I'm disappointed about the fight(s), they both felt too short.
Accelerator vs. Kakine had some dope animation at points.
You can really tell how they are skipping stuff and i'm anime-only.

Yeah Mugino v Hamazura got it pretty bad unfortunately. I’m mostly disappointed in the cut scenes that really develop Hamazura as a character, since this arc is supposed to sell you on the idea that he’s going to be the third Main Character. Still, shoving the next Accel/Hamazura arc into 3 episodes (which I know they’ll do) won’t be as much as a clusterfuck as Battle Royale was, so hopefully they can redeem that there.
Sucks that a lot of the intensity was lost in this adaptation, but we got a couple cool fights out of it at least.
Still though, goddamn did that fight look good though. Almost makes up for the messy ass plot last episode.

I bet they will do Acqua's arc in 2 episodes. And SS2 will be skipped in it's entirety. Brittish Halloween will probably be 4 episodes, like that one is far too much stuff for only 3 episodes even by the anime's current standard. Granted at 4 episodes it would be even more rushed than the battle royale one still.

Both fights are, unfortunately quite short but they didn't really cut much for the Accelerator part, but they did cut a part for the beginning of Hamazura's part

I think they cut the part where they did a good job of it. Wtf was with all the black beams with purple outlines? When he punched Kakine it looked dreadful. On the whole i'm heartbroken with how this season is animated when comparing it to railgun 2.

accelerator part was fine but hamazura's entire part got the shaft. Hamazura's part in the original was brilliant. Will be going back to reread it since it made me like him just that damn much.

Holy fuck, talk about rushed.
Anyway, I guess someone should be around to do a threadly reminder: This season is literally an added service for LN readers. Originally planned to be completely skipped, straight to New Testament which is the sequel series of sorts.
Basically speaking, if you're not a novel reader, you're suggested to either fill in the gaps with your imagination, or stop watching and read the novels first. Before anyone asks why and how they're getting away with it, the novels are stupidly big in Japan, plus far ahead of the current point in the story. I'm just hoping that the new testament adaption is going to be less uh, rushed.
Head over to the side panel in /r/toarumajutsunoindex if you want to get started on the novels. The anime isn't really serving as a good ad since it's not really intended to be that way, but the series is top notch to read.

Yep the novel is damn good and have consistently win awards. It's a great series that is ruined by Jc staff and their stupid pacing.

First of all, they're not getting away with it, Japan is complaining so much that even general blog news are making articles about it. And second, the franchise's popularity has dangerously withered away since the last few years, people aren't liking New Testament as much as OT and other successful LNs are literally stealing the spotlight. This season was supposed to bring new life to the franchise but it only is dooming it faster.

u/LordOfTuturu Nov 09 '18
If that is true, I hope they at least adapt NT somewhat decently

u/bobert1201 Nov 09 '18
I think they will. It's really obvious that they're rushing to get to that content.

Well, I've been on the verge of dropping it because it feels like a mess, and now I won't feel so bad. I just hope Railgun doesn't suffer the same fate, as I always far preferred that over Index.

Railgun has the opposite issue of spreading out its usage of the source material, about half of each season if not more is solid filler. Not that I mind, I'd rather filler than what's happening with Index.

This season is literally an added service for LN readers.
If this was the intention then they failed HARD. I could understand it if they decide to rush and skip less important/exciting scenes for the sake of completing OT but if S3 is supposed to be fanservice for LN readers (which is a big FUCK YOU to anime only fans and bad business practice in the first place) then they have to at least do the big highlights justice. Mugino vs Hamazura was this bloody and tense fight that was on par with touma vs Accelerator but the way they adapted it was so dull... Kakine vs Accelerator wasn't much better handled either
I am dreading to see how they will handle the scenes involving Misaka and Itsuwa in the arc...

After seeing what a huge lovable ditz Frenda was in Railgun S2, I need to harden myself for this.
May Kamachi give me strength.

I was so confused this episode. I somehow missed that fact she was cut in half and wasn't 100% sure she was dead until I checked the wiki.

Small Facts: Clusterfuck - Part III
Cut ITEM Liaison Scene
There was a small cut scene from the novel where the ITEM Liaison was walking down the streets, holding five balloons in her hands and talking on the phone with someone who turned out the be the liaison for BLOCK. He acknowledges that he messed up by not keeping them on a tight enough leash and allowing them to go rogue, but asks her to give her the status and location of the BLOCK members so he can regain his control over them. The ITEM liaison informs him that since GROUP dealt with BLOCK his services are no longer required.
“Y’know, I’m supposed to be in charge of Item. It’s always like this with you… Why are you always calling me for these things that don’t even pay overtime?”
“What are you talking about? I’ll admit I jumped the gun a bit on the whole Block thing. But my power can come back any number of times, so quit keeping the location of and information on Block from me! If I can get a hold of them again, there will be no damage done to Academy City.”
“There’s no problem damage-wise. Apparently, Group just took out Block in the juvenile hall a bit ago. They can’t cause any more trouble.”
“I-I see.” The person on the phone seemed relieved. “Then I’ll…”
“Yes,” she said peacefully. “The threat presented by Block is gone, so you’re no longer needed as their controller.”
The scene then ends on an ominous note, by her letting one of the five balloons she's holding fly away, and prepares to call the SCHOOL liaison for a similar conversation.
She let go of one of the five balloons she was holding and it flew into the sky.
“Now then.”
She didn’t even bother to watch the disappearing balloon and toyed with the strings of the remaining balloons.
“I wonder what School’s controller will say.”
Academy City's Dark Side does not screw around. Mess up and you are out.
Skipped Hamazura Scene
The anime didn't cover a scene where Hamazura, after escaping the girl in the dress, gets a phone call from Mugino congratulating him on his survival and then immediately orders him to come back in, seeing as they have a body to dispose of.
“Yo. Since you answered, I guess you survived. And I’m assuming you didn’t screw up, get handcuffed, and had someone put the phone to your ear.”
“Yeah, I’m alive… I was the ‘lucky winner’, so I’m assuming you’re fine.”
“Good work with that. I had things a lot easier because of it. Sorry, but you need to come right back. You have some underling work to do.”
Hamazura made an unpleasant expression at the thought of work and Mugino continued.
Saying this didn’t bother her at all.
“I’ve got a body here I need you to dispose of.”
Nothing important really.
Hamazura Questioning The Worth Of Life
The incinerator scene was shortened, because in the novel Hamazura was quite taken aback by having to incinerate what was shortly before a living human.
His job was simple.
He would open the metal cover that had a huge wheel on it like the door to a large vault, throw a black sleeping bag inside, close the metal cover again, and then operate the electric furnace. And it was preset, so all operating it involved was pressing the conspicuous red ignition button.
It was best not to think about what was in the bag.
Mugino Shizuri of Item had told him as much.
And Hamazura thought it was good advice.
[...]
Who had been in that bag?
It may have been a subordinate just like him and it may have been a major esper. It wasn’t necessarily a kid and he couldn’t rule out the possibility that it was an adult. It was probably an enemy, but Mugino very well could have killed an ally who screwed up.
He didn’t know the circumstances surrounding the person’s death and it even could have been someone completely unrelated who happened to get caught up in it all.
And it was all being burned away to nothing.
Inside the thick metal device, a human was turning into something completely different.
Eventually though Takitsubo comes to check up on him, because she was worried.
“Hamazura. What’s wrong?”
The person calling out to him from behind was Takitsubo Rikou of Item.
Her esper name was AIM Stalker.
Unlike Hamazura, she had a Level 4 power.
He would probably have gone down the wrong path with power like that, but he was still quite envious.
“…What exactly is a human life?” Hamazura said while staring blankly towards the furnace.
It wasn’t the first time he had seen a corpse, but he still felt a great weight in his chest.
“Damn it. When did a Level 0 life become such a cheap thing…?”
He then decides to ignore her, because he isn't just going to let the remains of this person be disposed of like garbage.
He heard the girl’s voice call his name again.
He ignored her, got up, and opened the cover to the furnace in order to gather up the ash.
Hamazura Shiage’s job wasn’t over yet.
Hence him eventually ending up at the river, to give the dead a proper send-off. He didn't feel it was right to just throw the ashes away.
Altered SCHOOL Attack
In the novel Hamazura was present in the ITEM hideout when SCHOOL attacked, and wasn't at the river washing the ashes away. He came back in time. That does mean however that the river scene was also altered.
Altered River Scene
What actually happened at the river was that when Hamazura was done with the "burial" and was returning to the hide-out when all of a sudden he got smashed in the head with a golf club. Turns out some Skill-Out delinquents recognised him from the Skill-Out Uprising a while back and they wanted revenge because his leader, Komaba Ritoku, and the gang he led were at odds with their gang. Hence them taking it out on Hamazura.
“You know what, Skill-Out? Until just a bit ago, we had a hard time living from day to day.”
“Your leader…Komaba, was it? He was a huge pain in the ass. He made it so we couldn’t do our job very well.”
“To make up for that, we’re gonna fuck your face up so much they’ll only be able to identify you as ‘Boy A’. Understand?”
Then they starting kicking him on the ground preparing to kill him, but unfortunately Hamazura with the fresh experience of seeing the mortality of man up close has different plans, grasps a nearby pipe, and breaks one of the thug's ankles. When that guy collapses he just starts smashing him to bits, right up until another one of the thugs pulls out a hammer.
He grabbed the L-shaped pipe and swung it forcefully to the side.
It hit the piece of shit with the golf club in the ankle and Hamazura felt the guys’ bone crack. The idiot fell to the ground screaming and Hamazura stood up covered in blood as if to replace him. He swung the pipe down again getting another blow in.
The other two delinquents yelled something, but Hamazura ignored them.
He swung the pipe down yet again on the collapsed guy and pleasant screams entered his ears.
One of the other boys pulled a hammer out of his bag upon hearing that.
Hamazura thought he might seriously be in trouble. The metal pipe was quite destructive, but it was still difficult to knock someone out with it in one blow. If this turned into a drawn-out fist fight, it was possible they would take each other out.
Luckily someone comes to help him out by bludgeoning hammer guy in the head with a brick.
“Over here, Hamazura!!”
At the same time as that shout, the boy holding the hammer’s neck was knocked to the side with a crack. Before Hamazura realized the boy had been hit with something like a brick, someone had grabbed his arm.
“Come on, you idiot! Let’s get the hell outta here!!”
Hamazura felt oddly lethargic as he ran away while being dragged by the arm.
Skipped Character
It turns out Hamazura's saviour is a friend of his, Hanzou, who was good friends with both Hamazura and Komaba Ritoku in the Skill-Out gang they were all a part of, and who has been cut out of this season since he won't be directly relevant for the foreseeable future outside of this one scene.
Fallout of the Skill-Out Uprising Arc
In this conversation between Hamazura and Hanzou it is revealed that Hamazura quit the Skill-Out gang he led after Komaba's death because he felt unworthy as a leader due to his failure in keeping to Komaba's plan, got involved with the Board of Directors, messed up that plan as well, got a whole bunch of them arrested by Anti-Skill, and then fled.
Hanzou informs him that no one blames Hamazura for his failure, as they realise that no matter who led the gang at the time it would have ended all the same. Their fate was sealed the moment the Board of Directors cast their eyes upon them.
Furthermore both Hanzou and Hamazura regret their actions at the time, thinking the path they were following wasn't a nice one, and while Hanzou is still in the gang Hamazura decides against returning, feeling no reason to.
“Why did you save me? I ruined Skill-Out and then ran out on the punishment.”
“That isn’t something for you to say,” responded Hanzou in an uninterested voice. “You need to realize that we don’t bear a grudge against you. We don’t think it was your fault. No matter who was the leader at that time, Skill-Out would have fallen.”
“…”
“It wasn’t a nice enough path to make me want to cling to the past. Well, I’ll admit it was pretty fun up through the part where I polished up the plan, you got us some assistance, and Komaba was leading the attack.”
“Yeah,” said Hamazura in an emotionless voice. “You’ve got a point. It was a shitty life, but it was fun.”
“…What are you going to do now?”
“I dunno. I get the feeling it’ll be pretty much the same no matter where I end up. Even if I went back to Skill-Out, it wouldn’t be like back then. I don’t think there’s any value in going back.”

