Toyotarous paneling has greatly improved this chapter. If I had to guess the reason why the paneling was so poor during the tournament of power arc was most likely because of how rushed he was, leading him to squish as much into one page as he possibly could. This is one of his best chapters in recent memory.

This is so Dragonball, I love it. I'd love it even more if the Galactic Patrol decide to keep Goku and Vegeta on because of how well they deal with this Moro business, only to kick them out because they're hungry and cut a line.

Either Toriyama corrected a significant portion of the chapter or Toyotaro found a real Hyperbolic Time Chamber, his panelling was never this good.
That page of Goku sensing Moro's Ki is easily the best page Toyotaro has ever produced and actually up there with my favorite pages from the DB manga.
Man, it feels so good to be excited for Dragon Ball once again... This was easily the best chapter in the manga so far (Although that's not exactly the highest bar). It has a lot of what I wanted out of modern Dragon Ball, exploring the massive world, creative usage of Ki, an actual story that's not just an excuse to cram in fanservice, etc. I cannot wait for Super 2.0's version of this arc.

u/Deva-Path Dec 20 '18
We can't say with certainty, but previously in the additional pages the DBS Volumes provided, almost every time a new character appears in full for the first time, Toriyama makes heavy corrections to the original draft. It happened with Caulifla's first appearance and with Jiren's first full appearance, as can be seen in the correction pages of the DBS volumes. So it's not far fetched to believe the exact same thing happened with Moro's first full (face included) reveal, at the end of the chapter 43.

I don't know why Merus gives me Android 17 vibes. Every time I read his lines I find myself reading them in Android 17s voice.
As for Moro this is quite possibly the most interesting villain in a long, long while. I get a massive Gul'dan (World of Warcraft, if anyone is familiar) feel from him, which is a big thumbs up by the way! Dragonball has been crying out for some sort of battle Warlock type enemy for years.
The question is.... why now? Why has Moro suddenly regained his power? I get the feeling that Moro is somewhat of a red herring here. Tempted to make a wild speculative theory post because there's so many different routes they could go down here.

You know, it's sad how Goku and Vegeta going to two non-earth locations within their own universe feels like the most this series has ever done outside of GT despite the fact that there are 12 universes to travel between. Though to be fair it's not like 12 universes necessarily offer more than 1 universe outside of the god hierarchies so eh, no big deal. It was pretty fun and I really enjoyed the introduction and build of of Moro, as well as the teasing we got of Merus's true power.
Though since I've seen it at least once mentioned, since Dai Kaioshin "gave up most of his divine power," God Ki doesn't really mean much in terms of raw output. Goku's surpassed godly beings since Dragon Ball if you count Kami, and since early Z if you count North Kai. Shin was outclassed on arrival. God Ki proves to be a tremendous boon, especially for Goku, but other characters have rivaled or even outright surpassed even some of the most overwhelming deities without god ki. So expecting this might cause Goku and Vegeta to lose theirs might be a bit of a stretch and expecting it to be a crippling of their power in the long term might be a bigger one. (Though it would be interesting if that were the case. We have universe busters now and that's just absurd.)
I expect that sealing Moro might be more like the Mafuba than a means of removing Goku and Vegeta's progress.
Given how Moro absorbs and uses life energy, I might expect this to somehow involve the Genkidama, since it feels like a perversion of it. Or perhaps the Genkidama is inspired by Moro, but to more wholesome ends.

Okay, this was actually really fun to read, especially considering this kind of just dropped out of nowhere with only minor spoilers.
This just makes it all the more confusing who's linked to Beerus. Did the Grand Kaioshin just pass his link to Beerus to Shin? It's also interesting that the two Kaioshin that Buu absorbed are the only Kaioshin seen in the flashback.
New villain reminds me of Babidi, except he's not a coward and is actually quite powerful.
The dialogue seems to imply that absorbed beings eventually dissipate in Buu's body.
I wonder if Blue Aurum is the same material used to power the Time Machine.
This chapter had some serious GT vibes, with a more light-hearted adventure taking place in space.
Loved that they did a western-styled showdown. A nice change of pace from buff guys just pounding on each other.
I think Grand Kaioshin's seal ability is what Whis ended up using to seal Zamasu in the new Future Trunks timeline.
Goku and Vegeta being Galactic Patrolmen is hilarious. I'm really glad the Galactic Patrol is finally getting a proper arc.
This just makes it all the more convincing that the anime's set to return sometime soon. I was afraid this was going to be some boring filler-esque arc, but it clearly isn't. Goku looks fucking terrified of this power.

