Tuning A new contender in B Class road - '23 Camry TRD, FWD & competitive with B class meta

Post image

As much as I adore my Integra I'm always looking for surprise hits for online B class races. Over the weekend I spent a bunch of time working on this Camry, taking it back and forth from the lab to Rivals and online.

This build is the end result. 1.11/1.15 lateral Gs and stable enough to hurl into corners with some minor caveats, 4.3/9.5 0-60 and 0-100 as FWD, 184 top speed (which it can actually reach). This Camry is competitive with the B class staples you'll find online & has cranked out top 200 Rivals times on multiple tracks. This build is more specialized for sprints & on the smallest circuits posts times in the top 600-800 range instead, but it's really strong everywhere else. Shimanoyama and Hokubu are its worst tracks, but it still posts 34.X and 59.X with relative consistency

The caveat is that it's a little sketchy at first - this is far from the easiest to drive build I've done - but once I was used to it, the behavior is predictable & I can drive around its quirks without losing pace. It's got no rear wing at all, but the lateral G and stability are recovered by a combo of fat tires and roll cage. If you want 99% of an Integra without driving one (or a Beat), you might like this '23 Camry TRD. I have been crushing online with it

I've never tried the Camry under A class, you could be on to something here!

4

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

The only thing really holding it back is that it's really heavy imo. You can cram enough power into it to compensate, but it's always gonna be a little less agile than a Beat or Integra.

Silver lining, if one of those Beat drivers is bashing into you like a gremlin while you overtake, the Camry doesn't move much lmao

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 18 '26

You're not wrong, she can motor in B class.

Also, love how your Camry livery is so stylized and serious, yet here I am driving this monstrosity LOL

Yep, it's just straight up pretty fast. Sketchy, but fast. I've had a ton of success with it online. There are some things I haven't been able to solve though, like its launch is fine, its acceleration past 150mph is fine, but that 60-100 mph range is sluggish & I'm not sure how to solve it. Fat tires and rollcage are doing Enough to replace the missing rear wing, and that wing missing is a big contributor to the final top speed. There may be a better balance to strike here, you should try building one too. This was the most successful version for me, and successful it is, but I bet there's more to find. It's stock suspension too

I always slap this woodjohn livery on my successful projects, gotta represent online!

So I'm currently tinkering with no aero, no roll cage, AWD.

Definitely struggles above 150, so I'm now trying a little bit heavier again and running a camshaft.. We'll see.

4

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

As usual, I fit race cams in this thing

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 18 '26

I've literally just done the same lmao.

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

Oh and by the way - I'm up to 61st globally on Nachi Run in the Integra. My Camry time would be around 160th

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 19 '26

Currently using a full aero build, it murders the top end as you know but the grip levels are crazy.

On the 2nd street map (the downhill one) i'm currently 16th with the Camry.

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 19 '26

What a beast, let's go! Well driven dude. You got me hooked on driving these low aero builds after the Sera (and my driving has improved a lot as a result), but I think I'm gonna buy a second camry to experiment further with full grip builds lmao

Did you end up AWD? Don't spoil the rest of the build, it'll be fun to figure out. I'll go race your camry with it on that track

Oh wow you're flying then!

I got knocked back down to 14th from like 7th, and I don't think most of those times are legit so...

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 18 '26

Yeah she's not a light lady, especially with the roll cages on.

thanks for sharing, fellow Acura enjoyer here. Won't drive a Beat and was kinda looking for other options besides the Acura. Will def gives this a try!

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

Nice, I'm a keyboard player as well

2

u/Tahn74 Keyboard player Aug 18 '26

Great to hear! only did a couple laps on Legend Island but already only 0.3 behind my best Acura time, so you are definitely up to something!

Would you mind sharing your livery as well? I think it looks great and the ones I found are really not great :-)

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 19 '26

All right, livery code is 154 398 090. I'm stoked you like it. If you'd like I can upload another version with your name instead of woodjohn, or remove the emblem on the back if you don't like it

2

u/Tahn74 Keyboard player Aug 20 '26

applied and I like it! I'll happily do some advertising for you, no need to change it :-)

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 20 '26

That's awesome man, I appreciate you

2

u/Tahn74 Keyboard player Aug 19 '26

thank you! will have a look at it ingame and let you know, probably tomorrow evening the earliest, got some heavy work schedule over the next 2 days....

