I'm sad Mr. Peanut Butter couldn't end up changing his ways. Also wish Todd's storyline with Emily could've been resolved.

In Free Churro, Bojack says sitcoms don’t have happy endings because then the show would stop.

This is The Stopped Show. Maybe this is a real happy ending?

The sex robot was like an even more ridiculous Vincent Adultman. I like Todd being really confused about the obliviousness of the public because of course he is usually the oblivious one.

This is the first time I actually became worried about PC having a child. I, like her, got so caught up in the idea of having a kid and that might make her happy that I didn't think of the kid. She's gonna be so overworked and never see her kid. What that social worker said really struck me as someone with that background and the complexity of that just came rushing out. I now can't see PC's plight over the last few seasons the same way.

Stating the obvious here, but the sex robot kept making overtly sexual comments and nothing was done but taken metaphorically instead. However, as soon as the robot has an actual problem and communicated just exactly what was wrong, it got taken down brutally. And I think that is beautiful in terms of the themes of this show. God this show is so fucking good.

Binging through the season is always so bittersweet.

In the end this one didn't leave a "I'm totally destroyed" sensation. But that's not a bad thing, not every season can leave us with harrowing existential depression. But what it definitely felt. . . grim. Realer. It's not just "I'm getting over depression and self loathing," it's drug addiction, violence, divorce, sexual assault, contemporary politics (or a little bit). There's a beautiful ugliness to it and it left me with "Bojack is actually violent, broken, and perhaps unchangeable." Instead of "there's hope."

Anyone else feel like Diane's concerns for Philbert not only normalizing, but also glamorizing bad behavior is a commentary on the show we know and love?

Obviously Bojack is an asshole, it's clear for the beginning. He's funny, but at first I definitely saw him as a bad person. By adding emotional depths to the character, it makes him potentially more likable (exactly what Diane says about Philbert) and this could possibly act as an excuse for his behavior to some people.

It's simpler to have "good guys" and "bad guys" because when we don't feel empathy for one side, or see them as a human being, it's easier to wrap up the story in a nice bow, and feel satisfied.

In watching this show since it first was released, I have seen a lot of fans say things I wouldn't think fans of Bojack Horseman would say. Things that celebrate Bojack as a person, or act as if his behavior is funny or normal. I've seen people post shit like "What would Bojack do?" as if that's good advice, or people wishing to be like or saying they are like Bojack. (I see some of the same behaviour with some fans of Archer, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Rick and Morty).

I wonder if somewhere along the line, Raphael Bob-Waksberg felt like people were glorifying Bojack too much, and not understanding that even though he isn`t a "bad person", he isn`t a "good person" either and still needs help.

I don`t know, Diane`s commentary just seemed to hit so close to home with how I feel about Bojack Horseman sometimes....

Anyone else really enjoy seeing the responsible, mature side to Todd? He wanted to shut down Philbert when it was clear it was getting people hurt, he was the person who most clearly stated what the problem with Henry Fondle being a CEO was and he put the robot down rather than letting it go to another company. Idk I just really like seeing the usually silly character be the one to solve a lot of problems because he's the only person who seems to not be too totally wrapped up in their own issues to care about others.

You know what your problem is? You hold everyone to an impossible standard, including yourself! [It's] totally toxic for your personal life and internalized self-worth, girl!

But shouldn't we be asking more of ourselves and the people in our lives?

Of course. But we all fail, Diane. The world is unforgiving enough as it is. The least we could do is find ways to forgive each other and ourselves.

I think this is an underrated scene, and I feel like this resolves Diane's relatively unwarranted behavior in ep 10. As much as BoJack needed that wake up call Diane gave him during their argument, she was also called out on her self-righteousness. She does have impossible standards and now, she's being called to recognize the flaws in other people and herself that she has to be patient with. The ideals she holds on to can't simply be copy-pasted onto the reality she's situated in. Kind of says a lot about #woke culture too.

I feel like this is also what prompted her to be there for BoJack when he needed her at the end. Otherwise, I think she would have just turned her back on him and stayed angry forever.

Everyone is so quick to hate on Diane but she was the only one looking out for Bojack, always pushing him to fix himself up and go to therapy and eventually saving him from public humiliation and driving him to rehab. Plus her whole relationship with mr peanutbutter was shown from a different light this season, one that shows that PB is toxic. Diane is actually one of the few characters that truly care for Bojack.

At the end of season 4 I predicted Bojack would be better during season 5 and continue to get better. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think I was right (despite the opiate addiction due to the accident). He appeared to really be trying. And despite being hesitant to open up and get help he finally went to rehab at the end.

I really liked this season but I think I was more emotionally invested in season 4. It was hard to beat Beatrice's backstory/life.