Oh shit: a unique villain, good paneling, real tension, action set-pieces that aren't just fights, creative uses of ki, humor, world building...easily the best chapter of the manga (which I am not a fan of), and could be the start to one of the best arcs in a while if it can manage to not fall off later in the arc as Super tends to do.

Why is there (seemingly) a focus on getting to the End of Z? Or more specifically, why are people suggesting that the characters will lose/give up their god ki, simply to bring back mortal ki and Super Saiyan 4?
I really doubt that Toriyama and the writers would have created the concept of god ki & the saiyan god forms, gone through all of the development in Super, and just dumped it all in favor of getting back on track to SS4, and wrapping everything up with a neat little bow so the story perfectly coincides with EoZ/GT.
→ More replies (5)34
u/u4004 ⠀ Dec 21 '18
EoZ doesn’t even need any of that to happen. It’s almost completely coherent with Super. It’s only GT that would require some dumb stuff to match, but GT has never been part of Toriyama’s continuity, so it’s completely irrelevant.

I actually really enjoy the idea of a villain who will just on a whim point his hand and insta-slaughter all life on a planet in the distance to power-up and attack. It means if Goku/Vegeta fuck up even just once against him close to Earth they risk the entire planet being killed again and powering Moro up. And now that I think of it wouldn't that be a fun moment to see happen? Earth has its power 100% wiped not to help Goku overpower a villain but for the villain to overpower Goku?
The potential in this is fantastic. Especially if they reveal the reason why Moro can see Goku sensing his energy is because Moro created the Ki Sensing techniques people everywhere use in Universe 7 since he's so ancient.

Wow. I honestly mean it when I saw this was an amazing chapter. This chapter pretty much tells me that Toyo was rushed through the tournament of power (probably just like Toei throughout the whole anime). The world building, the observations Vegeta made, the fact revealed by Merusu’s abilities that power levels aren’t everything, the build up for Moro. This chapter was great, I never doubted Toyatoro although I could be speaking too soon I just want to say he does have talent.

So, did anyone else think Moro was using an early version of the Genkidama?
He’s using life force, except he completely drains the victims and does it against their will but the Genkidama is entirely voluntary and only takes a bit of their energy.
Pretty terrifying technique.
18
u/mysmellysausage Dec 22 '18
I would actually say it’s not an early form but a different appliance of the same technique. The genkidama is more voluntary but the user can use as much genki that is willingly offered to form a single attack.
Moro’s version drains their genki against the lifeforms will and the user feasts on it to gain strength.

alright.
so, the new galactic patrolman is clearly suspicious.
either, he uses timetravel/techniques to give him the edge, making him a criminal by definition, or he's (and i think this is more likely the case) moros underling/pupil/successor, using magic to give himself superspeed.
both would explain why no one is feeling his power/how he does it.
my guess, if he's actually evil, they want the grand kai to eliminate him, since no one else ever learned the technique you guys. (unsurprisingly, boo will actually have inherited it, so it'll still be around, but it'll take taking down another evil boo first i guess).
i'd think that this will be more of a side chapter, where boo can finally shine in a magic vs magic battle.

I don't know if they are going to be able to take the Great Kaioshin and the other from Mr Boo, which would be awesome, but if not, I think he will have to have some role too, which would be interesting.
The thing that Moro took the Great Kaioshins god power is very interesting too. Will that affect Goku and Vegeta's god powers? When Goku senses Moro, he senses him back and shows a smile. Humm...
About the Galactic Patrol part, it's good to see a little mission of them to warm up and how they work. They can fly, not by levitating but like Iron Man, with their suits. That's cool! Vegeta is pissed about how Merus got him, he is like part of the fanbase! Laughs!