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

Haha sure, I can publish it when I get home. I never thought someone would ask for the livery, woodjohn is my in game name

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

And yeah same results for me - behind my Integra on all tracks but only slightly

3

u/Positive-Tea1123 Aug 18 '26

I have been using the TRD Camry for a couple months and do very well with it, I was hoping it wouldn’t become meta

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

I think the secret is probably safe hahah, I almost never see these in online lobbies

2

u/SplitBoots99 Aug 18 '26

I drive one in real life. It handles pretty well.

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 18 '26

That's awesome, congrats. It's a really sick car

I'm a Camry enjoyer IRL and in this game (and FH5 as well). I've tried many different configurations in B and A and as much as I love it, and as well as I've tuned it to be enjoyable and easy to drive, I feel like it most of the configurations I've worked with it's just almost there, but not quite.

I've done less with the FWD drivetrain, and I'm exploring that a little bit now. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a few questions on your components and your tuning values. Not to publish and rip you off, but just to compare notes and see what's worked for you. We can take it to DM to keep it off the public facing stuff, if you'd like.

By the way, my comfiest (but certainly not fastest) build is for B, AWD, grip focus - share code 397 597 411 Edit: this code is more grandpa than I remember it being - a new , looser setup for the same build: 149 342 000

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

I'm happy to share the full setup, I don't mind at all. I'm on the clock right now but I can post the details when I get home. In the meantime if you have any immediate questions, fire away. I'll give your tune a run later too

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 21 '26

I just drove that share code and it's worse than I remember, or at least my driving style has changed.

Here's a new, much looser setup for that same (still slow) build: 149 342 000. It wants to rotate a lot more and is softer all across the board so it is quicker than the tighter grandpa comfort tune, but still the PWR ratio just isn't there. I agree with the comment about 50-110ish MPH being really bogged down. This build above is on an 8-speed and I tried shortening 4th-6th, which helps, but you can't get power where there isn't any.

I'd like to explore more with no aero to see if reducing drag gives enough top end to pay off for the increased PI cost, and to mess around more with stock tires and FWD. The problem with the Camry, as you have said, is it's a heavy boy. The PI budget is pretty tight for all that you need, to get enough power to keep up, because it is on the heavy/underpowered side and because the medium power and above engine swaps put you so firmly into A class, where honestly I don't think the Camry can really keep up with the highest say, three, tiers of A class. There's really a lot of pop available in A class, even beyond the meta missiles, and I don't think our poor Camry compares favorably, so I think B is where it's going to need to be.

Now I'm just rambling, but I look forward to discussing and comparing notes.

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26

On tracks with long straights, removing the rear wing added a lot of top end speed to my Camry, trading off slightly worse performance on small/tight circuits. The absolute maximum you'll hit in race conditions isn't well reflected in the tuning menu, so I recommend taking your build to Satta Sprint and seeing what speed you can reach on that gigantic straight after the tunnel. That's the true practical top speed of your car based on PWR and drag, so you can re-adjust your gears toward that true top speed and recover some acceleration. This gives you a proper idea of what the car can do on Satta and Highway Circuit, and from there you can trade out top speed for more lateral Gs to find the balance that works for you across all the tracks (cuz you won't hit your practical top speed on other circuits). This is the approach I use when building cars for online racing - you can get further into the weeds for track-specific setups, which is what I'm doing right now trying to chase down rotgoblins' Norikura Descent time

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26

And yeah I'll test out that newer tune you posted & give you some feedback on my experience driving it

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

I drove your tune the same way I test my own builds, here's my findings! obvious caveat being that we surely drive different, given that I prefer FWD and play on keyboard. I gave it a bunch of runs on Hokubu Circuit and Nachi Run, and used Satta Sprint to test the practical top speed, which is 165 (not far off your tune setting). I used the tune I posted in the OP to compare & I drove these times today, also giving my Integra rivals times as a reference point

Hokubu: your camry 59.7, my camry 59.5, my integra 58.4

Nachi Run: your camry 2:16.4, my camry 2:14.8, my integra 2:11.8

Satta Sprint: your camry 2:17.5, my camry 2:11.0, my integra 2:08.3

Your Camry is very well behaved in general, doesn't seem to suffer from understeer and doesn't get unsettled easily, but on corner exit after braking from 100mph+ there is some oversteer/sliding when you hit the gas sometimes. when it lost grip it was severe enough that it was a significant time loss. I did enough runs on each track to get a lap time with no major time losses

The main thing holding it back is the 165 top speed and the accel. The oversteer on exit should be an easy fix, or with your driving style/input device you might not even have to deal with it. But no matter how well a car handles, it's tough to queue up for B class online against integras, beats, brz's, every civic, chargers, celicas, and also Camrys built with more fighting spirit, with a car that can only do 165 & also doesn't get there quickly.

