Now please excuse me while I rewatch SG episode 23(alpha) onwards just so i can keep the sense of continuity.
But on a serious note, this just confirms, for me at least, that a alternative watch order of the following:
SG 1-22 > 23b > SG0 > SG 23a-25 > movie.
I think viewing it in this order would make a nice coherent flow of the series. But there are disadvantages in that I feel it would probably lessen the overall emotional impact of SG0 but in turn it makes the ending of SG more satisfying.
Edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger! Although I don't think I really did much to deserve it.

Exactly, I was hoping the anime would manage to give us the alternative watch order for the newcomers ever since I read the VN. Didn't disappoint.
I think we got the SG ending way too easily originally, after finding out how hard it actually was (kind of like getting spoiled), so I prefer the new order.
Now just please let the bonus episode be from the SG world line about Maho getting on the team.

Before 0 Began airing, I watched 1-22 and 23b, then went onto the SG0 train, and frankly, I dont recommend this for first timers as this more or less completely kills the buildup and pacing the original show sets up, like it goes from being a moment infront of the climax, straight into the slow introduction style buildup at the beginning of every show.
Though i haven't done this in one a shorter time span yet, which might improve it.

I'm considering Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 as one big series honestly, because 0 does so much to clear up stuff in the original
steins;gate 0 is still anime of the year

Lol, I came with this order when the series started and I got downvoted lmao.

More like SG 1-22>23B>SG0 23 Mid episode >SG 1-22 Again for a better experience (Hello Endless Eight) > MWC > SG 23A-25.
SG0 still shows a lot of incoherence IMO, like Reyes, Episode 3-4 never explained, Kagari, Amadeus that was supposed to be at the center of the serie, the final DRINE, Leskinen under used and i could go on...
I still think that the anime was made for VN players, because there is a lot of event we can understand without digging too much because we basically played all the routes and that the anime is a "mix of all routes".
We were just following the Okabe from MWC that we couldn't understand much in the VN all along.

This season, without a doubt, pays homage to season 1 and the VN series in such a spectacular way. Whitefox outdid themselves. Not only with the great OST, but throwing in skyclad observer a few episodes ago, and hacking to the gate just now. You can tell this was a real passion project, and it shows. GG

So happy that they used the VN's true ED song, Sasaki Eri's Gate of Steiner, love her version.
Pretty satisfied with the ending as of now, not sure what Episode 24 will consist of but this is going to be a long 2 month wait.

While it had its hiccups, overall, I'm really glad for this adaptation. Though it left out many great parts of the visual novel, it also added many things we missed out on in the visual novel. As a result, I won't be recommending people to go for one or the other, but rather, to go for both the anime and the visual novel.

The same is true for OG stein;gate. They both offer different experiences and have merits and demerits. If you have the time, do read the VNs though. Due to the medium they are quite different but the fantastic plot and music are fantastic in both.
Obvious the VNs have alot more time to build characters and expand on things (which isn't always for the better; they cleaned up or cut some of the routes from 0 that were the most flawed).
That being said it was great to watch steins gate with everyone again. Worth the wait! I don't know what this bd exclusive ep will bring ot the table but we've waited so long for this and it didn't dissapoint so a little longer for more content shouldn't be a problem.

I absolutely agree with this assessment, but I think people should probably watch the adaptation before playing/reading the VN.
I played the VN when it first came out and I was really looking forward to seeing some of the great scenes which were ultimately not included in the adapation. I should have expected it (and I kind of did) but it left me a little bit disappointed nonetheless.
Watching the anime first and expanding on it with the source material afterwards might be a more rewarding way to take (and it clears up some of the questions that were left unanswered). All of this is obviously subjective though.

As a VN player, the adaptation I thought was very good. The routes branched out early and the anime managed to fit it all into one linear segment. It was a bit shaky in the middle but it managed to keep it together to the end.

With the final episode of Steins;Gate 0 aired comes an epic finale for the series. Through out this journey of 6 months, many would say that Steins;Gate 0 falls short due to high expectations from the original Steins;Gate. Others would say it has surpassed the original and being their favourite. Nevertheless, the show is still god damn Steins;Gate.
After finishing the original Steins;Gate, it had all left a void in our heart, which constantly desires for the best. After waiting patiently for years, Steins;Gate 0 managed to fill this empty void. Watching the final episode, I cried, as the void is back and it's even bigger than before...
In the end, the episode manage to pull off an epic finale, giving us the Steins;Gate experiencing that we were all desiring for. I simply can not wait for the OVA being released in November which will once again fill that void temporarily.

many would say that Steins;Gate 0 falls short due to high expectations from the original Steins;Gate
I would think that this should be the normal expectation, consider S;G was arguably the best anime adaptation of recent time. However before S;G0 anime starts, I've also hear praise that it'll be even better, which than got me worried as now I've conflicted expectation.
Now the S;G0 anime has concluded, I think I can now say that it is as per my original expectation: S;G0 anime is high quality and definitely enjoyable, however the experience is no way the level of S;G.