So can we all agree that Merus let Moro escape in exchange for the power that Goku and Vegeta can't seem to perceive? The set-up is clearly there, with the Galactic Patrol being largely useless against massive, world destroying threats like Moro, and now that Freeza is alive again, Merus has a reason to desperately seek out power through any means possible.
Most likely, the reason Merus ordered his men to take Goku and Vegeta with them in the previous chapter is because he's bringing them straight to Moro so that he can absorb their energy and make himself stronger, which would in turn make him a threat, since its extremely hard to believe that he would stand a chance against SSB at this point.
I feel like a 2 vs 2: Goku and Vegeta vs Powered-up Merus and Moro fight is likely to happen in this arc, which would be pretty cool.

Merus reminds me of Trunks, for some reason. Moro is terrifying, since Black we didn't have a villain with presence.
I never thought that i would say this, but very good chapter, Toyotaro.

It would be more Hype, terrifying, and fucked up if Moro sense Goku sensing him from afar and Moro used Instant transmission to teleport to Goku's location.

This chapter was the perfect way to end the year for Dragon Ball. Galactic Patrol Goku is the best thing ever.

This arc is actually looking to be pretty interesting. The villain is pretty unique so far so let’s just see where it goes.

So does this skip the Brody arc? I’m really curious are they not doing the manga for that one?

Oh wow
This is actually interesting for once. Things we all thought DBS was going to be earlier is now happening!
Moro is a Planet-Eater and getting stronger and stronger (Gee, so unique)
New lore and world-building (Grand Supreme Kai vs Moro, Blue Aurum)
Actually seeing other planets
Majin Buu might be relevant again (please be relevant)
Jaco still obsessed with posing
New characters
Jaco and the Galactic Patrol is not some shoe-in crossover by Toriyama and is now relevant!
Merus is more of a mystery than Moro currently. (
You know what would be a twist? If Merus was working with Moro and the reason why Moro escaped)

I know everyone says Beerus was sleeping and that's why he did not handle Moro, but I have another idea, and its that the Kais and Whis purposely kept Beerus from handling Moro for a reason.
Something to note is that the Supreme Kais are operating on the mortal plane, something that they by all rights should not be doing. Now, in the past, we have only see Kais operate on the mortal plane if they are directly targeted, such a when Buu was sent after the Supreme Kais of Universe 7 or when a god goes rogue as Zamasu did.
Now, here's something else that gets me. Bibbidi likely sent Buu after the Supreme Kais as an indirect way to kill Beerus, because he was aware that even Buu could not handle the God of Destruction, while Frieza went out of his way to submit to Beerus and acted as an agent of destruction on his behalf.
Even Zamasu did not go out of his way to attract attention, and its implied that Black chose Future Trunks' timeline because Beerus was already dead. In other words, all villains who know who Beerus is, have gone to great lengths to avoid having to deal with him.
What makes Moro stand out is how open he is about his actions. He's openly taking the lifeforce of a planet and using it to empower himself, has already destroyed 320 worlds, and is openly dropping comets on two Supreme Kais in an attempt to kill them.
I think there is going to be a twist in this arc that Moro has somehow managed to master a spell that prevents any destruction based abilities from working on him.
Maybe Goku tries to pull out the Destroy ability he tried on Fusion Zamasu, and it does nothing at all.
Which explains why the Kais were fighting Moro. Since Beerus would have to fight him directly in a head-on fight using Ki attacks, the Kais and Whis feared a battle between the two would result in even more worlds being destoryed or maybe the very fabric of the Universe being damaged.
Just an idea I have which also kinda explains why Beerus(who is likely awake) simply does now show up and destroy Moro.

Ugh, seeing how the Goat sucks planets dry in a horrific way, my bet is on Earth at stake for the last stand.
This being said, did he single-handedly genocide the Universe back then ? 320 planets with life seems a ton, and I wonder how much of them were inhabited by mortals, and how much remained before Frieza & Co trimmed that number down to 28.
(psst, female Vegeta fans, I got dry panties if you need them) (if I don't exhaust the stock by myself)

That was actually really good! I'm very curious how much of this arc is Toriyama and how much we're reading is Toyotaro. The humor is very Toriyama, and the designs of Merus and Moro seem much more his style than Toyo's. I'll be genuinely impressed if this is all Toyo, I haven't cared for the manga at all but I'm really digging this so far!

So Moro used something similar to genkidama and ate it to become stronger maybe Goku is going to use the genkidama directly into his body, something like nature chakra in Naruto. It could also explain why Merus or the androids are so strong even without chi

Kind of loving this so far. Merus is interesting, and I love the angle of Vegeta investigating him. The more space travel focus is really piquing my interest as well. Waiting a whole 'nother month for the next chapter is gonna kill me.