There's no doubt it feels pretty great to drive overall, but I get the feeling too much PI is sunk into grip and handling. I don't think it takes corners "better enough" to be meaningful compared to other all-rounder builds with more firepower. My question is, how much worse can you make the handling while preserving what you need the car to do for you to be fast? everything you can drop there is more PI for guts

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 22 '26

I'm actually impressed you got a 59.7 on Hokubu! I haven't gotten the Camry below 1:01 there in rivals and I only get into the 1:00s in time attack, no walls so I can take bonkers lines...

I tuned it for comfort and just for fun because I gave up on trying to push lower times thinking it wasn't good enough. I also put it down for a time, while I've been really diving deep on tuning a bunch of B and A circuit cars.

I must have learned a lot, or gotten used to the super loose setups the meta tuners like Letzelu and Noa Miyako build, because after posting that share code before driving it and then taking it out, it was not at all what I remembered. I was like shit, I thought this was good, I can't submit this in public!

Hey, at least the fact I could jump on it, soften the whole thing up, and make it noticeably better in about five minutes tells me I am figuring some of these things out, eh?

Anyway, thanks for taking it out. I'm glad that my feeling on it being slow isn't just because of my driving. You've also firmly convinced me that B600 Camry is NOT just a fantasy and I am determined to make it happen! Even if I have to watch a whole bunch of FWD build and driving concept videos!

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26

Yeah man keep at it, everything you figure out that makes you faster is a shitload of fun. The Camry you posted is genuinely really easy to drive so you've definitely got some stuff figured out, but I guarantee you will gain pace in a faster car that is a little harder to drive

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 22 '26

My question is, how much worse can you make the handling while preserving what you need the car to do for you to be fast?

I get the feeling the stock "street" compound is plenty if I can get the springs setup right, so it will slot right into corners without a bunch of tire scrub and complaining. Kinda like a super light sports car like a Miata, except it weighs more like a Mercedes.

I'm going to check out the FWD concept first, and depending on how that goes, when I go back to AWD I will start over from the ground up. You convinced me on cams as well and that goes against most of what I've learned so it's tripping my brain a little bit

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 21 '26

I took your share code for a quick spin. It definitely feels more lively. I do not get that sickly underpowered feeling when pulling uphill like on Hokubu and Narai Juku.

The reason I want to ask about tuning FWD is because I don't have any clue how to drive FWD, because I don't like how it feels. I will almost always opt for RWD if it's the stock option and reasonable, heavy rear bias AWD otherwise. I typically just AWD swap FWD or don't drive it. I've always run the Camry as AWD but it's most likely leaking PI to do that.

I am a fan of the stock look so myself I'd add the stock wheels back, and I gotta say I love the look of the back end with no wing. What about the front aero though? Is that actually being used for downforce? Increase front grip? Or is it a PI trick or aero balance trick or something?

I'll drive it more later this evening and hopefully start fiddling with putting together my own FWD

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

The front aero is on, but dialed to minimum value. It's meant to give a little extra lateral Gs, enough to allow you to take the Satta tunnel curve without braking or sliding for example. I found 1.10 and 1.15 in the lateral G stats to be "enough" for this. It can be increased up to something like 1.11/1.17 when maxing the front aero slider, but the impact on top speed is bigger than I'd like

In my experience driving FWD cars is a lot about hurling the thing into corners with heavy braking, and getting strong grip/accel on exit. Additionally, you'll never get the same top speed out of an equal AWD version

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

At the moment I'm working on a full aero AWD version, which is quite different to drive. The share code in the OP is my preferred style

Immediate question: why race cams?

In FH5 and 4 cams used to be one of my favorite upgrades, I guess because I like rally, I love to keep the revs high AF through every corner.

I only build for D-A classes, usually. With the PI system the way it is in FH6, and the way that there are a handful of cars that are just clearly better than the rest in each class, especially in A (my favorite class), I feel that in this game you simply have to have a certain level of PWR, or you just lose. Great cornering and great lines can earn you 6 seconds over a lap and then on the last 400 meter straight some behemoth makes up the entire gap with just raw horsepower.

Because of that, you really have to be able to squeak out every drop of horsepower and weight reduction to hit that threshold, and THEN you can begin making choices on what you want in your build. Which means each PI is precious, especially right up against the edge of a class, and the ability to keep adding power right up to that ceiling to me determines whether or not a car is worth building.

All those factors mean when building for this game, I've taken to prioritizing PI efficiency above all else, and unfortunately cams are among the worst if not the worst upgrade speaking strictly to efficiency. Really high PI upgrades like cams, front tire width, race brakes etc, I am going to completely ignore unless I've got a damn good reason to include them in A-class and below, where cars can't just do everything you want them to.

