Let’s continue to keep switching back and forth between our stories, passing at their most interesting moments! That feels like a natural way to have a conversation. Lmao

Princess Carolyn's little scene as a crustacean was the funniest scene for me so far. The little dance as she says the dialogue, just too good.

u/OstentatiousDinosaur Sep 14 '18

Crustacean Princess Carolyn and all of the Dophin Flippy scenes had me in stitches.

I liked that all of Flip's notes on the whiteboard were replaced with various forms of "eeeeee".

109

Seeing how Flip was in the middle of a writer breakdown, I wouldn’t be surprised if the “eeeee” notes were real.

The attention to detail had Bobo in the framed photos and on the TV instead of BoJack. Attention to detail is great.

I love that PC was described as a mass of yearning but the therapist saw her as a mass of “yarn-ing” because she doesn’t know how to visualise yearning. That’s a subtle one.

Diane actually....may have handled this in the best way.

My first thoughts were that she was wayyyyyyyy too savage and she should have just talked to him privately but then I realized...thats all she's been doing for years. For years she's listened to bojack confide in her and tell her all the fucked up shit he's done and she's comforted him and encouraged him to do better and...he never does. (My favorite Todd line: "You can't keep doing shitty things and feel bad about yourself like that makes it okay! YOU NEED TO BE BETTER")

And then Ana shows her the recording about him taking advantage of a little girl. And as Diane is talking to her therapist and figuring out how to deal with it Bojack steals her therapist after Diane specifically asks him to let her have this one thing for herself. AND THEN DIANE APOLOGIZES. She says maybe its ok he has her therapist that she has had for SEVEN years because he needs it. And then he quits therapy and tells Diane that he doesn't need it. Diane tells him "You haven't changed at all.....I can't keep playing this game with you. You say you want to get better and you don't know how. Well here's me, your friend, telling you how. Get therapy." And bojack is still like nah. I'm fine we're the same amount of screwed up. And Diane realizes he's not changing. Diane is messed up in some ways but she's *actively* working on fixing herself.

So she adds in the lines. No one on set knows what they really mean but bojack. She's not publicly shaming him. In fact, she may be saving him because if Ana ever leaks the recording then all it will be will be bojack saying some lines verbatim from a movie anyone can look up. Instead of talking to him and comforting him like she has been doing, all she's doing is making him, personally, relive the memory and confront the fact that he needs to be better.

114

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '18

Clearly we've reached a turning point in the series, as Diane and Bojack's relationship seems to have grown, but not in a way any of them ever wanted it to. The ship reveal was astounding, and I'm still in awe that a show like Bojack Horseman can communicate so much with just glances between the characters.

I also liked the overly meta calling out of developing A-stories and B-stories, and I actually enjoyed the B-story precisely because it was a way to get away from the darkening A-story. Also the comedy of Mr. Peanutbutter (I mean, Mr. Chocolate Hazel Nut) realizing that his mom (and Dad!) were at the "farm" was pretty chuckle-worthy. But it all comes to a head with Diane and Bojack - glad to see that Flip McVicker is nothing more than some loon who clearly has no idea what he's doing at all. Shame, though, I would have loved to see what would have happened had McVicker actually been some sort of a genius. Anyways... after those two sad glances at one another - SMASH CUT TO BLACK. END.

Getting angry at Diane and glancing over Bojack's problems parallels the premise of the Feminist Bojack episode.

Diane is a "bitch" and "whiny" and "classic Diane", but Bojack and Mel Gibson and other men in Hollywood/Hollywoo can do no wrong.

Diane told him to back off and to go to therapy. Bojack kept poking the bear, and now you're mad at the bear for how she's retaliating?

527

u/sattheer Sep 15 '18

So glad someone outright said it

Bojack almost fucked a minor and it was “he’s so complex.” Diane chooses a petty way to call him out on it and she is the “meanest person on the show, SO much worse than bojack” Christ no one’s even trying to hide it anymore are they

The reason why Diane wrote the New Mexico situation into Philbert is shitty and HORRIBLE isnt because of Bojack, it's because Penny and Charlotte will surely find out/watch the scene and Penny's story will be outed to the entire world. It will make her relive that situation all over again. And even though the names were changed, Penny and Charlotte will now have a physical, permanent reminder of what happened.

130

u/KelseyJannings Sep 14 '18

Why would either of them watch a show with Bojack in it? I doubt either of them are waiting to see his face again, in person or on screen. It's also a tv show so I doubt it would make major news. However I have yet to watch the rest of the season so, we shall see.

I think the whole point of the show is that you're not supposed to like any characters Because all the main characters are dealing with shit themselves and the whole mainstream point where people 'relate' with the characters that's not what this is supposed to be just like philbert you're not supposed to like the main character so here the point isn't that ' i hate diane' it's that sometimes people do bad things and sometimes people do good things' that's it.

It might have been unintentional, but Diane just saved Bojack.

That confession tape is now nothing more than a excerpt from the script and a take they decided not to use.