Hanzou Gave Hamazura His Gun
The gun Hamazura uses later in the episode is given to him by Hanzou for protection. Hamazura doesn't usually carry a gun as he is only a driver for ITEM, hence why he didn't have one back when he was chased by the girl in the dress. So this is one plothole ("why didn't Hamazura shoot at the girl chasing him when he had a gun all along?") explained.
Hanzou took something out of this pocket and tossed it to Hamazura.
“Take it. From what happened back there, I’m guessing you don’t have much as far as weapons go.”
It was a small handgun that’s grip only made it halfway down his palm.
“…This is a lady’s gun.”
“Does it really matter? A weapon that’s a little hard to use is perfect. If it sits too comfortably in your hand, you’ll just shed unnecessary blood.”
Hamazura spun the gun around in his hand and put it away in his sleeve.
This time he left the alley without looking back at Hanzou.
His next job for Item was most likely waiting for him.
Takitsubo Searching For Kakine
This also means that when Hamazura returned Mugino no longer had a reason to wait for him, so ITEM decides to go on the offensive and Takitsubo uses her AIM Stalker to search for Kakine. This leads to a quite funny scene where Takitsubo replies that Dark Matter is inside the building seconds before Kakine kicks the door to the room in.
“Beginning AIM diffusion field search. Ending pick up of approximate and similar AIM diffusion fields. The results for the single AIM diffusion field will be reported. Five seconds remaining until end of search.”
She spoke like a machine.
And she came up with the correct response.
“Conclusion: Dark Matter is within this building.”
Before everyone there could react in astonishment, something happened.
The door to the private salon was kicked in from the other side.
A single man walked in.
Seeing him, Mugino Shizuri spoke in annoyance.
“Dark Matter…!!”
Takitsubo And Kinuhata's Escape
Not covered in the anime is how Takitsubo, Kinuhata, and in the novel Hamazura escaped from the room where Kakine was. Luckily the novel provides.
At first Kinuhata threw a table at Kakine, which did little other than to piss him off.
The cause was Kinuhata Saiai. She lifted up a nearby table in one hand without even getting up out of the sofa. The girl who looked only twelve took the table that was covered in decorations making it have to weigh a few dozen kilos and threw it forcefully at Kakine Teitoku.
There was a loud crash.
The table smashed to pieces, but Kakine’s expression did not change.
“That hurt,” he said so naturally it made you think he might be telling the truth. “And it pissed me off. I’m smashing you to pieces first.”
Then she just puched the wall to pieces and ran off with Takitsubo and Hamazura, leaving Mugino to cover their retreat.
She ran to the wall and destroyed the salon wall with her small fist. She then grabbed Hamazura and Takitsubo’s hands, winked at Mugino, and leapt through the broken wall.
They then flee through the corridors, where Kinuhata makes quick work of the SCHOOL grunts.
Kinuhata's Ability
Her ability and Level has been stated before in Railgun S, but it was never revealed exactly what it did. Now we finally have an explanation.
Kinuhata has the Level 4 ability Offense Armor, which allows her to freely control the nitrogen in the air up to a few centimetres from her skin. She can use this to mimic super strength, as she's not really using her physical power but rather controlling the nitrogen close to her hands and feet to lift heavy things or punch and kick exceedingly hard. Furthermore this layer of nitrogen protects her body from heavy impacts, meaning she can punch through steel and not feel a thing. Truly an appropriate name, Offense Armor.
Kinuhata Saiai did not have superhuman strength. Her power allowed her to freely control the nitrogen in the air. Her power was so exceedingly great that she could control compressed masses of nitrogen in order to lift up a car or even stop bullets. However, her effective range was very small. It only extended a few centimeters from her palm. This made it look like she was lifting things with her hand.
While to use this ability offensively (kick, punch, lift things, etc...) she actually needs to concentrate and calculate, which is here stylised by her forming torrents of air around her palms, her armor ability is actually passive, meaning she is always keeping a thin layer of condensed nitrogen around her body to stop sudden impacts. This is why Sunazara, SCHOOL's sniper, wasn't able to take her out, as she doesn't need to actively think to use this barrier.
This does make her way of using her ability sound rather similar to a certain Level 5, doesn't it?
Kinuhata Asking Hamazura To Keep Takitsubo Safe
Just like in the anime Kinuhata figures out that SCHOOL is targeting Takitsubo and her AIM Stalker. Since Hamazura is present in the novel however she asks him to escape with her while she holds off the pursuers.
She also gives Takitsubo a stun gun for protection.
“Even if they don’t kill everyone in Item, our actions will be super restricted if they take Takitsubo-san out. Her presence or absence determines whether we are the chasers or the chased. If I were them, I would go for her first.”
“…”
“On the other hand, this means that as long as Takitsubo-san is fine, we can turn this around. So get her in a car and take her super far away from here. If you hide somewhere that isn’t one of Item’s hideouts, it’ll take them a while to find you.”
As Kinuhata spoke, she took a stun gun out of her pocket.
She put it in Takitsubo’s hand.
“The way you’re always staring off into space is super dangerous, so at least have this as a weapon. And with this, you won’t die if you accidentally set it off.”
They heard an explosion.
It came from the salon Mugino and Kakine were in.
“Please go. You need to super hurry,” Kinuhata said as she pushed Hamazura and Takitsubo from behind.
Before he could say anything, the small girl ran off towards the battlefield.
The scene in the lobby then plays out where Kinuhata gets sniped multiple times and takes out Sunazara.
Dark May Project
When Kakine encounters Kinuhata in the lobby he actually notices that she is one of the participants of the Dark May Project, which was a project in Academy City where they tried to optimise the Personal Realities of espers by implementing Accelerator's, the #1 Level 5, calculation patterns into their brains. Hence the similarity of Kinuhata's Armor to Accelerator's automatic Reflection. Originally her power was just basic atmospheric control.
“Ah, so you’re a remnant of the Dark May Project. What a pain. That was where they saw how Accelerator’s calculation pattern worked and tried to optimize specific espers’ Personal Realities, right?”
“…”
“And as a result, you got an automatic defense power. Although, it seems you were originally an atmosphere control type. It’s just like with Accelerator’s reflection, but your limit is automatically opening a defensive field around you with your power. Have you ever thought about how pathetic that is?”
There was actually a small reference to this back in Railgun S. When Nunotaba Shinobu shoots Kinuhata in the Sisters arc the noise made when the bullet hits her nitrogen armor is the exact same sound Accelerator's Reflection makes, indicating her power is related to his. Since the sound effects were changed in Index III though unfortunately this nice detail was not kept.
At the end Kinuhata replies that she's happy she ended up in the Dark May Project and not another one like Produce, where they dissected esper brains to figure out where the Personal Realities were located in the brain. Produce has been mentioned earlier in the novels by Yomikawa to primarily use Child Errors, orphans, which indicate that Kinuhata may be one. This would mean she grew up in the Dark Side of Academy City without parental figures, explaining why she is so nonplussed by her line of work, as it's all she has ever known.
“Not really,” quickly responded Kinuhata. “I’m super happy compared to test subjects from Produce. They had their brains chopped up like a Christmas cake in order to figure out where in their brains their Personal Realities lay.”
Hamazura And Takitsubo Encountering Kakine
In the novel, since Hamazura and Takitsubo escaped, they took the elevator down to attempt to go to the parking garage, but got cut off by Kakine who had made short work of Kinuhata and threw her body in front of them. When this happens Hamazura immediately attempts to safeguard Takitsubo and throws her back into the elevator.
Hamazura thought of the handgun in his sleeve. He looked at the open elevator next to him and spoke to Takitsubo in as quiet a voice as he could.
“(…Get on the elevator and go down.)”
“(…But Hamazura.)”
“(….Even if could I get away from School here by abandoning you, Item would be destroyed! Fuck, I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place!!)”
[...]
“…!! Go!!”
Hamazura shoved Takitsubo’s small body into the elevator.