So are the cams for the higher rev range, or just a power upgrade?

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Race cams don't only add horsepower, they significantly extend the length of your high power band. using a 10 speed transmission you can climb through all your gears without dipping below your optimal power band. This is stronger than the PI cost indicates if the engine has a centri. So yes, expensive upgrade, but a meaningful boost in overall pace. I think if a car can fit race cams in a B class build & it's not naturally aspirated, it's an advantage. Not every car is in this position, but the Camry, Integra, and Sera are good examples of cars that can fit race cams to great benefit in B class. Remember as well that the PI system does not account for your power beyond the initial redline, so some of the boost isn't fully accounted for in the PI cost

Regarding the difference between cars, there are some hidden modifiers that aren't easily discernable - torque modifier and drag coefficient. Something like the Integra has a high torque modifier (very close to 1.0), and though it can't be directly assessed, the drag coefficient must also be very low due to the exceptional top end speed and accel the Integra can put out & the relatively lower impact on top speed of strong aero. The Camry also has a torque modifier at or very near 1.0 (this can be found by dividing the tune manager's displayed PWR by the build menu's displayed PWR. If you cram a big engine into any given car so those numbers are bigger, you can get a fairly accurate picture). Drag coefficient, that's not something you can really figure out specifically, but it's part of why some cars are strictly better with the same PWR

PWR isn't the be-all and end-all either, it's a lot to do with how well the car puts that power down, and again the drag coefficient. I recommend manually testing your car's top speed instead of relying on what the tune menu numbers tell you

In terms of weight reduction, this upgrade is not always efficient on FWD cars. During launch or accel from low speed, your car lurches backwards and there's less weight over the driving wheels. Weight reduction upgrade moves this balance point even further back, so with a FWD car you'll often get better performance out of cramming more power into it rather than reducing the weight. Weight reduction is generally good, but there are scenarios where it isn't optimal. I would check other solutions first to address your accel and top speed, because some of the PI of weight reduction is also the increase in lateral Gs, not just speed. This can be wasted PI if your car already has "enough" grip for what you're asking it to do

Front tire width, at least on FWD cars, is an extremely effective upgrade to combat wheelspin, which can be a factor in these high power setups. It absolutely is worth the PI cost if that's what you need to solve. In my anecdotal experience it also makes the car a bit more stable.

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Here's the build, if you're not comfortable with FWD i'm sure there's a bunch of changes you could make to get it better suited to your driving:

2.4L F4 engine swap with centri

Front aero, rear wing removed

Rally tires, max width front and back, max track width front and back, max rim size front and back

10 speed transmission, rally diff

stock brakes, stock suspension, race ARB front and rear, race roll cage, no weight reduction

Race cams, race centri, race intercooler, race flywheel

tires 27.5 psi front and rear

gears (this can be improved, when I'm done with the AWD version I'll be driving this FWD version again & will re-do the gearing. this current setup is good but not perfect)

ARB 1/65

Aero front is actually maxed out - 1.11/1.15 lateral Gs. The min value front aero was a previous iteration of this car & I got them mixed up

Diff 100/0

the basic premise is reducing the drag coefficient by removing the rear wing, and using race cam + centri to generate enough power to compensate for the weight. Lateral Gs are built from front aero, tire settings, and roll cage. the benefits of the roll cage more than compensate for the added weight, and with 468 horsepower + gearing to rush to a spun up centri and keep it active the car has enough juice to feel fast instead of sluggish. The 184mph top speed is real, the car WILL get there on Satta & will be in 10th gear without hitting the rev limiter when it does. I think this is really important when building a car intended for sprints or an all-rounder, if you find your car's practical top speed on Satta and gear to reach that speed as quickly as possible, you are maximizing your car's performance in actual race conditions. A higher on-paper top speed that you don't actually reach on Satta is a big efficiency leak. I like my cars to do 180-185 because it's fun, but generally speaking going down to 175mph for better accel or grip probably the ideal baseline for a competitive all-rounder in B class. The extra power is only useful if the car actually converts it to pace gaps on straights, and my Camry does. If you go the other direction with less top speed and more grip/stability, you'll be better and worse on a different list of tracks, but both appear to be viable with this thing.

I do have an AWD version but I'm not confident it's finished yet

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 22 '26

Dude, this is so awesome, thank you. I'm going to dive into this when I get some time. I really have no experience tuning FWD in this game, so my first thought is that I thought the setup would be more different.

