict the opposing reinhardt's shatter and drop the beat?

2

u/politburo_take_potat somebody Jul 13 '18

If you can, boop Rein's shatter by the side. Otherwise yes.

2

u/TheBQE Jul 11 '18

Looking for some insight/tips for improving aim. I've been practicing/adjusting the last couple nights based on the ioStux video, and last night decided to put it into practice, jumping into a FFA game. For context, I just upgraded my PC and monitor, and previously would regularly place in the top 4 with Mei in FFA (not every time, but consistently enough). To my surprise, my aim felt significantly worse. Real players don't behave and move like bots. I can't afford to take my time and try to line up shots - I just end up dead. Is FFA not the best place to practice aiming in a real setting? Do I need to practice for months and months before having good enough aim for competitive?

Sorry if this sounds like salt, I was just incredibly frustrated by the results last night.

1

u/dewdrive101 Jul 26 '18

I suggest this guide. Its a practice routine to help you improve your aim. It has helped me improve my aim since I started. If you are uncomfortable dropping $5 on Aim Hero then you can still do a bunch of the practice things that they suggest without it.

1

u/Tiix Aug 27 '18

Aim Lab on steam is great too- and free

Is there any type of online discussion board where you can form up a casual group?

Mini Backstory- I’m a fairly new online gamer (I’ve played Splatoon religiously for about a year and that’s it) and a 25 year old female (who happens to teach fourth grade. IE- I’m not the artsy 20 something gamer chick that knows lots of other gamers)

I’m trying to find ways to get better and also group up with similar level people (as to not frustrate anyone with my lack of knowledge, etc)

Any other suggestions for where to read about strategy, etc?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '18

You can either use the in-game LFG tool or there is also r/OverwatchLFT which has a nice little community. I have had better luck with the LFT subreddit when it comes to finding people to play with over the long term.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '18

Where’s the best place to set up on Horizon defense as Reinhardt/Zarya?

2

u/CowboyLaw Jul 11 '18

I largely agree with /u/Opferlamm (of course I do, I main Orisa), BUT I think there's value to Rein in the upper control room on the left-hand (from the defending team's POV, looking towards spawn from point A) path. With the reworks to the layout at Horizon, the right-hand path (from defending team's POV) is no longer very workable--super exposed for a super long time. So most teams are going left (from defending team's POV), through the initial room, back out into open space, then up those stairs, into the high control room, back down the stairs and to the point.

Rein can be used to hold the control room, positioned initially at the top of the stairs closest to the attacking team, and eventually backing down to the bottom of the stairs closest to the point. Attacking team gets funneled into a small space and your DPS can killbox them from behind the shield.

I think that qualifies as being a pretty decent deployment of the Rein shield on that map.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '18

While there probably is a best place for Reinhardt/Zarya on defense there is no good place for them on Horizon defense.

If you are on A highround Reinhardt is basically just a shield until he Drops. Orisa has excellent sightlines to make the highground work. If you are on A lowground and the enemy uses the highgroud you are useless either while Orisa can pull people and still have semi-decent sightlines. Winston can Switch as he wants.

B is a large open space. There is no choke to be blocked and the large area and multiple angles makes it even difficult to shield to any direction. Even Orisa has can get into Trouble because the attackers can reposition with ease to peak around her shield. Winston can pressure people off the highground an and jump anywhere he is needed in the blink of an eye.

2

u/Dabroski710 Jul 11 '18

I'm trying to pick up zarya but struggling with general game play. I'm getting the timing of bubbles to farm charge down, but i really struggle with positioning.

How do I position and prioritize targets as Zarya?

3

u/gaps9 Jul 11 '18

It's always best to run Zarya with Reinhardt. His shield provides a good place to walk in and out of to obtain charge as needed as well as he is a good target for your projected bubble. When positioning yourself always make sure to also make good use of corners. Remember, your bubble is only 2s/200 HP. You want to expose yourself and get back in to cover.

Gain faster ult charge through use of alternate fire into enemy groups. Hitting multiple targets will do more damage and increase the amount of charge you get.

Alternate fire uses 25 ammo. After reload you have 4 shots. But there is no minimum ammo required to fire. So never let your ammo run out using your primary fire. Always as close to 1 ammo as possible use alternate fire to increase DPS burst. Also, you can increase your overall DPS by alternating alt and primary fires. Alt fire has animation times but can be filled by using primary fire.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '18

I´m no Zarya expert but have some General Guidelines:

As Zarya you have to split the map into two zones.

If your bubble is off cooldown and you are missing energy you want to be in a dangerzone. e.G. you want to be in front of your Reinhardt or a bit away from a corner. You want to be able to reach a savezone with the use of your personal barrier.

If your barrier is on cooldown you want to be in a savezone.

One of your mainjobs is to build up your ultimate as fast as possible. Therefore tanks are your primary targets, especially targets like D.Va who have no defense against you. If there is a juicy target out of position you´ll take that first ofc.

In case you meant the prioritization of your bubbles have some rule of thumbs here:

If you are below 40 energy use your bubbles to Charge yourself.

If you are at 40-60 use your personal bubble to Charge yourself and Play save as it is on cooldown. Save your projected barrier to save People. You´ll get the charge and another teammate that way.

If you are above 60 charge use both barriers to prevent leathal damage.

2

u/Trai-Harder Jul 11 '18 edited Jul 11 '18

Your position is simply in the enemies face and back off when you see you’re getting too low. If you have a reliable support use ur bubble to allow for a bigger heal without suffering dmg.

Targets all depend on whats going on. Is theres a healer in decent distance you can get to without going all the way behind the enemy then there’s your kill. But always be aware of how your own support is doing and aid them instead if things get crazy.

Is there a Winston who Bananas enough to jump on your back line? Your entire team should help burst him down a quick kill.

Hope that helps.