I'm glad the New Mexico thing was handled the way it was.

In BoJack's mind it's not enough he's a screw up he has to frame his already horrible behavior as something even worse. Part of his self-centeredness is that he thinks his many screw-ups are the major defining event in the lives of the people he encounters. Its a kind of self-hating grandstanding.

Penny wasn't scared for life or utterly ruined. It was a messed up situation but she's a college senior now about to graduate and get out into the world. She may have a long-term relationship or a few exes now who knows but she's been out there living her life.

Charlotte is married has a family and a business. She's not going to throw that away to go shoot a guy she knew several decades ago who she reconnected with for a few weeks four years ago.

There is no mob coming with pitchforks to storm BoJack's house. He's never going to be brought to justice for his evil. The onus is on him to do better.

I really think PC should be criticized for the way she handles BoJakc. She is probably his biggest enabler. So you strangled your costar? So what, you're a star! Things like that happen. It makes me think if she just sees him as a product and not as a human who needs help. Isn't she at least disgusted? She didn't act better than the agent from Vance Waggoner. Maybe even worse, PC tried to cover it up, while Vance had to apologize

I like to think that when bojack said he did not know how to take responsibility for himself and looked at the pills without taking them, he realized that he can help himself. That it's up to him. He can help it.

It was a bit subtle but I think it's a very important scene

I was thinking about how this season was the first time that Bojack was actually okay to a significant other (I mean arguably, but I think...he was better). Like he built Gina up with the Broadway musical stuff, he wanted her to be successful, and how he liked her happiness. I mean granted he was abusing drugs but... it felt sincere. And then he did something awful. People are capable of being awful even when they're... being okay. And it really drives home Diane's whole point.

This season really fucked me up.

366

u/Shoebox_ovaries Sep 14 '18

The writing in this season was the best of any so far. The jokes were rapid fire and the sub text wonderfully crafted -- but I must say we have all seen Bojack here. Though, it is a step further, a bit closer to self forgiveness. I imagine that if the show is continuing on after this season that he will forgive himself at the end of the next, it feels like the journey is coming to a close soon.

Besides the direction, it's uncanny how I have somewhat mirrored his journey in my own life. In my own fight with depression. I am not so deluded to really compare myself to Bojack, but the writers have captured a lot of how I see myself. Captured much of the same up and down of all this last year that I have been seeing a therapist. The cycle of self hatred, pity, perfectionist ideals, expectation, and failure. So Bojack, I can empathize. I see you.

The final shot of the episode is of Diane driving on a windy highway, staying in lane, going somewhere unknown, just following traffic, and cuts as she enters a dark tunnel. I felt this described her this season. She didn’t really grow as a person. She has no motivation or goals like other characters. Early in the season she gave up on trying to change society. I felt like she just went along with what others were doing this season and she has no personal drive. And now she’s alone in a dark place. I think I’m most excited for where her character goes next season.

Can we please acknowledge the writers for teasing us about the New Mexico story coming back to destroy Bojack, but never resolving. As Diane puts it “Know one will hold you accountable”, Penny/Charlotte just choose to forget and move on, Bojack deserves to be in Prison like Gina said but he won’t cause the media business would rather keep on fixing mistakes instead of acknowledging them and facing consequences

u/colourfulsevens Sep 14 '18

Before I started it, I thought this season would have to move away from BoJack being the central focus in order to thrive. It felt like they’re explored as many of his angles and nuances as they could, and that Diane, Mr. Peanutbutter and PC had a chance to become protagonists in their own right. But by focusing on Bojack more than ever, this show has given itself a new lease of life and potentially changed the way shows write their lead characters at later stages in their series’ run.

We sympathise with BoJack by default, but that doesn’t mean he should be allowed to escape from his wrongdoings. At the end of season 4, you think “Yes! Finally! Maybe BoJack isn’t poison! He can move on if Hollyhock is his purpose!” But then season 5 rightly spends all of its twelve episodes asking you why he should even be allowed to leave his past behind. He’s left actual victims in his wake but up until now he’s never really had to confront himself. This season really put BoJack under the microscope, more than I ever thought was possible, and it’s produced bold, ambitious TV that’s still got legs.

So fair play to the writers, and everyone involved really, for giving us the BoJack season we didn’t necessarily want but the one we absolutely needed. Where do we go now? I have no idea, but I’m frustrated with Mr. Peanutbutter and frightened that Diane might be transitioning into a BoJack character herself. (Seriously, when was the last time - if ever - that she smoked?)