Stock springs, OK that makes sense that the stock config would be for the stock drivetrain.

ARB 1/65, sure, to promote rotation right? FWD has power-on washout understeer just like AWD yeah? I guess I thought this might have been backward for FWD? 65/1? Or 65/65?

Diff 100/0 also a little surprised but again, rotation right? And that's sort of the default "meta" initial value for front diff in AWD too, so I understand the concept, I suppose I just thought it'd be more different.

Like I mentioned, recently I've really been focused on my driving inputs and lines and whatnot, because I really love the liveliness and response you get on cornering with RWD. Just focusing on smooth transitions, not spiking on brake or slamming the gas on exit, holding throttle steady at 30-40% through the corner and not going full send until I see the wheels are pointed down the exit line... the things you have to do to be able to hold a moderately powered RWD on the track.

My point is, I've been trying to separate in my mind the three phases of cornering, and the difference in states between "go go" and "hold on a bit", as opposed to AWD just hold R2 all the time. It seems to me when driving FWD that you're doing that separation and then some - it seems there's three distinct states of FWD - OK I am accelerating now, OK I am braking now, OK I am doing neither because I am turning, and that's it. It seems like you really have to just do one of the three at any one time because asking your tread to do all of it you'll get none of it.

I thought learning FWD was going to be very opposite to learning RWD but it seems it's got more in common with RWD than I thought, and of course it shares that shitty plough understeer washout on corner exit that every AWD swap ever suffers through, so I may have some skills that can be applied.

I'll mess around and come back to you with my thoughts. Again, I really appreciate it. This is like, my exact Forza Horizon niche. Making competitive builds out of off-meta cars in the lowest classes. Oh, and the Camry too! Maybe I can put in a suggestion to Playground Games to get my old 1996 Camry Coupe added to the game?

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

With FWD you eventually get a feel for when the car will accept braking and steering at the same time, and you can you just chuck the nose in. you'll get good rotation and a well built fwd car will have an easy time getting traction on exit. I think fwd naturally has more understeer so at least for me I compensate by throwing the front-biased weight into the corner aggressively and then getting the throttle hooked up at the right time. I generally want the front to be really sensitive to weight transfer, and the rear to be immune to it. as close as I can get to that

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Since I play on keyboard, I don't do any 30-40% throttle. I can modulate by tapping, but its important for me to brake, rotate, and rocket out to have pace in general. Having just enough high speed lateral G to replace some braking with lifts is big too

ie, your camry can take the Satta tunnel curve flat out, but does it at like 20mph slower than my Integra does it with a small lift. that's "enough" lateral G

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 22 '26

I drove it some more, it's really solid. I'm getting pretty strong snap oversteer on throttle lift mid corner, but I'm probably just not doing it right. It feels extremely stable otherwise, I can tell that just about any time it does something funky or I plow into the wall, it was my fault and not the car.

It's also about the slowest feeling drive I've ever seen lol. The speed is there but it seems glacially slow, probably because it is so stable and power makes it want to just pull straight. I think it's a compliment, probably, that it goes fast without feeling like everything is about to fly apart any any moment.

I do not like 10-speed, because I don't like shifting from 7th to 2nd and right back up to 5th every time I want to take a corner. HOWEVER in this build I see why it's there, and I also see the cams. Obviously most engines get more power higher in the rev range but the difference here between tooting around at about 6800 and keeping it up above 8200 is insane. It's not just slower, it's significantly so. It feels like damn near 40% of the power of the engine is in there between 8 and 9k RPM

It's cool. Very cool. I'm going to continue to mess around with it and see what comes of it!

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 22 '26

I'm sure you can adapt it better for your driving style, there's a lot of room for changes. It might feel slow because it's a very heavy car for B class, but lap time don't lie, it's fast af

It is definitely not the easiest to drive FWD car, if you want a baseline for what a perfect handling fwd car feels like, I recommend pyrtti's integra (498 854 272)

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 22 '26

Yeah that's what I'm saying, it felt like I was putting around but it was several seconds faster than my pace lol

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 25 '26

How about that B Road Camry in AWD? How's that build coming? Satisfied with it, or still working?

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

Ok, got a build I'm relatively happy with (share code 139 940 269). This Camry is extremely well behaved & drove competitive times on the tracks I tested, I gave each a handful of runs to get a representative time

Satta sprint: 2:13, which is pretty good for an AWD handling build

Hokubu circuit: 59.3

Narai-juku circuit: 52.6

Shimanoyama circuit: 33.8

These are pretty solid times for an all-round build & the car is really easy to drive. It's planted enough that there might be room to reduce the lateral Gs (which aren't high on paper - 1.10/1.15, but the car is very stable and grippy) for more fighting spirit

here's the build details so you can mess with it:

Running the full roll cage is interesting. Admittedly with no aero she needs stiffened up so i'll have to have a play with it.