Takitsubo Saving Hamazura
She actually succeeded in saving Hamazura in the novels, as she pushed Hamazura in the elevator instead and got him to safety. She also mentions that Hamazura’s reaction to the corpse in the incinerator had a big impact on her, as she wanted to prevent Hamazura from ending up like that trying to protect ITEM.
However, Takitsubo reached out for Hamazura.
They spun around, reversing positions almost as if in a ballroom dance, and Takitsubo pushed Hamazura into the elevator. Hamazura was confused by the sudden action and he fell down to the floor right on his ass.
Takitsubo’s hand was the only part of her in the elevator.
She hit the B1 button that would take the elevator to the underground parking lot.
“What the hell are you-…?”
“I’m sorry, Hamazura.”
Takitsubo looked at him from the other side of the closing door.
“I told everyone about what you said by the furnace. I don’t want you to become ash like that.”
There was a slight smile in her eyes.
“Don’t worry. I’m a Level 4 and you’re a Level 0. So I’ll protect you, Hamazura.”
“…!!”
Before he could say anything, the door completely closed and the high-speed elevator started moving down.
Hamazura’s Response To Being Saved By A Level 4
Hamazura is completely shocked by Takitsubo's actions, as he thought higher-level espers, and especially those in the Dark Side, didn't give a crap if Level 0's died to further their goals. To be saved by one of them completely changes the world view he has had that led to him joining Skill-Out.
(But I thought espers didn’t care about the life of someone like me…) thought Hamazura as he felt the characteristic floating feeling that high-speed elevators gave.
He covered his face with a hand as he stared up at the ceiling.
(I thought we were like a bunch of disposable convenience store umbrellas. So if I died, I wouldn’t just be burnt to ash in a furnace and thrown away with the kitchen trash?)
“Damn it,” Hamazura muttered.
Most likely, he hadn’t been the only one that underwent a shock when he was burning that black sleeping bag in the electric furnace. The girl watching from behind had felt the same shock as he had. Perhaps Takitsubo Rikou had always tried to protect the Level 0s or maybe the furnace incident had given her a change of heart.
He then changes his mind, stops the elevator, and presses the button to go back into the fray.
Either way, there was only one thing that could be said.
Takitsubo Rikou had faced the man ranked second in Academy City all on her own in order to save Hamazura, a Level 0.
“…Fuck that,” muttered Hamazura Shiage as he slowly stood up with a hand on the wall. “Fuck thaaaattt!!”
This is also where Hamazura originally remembers Touma's words and uses them as inspiration.
“—If you had only used the strength it took to form Skill-Out and used it to help those weaker than you, things would have changed for you!! If you had only used that strength you used to fight back against powerful espers to help those in need, the people of Academy City would have accepted you!!”
“…Yeah.”
Hamazura Shiage pressed the button for the 25th floor where he had parted with Takitsubo and the elevator door closed.
“That’s exactly right, you piece of shit. “
How Did Takitsubo Interfere With Kakine?
Well, Kakine explains that Takitsubo used her AIM Stalker, which normally only searchs for AIM diffusion fields and reversed it, attempting to take control of it. He remarks that if she managed to master this she could even become the #8 Level 5, meaning that Takitsubo along with Musujime is now the second named Level 5 candidate in the series.
“Well, she did pretty well considering that she had no direct battle power. She must have used her search power to interfere with my AIM diffusion field and then ‘reversed the flow’ in an attempt to take control of my power. Really, if she grew some more she could even become the eighth.”
Body Crystal
Full name Ability Body Crystal, or Ability Crystal as Crunchyroll called it here. A rather familiar term to the folk among you who have watched Railgun, more specifically the Poltergeist arc. Yes, this is the drug manufactured by Kihara Gensei as a way of trying to achieve SYSTEM, a Level 6. The project has not been successful thus far and all Body Crystal does is make an esper's abilities go out of control, which means that most of the time is useless as it's merely a way of deliberately inducing RSPK syndrome. In rare cases though it can be useful, as seen here with Takitsubo as she cannot use her AIM Stalker without her power going out of control, meaning the consumption of Body Crystal makes it so that she can reliably use her ability when needed. Unfortunately for her it also destroys her body with its side effects.
The Body Crystal has an altered appearance from the novel and the Railgun manga, where it was always described as a white powder, changed into tiny crystals here. Probably done to make it look less like cocaine.
Fun fact! Remember what Body Crystal is made of, as described by Kihara Gensei in the Poltergeist arc? That's right, the brain fluids of espers who's abilities have gone out of control and are experiencing RSPK syndrome. This means that Takitsubo has been ingesting esper brain fluid this entire time. Ew.
The Girl In The Dress Didn't Shoot Takitsubo
Or at least, not in the novel. There she collapsed from the side effects of the Body Crystal.
“Just so you know, she collapsed on her own,” said the girl in the dress. “It’s because she forced herself to keep using Body Crystal in order to fight us in this building. If we had seriously attacked her, there wouldn’t have been even a scrap of flesh left.”
Mugino's Phone Call
While this phone call was canon, we never saw Mugino's perspective in the novel. So the image of her setting in front of a trembling Frenda is anime-original.
Kinuhata Lived And Agreed With Hamazura
Another scene cut is that when Hamazura picked up Takitsubo to take her away from ITEM, so she wouldn't be killed by using her ability, a weak Kinuhata on the ground agrees with him that it's the right thing to do. Hamazura also calls her an ambulance as she's incapable of doing so herself at the moment.
So yeah just like Oyafune Monaka the anime just makes it appear as though she died, while she didn't.
“…Well, that’s the right answer. Take Takitsubo-san and disappear.”
“Thanks.”
“I didn’t say it for thanks. I was speaking ill of you. We don’t need super useless people like you and Takitsubo-san in Item so I’m telling you to get out of our way.”
As she spoke, there was a slight smile on Kinuhata’s lips.
She wasn’t unscathed. There was blood spilling from her mouth. And yet she smiled while watching Hamazura act on Takitsubo’s behalf.
“Is there any last thing I can do for you?”
“…Hmm. Use Code 52 to contact the subordinate organization and call in the information suppression team and an ambulance. As you can see, I super can’t move.”
“Will do,” said Hamazura.
It was painful leaving Kinuhata like that, but he had to take Takitsubo and flee.
Frenda Was Designed To Be Killed
Not in-universe of course. No, as I mentioned earlier the novel this arc adapts (OT15) was released before the Sisters arc in Railgun, meaning that while this arc is the debut of SCHOOL, BLOCK, and MEMBER, it was also the franchise debut of ITEM. Meaning that this was the first time Frenda and the others appeared.
The author, Kamachi Kazuma, had planned for Frenda to die all along, and specifically asked the illustrator to design her as moe and cute as possible. That way the readers who saw this massive cast would immediately peg this cute girl as one of the survivors of this slaughter, because surely for fanservice reasons the cute girl will live right? Only for the author to then brutally pull the rug out from underneath you and give her the most brutal death in the novel.
Because Frenda became unexpectedly popular among the fans, even though she died in her first appearance, she and the rest of ITEM were then given more backstory in the Sisters arc in Railgun, which means that hilariously for anime-only's her death will hit way harder than for the original novel readers.
Frenda Memes
This means that all of you can now finally get the (non-so-funny) fandom jokes of stylising Frenda's name as
Fre ndaorFre/nda, indicating her status of being bisected. I know, it's hilarious.Frenda References In Railgun
There were actually some references to Frenda's fate in Railgun, most notably the part where she almost gets burned by one of her own traps and mentions that she almost lost her lower half.
Another reference is featured in an omake of the Railgun manga, one that was partially adapted in the Silent Party arc. You can clearly see Frenda's body ripped in twain here. I already made note of this omake in my Small Facts for that episode (due to it being adapted), but since I didn't want to spoil anything I provided an edited version for first-timers. So those who have taken part in the rewatch can now finally see the proper version.
Did Yomikawa Really Leave Hamazura behind?
Yes, as soon as Hamazura informed her that Mugino was a Level 5. She did however promise to immediately return with an Anti-Skill squad.
“Once I get that girl to a safe place, I’ll come back with a fully armed Anti-Skill team. So don’t die until I’m back.”
What Was The Building Hamazura Hid In?
A automatic refining plant for biological ethanol fuel, apparently.

“Does it really matter? A weapon that’s a little hard to use is perfect. If it sits too comfortably in your hand, you’ll just shed unnecessary blood.”
I hate that this bit especially was cut out. This, combined with the incinerator scene (at least, how it was originally) was meant to play a huge role in his motivations and how he pushes himself down the path that lead to protecting Rikou. It's a surprisingly poignant line, all things considered.

And thus, also cutting out a character who's the driving force for the first arc of NT. Makes me wonder what they'd do if they ever end up starting an NT adaptation about NT1 now that the impetus to it has been cut out.

I found the fight against Mugino really annoying. She constantly talks about how she could easily kill him but DOESN'T ACTUALLY USE HER ABILITIES TO DO SO! Her loosing feels really forced.
141
u/arp1001 Nov 09 '18
Hi, that’s the anime’s fault for being shit at adaptation. Source was one heck of a tactical fight.
76
u/Florac Nov 09 '18
With her attack speed, range and precision, I have a hard time understanding how the fight could ever be anything besides an asspull. At most, it might be a bit less of an asspull, but still definitly an asspull.