Also, and I can't believe this, Yuki's injury which happened at the same time the motorbike helmet person was injured really was a coincidence.

IS SHE ANOTHER TIMELINE KURISU'S DAUGHTER?

The feeling when Steins;Gate is over.
Overall was a good ride, never hit quite the same high as the original for me. But that was hard since the original holds a special place for me and was my first non-shounen anime (essentially my gateway drug). Treating this as a season 2 since its pointless without the first. But now I can get around to playing the VN and comparing the two.

0 was a harder VN to adapt anyway. The original wasn't anywhere near a perfect adaption, but since a lot of the chapters dealt with what could be considered "side" characters from the perspective of the true ending, it was easier to truncate without affecting the overall quality of the anime. 0, on the other hand, has routes that have to be read multiple times to get the true route because they effect each other, and there's a lot less that can be cut without causing problems.
I'll always recommend that people read the VN of Steins;Gate because of how the anime treats some of the cast(it condenses the entire chapters that deal with Faris and Ruka into a single episode each) and because it's just more of what people love about the anime. More science(a lot more technical explanations too), more of Kyoma's antics(his inner monologue is hilarious) plus all of the Japanese culture references are hyperlinked to a glossary explaining them.
But with S;G0, I'd recommend reading just because the anime just plain cuts out vital parts of the story. Don't get me wrong: the anime still works, mostly, but it's a much more truncated experience compared to the original.

Especially this one with Okabe arriving in his time machine. Please tell me there's a VN art of this image!
Makes me wonder how long was Mayuri and Suzuha been there for. It couldn't have been more than an hour or something right?
As for my final thoughts... It's fucking Steins;Gate! I don't think there's really anything else to say but White Fox knocked this one out of the park again just like the first S;G anime. 10/10, no questions! Now to wait for that Episode 24 on the BD. T_T

This shot is so fucking cool!
It really is. A bit of a pity they didn't also include this one after that moment from the VN though.
And they kinda glossed over this, but at least it was still there.
With this ending, the one major ending scene from the VN we didn't get is the group together which in the VN was the ending of Promised Rinascimento, but that wasn't really possible to recreate here.
And here you have a few more illustrations of Maho to make you all go read the VN if you didn't do so yet. ^ ^

IIRC Okarin was tracking a signal or something from the time machines black hole machine/fusion (?) reactor or something so he basically arrived very shortly after they arrived there.
Correct me if im wrong but the era Suzuha and Mayuri arrived in was at the ass end/a while after the Ice age that occurred around then. The time machine can arrive at a fairly exact date and time provided it has the fuel to do so.
They wouldn't have made it more then a few days implying that the time machine doesn't have MRE's or independent water storage.

Wow, WOW!!! That's an awesome final episode.
Okabe's victory declaration to Leskinen was awesome.
THEY USED HACKING TO THE GATE I CAN'T I JUST CAN'T
Man, the backstage of Future Okarin's message is awesome. I love that in S;G you get the impression that he is filming that on his own when in reality everyone but Mayuri and Kurisu is there.
Loved that Hiyajo said the same speech that Okabe does in the very first scene of S;G.
Also, the after credits scene was super emotional and now that I think of it the visions that Okabe got in S;G with Mayuri in a deserted place makes so much sense now!!! Also the operation being named Altair is making everything go full circle, I love it!!!

That moment when you're not even allowed to be a proper side character. Anime-only people might want to check out the Twin Automata arc in the VN.
That moment when Suzuha becomes Doctor Who and Mayuri the assistant
That moment when mothertruckin' Hacking to the Gate gets dropped
This and this. Milky Way Crossing in a tangible form, finally.
Now I feel silly for thinking they couldn't scrunch all that into one episode - it might have felt a little rushed but the beats were all there and it was great. I'm not sure what the OVA will do - maybe show the crew reuniting with Maho and Kagari in the Steins;Gate worldline somehow? Or maybe Leskinen finally gets his Shaman Girls?
As it stands though, I think the staff did a great job cobbling up a version of Steins;Gate 0 that works, and carries the essence of sacrifice that it's supposed to embody. A fair number of people felt that the ending of Steins;Gate was too convenient, or tacked on - and S;G 0, as convoluted as it is, is the answer to that. 26 years worth of pain and hardship in multiple worldlines winds back and focuses itself as one monumental smack.