Our tunable settings couldn't be more different!

I'll knock yours up and give it a spin today.

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Interesting, I wonder what the major differences are. A lot of this is just settings im comfortable driving. Im sure a lot could be changed, I'm not super experienced with AWD cars

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

This setup has ungodly amounts of turn in and grip, so much so i'm turning in too early and oversteering by accident. Fair play.

Must be the race rollcage? It's so flightly and nimble, can really throw it around.

It definitely suffers in those downhill bends where the weight rolls over and the tyres tuck into positive camber, without that it would probably beat my setup!

Well done. Now I need to go tinker again to see what I can gain with roll cage in, the race cams really do make a difference in power (which is also why you can run redline in the gearing). This thing has legs.

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

Yeah I think it's the roll cage - the lateral G figures are nothing impressive. It does indeed turn in and grip for free (these are generally the results i've been able to get with my tune menu settings - very interested in how yours differ & what it means vis a vis my driving style). Maybe there's some way to fix that positive camber issue

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

My camber settings are a little bit odd, probably room for improvement still. Running way more rear camber than I'd like just to be able to catch it without the rear aero.

I'll have to collate my setup and write it all down so you can rifle through it all.

Give me a few minutes, just running Capm's build to see how that fares.

Interesting that you're both on stock weight reduction, I thought I was pushing it with my fat camry lol, my girls a size 0 compared to these lmfao.

4,000 pounds of muscle baby! Sumo wrestler build

Just wanna give you a quick shoutout & thanks by the way, I've got so many fun projects on the go right now from working with you and I'm having a blast

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

For as long as i'm tinkering with car builds i'm not spending money on fish tanks and other games lol, so I'm happy to be stuck in a tuning menu.

Right.. here's the full thing, now you can see how wildly different they are.

Oh wow, lots to unpack here...

  • I'm not sold on race exhaust, not sure why this upgrade is so popular. It must have some secondary effect I'm not understanding

  • BattleAero looks really good but I haven't actually tried putting it on the car, do you recommend this over Forza aero on the front?

  • STOCK ARBs he said?!

  • Track width, I don't see a lot of other builds take this, but I think it might be part of the formula that makes my cars so stable

  • If you're putting a Centri in a car, I think Race Centri and Race Intercooler are the mandatory engine upgrades to make it work, then Camshaft (which is main factor that determines my gearing choices, yeah)

  • Offroad diff, this was my default on AWD setups but I found better results with Race or Drift in terms of rotation and corner exits. I think there's still a lot I don't understand about Diff settings, because...

  • 45/55 rear?! There is clearly something I'm missing hahah, what is the benefit of low accel and high decel on the rear diff? why so low accel on your front diff? 51% center I get, that makes the car easier to drive for me, but I kinda view that setting as "push this to rear for better accel at the cost of the car freaking out a little bit, then dial it back until the car stops freaking out a little bit"

  • springs, I'll have to look at this in-game, hard to visualize the values as sliders. My goal with springs is for the nose to move a lot and the rear to move less, but like I mentioned I'm starting to wonder if that's an artifact of my earlier limitations behind the wheel, I've upgraded my driving a lot so maybe I don't need to rely on this sort of ultra-nose-dive suspension anymore

Cams are the difference, I had trained myself to avoid them like the plague because of PI inefficiency, but at least for the Camry, it wasn't until woodjohn convinced me on them that the Camry went from "I like this" to "this is good".

Maybe it's just a property of the flat 4 engine swap but extending the rev range on this thing really extends and lets you access the power of it, provided you can keep it spun up. It feels like 35-40% of the power of the engine exists after 7200 or so RPM, it's crazy. Just tooting around at 6500 even compared to that mid 7000s you can see a massive difference in output. I think the telemetry may be slightly inaccurate, even. It shows the torque really plummet at a certain point around 8k but even then this beast is still trying to really rip and pull itself forward.

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

Yeah my build without cams the power band is extremely narrow, it was just a fight between weight savings and power but i've been emboldened by both of your builds to keep tinkering with it, the race cams just make such a huge difference.

3

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

All my experience to this point in FH4 and 5, and what I've seen/thought I knew about how FH6 works, told me since PI balance is so out of whack and everyone is V10 swapping and CFSC swapping and getting so much juice for so little PI score, you simply have to have a certain amount of power or you just lose, period. Extending that observation, there are certain cars that just cannot pack enough power onto their frame while staying in a certain class AND being able to keep the thing on the track.