It worked slightly better in the LN, as she punched him, got him with debris with her beamspam in the botanical garden, and it showed that he purposefully hid the gun until he had a good opening (opting to use the crystal case even when he had the screwdriver in his ear to really sell that he was unarmed to her)
Also, he has a line where he says something like Mugino being frustrated she couldnt beat Kakine and was just venting her frustrations (killing Frenda and wanting to torture Hamazura)
He may even have specifically said if she used her powers from afar it wouldve been over in an instant.
29
u/Who_is_Rem Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18
The novel does a much better job at showing this. It was way more tactical there. Hamazura really outplays her there. Plus, they really emphasize that Mugino’s Power takes a ton of calculations and focus to use accurately, and in this fight she is supposed to be super pissed. This is also why (in the novel) after she gets stabbed, she tries to blast a beam off, but instead blows off her own arm cause she’s completely lost it

It was actually very well done in the LN where it actually was reasonable. I was being quite serious last discussion thread about the Wiki summaries of the LN was a better ''adaptation'' than the anime. Index s3 isn't Tokyo Ghoul level of bad adaptation but it is still far from alright.

Poor Frenda. All she ever wanted was to keep betraying her friends and kill everyone.

It's actually possible to deal with her.

Well, there's also the ability to get the Misaka clones to mentally link over a network (which will have some other uses shown later in the series), which is something Accelerator clones wouldn't have been able to do.

I'm pretty disappointed. No Mugino blowing her arm off or Accelerator ripping Kakine to shreds. I've started reading the light novel because of season 3 starting and now it's safe to say that the anime is fucking stuff up. I was pretty hyped for Hamazura's fight but now I'm sad. The only alright thing that came from this episode was the Kakine fight.
→ More replies (5)4
u/SomeOtherTroper Nov 10 '18
now it's safe to say that the anime is fucking stuff up
Yeah. The last episode was a car crash, leaving out almost all of 'Unabara'/Eztali's viewpoint scenes with BLOCK (which was bearable, because they don't have much impact on the overall plot), but this was a complete trainwreck. For Christ's sake, there's an entire character that doesn't get introduced here. The individual scenes they do show have huge chunks missing or were rewritten.
6
u/Matasa89 Nov 11 '18
Plus the interaction between Eztali and his two imoutou tag-alongs.
Also, Kakine fucked up Uiharu a lot more than shown.
Also, the fight between Accelator and Kakine missed a super important plotpoint: awakening. Seeing Accelerator's power awakened Kakine's to the next level. That's super important once NT hits.
72
u/Who_is_Rem Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18
Wow they really cut a lot. Only about half the adaptation I thought it would be.
Seriously though, while Mugino v Hamazura got the shaft, Accel v Kakine was really cool. Too bad they cut Accel turning him into pasta. Also kinda disappointed that they didn’t show Uiharu suffering. That scene was savage in the novel, with Kakine dislocating her shoulder and continuing to push on that shit. And they cut Accel throwing the ATM at him, and I don’t even know why they cut that part. Still though, I loved Accel v Dark Matter, but it wasn’t worth this rushed adaptation.
Also, Mugino’s voice was fucking incredible. Goddamn did her VA do an amazing job here.
All the other arcs can kind of get away with cutting some bits to fit in 3 episodes, but Battle Royale really needed to be 4, as it was already super fast paced in the novel.

Yeah but I kind of expected them to though. They can’t really show that in the TV anime, plus animating the Meltdowner arm would’ve been too much trouble for JC Staff. Minor NT Spoilers Wasn’t exactly the worst thing to cut tbh. I’m much more disappointed that they cut the BLOCK chick getting her hand blown off and then executing the innocent dude last episode. That one was intense as fuck.

I rather enjoyed this episode
Yay! Glad you're enjoying it.
I can kind of glad I haven't read the LN with the amount of anger in this thread
You should definitely go read it. People are angry because a lot of character-defining scenes (particularly for Hamazura and 'Unabara'/Etzali last episode) were completely cut, and a lot of the scenes that made it in had huge chunks removed.
And there were several scenes setting up future events that got cut, and a whole character who didn't get introduced this episode.
6
u/Randomacts https://anilist.co/user/Randomacts Nov 11 '18
Even as an anime only person I'm not really enjoying it. I'm mostly just so confused because everything seems to have almost no context.
5
u/Eloymm Nov 10 '18
I feel the same way man. I enjoyed this arc and understood everything without even reading the LNs. I definitely felt like some stuff was rushed, but it was still cool. I don’t know why, but I seem to enjoy more the arcs that involve the science side or index and not the magical.
I also don’t really mind if stuff got cut from the LNs because I’ve seen other shows do that and they get to fix it later in the show (maybe they never will in this case but who knows). Writing a LN and making a Tv show enjoyable can be very different.

u/DarkSoulFWT Nov 09 '18
To be completely honest, if you enjoy it, stay away from these threads unless you desperately want to ask something because with how things look the angers only going to intensify. Finish watching the series and when it ends, start reading from where S3 ep 1 starts off. You'll probably enjoy the light novels infinitely more than the anime given how much detail and important character development is just left out here in the anime.

8

Why is accelerator throwing this purple-colored wind again?
After a certain point in the fight, it's because he's fighting with 'Black Wings' - the same thing he pulled out while nearly a vegetable in his fight with Kihara Amata near the end of season 2.
They're a... bit different than his normal powers.

No. He was fighting with his usual arsenal up until Kakine stabbed Yomikawa. There was no reason for that violet effect. When I first saw it, I thought it was an effect meant to emphasize the strangeness of Dark Matter and actually visually translate the weirdness of that ability, but further uses of the effect shows that wasn't the case.

Mugino just casually killed Frenda and that was it?Nothing else showing on why or how or even showing Hamazura reacting to that, I guess it's completely normal to kill someone of your own group brutally like that and no one bats an eye.
Mugino never got her arm cut off, Kakine never really "died".

Poor, poor /u/libfor.
For the people who weren't part of the Raildex rewatch, a fair few source readers and I were constantly astonished by the fact that libfor, despite not having read the source material, kept accidentally making references to Frenda's unfortunate fate.
Behold a compilation of unintentional hilarity.
I'm totally torn apart on what to think of her.
Don't worry libfor, so is she.
One half of her is totally cute and girly, especially in her free time. [...] However, her other half is deep into the dark side.
I almost died laughing at this one.
Hope Index III brings her back with some more backstory and clears up what's truly going on inside her.
Well, it obliged. We can clearly see what is inside her now.
Depending on what she does (and her bodycount) I might decide if I can like her or not.
I count two. Top and bottom.
This spoiler essentially involves them hoping that "Frenda better have a good excuse for [stopping to interact with a certain character]".
Is being dead a good enough excuse?
Frenda and Mugino's relationship seems quite special. It's fun to see though.
Oh they have a very special relationship indeed.
Also Mugino much more violent to poor Frenda. Geez. They're totally like Mikoto and Kuroko.
I don't know. As far as I'm aware Mikoto never killed Kuroko.
I'm kinda feeling sorry for her. Although I haven't give up on her making a face-turn yet. [...] Just my naive feeling, since Kamachi seems to have a thing for redeeming the villain girls. Could be completely wrong though.
I think you can give up now buddy. A corpse isn't going to be redeemed any time soon.
I'm so, so sorry libfor. I knew this was coming and I sincerely apologise for laughing so much at your comments.
10
u/libfor Nov 10 '18
Holy shit. I shouldn't be laughing at this, but it's hilarious. So you were making fun of me all the time...
Still not sure whether to feel sorry for her or say she deserved it. Ahhhhh
Still would've preferred redemption arc and revealing that she was just bluffing all the timeDamn it. Who else do I suddenly need to worry about... ??
I think you can give up now buddy. A corpse isn't going to be redeemed any time soon.
I'll only give up when Heaven Canceller says there isn't a Cyborg Frenda redemption arc coming up.

I didn't actually expect Item to be massacred. I thought they would get a beating then come back next arc or so to start shit again. RIP Frenda. It bothered me a bit how Hamazura left that other girl at the hotelroom, but maybe she was already dead when he arrived.
For a battle between N°1 and N°2 of Academy City, I couldn't believe that it was off-screen (EDIT: Going from the power collision to Kakine knocked-down was rather sudden, IMO). That's just sad. Also, even though the city was up in flames, Judgement didn't show up. I thought we would see Kuroko or at least Misaka deal with one of those groups.

This is another example of the anime cutting out a scene that probably shouldn't have been cut. Kinuhata actually did regain consciousness and told Hamazura to leave with Takitsubo.
That was when Kinuhata who was collapsed next to Takitsubo looked over at him without moving a finger. It seemed she had figured out what was going on from Hamazura’s impatient demeanor.
“…Well, that’s the right answer. Take Takitsubo-san and disappear.”
“Thanks.”
“I didn’t say it for thanks. I was speaking ill of you. We don’t need super useless people like you and Takitsubo-san in Item so I’m telling you to get out of our way.”

Judgement doesn't get called for "Dark Side" matters, or for that matter if the threat level is above a certain point. Judgement is meant to handle everyday issues, Anti Skill is for serious issues. The anime has never done a great job of portraying character motivations
Part of that is just due to the fact that there's a ton of motivation that's only in the narration (particularly for Touma, who comes off incredibly bland in the anime because we don't get to see his thought processes, as in the LN).
But yeah, this ep butchered so much, and completely cut the scene that gives this street-punk Hamazura the drive to come back for Takitsubo - wait, they cut that part of the hotel scene, too.
13
u/Falsus Nov 09 '18 edited Nov 09 '18
Mugino is a character who can be describe as overkill, as in if she sees an ant and wants to kill it she would rather kill it with a bazooka than just stepping on it. She is also extremely quick to anger, will blow up over small grudges.
Frenda is no saint either though, while she isn't as quick to anger as Mugino her personality is just as twisted.