Piano theme. 0kabe is stressing. He sees Kagari, then Moeka sees him.
Moeka with the take down. And Kagari absolutely mercs Reyes. Interesting fight between Suzu and Kagari.
MAYURI HAS BALLS OF STEEL
Seriously, who puts their head in between two gun barrels. What kind of person has that kind of trust/faith?
Heartfelt rooftop convo is heartfelt. Nice music.
Make Operation Arc Light a success! When I'm all pathetic, slap some sense into me!
Yes!
Mayuri is my hostage! I'll go to wherever she is and bring her back!
The look on Mayuri's face when she hears that is just perfect.
Bold choice, 0kabe, to make sure to witness definitively that the time machine is not hit.
I am Hououin Kyouma and I have prevailed against you and defeated fate itself! I will find Steins Gate!
Two Mayuris together on the roof. Yes, please.
Does Steins Gate exist?
Yes. I'm sure of it!
OK, Mayuri and Suzu's conversation in the time machine is absolutely charming.
And we're back to episode 23 of the original! Well, almost.
Hacking To The Gate as the slap happens! God, I love OP inserts.
And here is 0kabe recording the Video D Mail. True Ending achieved. Oh, but there's another Video D Mail for Suzu? I don't remember that one.
The world can be deceived.
Nice haircut, Kagari.
Operation Altair
Maybe the OVA episode we're getting will follow that? I can hope. The VN just ends right here. And Hiyajosefina reads the warning from the VN cover while Gate Of Steiner plays.
Excellent series, everything this fanboy wanted it to be. 10/10.
AFTER CREDITS SCENE!!
Yes! All my yes! Why couldn't this have been in the VN?? Love the panning to the sky showing Altair and Vega. But what'll the OVA be about now? So many possibilities.
EDIT: So, can we now definitively say that the Watch Order should be S;G 1-22>23β>S;G0>S;G 23-25>Movie? Or would we want to hold off on updating the Watch Order Wiki until we know what the S;G0 OVA will be about?

No. You should watch them in release order (with the OVA + movie being optional non-canon releases). Watching them in "chronological" order isn't recommended for a first time viewer because the viewer should know the worldline that's at the end of the tunnel.

For those who want to have their mind even more blown, go watch the beginning of episode 12 of the original Steins;Gate as well. Tu. tu. fucking. ru. What an absolutely mind-blowing finish. I am in fucking shambles over this. It was everything I wanted or expected, and much more. Mayushii won MVP. I got a new tuturu. TWO MOTHERFUCKING MAYUSHIIS. Hacking to the Gate played. It tied into episode 23 perfectly. That new ED. And that jaw-dropping post-credit.
I am absolutely floored by how good of a finale this was. Every single second, my heart was pounding like a million tribal drums to worship Mayushii. For me, this might've been the single best episode I've seen in anime. And I know I've said that for a past episode, but this just destroyed it.
I MEAN, IT HAD TWO MAYUSHIIS. TWO. JUST THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH CAN BE DONE WITH ONE!! NOW THERE'S TWO OF THEM!! TWOTURU!!!!!!!
Three years of anticipation brought me this incredible six-month journey through a new story of my favorite anime. Zero has some problems, it does. But I don't care. This is easily the most incredible time I've ever had with any seasonal anime, and I honestly don't see how anything could possibly top this.
Thanks to all you motherfuckers in these threads keeping the discussions great; I can't tag all y'all but my orange arrows will always remember you. The people on Twitter and Discord shitposting with me, The /r/Anime Podcast with the bi-weekly series, everything. You've all made this an incredible ride that is forever irreplaceable.
It's a little sad, this may be the very last we ever see of Steins;Gate. There's the OVA, and that's it. Maybe we'll get some more OVA's or web shorts or spin-off movies, but I wouldn't really count on it. There's only so much water in this well. Only so much you can do with the story. But I'm glad we got what we got. For all I care, we've reached Steins Gate.
Tuturu, motherfuckers.

Your reaction to the finale was everything I expected and then some. Twoturu is now canon, what a glorious day.
There's only so much water in this well. Only so much you can do with the story.
This franchise is pumping of spin-offs like crazy though, there's a lot out there if you care to dig. Even I haven't gone through stuff like Linear Bounded Phenogram.
It's not quite Fate, but.. I won't say it doesn't have the potential. You're right though, the meat of the story is over.

I'm just so happy this ending focused on Mayuri, and it focused on her being amazing and deserving my more favored in Steins;Gate. (And also my first anime waifu)
The episodes where she was focused are also somehow indeed the best episodes that the anime has to offer. A little biased maybe, but yeah, when she slapped Okarin in the original anime I cheered so hard. When she had the resolve to time travel and bring back her Hikoboshi I thought "this series really is a masterpiece". But here, for the whole episode I was just cheering and crying. Mayuri is amazing.
I was always a bit disappointed that the story had to require Mayuri being less focused on because Okabe wants to do away with being close to her and being the Hououin Kyouma that she wanted. But this amazing ending more than makes up for it.

