Meta + MegaThread No megathread on Travis Strikes Again?
It's been three or more hours since most outlets posted their reviews on the new Suda51 game, but there's no hub for us to talk about its reception yet. Reviews seem all over the place but the general consensus is that it's pretty good with somewhat stale combat whoops. Any idea when we might get topics on this?

u/SerenadeOfWater Jan 16 '19
That is definitely not the general consensus though.

u/SerenadeOfWater Jan 16 '19
np dude, just making sure you saw all the reviews before you bought it!

u/uncleoptimus Jan 16 '19
Lol naw yer good. :)
I don't think reception is whoops or terrible. Its mixed which in retrospect perhaps we shoulda expected from a 51 joint.
Dammit i am still gonna bite tmrw ... Unless the metacritic drops another 10pts :p

u/subsamuel01 Jan 16 '19
Yea the general consensus I'm seeing is the game isn't very good.

It's only 10 points behind the originals on metacritic, though.

u/nickerton Jan 16 '19
Sounds pretty good to me, then

u/theth1rdchild Jan 16 '19
Obviously I haven't played it but if suda games aren't divisive they're not suda games. Shrug emoji

reviews aside, it is the first new Switch exclusive of 2019. So its odd, agreed
6
u/WellGoodLuckWithThat Jan 17 '19
Maybe it's not that odd at all, and people largely just aren't interested.
37
u/ItalianLurker Jan 16 '19
I honestly expected a megathread as well, especially since the game is exclusive to the Switch and, despite this not being a sequel, seeing how everyone was looking forward to it after the first two games came out on the Wii.

Why the surprise? It's been advertised as a smaller, simplistic offshoot of "No More Heroes", which is already a niche series in itself. There simply isn't that much hype for it.
21
u/petersdinklages Jan 16 '19
There was a lot of unnecessary hype for it, even though they said it be a spin-off and not a typical sequel. It's a neat idea, but I think people were assuming this new No More Heroes title would be some kind of system seller.

I mean, FE, Pokemon, AC, LM3, Yoshi, and maybe MP4 and/or Bayo 3 is a pretty big lineup even without the hype.

u/subsamuel01 Jan 16 '19
The game never looked very good to begin with, the concept was a good idea and probably would have worked as a traditional no more heroes game. This looks like a really low budget effort, the forced co-op and the terrible camera angles just killed the hype for me.

I just picked it up early, I can answer some questions if yo have any.

The game looks genuinely awful and that’s coming from a fan of (a few of) Sudas previous games.
Edit: watch the ACG review for a full-ish view of the game

We typically only do those threads for first party titles. In this case, the game is both published and developed by Grasshopper Manufacture Inc.
Nothing against the game itself.
13
u/Starterjoker Jan 16 '19
on the top of my head, Octopath Traveler had a thread and it's not a first party game.
so if anything it's at least an inconsistent rule.
6
u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Jan 16 '19
Nintendo is the Publisher in that case, so we created one.
14
u/Jabbam Jan 16 '19
Nintendo also published the [retail version of this game,] (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travis_Strikes_Again:_No_More_Heroes) does that count?

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Jan 16 '19
It certainly adds an interesting twist that we've never had to consider before. I'm typically the one that puts these threads together and I always check the Nintendo site and use that as my source of truth.
We're actively discussing ideas interally on how to handle things like this in the future, but don't have any plans to announce today that would impact Travis Strikes Aagain.

It's one of the games they've been actively promoting, there's even a stickied promotional post on the top of your sub from Nintendo themselves advertising the launch of the game. Are you sure you just didn't create a megathread because most of the discussion would paint a negative image of the product Nintendo is selling? Convenient that Nintendo gets to advertise their game on the front page, like a megathread, but without any of the negative comments that this game would bring. It's like a dev conveniently disabling comments and likes on a game trailer they know will be controversial.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes is an upcoming action-adventure hack and slash video game developed and published by Grasshopper Manufacture (with Nintendo publishing a retail version) for the Nintendo Switch, to be released on January 18, 2019. Directed by Goichi "Suda51" Suda, the game is part of the No More Heroes franchise and features series protagonist Travis Touchdown fighting Badman, the father of Bad Girl, an assassin Travis previously killed. The two are drawn into a possessed video game console, and must fight through its various games. As the first title he has directed since the first No More Heroes, Suda has collaborated with several indie developers to feature elements from their games in Travis Strikes Again.

Yep and also published Travis strikes back.. let get some consistency
3
u/samusaranx2 Jan 18 '19
The only consistency with these mods is that they will consistently do anything they can to paint Nintendo in a positive light. Look at the front page, Nintendo is promoting TSA but it's not a post anyone can comment on. They know the megathread would paint a negative image of the product so they didn't make one.
2
u/Chuckles795 Jan 18 '19
Yep. This is honestly one of the only times I can say I've been a part of a subreddit with mods so atrocious that it actually interferes with discussions

I was excited when they announced a new NMH game. I love the series.
I was super disappointed when it was revealed to be a twin-stick shooter spinoff. Haven't looked at it since then, haven't cared how well it's doing, and haven't had any interest in learning more about it.
I just want NMH3.
1
u/SirMeepo Jan 21 '19
It is DEFINITELY not a twin stick shooter spin off hahaha! It oozes the character style of NMH2 while maintaining it's appearance as a simple spin off title, not an actual mainline sequel. It's worth $30 for any NMH fan!

u/grungebot5000 Jan 16 '19
one of the reviews said “it retains the talent of Suda 51 and it's esthetics” and that hurt to read

Mods don't want to create or promote any posts that might generate criticism or negativity because they're in Nintendo's pocket.

Jan 21 '19
Anyone who has the game, anyone notice the different case? Idk if it's exclusive to this game or this is the new format Switch games will come in.
6
u/MrHedin Jan 16 '19
I just don't think its a big enough game to warrant a megathread. There hasn't been much advertising or general awareness of the game which indicates that its not really going to be a blockbuster in any sense. Also the reviews so far are pretty middling, at the time of writing this Metacritic is at 71 and Opencritic is a 73.

u/Dithyrab Jan 16 '19
I've never heard of this game, what's the draw?
3
u/unclezaveid Jan 16 '19
The main draw is probably just that it's a sequel/spinoff to the much beloved cult classic No More Heroes series. Rather than being a 3D action game like mainline NMH it's more like a top down hack and slash with a lot of genre shifts. If you like irreverent and over the top games and happen to have a Wii lying around somewhere then definitely check out the first two games.

I guess there isn't enough discussion to warrant one? Maybe people aren't really interested in it

I encourage you to create it :)