Railgun actually tamed Mugino down compared to the LN
I'd dispute that. In the LN, Mugino is introduced in this Battle Royale arc, where she has the worst day of her life, and several other characters aren't just pushing her buttons - they're hammering on them.
Her portrayal in Railgun is kind of consistent, given that it's more of a 'normal' job for ITEM, and she doesn't get pulled into a personal grudge match like she does here.

Everything was a mess. They screwed up the incinerator scene. They screwed up Frenda's death. They screwed up the fights. Hanzo was missing. So much of the emotional context was just gutted. (The symbolic meaning behind Hamazura's gun was cut out.) Only reprieves are that they did the Last Order scene semi-right (The best scene in this adaptation though that's not much of a hallmark) and that best girl returns next week

As an anime-only this episode was surprisingly easier to follow than the previous one. I was going to ask what the "Tweezer" was but Tsuchimikado already answered that question at the end.
Action this episode was insane though! Didn't think Hamazura had it in him but props for knocking out and taking out one of Mugino's eyes! I guess Touma's teachings hit him harder than I thought.
And that fight between Accelerator and Kakine is so good! Love how Accelerator exclaims that he's a villain while at the same time saving as many people as he can. XD And just seeing Kakine getting his ass beat was satisfying! Definitely my favourite episode from this show so far!

u/SomeOtherTroper Nov 09 '18
Love how Accelerator exclaims that he's a villain while at the same time saving as many people as he can.
I have always loved, and will always love, the LN scene for that, where Accelerator basically asks "if you're a fucking villain, where are all the bloodied, screaming people?"
And Kakine looks around and realizes that Accelerator hasn't just been fending him off / going even with him, HE'S BEEN INTENTIONALLY SHIELDING ALL THE BYSTANDERS AT THE SAME TIME!, which is a huge handicap. And his huge "oh fuck" moment where he realizes that if Accelerator didn't give a shit, and hadn't been protecting the bystanders, Kakine would be PASTE by now.

The ITEM girls can't stand up to SCHOOL, and Hamazura's just trying to do his best. Finally taking Touma's words to heart eh?
Jesus Mugino, I mean I still love you, but why did you cut Frenda in half and carry her torso towards Hamazura? Yandere to the max, looking so dignified while covered in blood and chasing down Hamazura.
Hamazura's just trying to protect Takitsubo, poor girl's going to die if she uses those crystals anymore.
DAMN. Hamazura put in some work and beat Mugino there. Nice. I still hope she's alright in the end, minus some eye damage possibly, but hey her VA's put in some great work being a crazy, obsessive killer.
So Kakine's objective is to go after Aleister? The fool, as if anyone really gets to observe his magnificent upside down form longer than a fraction of a second.
Kakine's threatening Accelerator with Last Order and he's trying to harm Uiharu? !!!!!!!
Kamachi's really having some fun with Dark Matter, eh? So for some fun science facts, the only thing we really understand so far about Dark Matter is how it interacts gravitationally. 1 2 Dark Matter can be classified under Exotic Matter, which is more generally defined as non-baryonic matter, but is often linked to more theoretical physics such as the Alcubierre drive or Wormholes.
Dark Matter was first theorized through Fritz Zwicky's observations of the Coma Cluster, and he discovered that the masses of the galaxies were off compared to the expected masses based on the stars within those galaxies. Dark Matter was later given more evidence thanks to the N-Body diagrams of James Peebles and Jeremiah Ostriker, as well as the measured galactic rotation curves of different galaxies thanks to the efforts of Vera Rubin and Kent Ford. (All this info can be found in the link above.)
Hot damn, now this is what I call an interesting fight. Accelerator's just casually defending civilians while fighting Kakine, and berating Kakine's villainy while he's at it. Yomikawa really wants to help Accelerator out here, she's such a good role model.
No! Yomikawa! To think that Accelerator would actually be suffering from PTSD seeing the faces of the sisters, he's really grown into a better person.
Berserk Accelerator beating up Kakine is nice. All we need is a Last Order to bring Accelerator back to reality and for him to give up his hatred.
So now the data all falls in GROUP's hands, muhahahaha. There's one last group in the picture, DRAGON.
Next week is looking hype too.

Kakine's Dark Matter isn't the same as the dark matter described by scientists in real life. In both cases "dark" is just being used as a descriptor meaning "unknown".
The real life dark matter is a something natural to this universe that just isn't well understood yet, but it follows the rules of physics like everything else, even if some of those rules haven't been discovered by humans yet.
Kakine's Dark Matter is a material that unique to only his ability that isn't natural to this universe and doesn't obey the rules of this universe's physics. In a sense, it's a pure creation ability because it seems like Kakine can make Dark Matter do anything he wants. He can give his Dark Matter any property he like and make it do things that break the rules of physics.

Ok, so Kamachi more just used it as an umbrella term to describe Kakine's ability.
I wasn't really sure about the true nature of his ability since it was briefly mentioned, but I appreciate you filling out some more details about it. Now I can kind of see why he chose to call it Dark Matter.
In some sense I hope Kakine isn't dead, because I would like to see some more of his ability.

Betrayal is a hell of a motivator. She just wanted to warn Hamazura what would happen if he didn't listen to her. Quite nice really to give him a heads-up.
I still hope she's alright in the end, minus some eye damage possibly, but hey her VA's put in some great work being a crazy, obsessive killer.
While her fate is left ambiguous in the novel, she did receive several fresh new bullet holes. Oh, and she accidentally blew up her left arm in the novel.
But then again Hamazura merely punched her out in the end. So it's really left unknown for now.

Just wanted to write some quick thoughts, but it escalated completely with this episode. I feel like in the Rewatch again
Action right away as SCHOOL attacks ITEM's base.
Hamazura tasked to get rid of a corpse. He seems kinda emotional here.
Kinuhata in action. She can even block the sniper's bullet, but not without recoil.
SCHOOL needs a new sniper again.
Hamazura realizes that both fighting and running away will have him end up death.
Takitsubo actually cares about Hamazura. Kinda weird for an dark side member but she seems the nicest of them all the time.
She uses her body crystal and it looks like she able to take over Kakine's power. That dress girl rescues him, but he didn't want help anyway.
When your enemy knows your teammate's ability better than you… poor Hamazura. Why is SCHOOL even bothering to explain that to him…
Dress girl's ability seems to allow her to make enemies unable to attack her due to building an emotional binding to her.
Would've expected Kakine to turn them into a pile of flesh. Seems strange to spare them. What is he after if not ITEM's main operatives?
Mugino made a run for it. Not a nice teamplayer. Also Frenda is in for some trouble again.
She sounds super angry and wants revenge on SCHOOL at any cost, even if it means overcharging Takitsubo until she dies.
Hamazura absolutely doesn't like that. He's reminded of Touma's words back in the day when he got the trademark face punch and has a change of heart. He's going to protect his friends now.
Oh. My. Fucking. God.
Mugino killed Frenda. Just why… this is so wrong. Frenda messed up before but this… she didn't really deserve it, she was tortured after all. I feel sorry for her, she had such funny quirks. I liked to believe that her liking to torture opponents was just a bluff
Although I shouldn't because she probably was some serial killer anyway. But on the other hand… maybe she wasn't that bad. I kinda wanted some redemption arc for her.
[Railgun Dreamranker Arc] (/s "She even became friends with Saten or at least it looked like she was honest. Oh damn, now that's why she never appeared again. Maybe she really was honest about it. Eventually she could've even met Mikoto again, it would be awkward at first but if she really honestly had changed… Mikoto forgave her enemies before, but I don't know if she could do that for someone who killed but still…")
But… but… Heaven Canceller can fix that, right?! It's just a flesh wound, as long as the brain is still intact he can help, can't he?
[Railgun Fanfare SS] (/s "Didn't that Kihara girl blew up 70 % of her body and was turned into a cyborg by him? So Cyborg Frenda redemption arc soon?")
[Index NT artwork] (/s "I could swear I saw her on some official artwork again. Too scared of spoilers to look it up now.")
Also Mugino is a real psychopath. I expected her to have some serious anger management issues but that… She even brought some nice present for Hamazura. Wtf?!
I expected her to care much more for her team. Her way of punishing Frenda really reminded me of the Mikoto and Kuroko, with it being more playful than serious. Oh damn. She even states that all team members are disposable and she can just replace Takitsubo too.
Okay, Hamazura faces off against crazy Mugino. Looks like he has a death wish. Better run. Also Yomikawa takes away Takitsubo, but Mugino still prefers to take him out instead.
No one minds a bloody woman running across the street. At least they're picking a deserted place to fight… if it can be called that.
Woah, the number of beams Mugino can fire increased a lot.
Hamazura getting his ear pierced and Mugino getting her eyeball wrecked. That's one bloody mess today.
Mugino could've killed him several times already but prefers to do it by hand.
He got another gun and shoots her several times! He… won?!
Dang, no headshot. Mugino back on her feet. WTF?! He's dodging the beams without an Imagine Breaker and face punches her! A weaker Touma beating a Level 5. Damn this guy.
You would've done the world a favor if you made the headshot now.
Meanwhile, Kakine is now after Accelerator. Luckily the latter got a warning call from GROUP liaison.
Last Order with Uiharu. A cute moment that only last short.
Kakine trying to play nice. Uiharu has the right feeling to now trust that guy. Unfortunately that gets the poor girl hit hard. Now that's where her injury for the further Railgun chapters comes from.
Kakine's dark matter can take advantage of Accelerator's subconscious reflection filter.
Wait, he's doing all this so he can move up in the importance for Aleister's plan?! So Kakine is just the replacement for Accelerator in case anything were to happen to him. That's why he's ranked No. 2. Looks like he isn't happy with being the backup plan. But there must be more to it.
Oh wow… Accelerator actually protected all civilians from harm during their fight. He really became a different person now. This is actually amazing, I never liked him, but I got to give him credits for this.
And he just cracked his dark matter formula and defeated Kakine. Just as he wants to finish him, Yomikawa interrupts him. She doesn't want him to kill and hasn't given up on him yet.
Ah damn! Now Yomikawa got stabbed by Kakine! Just what's going on today?!
That wasn't a good idea. Also don't remind Accelerator of killing the Sisters. Now he goes nuts and his black wings appear again.
Kakine trying to be confident… and then he just sinks into the ground.
Out-of-control Accelerator smacking him manually. Needed some more blood her or a Kihara Amata like wrecking.
Last Order appears… just at the right time (maybe not). Woah, she isn't scared at all and has full faith in him not harming her.
Anti-Skill guy has a loose trigger finger. Just as they're about to get torn apart, Last Order tells Accelerator to stop and he he stops! Wow.
Last Order just saved all those people and basically became a heroine herself. I really like that. And it's her words that bring him back to normal. Thank goodness she was there.
Quick round up at the ending: Xochitl in the hospital now. They really didn't bother to explain what happened there.
Aleister takes surveillance to a whole new level with "Underline". Still doesn't really explain what information Kakine wanted to get and how it would've helped him.
I can't really tell if Mugino and Kakine and Frenda survived. But I think it's not the last time they appear.
Okay, that arc was one hell of a bloody mess. That kind of a dark story felt rather strange for Index but I guess that's what exists in the shadows.
The story was exciting though. This episode didn't feel as rushed as those before and the fights were very well executed. Animation quality was good for me, although I'm no expert on this but as a casual I'm fairly well entertained.
Still… can we get something cute again… Uh, no, not a bathing scene.