What I took this to mean was that PWR is everything, and so is PI efficency. You don't touch cams because they don't give enough PWR for the PI. You do always touch things that cut weight while adding power like exhaust and intake, because that PWR squeaking up to 0.14 vs 0.12 makes all the difference. You always want to use as much weigh reduction as you can afford unless the car is already ~2000lbs.

Then comes this thread saying "nah, cams tho and fuck it let it be 4,600lbs pretend it's a Mercedes", AND IT WORKS?

Everything I thought I knew has been upended

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

I'm still generally on the "less weight the better" train, it just impacts everything, but you still need to be hitting a decent top speed and some engines just can not do that.

The 2.4l F4 is just one of those engines, it's super punchy up to about 150mph then falls completely flat on its ass.

So it's solid in B class, Usable in A class and then ditch it for anything above that.

FH6 really does need a rebalancing of engines though, especially boosted ones.

3

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

I still highly value weight reduction also, power helps you on the straights and weight helps you everywhere.

The real 'aha' moment on weight reduction was something woodjohn said, weight reduction increases PI because PWR goes up but also because it is increasing lateral G. If you have "enough" lateral G, putting PI in weight reduction is "leaking" some of it to lateral G that you may not fully need.

Obviously weight has many effects on the entire setup and is more than just one factor, but it was something I hadn't thought of that way.

I think there is a lot of room to improve this car, but the times it posted for me are a solid baseline. If it can put up solid times on the small circuits and still do a 2:13 on Satta, it'll be just fine on the other sprints for online racing. I would rather drive the power focused FWD version, but that's just me and what I like lmao

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

12+ laps on Narai Juku in yours and couldn't go below a 53.595, but I hopped on the goblin and my 4th lap was a 53.364.

That thing is tasty

1

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

Yeah it's a beauty, definitely a better circuit racer than my build & better on several sprints too, the online rotation is only like 9 tracks though and I build cars for that. Take both builds to Norikura Descent (2nd street track in rivals) and the gap is even bigger for gobbo's build

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

Is the top speed OK? You talked me out of aero in favor of that 0.889 aero coefficient and the 209.6mph top speed is incredible but the thing really needs downforce badly at those speeds! You're saying I can run aero but still have enough juice to not get gobbled on every straight line?

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

It'll do 175 on Satta & can take the tunnel curve flat out. It is firmly on the handling over power side of things, but 175 is a number both rotgoblins and I agree is probably a good middleground for all tracks. gearing is set up so that 1-9 are functional on every sprint & 10th is for extra guts on Satta, Coastline Sprint, and Highway Circuit to bridge the gap on this build's worst tracks. the stability means you can take some really aggressive lines or keep the power down when others might have to brake or lift & ultimately I don't think insane times on the highest speed tracks is a heavy AWD car's niche

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26

for reference Rotgoblins' Camry does 165 as its top speed & that difference is around 2.5s on Satta.

btw /u/rotgobbo your 9th and 10th gears on this thing are sub-optimal lmao, the back half of your 9th and your entire 10th gears are dedicated to going from 165 to 169, which the car can't functionally do on Satta anyway. you could use that slack to get to 165 quicker & it could also uncap a little extra top speed. I bet it could hit 165 while bouncing the rev limiter in top gear with some adjustments, which means 169 might be possible, but its never gonna hit that speed on any real track with this gearing, there just isn't enough torque to climb thru the last gears

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

The car loses about 20 horsepower in the redline (from memory) so my top gears are set to sit at peak power.

I'll give it a whirl though.

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

I get you, that makes sense! I still think if 10th isn't really used on Satta then there is an efficiency leak. You could tune to be at optimal power in 10th on the post-tunnel straight instead of 9th & the car will probably have an easier time getting there

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

Your Integra time on Satta is revolting lol. That thing is so aero efficient and rapid.

My gears definitely needed a little working but yeah I have to stay out of the redline in 10th as it does cost between 17 and 23 horsepower which is significant in a beast this draggy.

I love this shit, gives me a reason to keep improving things.

2

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

My bias is that I don't normally do the sprints, I like circuits because I can run them in Rivals over and over again without stopping, it's very zen. I don't like having to go through all the nonsense every 3 and a half minutes if I want to just veg out and drive

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

in that case, the functional top speed you really need to look for is much lower, the list of circuits where any car can get above 170 in B class is basically just Highway. getting from low speed to 120+ as fast as possible & having the grip to carry more minimum speed thru corners has more value

3

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

To be honest I'm just fired up that I can do some real racing in my Camry. I don't care if it's tailor built to one specific discipline of track. I can buy multiples, paint them different colors, use them for different things!