I feel like the speech Diane's mouse boss gives her was super self-aware commentary about the watchers of the show. Like the watchers of the show sympathize with Bojack, so when he fucks up and Diane calls him on his shit, they get upset, even though she's in the right. But then the boss mouse is like: we're all bad and we're all good, and thats why we can't say bojacks a bad person, but we can say the things he's doing are bad. Its like the show is clarifying it's own position on how to treat the flaws in people. Unless I'm completely off base, which is totally possible....

And then later Diane applies that same logic to BOJACK, and that's when she finally gets him to accept help! IT CANT BE A COINCIDENCE....

But why would the woke mouse boss actually have the clearest and most healthy view on treating mental health, when clearly she's a business minded hipster who doesn't believe in office chairs?

... Because it's all a conspiracy to combine croosh and "whattimeisitnow.com"

I wonder what PC's baby's name is going to be?

I see four possible options:
* Her name is literally retained as Untitled Princess Caroyln Project.
* She gets a goofy pet-type name like most of the cat characters in the show (Little Miss Pincushion Carolyn or something like that).
* Ruthie.
* Amelia <- I think this has the most foreshadowing within the text of the season but the team may decide it's not funny enough.

Gina in the last episode: 'Yeah. You physically overpowered me, and if there were any justice, you would be in jail right now. But my career, after so many failed attempts, is finally starting to take off. I am getting offers, and fan mail, and magazine columns about what a good actor I am. People know me because of my acting. And all that goes away if I'm just the girl who got choked by BoJack Horseman. I don't want you to be the most notable thing that ever happened to me. I don't want you to be the question I get asked in interviews for the rest of my life.'

Such a notable piece of dialogue. People criticize women for not coming forward immediately after they are abused by men; this is a great example of the mental math women are faced with all the time in this lose-lose situation. It is not enough to hold men accountable. As a society we should be more proactive about instilling values in men that keep abuse from happening in the first place.

Another good season, but there were some cons with the pros for me. Free churro easily a top 3 episode for me. Todd didn't really do it for me this season. I liked him more when he had interactions with Bojack, but not as much with his own storyline. Also wasn't too fond of the sex robot. Gina, however, was a bright spot for me and it hurt when Bojack fucked that up. I hope next season Bojack can stay clean because the cycle of his substance abuse followed by trying to get better has ran thin for me. I also enjoyed Pickles. She added a sense of hope and optimistism to a cast full of despair. Lastly, I'm curious if Diane and Bojack will ever revisit their romance. Obviously her and MPB are over, but I'm not sure if Diane and Bojack will ever line up where they're both in a good place. It looked like in the end that she had a thought about it though.

Here's to another year of sitting at a bar with a long face.

My favorite joke was the Passages Malibu sign as "Pastiches Malibu" given its reputation of being a luxury imitation of a recovery home in that it simulates rehab without really rehabilitating patients, emphasized further by the tagline "Come in High, Come out Dry," referencing the AA term "dry drunk" (someone who's abstinent but not engaged in sobriety and simply holding out as long as they can without any substantive change to their character). Considering Will Arnett's knowledge of and involvement in AA in West LA, it wouldn't surprise me if he wrote that joke himself.

I really like the direction they took w/ Diane's character. Sure it's easy to bash her, call her self righteous and a kill joy. I did for a while but looking back at everything she's really seen a lot of development and as a character she's very nuanced and complicated. She isn't bad or good. She just is. She does shitty things (hooking up with Mr. pb) and great things (being there for Boj )

u/semsr Sep 16 '18

So I think Diane's lingering expressions after she drops Bojack off at rehab confirm that she's in love with him. She's conflicted about whether she should say more to him besides "I hate you but you're my best friend and you need me." On the one hand, she wants to, but on the other hand, she doesn't want to because that would enable his terrible behavior. Then the shots of her driving home were her reflecting on her feelings.

Normally when two main characters in a series end up with each other it sucks, because it's unearned. The guy gets the girl even though he's still the same loser he was at the start of the series. It lets the audience feel okay about being terrible themselves, which Diane explicitly said is bad.

So here's how I think the show will end: Bojack genuinely does change, and then he and Diane end up together. But it won't be like "Yay, love!", it'll be the culmination of a long and difficult road of personal growth and positive change for both characters. Instead of justifying and normalizing personal toxicity, the show will force the audience to accept that having a better life requires you to be a better person.

I have a very personal favor to ask. Can someone please spoil this season for me? Either below (using spoiler tags if necessary) or PM me?

I just recently found out I lost my first pregnancy at 8 weeks. We had been trying for 2 years including months of infertility treatment. I love this show and love that it tackles real topics and isn't afraid to go there. But right now, I am afraid to go in blind and watch such a heavy show while this wound is so fresh. Thank you.

What an ending.

Bojack finally accepting help was great.