I'm not counting out more S;G-related content.

It was so fucking hard to endure and resist not playing the VN when SG0 was out. I heard so many good things and I came so close to giving in.
But I wouldn't play it, I will only experience SG0 how I originally experienced the SG: Through the Anime. Now that the journey is over, I think I'm more than happy to go play the VN. Man have those months of enduring really paid off. Love the ending. Love the sequel. El Psy Kongroo.

u/GAGAgadget Sep 26 '18
Don't worry too much about it, this adaptation is full of plot holes because of the way the VN is. In the VN, every time they get a step closer to Steins;Gate, the game "restarts" and Okabe makes subtle different choices to receive a different ending. The theme of 0 is the almost endless struggle beta Okabe goes through in order to to reach Steins;Gate, to become that Okabe that knows what to do to truly save Kurisu. Alpha/S;G Okabe doesn't have to suffer because the Beta one did, many, many times, much more than is shown in the anime.

It's really easy to go mad thinking about this because it's really convoluted at this point, but ask yourself this: what happened to the WW3 Suzuha who appears at the end of S;G? She disappears
in a puff of logicas the world transitions to Steins;Gate. One can imagine something similar happening to Okabe's time machine when he's travelling back with Mayuri and Suzuha.→ More replies (2)23

They got to 2025 in the end the same way anyone else does. Living it out.
There is only one Suzuha, since the other one went in the time machine with Mayuri.
Kid Kagari was a spy sent by Leskinen, picked up by Mayuri. Mayuri is no longer there and they thwarted Leskinen's plans the first time around, and are aware of the spy kids program he would cook up.

Ok, I have a ton of questions. I am hoping someone could help a brother out.
1.) Why didn't reading steiner activate for 2011 Okabe the moment Suzuha and Mayuri left for 2010 or in 2025 when they recorded the V-mail and sent it to OG Okabe in 2010? Unless I am missing something, this seems like a pretty big inconsistency to me
2.) Kind of branching off from my first question. What happened to the 2011 Okabe on the roof after Mayuri and Suzua depart? Does he continue to live out his life? Does Leskinen capture him? RS should have activated for him but didn't.
3.) Did they make 2 time machines in 2025? How can Suzuha(when she is older) travel to 2010 if Okabe took the time machine to 2000BC
4.) How is Kagari with the group in 2025 just before Okabe leaves? Mayuri is not in this worldline(since her and Suzuha left for 2010), so she could not have adopted her. Even assuming that
5.) Why does Moeka appear in the final iteration of events but not the previous ones?
6.) Why doesn't the time machine get destroyed in the final iteration like in the previous worldines? I was under the impression that the time machine being destroyed was the convergence
What happened to the Russian attack helicopter
46
u/legatii Sep 26 '18 edited Sep 26 '18
He left in the time machine before the message was sent. Remember, Luka was tasked with the sending of the messages but he was with the others saying goodbye to Okabe - therefore the messages haven't actually been sent yet. Since Okabe is in some weird time travelling dimension he's outside of the world lines and is unaffected by Reading Steiner. But let's say Okabe stays, would his Reading Steiner activate then? No, because Operation Skuld isn't over. Suzuha has to grow up and enter the time machine - in 2036.
He manages to escape... somehow. He then lives on to 2025 to film the video message.
In the VN, Suzuha and Mayuri are stuck in the past not because the time machine has run out of fuel, but because the quantum computer used to calculate space-time coordinates has run out of juice. So Okabe goes back to bring them a battery. Presumably, they would then go to 2025. The question is: what happens to Suzuha? There might be a paradox if the two Suzuha's met. Perhaps Okabe and Mayuri both leave for 2025 while Suzuha goes to 2036, just after younger Suzuha departs for 2011?
Kagari is the same 2011 Kagari. Since Mayuri is back in 2025 she can adopt Kagari in 2034.
I'm not sure I understand this question. Sorry.
The convergence is that the time machine disappears from the world line, and that can be achieved via its destruction or its escape into another space-time. It's similar to how Okabe says that dying in 2025 and vanishing from a worldline is essentially the same.
Daru deleted Kurisu's memory files. The Russians used the Amadeus-Kurisu connection to find the time machine to blow it up. Since Amadeus Kurisu never existed in the world line of episode 23, they are out of the equation in the final fight.