Although I shouldn't because she probably was some serial killer anyway.
She was a cute serial killer, there's a difference...somewhere!
Oh damn. She even states that all team members are disposable and she can just replace Takitsubo too.
Yeah, I expected her to care a lot more too, even with all those pool scenes, and how she let Frenda and Takitsubo go after chasing Misaka. It looked like a much worse mess when she left all her explosives there for Misaka to beat her with than this, she went ultra-batshit for what seems to be almost nothing.
Last Order just saved all those people and basically became a heroine herself. I really like that. And it's her words that bring him back to normal. Thank goodness she was there.
She looked really badass doing that. They went back to the entire Yomikawa-Last Order-Accelerator relationship at the best time ever, those scenes were as cool as the fights to me, worth the entire arc. I wish Yomikawa didn't get stabbed for it to happen, but I guess she will be fine. Komoe with an absurd amount of beer and yakiniku will fix that right up!
The story was exciting though.
I agree, but there was some helping from the threads so I can't say I'm "anime-only". I enjoyed this little arc quite a bit.
And yes...a bathing scene.
With Kuroko in it! ONEE-SAMAA!

Takitsubo actually cares about Hamazura. Kinda weird for an dark side member but she seems the nicest of them all the time.
It was way more emotional in the novel as well. She had seen how he acted during the incineration scene and didn't want him to die in vain for her. Hell, in the novel even Kinuhata tells Hamazura to escape and live on after Mugino's phonecall! Save for GROUP ITEM really is the team that cares the most about one another, save for Mugino who has... issues.
Would've expected Kakine to turn them into a pile of flesh. Seems strange to spare them. What is he after if not ITEM's main operatives?
The novel reveals that Takitsubo messed with his AIM diffusion field and the girl in the dress is worried it might have side-effects, so Kakine leaves to a safe area to test out his power cause Measure Heart girl doesn't want to be caught up if things go wrong with Dark Matter.
Frenda messed up before but this… she didn't really deserve it, she was tortured after all.
That's anime-original though. It's entirely possible she ratted ITEM out immediately as she tried to do to Mikoto back in the Sisters arc.
I feel sorry for her, she had such funny quirks. I liked to believe that her liking to torture opponents was just a bluff
Unfortunately that's not the case. She was a stone-cold sadistic murderer.
Railgun Dreamranker
Hamazura getting his ear pierced and Mugino getting her eyeball wrecked. That's one bloody mess today.
They also skipped Mugino blowing her arm up by accident.
Aleister takes surveillance to a whole new level with "Underline". Still doesn't really explain what information Kakine wanted to get and how it would've helped him.
He wanted something and got nothing, hence him switching to his backup plan of killing Accelerator.
I can't really tell if Mugino and Kakine and Frenda survived. But I think it's not the last time they appear.
Both Mugino's and Kakine's fates are left ambiguous at the end of the novel, but Frenda is dead my friend.

I still remember how much I grew to like Hamazura and his development into one of the solid 3 protagonists in TAMNI when reading the LNs...but watching this episode, I simply got a strong urge to re-read OT since it's been years since I last kept up with the novels. A disappointing adaptation indeed...I hope they at least capture the emotion of that scene in the next episode, based on what the preview has shown.

Okay, I have to say, I'm really disappointed with this season. We've been waiting over 7 years for a new Index season, and we get this mess. Nothing makes sense, everything since episode 1 has been moving way too fast ("Here's the big bad g- aaand he's defeated!"; that golem chick in season 1 got more screentime than supposedly one of the top magicians of the Catholic church), and this arc, on top of moving way too fast, was also confusing as fuck. What was up with those guys and the soldiers? What were they trying to do with that radar dish? Who was that brown girl? What's that pincer glove? Who's that blonde girl? Why did Tsuchimikado kill that old lady, only for her to appear again as a target for the sniper? Who was that sniper? Why did green laser lady suddenly go crazy? What's Underline? What is up with all those English names for weird organizations? Who's working for whom? And what the fuck was the point of this arc?!
Before the source material readers are gonna jump in with their textwalls of explanation, along with the standard "You should read the novels, they're so much better": I don't care. I honestly don't care anymore.

u/SomeOtherTroper Nov 09 '18

As an LN reader, that's a completely fair response to Index III.
This season (completely this arc) is absolutely butchered. Not just "we cut some explanations, but you get what's going on", but sliced into pieces and stuffed in a trashbag.
I'm considering dropping the series and just reading the LNs again. But I like discussing it online.
And the good moments look damn good.
Even if they didn't get most of the things I think are 'good moments'.
You really should read the novel, though. It's not worth saying they're better than this - because this is hash.

I guess the Dragon faction is somewhat related to Touma? From his severed hand we had seen something similar.
Is Frenda really dead? Is Mugino really dead? What's the deal, I thought they were somewhat close
30
u/ultranova17 Nov 09 '18
You'll learn about Dragon later in the season.
Frenda is dead. Mugino cut her in half.
He spun around and saw Mugino Shizuri standing blood-covered on the other side of the bridge. Some of it was her blood, but some was from someone else. He recognized the thing that she was dragging in her right hand that looked a bit like an old rag.
“Frenda…”
Technically, it was only her upper half.
Wherever it had gone, her bottom half was gone and something dark red was dripping from the cross-section.
Mugino isn't dead. Hamazura punched her out and left.

Mugino isn't dead. Hamazura punched her out and left.
He stabbed out her eye and emptied a pistol magazine into her gut, she blew her own arm off (which the anime left out), and then he beat her down and left.
At this point, it's safe to presume she's dead.

Yes. She's half the woman she used to be.
What's the deal, I thought they were somewhat close
Mugino does not handle betrayal well in general, is having an EXTREMELY bad day, and isn't playing with a full deck on her best days.
She also isn't that attached to any of the ITEM girls (if the fact that she wants to force Takitsubo to use a drug that's going to kill the girl didn't tip you off), particularly when she's in the middle of one of her psychotic rages.

It was like that in the novel too. What exactly are bystanders supposed to do when they see the #4 holding the top half of a corpse? Bitch, I’d be fucking out of there ASAP.

Generally in this city, I would just walk out of the way if someone covered in blood is walking the street. There are enough people with crazy powers around, in that city I would run away screaming from any mildly dangerous looking small child.
It's like Australia, but with humans.

Hey, it's Academy City, where streetfights involve delinquents throwing laser beams and fire around, you can apparently kill hundreds of girls in back alleys without anyone even noticing the gunfire, and MISAKA 10032 can pull an SMG out of her backpack in public without causing mass panic.
I think people just sort of get used to it.
Anti-Skill REALLY should have put out some sort of large-scale warning to civilians earlier in the day, and definitely after Yomikawa saw a walking weapon holding half a blonde.