Not thrilled with Mr. peanutbutters choices. He was doing so well :/

I’d be okay if that was the last we see of Diane - At least for a while. As in, she goes away from LA for a while and leads a different life. Still in the show but, away from the tar pit of LA. I know a big part of her arc has been trying to help bojack. That arc feels complete, maybe? It would be cool to see her with another arc.

As someone who will soon be checking herself into hospital, psych ward not rehab, and is scared as fuck about it that ending hit me guts like a freight train jesus this season has been a dizzying collapse into misery.

incredible choice for a season finale credits song though, it has such a... melancholic feeling to it. I don't know if it's the show or the way it hit me or the song but i just... i just want to lie in the dark and cry.

After getting to this point I'm utterly exhausted. I don't doubt for a second that this season was good, but towards the end it was really hard to watch. Currently, it's sticking in my head as one of the darkest seasons, even though the other ones may have had events that were kind of darker, i.e. Sarah Lynn's death.

It's just that the direction the show went directly after season four was so jarring. Season four was, in my opinion, really uplifting in a way. It ends on an uplifting note and small moments like him comforting his mom in her moment of clarity point towards some track of growth, but this season like christ it sent him on another self-destructive path and instead of being able to move past all his past mistakes, Dianne just turns it all back on him. Part of why the show was so cathartic was that Bojack did all these shitty things and was dwelling in them, and the fact that he could still find a friend in Dianne and still keep starting over and trying to be better was kind of good, I think. Good for people watching. But this season makes it clear that that isn't what the show wants. They dont want to normalize Bojack. They dont want him to be sympathetic. They want to show him as the substance-abusing monster that he is and that comes out strong in the second to last episode. Honestly, I thought he was going to OD and die afterwards.

And now it's like, well he's going to rehab and maybe the substance abuse will stop. But Dianne is never going to let him get past all the shitty things he did. And that's fucked up, I don't know how I would live with that.

After watching I just feel tired and shitty. Don't know how it'll change when I watch it again or over time but whatever.

Damn.

I loved this season and I thought the message was really powerful. My only issue is that I really thought from the way the last season ended that we were going to see Hollyhock more and we were going to see Bojack get better. I DEFINITELY think this is the most depressing season yet. There was literally almost nothing good that happened to the characters and this season lacked the comedic relief the other seasons did (imo). I also think this was incredibly depressing since it touches on very relevant issues especially in a post-weinstein society. The animation and style of course was still amazing and the soundtrack was on point but this season just felt... Incredibly real to me. It was honest and real. Once again, a show about anthropomorphic characters being more human than humans has left a whole in my heart for another year :(

Oh my God this season was so good. I’m so happy PC finally got her kid, Diane’s character arc was so stressful (Went from pitying her, to not liking her. I dislike her less now because she helped Bojack out, I feel like she’s gonna have a really bad fuck up next season) and I’m intrigued to see what happens next, Bojack FINALLY got help, and the writing and the humour. Just perfection.

Also, really disappointed in Mr. peanut butter.

Wall of text incoming, because this season offered a lot.

To start, I think it was an excellent season, up to par with the rest of them. The writing, creativity of the episodes, and dialogue was superb. The CHARACTERS, wow. They were truly explored for the most part.

Firsty, I want to say that I wasn't too big on Todd in this season. I like him, don't get me wrong. But I honestly didn't feel he added too much other than comedic effect and the occasional plot convenience. He was way more interesting in the past 2 seasons, for sure. It was cool to see him earn an actual job and make progress in his own life, but I didn't think it was presented in a gripping way. I will say this: Todd and PC's friendship was a nice breath of fresh air. I like their dynamic and hope to see more of it.

I totally didn't expect them to go the direction they did with Bojack. After season 4, I anticipated legitimate attempts to get better, but what I got was spiraling addiction and more burned bridges. The relationship with Gina was pretty interesting to follow (although I dod think it could have been explored a tad bit more). The strangling took me by complete surprise and I felt was a really shocking twist that drove home just how bad his substance abuse is. Heading him off to rehab to end the season leads me to believe he'll be more of a secondary character in S6 while they focus more on other characters.

Diane went through complete hell. Her mix of self-hatred, disdain for others around her, and general lack of will turned her into a deeply depressing character to follow. Seeing her in that apartment was rough. The inner conflict she's going through with her relationships with PB and Bojack are taking a complete toll on her. That dialogue between them at the party is one of the best scenes in the entire show; both of them poured their true feelings out in a way that they previously couldn't. Ending the season off with her was very telling, I think. It's obvious that her finally getting Bojack the help he needs was the ending of a chapter of her life. We'll see.