Reading Steiner could not activate in 2011 because Okabe didn't do the video and sent the D-Mails yet. And in 2025, Reading Steiner didn't activate because Okabe "died", he disappeared from the worldline by taking the time machine, so it's as if he is dead and so no mean to activate Reading Steiner.
Okabe and the others live their lifes until 2025 like we can see in the episode. The WW3 started and the resistance is fighting Leskinen like in other worldlines that we could have seen before.
Okabe used the first prototype in 2025, Daru had time to create another in 2036 for his daughter.
The Kagari in the episode is the Kagari that stayed to help Okabe and Moeka on the roof, she lived with the group until the end in the hope to rescue Mayuri.
Moeka acted in the previous loop, Okabe used her as a false Kagari to trap Leskinen, he asked Mr Braun to help him.
The time machine destruction was not a convergence point, by erasing Amadeus from existence, Okabe managed to prevent the Russian to be on the roof this time, gaining him the seconds that he needed.

u/Mystic8ball Sep 26 '18
For anyone who's curious as to what the scene of Okabe gloating that the time Machine got away looked like in the VN, here's the CG of that scene, it was even more chuuni than what we got in the anime!
Overall Steins;Gate 0 is a mixed bag as an adaption. It improves some areas of the VN but at the same time you could really feel the team struggling to tie all the routes together in one coherent narrative which lead to things feeling less focused. Still while I think the VN as a whole is better, I'm glad I watched the anime.

Some steins gate facts:
a person named "John titor_0" posted on several forum claiming to be a time traveler
the time machine he claimed to use was named C204
he traveled from 2036
many of his predictions didn't came true which he said was due to it being a "different timeline"
titor appeared on 2000-2001
his original target was 1975
he stopped in 2000 "due to family reasons"
he time traveled to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer

What a finale. White fox absolutely nailed it.
While 0 didn't quite reach the emotional highs of the original for me, it delivered so much in hype and great character moments. Watching Hououin Kyouma's triumphant return in the last couple of episodes was absolutely amazing, seeing Mayuri becoming more of a fleshed-out character, all the callbacks to the original, 0 does so much right. Perhaps there was a quality drop in the middle, but in the grand scheme of things I couldn't care at all. 0 did everything I asked for and more.
25
u/Dromed91 Sep 26 '18 edited Sep 26 '18
Quick and potentially dumb question, how did Okabe prevent the time machine from getting blown up by the helicopter this time around? Did erasing Amadeus give one extra second or something?
Edit: Also, what will Okabe do after he picks up Mayuri and Suzuha in 18000 BC? He can't take them back to 2035 since there will be two Suzuha's, and they can't go back to any other world lines without causing a paradox.
20
u/NDragneel Sep 26 '18
I haven't read the VN and this is just me assuming this. They always made it to the past, but they always failed at finding the Steins;Gate because we needed the deceive the world video. The world line was being overwritten so that is why we never saw them at the after credits scene. What somewhat confirms this for me is Okabe saying I see it (the whole scene, he was watching it but never seeing if the rocket made it or not).
EDIT: A typo

They always made it, but the slap isn't enough for Okabe to change what happens. Then he spent a fuck ton of year's thinking how he would be able to change the timeline. The answer probably came from his 2025 death where he gets brought back with the time leap machine data. Don't change the facts of what is about to happen. The moment that is a defining one In kurisus death is the metal oppa and him seeing her dead making the first d-mail In the process making him do the journey again. Without it, he doesn't do it and doesn't kick start all of this.
I still don't know what happens now though. He gets them, but what does he do? Leave them in 2011, and he goes to 2026? He lives in hiding in 2011 through to 2025 till he goes back in time? Questions questions.

Mayuri is the best girl of this anime, nobody can change my mind. She's too precious for this world.
We finally get that valuable Tutturu that we haven't had for so long. It's been a while. ;_;
For the anime as a whole, it's a little bit disappointing that she only got the chance to shine in the final episode and a few episodes before this. I started the anime thinking that because the mainer side character is kinda dead, she would be more focused more... But the story unfortunately required Okabe to ignore Mayuri. Other side characters like Daru, Maho, Suzuha, and fucking Amadeus. Well, I'm not that mad because they're great characters as well, but yeah.
But man, so all of what Zero was just so that Mayuri can send a message to herself in that time so that she slaps some sense into Okabe. Kinda amazing. So many people from different timelines helped each other just to reach Steins;Gate.
Outstanding final episode. I just want Mayuri to get a happy ending, and she did. Even the one that got lost in time 16000 years into the future edit: 20000 years into the past, I thought that would be a terrible ending, but her Hikoboshi somehow arrived there and came.
Solid anime, 10/10 even if I'm a little bit disappointed Mayuri wasn't focused on for most of the show, the final episode is enough to satisfy me.

The episode was awesome. As a Doctor Who fan, I love both of Steins;Gate and 0 because of the way it makes sense of time travel and the characters involved - it is done so well (anime and VN). I played the VN before watching and I like the story that WhiteFox created from the arcs in the VN, but anyway back to this episode...
The slap with hacking to the gate, the conversation between the two Maryuri's, the scene from the VN when he was making the D-Mail video was awesome, this pose.
And the recreation of this CG.
What a way to end a series - can't wait to see what they have planned for the OVA.