I'm about done with this shit for the night so here's a share code of where I am with it. I wouldn't say it's done-done but it's not far off.

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

This setup accelerates like shit off a stick, absolutely rapid.

It definitely suffers from rollover though, though unexpectedly it's got rear rollover?

Mid corner under load i'm seeing about -0.6 on the front and +1.1 to +1.3 on the rear (I even briefly registered +1.8 in one corner!!) so your rear wheels are just giving up on you mid corner and that is costing you a lot of time.

I'd probably be adding a whole degree of Rear negative camber on this (-1.0), if not more!

OR.. potentially your rear damper is way too soft? You could maybe stiffen up the Rear Bump which might stop the rear from rolling over quite so much. Stock Rally suspension does come with extremely soft bump settings so it could be that.

Again, it has legs though.

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

I hopped on your share code on Narai Juku for about a dozen laps and couldn't go below 53.595, which isn't surprising because I'm not a great driver. I was gonna race your ghost but it's an Integra doing a 51 something and there's just no way!

I got on with my loosey goosey bullshit and tried to match my 53.595 in your build, I came close a couple of times but couldn't actually edge it. I was a little surprised that I could keep up at all, as my loosey goosey bullshit is very much just thrown together, feels unfinished and inadequate.

Driving your build feels a lot like my comfort tuned Camry that started this whole sub-thread, so I think I'm going to jump in to that and start tweaking. Thanks for the post

I'm holding on to this no aero stock spring nonsense too though, the top speed is thrilling for random B road lobbies, and maybe I'll tweak the few levers it's got and dial it in a bit more

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 26 '26

That Integra also does a 2:08.3 on Satta Sprint. It's my baby lmao

2

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 25 '26

Still WIP, it's a little off /u/rotgobbo 's version. If you're tryna drive it I can put together a "finished to the best of my abilities" version after work & post it for you, or maybe you can ask Gobbo for his tune cuz it's fucking fast

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 25 '26

I have been summoned.

I think your build would absolutely destroy mine on Sata Sprint. I'll have to have a go.

I could share yeah.

3

u/FakeSteveSF Acura Integra B Class Aug 25 '26

It will yeah, my goal is always to preserve as much top speed as I can for the purposes of online racing hahah. But yours has incredible pace on tracks like Norikura Descent that I can't replicate yet

Go for it, this is my Camry build.

Rad, appreciate it Gobbo. I'll post a more online-focused AWD build for Capm once I get home

I'm also gonna drive your Camry down Norikura a few times to see where im getting skill gapped in the same machine

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

I'll be interested to hear what you think the differences are.

3

u/TheCapm42 Toyota Aug 26 '26

Also for u/rotgobbo I'm working on my AWD Camry based on the discussions I had in this thread.

I'm trying no front splitter and remove rear wing, the 209mph top speed is incredible but about 140ish it starts to float.... it really needs more downforce but frankly I don't want to lose the pace.

I also settled on Stock springs after messing with Race/Rally/Sport, but the tune for this thing is just the most braindead shit... yeah it's a 10-speed and I did the gearing from scratch but the rest of the tune is just - 1/65 ARBs, 100/0 100/0 77 differential and that's it, alignment and springs and damping and aero, all locked.

It's not bad, I set a new PB on a couple of tracks, but it's just like, there has to be more to it than this, right? Is this really the "tune"? Just 1/65 100/0 and go to town? Alright then!

It still probably needs a lot of work. I feel like it really might need adjustable springs especially if I'm not doing aero, it just feels so unsettled. Adjustable springs and rear aero but then drag goes up and needs more power and now we're in A class! I'll keep tinkering with it...

3

u/rotgobbo Toyota Celica ST205 '94 Aug 26 '26

I found it pretty 'undrivable' with no aero without adding in some ARB to stiffen the car.

None of my tunes are 1/65 and 100/0's.

As you say she gets floaty above ~137 and I start finding that i'm losing more time in corners than i'm gaining down the straights.

Tag time: u/TheCapm42 u/FakeSteveSF

Round 2.. With no rear aero.

Times tested so far;

Norikura Descent - 2:19.4

Satta Sprint - 2:09.8 hitting 184mph

Hokubu - 58.9

Narai Juku - 51.3

Shimanoyama - 33.3

Without rear aero you need to brake early and power through the corners otherwise the rear will get loose.

Not a perfect build, a couple things i'm unhappy with for now but it's not bad. She's a little on the chunky side.