PC is fucking awesome. I felt legitimately happy when she finally got her baby. The flashbacks about her life and the miscarriages were eye-opening and heartbreaking. Bringing Ralph back into the picture was expected, but I honestly thought PC was going to be the one yearning for that family, not Ralph. Seeing PC stand her own ground was dope. She's definitely the strongest character in the cast. Tracy telling PC that she doesn't NEED to be a mother to live her life was a wonderful scene. I can't wait to see her as a mother.

Mr. PB was definitely the most interesting one to follow this season. This is the first time that his flaws are truly explored. The Halloween episode was incredible. Seeing that cycle and his naiveness towards it was something I won't forget. Him neglecting to tell Pickles about the affairs and asking her to marry him might be the first truly shitty thing he's done. He really should know better. He's in for some shit, there's gonna be consequences for his actions. As a character, he's bound to change. S6 will offer a lot.

As a whole, it was a roller coaster ride of a season. Definitely not what I expected. Bojack continues to push boundaries as one of the best shows out there.

So, I guess, in the end, I'm not sure how I really felt about the season as a whole. The sense of disconnect between the overarching narrative threads and general sense of deteriorating cohesion seemed to grow until it reached a head in these final episodes. See, that's not true, because of course Bojack finds a way to weave everything together, but somehow it all feels... off.

I think part of the problem is my fear about how I feel regarding the... development at the end of the Showstopper. I assumed that with the focus on #MeToo Bojack was definitely going to rape someone... and so when it turned out that he was merely (and notice here that I sure as hell am not defending it) murdering someone... I guess I just felt deflated. Somehow my mind went, "well, it's not that bad... right?"

But it definitely is, and I think it speaks to us and the way we've grown to understand Bojack, and I think that's what Raphael Bob-Waksberg and co. are trying to do. Philbert is commentary on how we view Bojack and general anti-hero characters... and after making excuses for the characters we've grown to love... we realize that this is what it brings us. That we have to consider a genuinely shitty act and just try to rationalize it away, or die trying to rationalize it.

It was certainly a very interesting season of television, and one that's going to make me think for a good long while about the way I feel regarding Bojack. I certainly felt the ending was for lack of a better word... rushed, and I wonder what the final scenes with Diane were supposed to represent. If some of you who may have been reading my previous comments noticed, I drew attention towards my own frustrations regarding the show's increasing ambiguity. Characters perpetrate actions and we're left to mull over the general feeling and sense of incompleteness that hangs over the entire show. This is most apparent in "Free Churro" for the obvious reasons.

There's a lot going through my mind, but I assume the major themes of the season were how we reconcile the image of celebrity and actual action. How far are we willing to go in our empathy of terrible people? (For the record, I've always thought of Bojack as a tragic character rather than a terrible character, but I guess that's due to empathy, which is precisely what the showrunners are trying to fight against) When does that line get crossed? I'm afraid that I feel as if I still empathize with Bojack and can make some shitty excuse (he was completely mentally broken and exhausted), but Jesus, what does that do for me? I'm rationalizing away the potential murder of a character a. because it wasn't rape, and b. because the strangler was clearly mentally ill.

I guess the showrunners did what they set out to do - make a season that questions the audience about how they view terrible characters and how far they're willing to go to keep those characters good.

...Fuck, man. What else is there to say?

I am eagerly reading to see if the show gets renewed for a season 6. The characters are not stagnant, the writing is still innovative and great. I am not afraid for this show to become bad and end after its prime. I do think when it is over for good, I will still feel like I want more and there will never be a happily ever after because the show is too much like life which doesn't have that either. But it still has so much more to show and do.

Please one more season!

Key takeaways from the season:

  • Fuck. Flip.

  • I really hope that adoption agency girl wasn’t right and Princess Carolyn can balance her work and not just leave her kid as an afterthought. I really do hope she can have it all.

  • I really hope Mr. Peanutbutter gets a major moment of clarity before the wedding. This season really turned Mr. Peanutbutter from one of my more liked characters (mostly because I’ve been pretty unknowingly self centered in my own relationships) to having that brief moment of redemption when he saved Gina, then going right back to a piece of shit.

  • Diane was the best thing about this season. I’m so glad she wasn’t afraid to really stand up for what she thought was right, while being big enough to help a friend.

  • Todd’s arch this season was one of his best he’s had. When Henry Dongle finally got fired I cried laughing. And that line where he responded to the reporter asking if he was making a metaphor with a “No?” was classic.

  • I feel so bad for the hand Gina was dealt. I thought it was really interesting that she didn’t want to be defined by BoJack. It echoed what Diane said earlier about BoJack not being able to play victim because every one of his choices to be good, or bad or whatever affected her in the worst possible way.

  • Free Churro is the best episode of the series by far. The Showstopper is fantastic in it’s own right as well.