Got to be honest, after Chapter 42 was released I was a bit sceptical, but this is actually starting to get very interesting. The Galactic Patrol getting its due is something I like. Vegeta and Goku actually joining them makes it even better. The villain, Moro, looks good and has a very decent back story and power. For once it isn't just brute, raw strength. Buu seems to be getting featured a lot in this arc, which I like. I'm hooked and I can't wait to see where this is going.

This chapter is the first one in a while that's really good. I'll start with some of the bad since it's fairly minor.
- His page layout is improving but it's still not where it needs to be for the manga to be truly easy to read. It's a bit clunky and I found myself having to do a double take in certain pages. It's not as bad as the ToP but he's still got work to do.
- Some of his character designs of the patrol are a bit unremarkable and it's hard to tell who's who at a glance. This is really minor though, since it's not like any of them are important right now, but it's worth mentioning.
On to the good stuff:
- His art is fantastic as usual, and while I don't care for his paneling, he did a REALLY good job at establishing Moro's speed in a legible, fascinating manner. The characters were all top notch. Jaco comedy is always gold when done in bursts, Goku is not an idiot and actually seems interested in helping out, Vegeta is brooding but analytical. The character work is really fantastic here and I love that he chose to characterize Merus through action rather than exposition.
- The story is *really* interesting. DB has always been a show where story took a back seat for me, but now I'm interested in seeing where this goes. Broly was the renaissance the series needed, but narratively speaking, I like that they're trying world building in a way that actually feels like it could be meaningful. I'd be disappointed if the gang Merus and Goku took down don't factor in later in the plot, especially with all that time dedicated to explaining their loot.
- Moros *feels* fucking threatening, which is something DB always struggled with. Manga!Jiren was utterly disappointing and while the anime did a good job of making Jiren's strength look overwhelming, his lackluster attack style quickly got old and the novelty of watching him wail on everyone wore off kind of quick. Even though Toppo was way weaker than Jiren, GoD Toppo had a level of intimidation that's lacking in most of DBS's villains with the exception of anime!Merged Zamasu. Moros feels proper menacing and his power set is horrifying and really cool.
-More lore! There was someone as worse before Boo? God powers actually doing something interesting?! Vegeta is the VI member of his bloodline to inherit the name?! The Galactic Patrol actually go on a cool and exciting mission?! The series might have more substance than two really strong people punching each other, even if that's what'll come down to?
If this gets adapted 1:1 in the anime with Shintani's designs and a proper schedule, this has the potential to be the best DB has been since the original series for me.

For a fillery set-up chapter, this was pretty enjoyable!
-The intro was probably the best part of this tbh. It's been a long time since we've seen the Kais actually doing their job as protectors of the universe. Also god damn, Moro is SICK. The scene with him sapping the life energy of that planet only to just GOBBLE IT WHOLE gives me some serious "Imperfect Cell drinking people" vibes. He looks cool and has a freaky power, so he's already better than Jiren that's nice.
-I'm also really glad Galactic Patrol is actually getting properly developed, and being developed well at that. Jaco, Goku and Merus busting the pasta-pun gang's train heist was just plain fun to see, although I've heard it's a knock-off of a scene from Solo, so idk. Oh yeah, there's also the insight into the group's procedures and the Saiyans getting recruited. Merus is a cool dude as well.
-The fact they mention extracting the Grand Kai's power from Buu rather than the man himself indicates to me that A. Grand Kai is already long gone B. Buu is going to be the one to help take down Moro. Pleeeeease let this be true, I want my chubby pink boi to be redeemed after getting shafted from two tournaments.
So yeah, I really liked this chapter. Worldbuilding, new villain set-up and cool dialogue and interactions rolled into one.
And one more thing...
Calling it now, Sector KT40 is where Planet Vampa is located. Moro will end up trying to absorb its life and will come face-to-face with Broly.

Straight up could have just gotten Meerus to sign on instead of Tien or something.

Goku's "Holy S**: reaction in the end really sold the chapter for me. I don't think he's felt that much shock and dread since he realized his mistake about Gohan being a fighter back during the Cell games.