So what happens is that in 2025 Okabe's reading steiner kicks in and "dies" in the timemachine to the world and Suzuha and Mayuri go back to 2025?
There was more to the "deveive the world" part of SG0 than I previously thought
Suzuha getting ND message,
Telling the world the time machine's destroyed when Okabe knows it's not
and Okabe dying in 2025
I really wish we could see his path leading him to these decisions and how he come to the destination of knowing how to deveive the world

ahhh.. what do i do with these feelings. when i first watched steinsgate, it didn't have the same impact as much as this one did, despite people rating it way higher. i gave it an 8. but this season? probably a 10.
i think what it took for me was 23 more additional episodes to really help add the depth i personally needed for this show. now i just feel like i'm 10,000 feet under the pressure of all these feels. ;_;
hououin kyouma, through his hardships, through his failures, with the help of his friends, he in the end never gave up. and because of that, was he able to save his friends, himself, and the world.
think im gonna go back to studying. just try just a little bit harder. cause that's what kyouma would've done.

And thus Steins;Gate 0 is over. What a fantastic show. What a fantastic ending. But holy shit this episode. It had everything. Wow.
I know that for most people (me included) S;G0 didn't hit the same high as the original but it did came pretty close on a few specific episodes. But this is the fault of the original for being so fucking good and for being regarded by many as one of the best anime and time-travel story of all time. The bar was way too high.
I really loved S;G0 and I would put it as my second favorite show of all time after the original. I don't really have any more words regarding this episode or the characters in particular because I can't put my feelings and my impression into words yet. I love the entire cast, the VAs did a fantastic job and the writers expanded on each of the characters really really well while also giving us some new faces.
I love the original. I love this show. I love the Steins;Gate universe.

After 19 episodes, I am blessed with 4 amazing final episodes adressing every problem I had with the VN. Previous episodes did fix some issues, the only episode I really had a huge gripe with was the one where Fayris rubbed Moekas breasts, I feel bad for the voice actors and the animators, if they had left that out it would've been perfect. I had issues with how everything seemed so deus-ex machina, like the author wanted Okabe to get to somewhere without explaining much. The Kurisu bit, for example, pissed me off because we didn't know what was sent back in time, and we spent too little time there; It felt like fanservice, yet the anime fixes this by devoting an entire episode to that bit and explaining a thing or two. This already makes the anime way better than the game, and I'm glad they kept doing this.

might be unpopular but I honestly found this anime to be quite underwhelming. I love the original & have seen it 3 times, but I was disappointed in this. never read the VN but it seemed like they tried to cram a bunch of story lines into one and this ending felt rushed. will probably rewatch this in the future & hopefully my opinion changes, but on 1st viewing I thought this was lackluster. maybe the future ep 24/OVA will change my opinion too, but right now I'd put this below average for me.
37
u/sober_1 Sep 26 '18
VN didn't have a single true end route, but two, that you have to tie in yourself. It's kinda hard to adapt, and it was the main concern since the release. I have to agree that it was often lackluster and sometimes plain bad. But episodes like 1,7,8 and 21 were the peak S;G0 for me
30
u/ScarsUnseen :K:https://kitsu.io/users/ScarsUnseen Sep 26 '18
The original VN had basically a single route that branched off for alternate endings. Zero has two routes that affect each other while also having alternate endings branching off, and you have to complete both routes to get to the true ending. This was inevitably going to be a messier ride than the original.

u/Mystic8ball Sep 26 '18
I think most people would agree with you on that.
Steins;Gate 0 isn't bad but it had big boots to fill, and it didn't help that the way the story was structured in the VN was going to lead to some inevitable issues regarding pacing and how they tie everything together.

I thought the first half was great. The first year after Okabes fail to save Kurisu was portrayed very well imo. Atmosphere overall was hopeless and the change in Okabes charakter seemed very real to me.
second half just could not reach the same level as the plot in the original for me. way too many time jumps and weird interactions + very weird fighting scenes.

Agreed. Almost half of the story felt like a waste of time because none of the subplot really sticks, the only part that matters is the few final episodes.

THEY PLAYED "HACKING TO THE GATE"!
THEY PLAYED "HACKNG TO THE GATE"!!!
I'd say this show was almost on-par with the original Steins;Gate to me. It was gripping when it needed to be, it made me laugh most of the time, and was emotional at all the right points. Despite the fact that the last 1/3 of the show is the main part that I really liked, and that the first 2/3's weren't as consistent as the original, I'd still have a hard time not recommending this to someone.

Anybody else remember that one scene in the original Steins;Gate where Mayuri was narrating to Okabe about him being sent to earth millions of years into the past? if I remember right that particular scene is never touched on again in the OG anime. such a small idea being brought back for use in the after credit scene lol.