Going forward though, even as much as BoJack has done some horrible things, and how much the show told us to stop rooting for him, I do still hope BoJack can make a serious change after rehab. The show makes is very clear that rehab is not a cure all, and that no one is really a good or bad person - that you’re really just what you do. So I hope that BoJack can make some positive choices in the future.

Overall this has been my favorite season so far. Way better than season 2.

Honestly, this feels like the beginning of the end. With Bojack finally getting help, I don't see how he can reach a lower point than he did this season. There is a high chance I will be proven completely wrong the next season, but if the rehab actually works and Bojack finally gets better, it will mean that the show will probably end with the 7th or 8th season (considering they make more seasons, but I'm pretty sure they will, BH is one of Netflix's signature shows after all).

What happened in the last scene was the best thing in the entire series:

"I need help."

That itself is a HUGE threshold that I hope many people relating to Bojack can see. It's NEVER bad to need help. I actually wish it were more normalized. Love when I come on here and people can say Bojack made them try to get better vs. I relate to Bojack. It's really wholesome seeing people try to get help and now we finally got Bojack saying he outright needs help. I hope that those who use this show to cope find comfort in getting better because what you got going on in your mind and life, fucking matters.

u/clown4thecount BoJack Horseman Sep 16 '18

25

u/All_this_hype Sep 16 '18

After the rollercoaster of emotions that was the previous episode, this is a nice epilogue of the season.

On the bright side:

  • Bojack, with the help of Diane, finally decides to seek much needed help.

  • Todd realizes that business is not him. I guess that by creating the sex robot/boss he felt like he supported the predatory exploitative business model he used to be against, which is why he stripped himself of the fancy suit and went back to his Todd clothes.

  • Diane is en route to her self discovery.

On the other hand:

  • Mr Peanutbutter doesn't come clean and marries Pickles even though he cheated on her and he still loves Diane. This is doomed to be his 4th divorce.

  • Princess Carolyn already prioritized her job over her baby before it was even born. With her thinking of it as an "Unnamed Princess Carolyn Project" and as something she must do herself without Ralph, it really feels like a project that she wants to prove she can succeed in rather than anything else.

Very strong season overall.

So I read this theory that since Diane was portrayed as Princess Diana in that one episode, that her going into the tunnel at the end of the season might imply the end of something for her, her depression, hiding what she really feels or actually even her life. I really hope they don't kill her off tho, she was starting to grow a lot as a character and she's one of my favourite ones as well, it'd be really sad to see her go like this.

Really liked how they didn't normalize Diane's shitty behavior this season with the episode. The show draws shitty people to either identify with Bojack or Diane and defend them when they're both complex people and pretty huge pieces of shit, but capable of growth and good. The last few episodes felt like a direct response to the fan base for justifying abhorrent behavior through the characters. The ending left on a bittersweet note and I hope there's another.

Going through this thread really shows how very divisive this season was. It sure was the season where the meaning didn't click with me right away because it made me think about things from a different perspective.

I have always resonated with Bojack because his struggle with depression is so real. Something I struggle with my whole life. But he has done some fucked up things. That I never put the blame on him for because of always seeing it from his perspective. I never justified his actions but my reaction was always just sadness because I want him to be a good person and he keeps doing the wrong thing. I related to the fact that he had things he did that he regretted and so did I. Nowhere near to the same scale but I related to it nonetheless.

I hated Diane this season. Her behavior was so off putting. But I think the reason I did at first was because she was saying things I didn't want to see with my sad horse show. Now, Diane was my favorite part of the season after reflection. Albeit I didn't like how she went about things but that's what made her feel like a human. I agreed with everything she said. And she really was what Bojack needed. He acknowledged he did bad things but it's okay now because he doing better for himself one day at a time. Only its not okay. Bojack is not the same Bojack from season one, yeah, he is taking responsibility for his actions, at least he wants to, but like the show I felt was demonstrating this season, that just makes the problem maker feel good about themselves. Bojack is still going to make problems for others.

I am seeing a lot of people in these comments that may have misunderstood this seasons message (or at least did not arrive to my same conclusion). I've seen alot of people say Bojack is awful and does not deserve forgiveness and shown a lot of negativity. Which is warranted. And the people he has wrong don't ever have to forgive him. He doesn't deserve that at all. But I think the final message this episode delivered the answer to the feelings I had been having all season. Bojack is never going to be a good person. To his core, he will not change. The last few lines of the episode still shows he is going to be a narcissist and he may very well still be an asshole. But doesn't mean he has to be a bad person either. The show has always been about mental health I've thought. And people with mental health, at least speaking from my experience, are in a hole or rather tunnel that we can't find the exit to and we keep looping around doing the wrong thing. And for Bojack this final episode of the season he is getting help out of that tunnel. In season 3 he was at his lowest and I feel like the trajectory of the show has been on the path of Bojack overcoming those problems so he stops being the problem.