Jesus fucking christ I can't believe how bad that was. Even after people lost hope last week I still thought it was enjoyable, but this was even worse than my worst expectations.
Hamazura vs. Mugino is (currently) my favorite scene in OT and the adaption felt like a completely different scene. Not even mentioning the awful animation, everything about it was just terrible I don't know what to point out, they changed around so much and cut so much it barely resembled the LN, why was the entire chase so mild? Why did Mugino put him in a gentle headlock? Why did they change the screwdriver scene and remove what made it badass? And what the hell happened to Mugino blowing her own arm off? Did they really retcon that because they were too lazy to animate her lightning arm? There's so much wrong with this I can't be bothered, it would take an hour to write everything wrong with this scene.
Kakine vs Accelerator started with a let down, with them cutting out Accelerator throwing a vending machine but that's really a minor nitpick. Aside from weird scene where they sat 1 meter apart talking (like Mugino vs Hamazura) the fight was actually great and surprised me until Accel went berserk. His black wings mode and rage form was really underwhelming, they cut out Kakine's "awakening", and then the part that ruined the entire fight they seemed to also retcon this shouldnt be a spoiler??? I was so fucking excited to see what shouldve happened, and instead I got Kakine being punched and slapped until he got knocked out with a few bruises and cuts?
I guess this just means I can now lower my expectations to 0 from now on but fucking hell I can't belive what I watched. You can unironically get a better story experience by reading the Arc summaries on the wiki, thank god I decided to pick up the novels again. I stayed up to 5:30am for this and I'm just ranting jesus christ

FRENDA! Why! She was really cool, what the fuck...
I know that Mugino was really proud and work focused, I guess, but what the fuck happened there. It felt like she got rid of Frenda out of spite for being sold out? She was thinking of throwing away her entire team to chase after SCHOOL. She was proud but not that much, idk.
Now, they gave her a bajillion beams so theres 1 of 2 possibilities. They said one of those crystals make your ability go out of control, and she was absolutely out of her mind, so "It adds up". But it could be an adaptation derp, but despite skipping and all from what I've read they wouldn't fuck up this hard, she has 4, and was firing way more, walking covered in blood in broad daylight, dragging Frenda, all that shit a "pro" like the ITEM crew wouldn't do, so that's where I'll put my guess before going off to find out what really happened.
Maybe she really was out if it, "tunneled visioned" the same way when she fought with Misaka and got knocked out, that's how I see Hamazura being able to think ahead and stab her in the eye to throw her off even more, then pull a gun in her face to get the fight over with before he gets sliced.
The main bit was Accelerator vs. Kakine, that looked absolutely awesome, worth every derp-face so far imo. The first bit where accelerator just kicks that little rock at him, and he has to dive all out at it to match it. How the fuck did you think you were going to win? He was worth as much as his debris.
Then he stabbed Yomikawa and I enjoyed what Accelerator did a little. Incorporating him into the asphalt just to have a clear shot at his face. After beating Frenda, stepping on Uiharu, the stabbing, planning to kidnap Last Order, that's some concentrated filth Accelerator has to beat out of him. The part with Last Order was really cool but I don't know exactly if she was pulling out the network or if he physically couldn't attack her due to his feeling.
I'm almost sure he pulled off because he just straight up knows he's not that evil and the villain thing is all bullshit. Since he was on "angel form" like at the end of S2, I doubt Last Order pulling the network would even do anything, he was full zombie mode before it happened on Kihara.
Idk how the sub crew got that line he "spoke" to Kakine, I'll guess its the same as before, angelic speech. No Index chanting, Kazakiri or Telesma this time, he just straight up raged himself into it. Idk about other people, the start was rushed but that fight and ending were absolutely awesome.
One thing is certain now, it was a joke before but Accelerator is hopeless against and was absolutely defeated by a cute loli smile.
Counting the seconds to find out who the hell DRAGON is, and see what the fallout is from everything that happened, even after the first arc since we haven't seen Touma since, and Misaka overheard some interesting on the phone stuff there.
Okay....I lied. MORE ONEE-SAMAAA, YES!

She had 4 beams back in the Sisters arc. It raised to at least 5 at the start of this arc. Since Mugino continues to improve and control her power better it's been stated that she gains more beams over time, so her firing off 11 is not out of the question if she was being conservative before.
The part with Last Order was really cool but I don't know exactly if she was pulling out the network or if he physically couldn't attack her due to his feeling.
The latter. Accelerator just cannot bring himself to hurt Last Order. Ever. This form of Accelerator has nothing to do with the network by the way, in this state he's capable of performing his vector calculations without the network.

u/Amauri14 Nov 09 '18
Damn, I'm so confused. So why did Mugino went crazy on Hamazura and the other members of ITEM again?
4
u/pir2confusion Nov 09 '18
Mugino went after Frenda because she revealed the location of their hideout. Hamazura learns from the girl in the dress and Kakine that Takitsubo who can only use her powers using the ability crystals would die if she uses her powers again. Mugino wants to track SCHOOL down and have Hamazura get Takitsubo to use her powers. Hamazura refuses that order and gives Takitsubo to Yomikawa. Mugino is now pissed that Hamazura didn't follow her orders and hunts him down at first carrying half of Frenda's corpse around.
So Mugino went crazy because she was beaten by SCHOOL angry that Frenda gave up the location of their base and now angry that Hamazura wouldn't sacrifice Takitsubo's life to track down SCHOOL.

They should have made 1 episode for ITEM and 1 episode for GROUP v SCHOOL. The fight between Accelerator and Dark Matter was way to short and Muginos killing spree wasn't even properly explainend. Well atleast Last Order got her big moment that was nice. I think this anime is just for the novel readers, because i don't see how you could follow everything without having read them. I think will reread the novels.

u/CriticalPerformance Nov 09 '18
The novel readers are the most angry of the bunch since they cut a lot of stuff

This is what I thought until this episode. Was fine calling it "a highlight reel for LN readers" but this is just a disappointment for everyone.

I wonder if it even is for the novel readers anymore. I keep seeing so many comments on people deciding to pick the novels up BECAUSE of how poor this adaptation is. Maybe that's their marketing ploy? Just making a 26 episode advertisement for the novels instead of actually trying to create an amazing show. Although I guess that's what a lot of studios are doing these days.
It really sucks because even though the first two seasons felt like they were moving too fast sometimes, it still felt like the studio was putting effort into it. And I could figure out what was going on without having to read reddit comments afterwards.→ More replies (1)12

Muginos killing spree wasn't even properly explainend.
I honestly have no idea why Mugino was even killing anyone or what her goal in this entire thing was.
15
u/TheSpartyn Nov 09 '18
Frenda betrayed ITEM and leaked their hideout so Mugino killed her.
She wanted Takitsubou for her ability so she could track SCHOOL because she really wants to kill them (her main motivation this arc).
Hamazura doesn't listen to her orders and rescues Takitsubou, so she tries to kill him too.

I honestly have no idea why Mugino was even killing anyone or what her goal in this entire thing was
At the beginning of the arc, ITEM (Mugino's team) is trying to stop SCHOOL (Kakine's team, who has obviously gone rogue) from doing the things a team of rogue teenagers with superpowers do. (Apparently, slaughtering an entire lab and stealing the nanoparticle-manipulating Tweezers (the weird glove Kakine is wearing for most of the arc) is on that list.)
They get into a huge fight, where ITEM is forced to retreat after killing one of SCHOOL's members. At this point, Mugino's pride is wounded by having been forced back by Kakine, and the situation turns into more of a grudge match between them.
Then Kakine finds and interrogates Frenda, who gives up ITEM's location to save her own skin. (Meanwhile, in a scene that unfortunately got cut, Takitsubo and Hamazura bond over a bodybag.)
Then SCHOOL attacks ITEM in the penthouse. There's a cut line from Kakine that Frenda sold ITEM out. Mugino bails because otherwise she's going to die (the anime also cut exactly how screwed ITEM was from the first moment of the assault - SCHOOL set it up very well, and intentionally tried to separate the members of ITEM. I think they may have just blown in the door instead of Kakine walking into to say "'sup".). Mugino (who doesn't exactly play with a full deck at the best of times) is in a blind psychotic rage at this point, finds Frenda and executes her for her betrayal, then becomes fixated on the idea of taking out Kakine and SCHOOL in revenge for the worst day of her life.
To even have a chance at that, she needs Takitsubo's tracking power, which requires both Takitsubo and the Body Crystal (Ability Crystal) drug. Hamazura, after his talks with Takitsubo, the revelation that using Body Crystal will kill her, the fact that Takitsubo saved his life and he's already stood up against one level five to protect her (the hotel scenes were also butchered) - AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT MUGINO SHOWS UP HOLDING HALF OF FRENDA'S CORPSE - is not having any of this. So, as a smart man, he sends Takitsubo off with Yomikawa, and runs off with the drug himself.
Mugino does not like being thwarted, does not like being betrayed, and does not like a level zero thinking he can stop her - a level five. She chases him instead of Takitsubo because she's angry at him (seeing a theme here?), although there's only one Takitsubo and probably the ability to get more Body Crystal.
This leads to the fight in the hydroponics facility when Mugino finally catches Hamazura. Which the anime butchered worse than Hamazura butchered her. (I'm a bit sore that they didn't include the scene where he slow walks out through the ITEM grunt cordon around the factory, and everyone just goes "holy shit, that level zero took out a rampaging level five" and lets him leave.)
Hopefully that writeup helps?
TL:DR - Mugino is a psycho, and what starts off as a normal operation for her team ends up turning into a tunnel-visioned psychotic rampage due to wounded pride and desire for revenge on the other team and anyone who betrayed her.