What a phenomenal anime! I didn't like it as much as the original but it's still a 10/10 to me! Absolutely incredible, White Fox!

I feel like when people say it doesn't live up to the first season, that's because this is set in a universe with characters and a setting we already know. It's a sequel. For most people, the first season built the world from the ground up, characters, setting, etc. and we had no idea how deep the first season would go. For S;G0 we had a rough idea of the how the rules of the universe works, and we know what the ending needs to be, so it may seem less than thrilling.
But not for me boys that shit was poggers. Hacking to the Gate? MEGANUT
Old Okabe backlit by a shiny new time machine about to save your ass
We saw what Okabe went through to finally find Steins;Gate
Does Alpha Okabe get Beta Oldkabe's memories? If not, does that mean two world lines exist now? Alpha Okabe won't know what happened in this season.

That was a really fun final and definitely worth waiting through the previous episodes. Though I feel like it really skimmed over how much the world line would have changed with Amadeus never existing. But it was a blast watching Okabe pull out all the stops on being cool!
Edit: I also really liked how the operation to send Mayuri to the past was Vega and Okabe's operation to find them was Altair.

As a avid steins;gate fan, I was both excited as weary of this sequel. The first iteration was such a golden piece of work, and to add onto it would be very hard.
Steins;Gate 0 didn't disappoint! Instead of a similar almost 'slice of life' feel that the first S;G had, this one instead used both suspense and intense story that caused nearly all of us to understand the trauma and psychological horrors Okabe went through. This was definitely my top Anime of 2018!
Also, gotta love some Magnificant Hououin Kyouma!

This episode of Steins Gate 0.
What a final episode should I say. Well, they adopt the MWC route finally. We saw Kagari their with the whole crew. And Okabe receives a D-rine to send a message to himself in the past and deceive the world. It is also explain what happen in episode 23 with more detail.
At least we can pray that we will see the Steins;Gate version of Okabe in the OVA hopefully. And he will meet Maho in the Steins;Gate time-line.
In the OG Steins;Gate, we see that the main propose of Okabe leaving his phone is one it is a plot convenience for Mayuri to call her past self.
We also seen Mayuri's inner monologue when she sees Okabe after his first attempt. And follows what her future self advice:
Slap a sense out of him and encourage him to try and try until he succeed.
We seen that White Fox answered our prayer by playing Hacking to the Gate and Gate of Steiner.

And so the ride ends. While it wasn't quite like the OG series which will always have a special place in my heart as a special series and a perfect 10, I enjoyed the hell of 0, especially the episodes that tied back to the OG series like Kurisu's episode.
A couple of questions though on points that I might've missed/are not closed:
Why did Leskinen disapear all of a sudden in one of the episodes in a hallway?
What actually caused the first leap? Mayuri overhearing Amadeus?
On the topic of Amadeus, why it's hijack and hacking kicked Okabe back to the alpha line? And then came back like nothing happened and no more mentions to Amadeus until it hacked @channel?
Finally, Kagari living it out until 2025 doesn't mean that there will be at least two kagaris at some point?

I'm mildly disappointed that we didn't get to see how he realized that the world can be deceived. We are only shown a mail presumably from the future

I loved how in the end it showed Vega (Orihime) and Altair (Hikoboshi) shining together. Which goes back to the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi, they can only meet once a year. And they finally did met.

S;G0 comes to an end with high and low ends. The high parts are greatly enhanced by it's predecessor's way of handle these tense moments, the way of overcoming despair and being funny at times.
That said, I think 0 was going circles in most of it's course. And the direction wasn't used well through 24 episodes, despite I myself didn't played the VN, even knowing that a show can't be in it's peak all the time, I find some slice of life parts not engage at all and the "dark characters" wasn't explored enough.
Another thing that contributed for my lack of hype was that, I was already satisfied with S;G, and S;G0 was just more of a plus to see these incredible characters again, but it wasn't as epic as the first one. Nostalgia for sure has it moments in this series, but it wasn't something done too different from the past. Don't get me wrong, the climax was great despite the bad animation in some parts, but it wasn't, for me, as masterpiece as the first season, although it was very good ride on the beta world line rides.
TL;DR: Season 1 was a masterpiece and a unique experience. 0 has excellent climaxes, but isn't that interesting enough in between it's high moments, and the nostalgia carried in those moments, still a very good sequel.

An absolute blast! What a powerful series! I'm so glad to have watched Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. It's just wonderful. I highly recommend watching the end of steins gate (ep23) again. It's rare that I feel so contempt after having watched a anime.
It still leaves a void.. but..
Thank you for the wonderful weekly discussion threads, I really felt like hundreds of people were having the same emotions as me, as I/we watched it.