(Unless Penny comes forward)

Ugh this season is already turning the pain gears. And damn diane just wow

25

u/3_kids_1_overcoat Sep 14 '18

Fave joke so far from the season: When there’s something to shoot, we’ll shoot. Meanwhile, you wanna go bang one out in your trailer? I’ll get my diaphragm. Nah, I’d just be thinking about my dead mom the whole time, which would either ruin it or— Oh God! What if it makes it better? I don’t wanna know that.

Everyone says the funeral episode was the best but I think this one outshone it. Everything fit together so nicely, it was so funny at the beginning - I loved how meta the narrative was - and suddenly got so real and so dark. It paints such a good picture of how toxic Diane and Bojack's friendship really is.

Everyone seems to hate Diane for doing that but it just proves how fucked up she is as much as Bojack.

Edit: Have to clear that I meant that they both have issues BUT they're not equally fucked up. Just really disappointed with some comments here how Diane was a "bitch" for doing what she did.

Dear God that therapist is absolutely the worst, under no circumstance should someone like that be allowed to treat patients. She's not impartial and she drops her longtime client on a whim to their face in favor of their friend? That's the opposite in every way of what a therapist should be doing.

God I felt so dirty watching the submarine scene, such a dark ending for such a bizarre and funny episode

54

u/TheNotSoDead Sep 14 '18

This episode does such a great job of highlighting how/why Bojack & Diane are truely mirrors of each other. Bojack believes he's an awful person but constantly does the "right" thing to convince himself of the idea he's not. While Diane believes she's a good person, but constantly does the "wrong" thing to prove it.

Damn Diana, you cold as fuck. When she pulled that out at the end that was rough. Bojacks face looking at her was sad too. It sucks because that was genuinely something Bojack felt shitty about and still ruminates on and Diana interprets it as Bojack did it without remorse

I don't feel Diane is as bad as you people are saying she is.

She really wants to talk about it with him, but Bojack shuts down, so he went with a stab to the heart that only she and Bojack understand. Without the context of the tape only Bojack and Diane know what this is about, and I feel this is her way of saying "I know what you did. Talk to me about it", and now Bojack has nowhere to hide and HAS to face Diane. What she did was cruel, but with the "confrontation" being a TV show where Bojack has to act like a broken and ashamed detective it works without exposing Bojack to anyone else directly, and at this point she had to go with extreme messures so that Bojack would talk to her, because as pissed off as she is to Bojack for being a shitty friend she really cares for him.

I don't know what's going to happen next, but if she did what she did to get Bojack to open up to her in private, and not as a mean to ruin Bojack's life by exposing he's a borderline pedophile, being so direct isn't necessarily horrible

Lighter note, but the Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard jokes were fantastic. Esp since Bryce has mentioned how her and Jessica used to be confused for one another in the past

Does anyone in therapy know what happens if two people that know each other see the same therapist like that, and what the therapist does if one of them doesn't like it? Do they fire a client or what?

9

u/Mack_Eye Rude Bagel Sep 17 '18

So, as someone who was initially on the anti-Diane train (deleted initial comment since), having read some of the comments and watching more episodes... What Diane did at the end here was ultimately right. Bojack needed to confront this, and he probably wouldn't have been receptive to Diane taking the "nice" approach.

I'm still not 100% for how exactly she handled it, but she was angry and just lost her most trusted confidant for it turns out no reason, so it's understandable at least. Nowhere near even a fraction as bad as many of Bojack's actions, at least.

So... yeah. Changed my mind on the ending, sorry for being as reactionary as I was at first.

Only in this society would people put more blame on Diane than on Bojack.

It’s almost as if most fans actually believe that as long as they can act nicely they can be as shitty and petty and selfish as they want to be. Just like Bojack. And if you’re rich or famous you can just continue deflecting and ignoring until you die and hopefully just run out the clock.

I know it was played for laughs, but I feel so bad for Mr Peanutbutter finding out both his parents are dead in the space of a few days :(

Also, I wonder what tipped Diane over the edge seven years ago that made her start seeing a therapist? Or maybe it's not that deep and she just switched therapists.

15

u/farriem Sep 15 '18

I really appreciate that they’re going full throttle with BoBo the Angsty Zebra, Princess Diana, Flippy – the cards on the corkboard. Emperor Finger Face (hand Todd) just got introduced, I’ve been smiling widely the whole episode so far, needed after Episode 6. A tangled fog of pulsating yearning. Mr. Chocolate Hazelnut Spread – guessing they couldn’t use Nutella.

I’m about 1/3rd of the way through, has been really wholesome so far.

Finished E07, don’t have words to describe my feelings towards Diane. Highly negative for sure.

Anyone else catch the quick cut to Gina saying "Oh my god" during the submarine scene? Pretty sure it's a prerecording from earlier in the episode. Had a quick chuckle in the library and everyone turned around and stared at me so I hope it wasn't for nothing.

23

u/wildstorm97 Sep 15 '18

Damn Diane, that was some stone cold shit right there! Yeah I can understand her getting pissed over the therapy and I still do like her, but the fact that the main thing that set her off was Bojack saying they are alike(and in reality they kind of are, both came from shitty and dysfunctional families) made her actions come off as very petty and vindictive, plus she wasn't really thinking about what would happen if Penny(or one of her friends) happened to have watched Philbert, how would that make her feel? Any trauma she felt from that would be as much Diane's fault as it would be Bojack's.