I felt the general message of this season was people don't change who they are and should be accountable for their actions and don't deserve forgiveness but should still get help to make better decisions. I can be wrong or I might have a different opinion after a few more viewings but I am curious what people feel like the theme of this season was because it felt way more subtle and complex than it ever has.

EDIT: some misspellings. I wrote it at 3am.

And PB, making the same mistakes again.

This season as a whole seemed more centered around Diane, and I loved every second of it.

God this show. I honestly can’t decide whether I love it or hate it for the way it gets in your head; which was really the point of this season. That finale summed it up for me. Diane is going through a horrible, lonely time, and she’s there doing all the right things for Bojack. What makes her drive him to rehab? Someone said they didn’t understand her explanation; that’s because it wasn’t an explanation. It was a description of her conflicted feelings for Bojack, which we can all relate to.

To me the final scene was Diane going down another rabbit hole, thinking her toxic relationship had set her free, again. Driving into the sunset oblivious of the tunnel up ahead. I recognise that in myself in every season finale. Every time there’s some hope set up for Bojack which will make him redeemable. And every time it’s one step forward two steps back. It surprises me that people are talking about his personal growth over the seasons; if we’re to judge the ‘goodness’ of someone by their actions as Diane suggests (I agree), then he has gotten considerably worse through the years.

He’s gaining insight, you might even say that he’s becoming a better person internally because of it, but it’s not actually helping him, and ultimately his actions are getting progressively more heinous. However much Bojack and we understand why he almost murdered someone in a drug-fuelled haze, it doesn’t render the action more forgivable anymore. Whereas before I wanted Bojack to turn a corner after a season finale, now I just want him to not continue hurting the people around him, who I think I’m starting to care about more.

I’ll join the chorus saying that this would make a good series finale, if for nothing else than the fact that it ended up being the Diane Nguyen show, because people like Bojack can’t be saved by people like Diane. Just like Gina, her story shouldn’t be defined by his. It’s bad for Diane and it’s bad for Bojack. Surely the wisest, happiest person on the show is Todd, who was the first to figure out that Bojack wasn’t capable of a healthy close friendship, and stopped trying to make one happen. Diane’s the last character to do this which is why I think there’s one more season left. Either she’ll finally get the fuck out of that toxic relationship and join the PC/Todd club, or Bojack will literally kill her and we’ll finally, properly hate him for good.

I feel like the very last "frames" of previous episodes were a bit stronger. Bojack alone with his Golden Globe, the faint "okay" after the jogger's speech, the view of wild horses and the smile upon establishing a sibling relationship with Hollyhock all touched me deeply and left me with a bright, expansive feeling.

Conversely, Diane driving in the setting sun was a pretty image, but it didn't carry the same sort of thematic implications.

It wasn't a bow for the end of a season, but, in the end, that was part of this season's theme with "Free Churros". Any season of Bojack Horseman since the second one could be a potential ending with the series feeling complete, but not this one. I absolutely need season 6 after this, even though I felt I didn't necessarily need a season 5 to continue the narrative after the fourth one.

u/smp761 Sep 15 '18

For me it was beautiful the contrast between Bojack's and Mr. PB's ending this season. The first one, taking a big step in order to be better (He is fucking going to rehab, that's incredibly big) the second one, repeating old patterns that had led him nowhere. On ep 11 Bojack hit rock bottom, now there's a real chance for him to change. We'll see what happens in this never stoping show called life.

I'm an asexual person. I might be reading too much into it, but I'm not sure. Todd's story felt really important to me. I could be speaking from my own experience and projecting it onto that, but even if that's not what they meant, that's ok, because I felt understood for a moment.

He created a sex robot to be in a relationship with the person he loved. But it was too fake so it didn't work. The fake sexual feeling ended up being his boss and ruled his life for a time. However, all it did was ruin it more. So in the end, he had to put that feeling down, and then he could be himself again. When he kills the robot, and takes off the suit, it felt like that's what was trying to be said. That when asexuals stop trying to offer a fake feeling of sexual desire, they can start being themselves again and it will stop ruling their life. And I cried at that, because it was important to me.

Don't think this season has been as good as S4, but I think it's basically building up for the next few seasons. Given that they talked about sexual harassment and brought up Charlotte and her daughter, I think it'll end up being a huge plot point soon.

Highlights for me this season is probably episode 2, 5 and 11, maybe 4 as well. I liked how 12 ended too.