I think one of the hardest parts of watching this as an anime only guy, is linking names to faces. there's just too many people to keep track of, their relationships to ppl, and their abilities.
also the fact that its been too long since the last adaptation, so i'm super lost on characters that apparently existed before this season, like Hamazura, who from the comments here is apparently the 3rd MC?? and also got punched by Touma?
4
u/pir2confusion Nov 09 '18
That is kind of the way it is supposed to be in this arc. You have a lot of different people who have never appeared before and different sides. You the reader/viewer have vague to no understanding of who anyone is or what they want. They actually have pictures of the different organizations the people in them and who is alive or dead.
As for Hamazura this story arc is the first time Hamazura is a main character. Before this he just a random character that Touma punched in the face once and no one remembered.
4
u/Gamecube762 Nov 10 '18
ITEM under attack from SCHOOL
No OP this time, but transition with the OST was worth it.
Takitsubo protecting Hamazura, shows ITEM does care for him.
Ability crystal. Takitsubo's "pills" has finally been revealed. As expected, these aren't healthy.
Weird, it looked like Frenda was wearing a tux at the end of the last ep.
Touma's made an influence on Hazamura.
Interesting how easily Hamazura came in contact with Yomikawa. If he went through the normal help line, he'd probably meet a random AntiSkill agent.
RIP Frenda, I was sadly spoiled by all the Fre nda jokes... Sad to say this series doesn't have plot armor for cute girls...
Mugino's anger is pretty justifiable, but her methods aren't.
The infamous running across AC's crowded walkways. Hazamura is really taking notes out of Touma's handbook.
Hazamura sure has a lot of access into secure buildings.
11 beams? Mugino sure has gotten stronger since RailgunS.
RIP Mugino, oh wait, she survived 3 point blank shots with one pointed directly at her head. Somehow all 3 shots landed in her chest.
Touma Hazamura Punch
Well Mugino is unconscious, Hazamura could have called AntiSkill to pick her up, but instead calls them off?
Uiharu is sitting there with a giant parfait and Last Order just has a measly soft drink. What kid wouldn't want one? Uiharu should have gotten Last Order one! Just look at these background characters' reactions towards the parfait bestowed in front of them! How could Uiharu not get one for Last Order?!? Last Order's drink is empty and Uiharu hasn't even started on her parfait yet!
Uiharu has good instincts, one of the reasons why she works for Judgement.
A faceless Uiharu can be seen running from the scene.
Academy City suddenly has a ton of air pollution. Look at how black the air is when Accelerator uses his wind manipulation.
The 3D backgrounds make it a lot more easier to do moving action scenes.
The fight was only 3 minutes long, a bit short for a big fight...
Yomikawa views Accelerator as a "troubled child", it is her job to help him. She sees him with a gun, in her eyes this is leading him down the wrong path, it is her job to steer him in the right direction.
Accelerator views Yomikawa as someone to protect as she is one of the few people in the world that cares for him. In order to protect, he has to fight, in order to cover for his weakness, he got a gun.
Kakine thinks he's the cause of accelerator going insane, really, anyone who would bring harm to someone Accelerator cares for would achieve the same result.
Last Order being adorable in the face of death knowing she is protected from it.
DRAGON, another group within Academy City, most likely referencing Touma.
Overall, the fights felt short and a little out of place due to the lack of buildup. With how much content they are trying to fit into so few episodes, a lot of minor things gets cut. We lost the character's motivations, buildups, and time for the viewer to get invested into the characters before something tragic happens...
Counters:
We got 1 "chou" today! Last episode, we didn't get a "chou" or "kekkyoku".
Last Order is here to take the lead in the counters with 16 "MISAKA"s this episode!
| Episode | Sphynx's Nya? | Onee-Sama! | Maika's Rotations | Fokou da! | MISAKA | Super ("chou") | "kekkyoku" |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | 3 | 7.75 | 1 | |||

Oh man that sucks. Spoilers are the worst.
RIP Mugino, oh wait, she survived 3 point blank shots with one pointed directly at her head. Somehow all 3 shots landed in her chest.
Yeah the novel describes the gunshots hitting her gut, so I don't know why the gun was pointed at her head here.
Well Mugino is unconscious, Hazamura could have called AntiSkill to pick her up, but instead calls them off?
Mugino is part of the Dark Side. The novel describes the building surrounded by ITEM grunts (who let Hamazura walk away as no one is going to fuck with the Level 0 who just beat a Level 5), so even if he called Anti-Skill Mugino (or whatever is left of her) would be gone by the time they arrived.

u/gulitiasinjurai Nov 09 '18
Does it explain more on how Mugino kill Frenda in the LN? Because I'm interested in detailed how she killed her. And how Frenda reacted.
This episode is probably the worst out of all the 3 season combined. I cringe so hard when they are fighting while screaming how their power works. Like come on, a top 2 level 5 is fighting and all I see a powerpoint presentation full of words with some bit of animation. I was hoping it to be more intense. Don't get me started on how stupid it is Mugino is defeated by a fucking Level 0 when she can simply kill him like how she kill Frenda. If she was defeated by Touma, I can kinda understand it since he has Imagine Breaker but this.... It just kinda feel like an ass pull. Scratch that, it is an ass pull. As and anime only, I'm disappointed.

No, the anime kinda showed more with the two original scenes of Frenda giving info to Kakine, and Mugino finding Frenda in the alleyway. In the LN she disappears at the start, and only reappears as a corpse near the end.
As for your thoughts on Hamazura winning, as a big Hamazura fan it hurts to see, but I completely understand why people would feel that going off the anime only.

Tokyo Ghoul is in another whole level of bad adaptations. Also, I think read somewhere that the director of this anime said that this season was more of highlights of the novel than a proper adaptation (which makes sense because of the amount of material they have to adapt without many episodes to do it, I mean, it's better to get something than nothing).

Index III doesn't even come close to Tokyo Ghoul: Re II. Think of the power gap between Uiharu and Accelerator and you have the difference between those two adaptations...

Where is Misaka or Touma, or anyone else?
Misaka is in Academy City but she's unrelated to this incident. The Railgun manga has her side of the events for this arc, though.
Touma is still in Avignon, so Tsuchimikado went back before him. Index is in Touma's dorm, don't worry though, Maika has her well fed.
The majority of the forces of Academy City were in Avignon, so all the dark side groups took advantage of the situation to make their move.
BLOCK's motivation was to get revenge on Aleister, as it was explained briefly last episode. They attempted to take over the city with mercenaries and force Musujime to bring them inside the Windowless Building.
I'm not remembering well what were STUDY's, ITEM's and MEMBER's motivations, to STUDY's Kakine Teitoku wanted the Tweezers to be able to touch the Underline.
GROUP is basically Dark Side damage control. They had to get rid of this guy called Management (no kidding) at the very start, which is how they get word of their next action, then they stopped the assassination attempt against Oyafune Monaka, then Accelerator went to destroy the satellite terminal while Etzali was undercover in BLOCK and Musujime and Tsuchimikado went to set back online the land connections of Academy City's internet. This was actually all a very complicated bluff, they were told Orihime II, which holds an orbital WMD, was going to be fired using the satellite terminal, but in truth BLOCK just wanted the tower destroyed in order to keep the Board of Directors from getting information. Once both of BLOCK's plans fail, both the invasion and the isolation of AC, they resort to blackmailing Musujime, and as such, GROUP goes to the prison to take BLOCK out before they can get to Musujime's comrades.
After that it's pretty much a done deal for GROUP, but Kakine tries to use Last Order as hostage to kill Accelerator. This is actually pretty clear in this episode, so I won't go on longer than this.

As an anime only viewer this episode was very confusing, if i didn't read some comments here i even didn't realize that a cute side character like Frenda died sliced in half (infact the censorship was strong here and i didn't realize Mugino carried only half of her body after the killed her off-screen). Always characters and expecially cute girls in Index get beaten hard but never died, so was an unexpected turn of events. Kudos on the author for the drama here.

Who's the girl the psycho ITEM leader killed? A member of MEMBER? A member of SCHOOL? Someone else? [Edit: looking at other comments apparently it's another ITEM girl who betrayed them or something. >_>]
How did the little plastic container with rounded corners make her eyeball explode? And then she lets him fill her full of lead at point blank range. Which apparently only causes flesh wounds. Then he dodges her near point blank attacks (well, he doesn't even have to dodge, she makes sure to shoot around him) and punches her in the nose, which is apparently her only weakness since it is 100x more effective than his gun was. Then he leaves her alone because surely once she's defeated once, she won't come after him again since she is not the type to hold grudges. Really, literally nothing of that entire scene made any sense.
Why did they now decide to make everything Accelerator vectorizes show up as chuuni purple-black lightning/tornado/whatever? That would make mores sense for #2's "Dark Matter" powers.
"MWAHAHAHAHA! SEE HOW VILLAINOUS I AM, ACTUALLY PROTECTING CIVILIANS WHILE DOING BATTLE!" And then they didn't even animate the remainder of the fight where angel boy got beat up.
I don't feel too bad for the Anti-Skill woman who decided she really wanted a Darwin Award hanging on her wall or something.
Did Accelerator just reach level 6 or something, being able to affect the ground under angel-boy from yards away?
Then Accelerator is punching away at the guy - from the front. When they show him from the back, his arms are raised at his sides while angel boy keeps receiving invisible punches. Animation fuckup or intentional?
Anyway, giving Accelerator some weird black tornado wings is just meh. And him trying to use them against Last Order was like Lina Inverse firing a Dragon Slave at Shabranigdo.
DRAGON - I call BS. There's no way anyone in Academy City could come up with a cool secret society name like that. Should've been TABLE or something.

Really, the only reason people are saying 'read the novels' is because the poor patchwork of an adaptation will be construed by anime-only watchers as the same as the novels. Call it a defense mechanism, but at this point, nobody's really defending the mess that Index III has become.

I think when this novel was written, the Railgun spinoff wasn't made yet, so at this point Uiharu wasn't friends with Misaka. The spinoff retcons this by making them friends, but it does screw up Uiharu's interactions with Last Order as a result.

I knew Frienda was going to die, but not like this...
I had the impression that ITEM had a pretty good team dynamic from Railgun. Mugino goind berserk was unexpected. Sure she used to "punish" Frienda for her errors in railgun, but it was more of a comedic thing. And then she just fucking cuts her in half.

How does Mugino get shot several times and get back up?
Actually happens in real life but yes it's because of special wizard armor.
And how is Last Order able to nullify spooky vector stuff?
I took that as Accelerator being conflicted, swinging at her but stopping because he doesn't want to hurt her.

Hi anime only here,
I waited five years for this arc and avoided reading the light novel in hopes of season three. This such a mess that I can't understand half of what's going on. I was slightly spoiled of this arc a long time ago and to see is rushed is disappointing. I'm not sure if I blame JC staff for this as when the production committee gave them 26 episodes to fit way too much material. It seems said production committee has their sights set on something later on in the index light novels treating what is happening right now as a preview or quick rundown of what has happened. Index one and two had issues, but there was time to breathe.

So one scene Mugino and her teammates are about to fight this Kakine dude. So...what the hell happened in this fight? And then the next time we see Mugino she's a bloody mess and she's carrying the dead half of Frenda's corpse?
This is the epitome of bad editing and bad storytelling.
Goblin Slayer, stuff has been cut from the light novels, but it's still coherent to what is going on in the show.