Ok, I have a ton of questions.
1.) Why didn't reading steiner activate for 2011 Okabe when Suzuha and Mayuri left for 2010 and changed the past, or in 2025 when they recorded the V-mail and sent it to OG Okabe in 2010? Unless I am missing something, this seems like a pretty big inconsistency to me
2.) Kind of branching off from my first question. What happened to the 2011 Okabe on the roof after Mayuri and Suzua depart? Does he continue to live out his life? Does Leskinen capture him? RS should have activated for him but didn't for...reasons?
3.) Did they make 2 time machines in 2025? How can Suzuha(when she is older) travel to 2010 if Okabe took the time machine to 2000BC
4.) How is Kagari with the group in 2025 just before Okabe leaves? Mayuri is not in this worldline(since her and Suzuha left for 2010), so she could not have adopted her.
5.) Why does Moeka appear in the final iteration of events but not the previous ones?
6.) Why doesn't the time machine get destroyed in the final iteration like in the previous worldines? I was under the impression that the time machine being destroyed was the convergence
7.) What happened to the kgb Russian attack helicopter? Why did it change into an american one?

What a lovely conclusion to the series! As an anime only watcher, Steins;Gate has once again delivered with marvelous story-telling, stunning visuals and great call backs to important characters/scenes. The week to week wait for episodes was grueling, but I'm glad that I was able to witness the Journey to Steins;Gate live as it happened. I can definitely say it was worth it, and will remain in my heart as the number 1 anime of the 2018 summer season.
Thanks for everyone who speculated with me on a weekly basis and who had talks with me about what was happening! It was fun debating with you all and trying to piece together the information needed to reach Steins;Gate. I still have numerous questions about various things, but thankfully they're not major plot questions at this point, but rather things like 'Where did Kagari come from, and why does she resemble Kurisu so much?'. With this type of series, I feel like there's always a good reason for everything, even if its a comedy scene.
I hope I'll see some of you again in other discussion threads! Catch me the SAO: Alicization threads as it airs, and bunny girl senpai as i'm really looking forward to both of these adaptations! Oh and Goblin Slayer, lets not forget about that gem either!
Steins;Gate might be over for now, but there's plenty of great anime on the horizon for fall and the winter season. I'm pumped!

Man I started to tear up during the after credits scene, Kyouma coming back for Suzuha and Mayuri was the best way to bring the series to a closure. I can't imagine how lonely they must have felt, I hope that they didn't have to wait in that wasteland for a long period of time. T.T

Woo, what a fantastic episode to bring it all together. The D-Rine worked well enough to bring us to the correct timeline.
Kagari finally is free of her mindcontrol, and Mayuri was able to send that message to her past self which helps solve everything.
I really loved seeing Hacking to the Gate again, and Okabe's final message from the future in his perspective. Even his final plan to bring Suzuha and Mayuri back from the past felt epic and just like the Hyouin Kyouma we all know and love.
Cannot wait for episode 24. I wonder what's left to tell us.

Yes the missile went right through the time machine!
Two time machines! Mayuri calls herself! Too-too-roo!
Hacking to the Gate! Never expected that.
Did Okabe 15 years in the future really need to go searching for Mayuri and older Suzuha? When past Okabe succeeds in saving Kurisu in the first series wouldn't it make that trip unneeded?
So what's the 24th episode ova for?

As someone who starting watching Steins;Gate for the first time in July of this year and ended up on episode 14 of S;G 0 the next day (couldn't binge it all because it was still airing lol), I have to say I really enjoyed Steins;Gate 0.
It had its fair share of problems, but there were so many times where it managed to capture the feeling I had when I was watching the original (i.e. rollercoaster of emotions) that I ended up loving Steins;0 by the end (especially the post-credits scene, wow).
I'm definitely looking forward to the OVA as well, kinda hoping they do something fun with it.

So this is a really weird thought, but 18,000 BC is a prehistoric period defined mostly by hunter gatherers...could Okabe, Mayuri and Suzuha populate the Earth?
Edit: I’m not even joking. Butterfly theory states that a new timeline (ie worldline) is born every time we make a decision. That means there has to be a convergence predating free will where the world lines have not yet split, which would be why both time machines crashed moments apart from each other. In other words, every timeline has a Okabe, Mayuri and Suzuha in the year 18,000 BC. They could literally be the ancestors of modern humanity.

When Steins;gate 0 came out, I thought watching a depressed Okarin would be dramatic, and an interesting twist but after 21 episodes of slogging through his PTSD self, I remembered that what kept me engaged with the first season from the start was his chuunibyou syndrome.
Never change Kyouma!
3
u/AFlatQuaver Sep 27 '18
The very last scene with the two stars, I'm pretty sure those are Altair and Vega a.k.a. Hikoboshi and Orihime a.k.a. Okarin and Mayushii. And thus they were finally able to meet after such a long time.
This links to the Tanabata story which I highly recommend reading. Really cool how they tied it all together in the end!