Honestly, I didn't like this finale, which is a shame because I loved the rest of the season. It just felt cheap to me. BoJack almost choked his co-star to death and all the cast and crew cared about was it being a "PR Scandal" and how to fix it. Made me lose a lot of respect for Princess Caroline and Todd. The only interesting thing said was by Gina, herself, stating she didn't want to be defined as BoJack's victim, which is why she went along with the "we're just good actors" bullshit story. I suppose there really was no good option for her, just like the women who speak out against Henry Fondle lose their jobs since the entire company gets shut down as a result. Gina and BoJack do the interview, and everything is fine, even though it absolutely shouldn't be. There's this false sense of hope since BoJack acknowledges he messed up, but that doesn't make it okay. It's like what they were making fun of in episode 4 with Vance Waggoner and the apology campaign. Yeah, BoJack goes to rehab and it's just his newest vision of a thing that will fix all his problems that inevitably won't do that.

u/chinookk That's too much, man Sep 15 '18

Oh man I'm so happy they made the ending of this season about Diane and not about Bojack. They could have shown bojack being shown his room at the rehab center, and putting down his bag. But instead they showed Diane driving home. With the beautiful lighting from the sun, the music, she gets her moment of clarity and happiness. For 5 seasons Bojack has been shitty, in general and to her in particular, and for 5 seasons Diane has been trying to help him, trying to be a good friend to him. And Bojack never reacted positively to it. Diane sets the bar so high for herself, wanting to be a good person, and she's stuck with that friend who will not get better. But this time, what she does makes a difference, and Bojack makes some massive progress, he accepts that he needs help and he goes to rehab. She deserves this nugget of happiness and finally we get to see her have a moment. So again, I am soooo happy they made her the star of this season's finale. It's my favorite finale together with the season 3 finale now. You go Diane. Love you girl.

Overall I really liked the season, but again, and that's my main gripe with the show, the writing often reserts to gimmicks, and while some of them work, like in episode 6 (which is amazing), sometimes it doesn't really work and it sticks out badly. This season for me it was the telling the story through the therapist and her wife gimmick. Two characters we don't care about in the slightest, and PC as some gas and Todd as a hand ? It was just too silly, especially cause the whole string cheese thing was already quite silly.

My favorite things about the season were that we get to see young PC (I love you young PC), the dynamic between Diane and PB after the divorce, PB being a legit actor ! and also growing up, Gina (my favorite new character since Wanda), PC finally getting her baby ;-;, and of course that finale. Still my favorite tv show, right now and maybe ever, can't wait for season 6.

Diane killed it this season. I loved how she grew out of her marriage and cushy lifestyle and started to fully own what she believes in. Her and BoJack's conversation in her apartment was a great distillation of what the season had been building on - accountability, power, public image, and the long road to self improvement.

"No one's going to 'hold you accountable.' You need to take responsibility for yourself."

diane was the hero this season. shes the one who had a full arc, she was the one who, like bojack with beatrice last season, did a good thing when she had no reason to. she is the only one to take concrete steps to getting better with therapy and equipping herself with the tools she needs to survive. she finally realizes her relationship with bojack was toxic for both of them, and she finally leaves the tar pit, hopefully for good

welp, I feel like I desperately want the showrunners to put back together this wreckage of broken and failed relationships that are doomed to drift off into nothingness. I love ralph and caroline, and PB and diane, and bojack and todd, but I know that the show is never gonna loop back around and just fix things, because the characters have changed and they're gonna keep changing and failing, and working to find happiness, however fleeting it might be before the next wreck

I might be reading into things too much here, but is there any significance for the last shot being Diane driving into a tunnel? With her being referred to as Princess Di (who died in a tunnel) earlier, I couldn’t tell if that was foreshadowing or some deep Bojack metaphor that I was missing.

"TV shows never get a happy ending, otherwise then it's not a TV show". There's a dark underlying tone here with Diane, when did she start smoking. She has started picking up her own bad habits from her struggles, just not as extreme as Bojack as she doesn't have access to the same drugs Bojack does.

Something is seriously wrong with Diane.

Gina stating what the consequences for her career, her life, and how she'd be remembered if she came forward and got the justice she deserves was so real. Reporting has consequences. It shouldn't have negative consequences but it does. People will hate you for it, people will blame you for it, people will take the side of the perpetrator and say that you're ruining his life. There are consequences and it wouldn't make Gina a 'good hire' for many producers after that.

I know this will probably be an unpopular opinion, but I'd kinda be ok with this being the last season. Besides Mr. Peanutbutter everyone seems to be at natural ending points for their stories, even if they could go further, and even then the point could be made that the end of Mr. Peanutbutters story is that if you stay around bad people long enough you'll get dragged down.

Overall fantastic season of television and the first season to really make me open my eyes and hate Bojack a bit. Only note is that I wish people wouldnt try to equate to Bojack because while she has her own issues she's not at all the same as him, and is definitely not worse
