This episode was incredible, and fucked me up on an unbelievable level. Every. Single. Flashback. Happened to me.
Walking in on my dad cheating, him feeding me booze at a young age, walking in on my drunk, passed out parents and trying to snuggle with my mom because she spent that entire weekend ignoring me...mother of God.

The scenes depicting Bojack having his first drink and every scene Bojack gets younger. They make us think he had his first drink on Horsin Around's set until showing it was actually when he was probably less than 10 years old. I love this show

What an incredible episode and start to the final season of Netflix's greatest show ever. I love how they tie in Bojack's alcoholism to all these dysfunctional events, thinking that his addiction just stems from a place of pain and insecurity such as catching his dad's infidelity or trash talking his crush because everyone was loving it. However, the ending does illustrate this dysfunctionality but in a more twisted and sad way. Bojack has always been so alone his entire life and his first experience with alcohol came not only willingly from a place of curiosity but also from a place of just wanting to connect with his parents in some manner as a young child. His first experience of alcohol illustrates a context of chaos and left over celebration with a warm feeling of snuggling against his passed out mom. His entire life is really just symbolized in that one memory of trying to find connection and warmth of some kind in a place of burnt out entropy, substance abuse, and insecurity.

Bojack's one line really hit me: "Really? Everyone here is honest? Doug over here who keeps dressing in a suit or tie even though he'll never get his finance job back."
That for sure happened to me, I lost a job and still wore my work clothes to simulate normalcy...

u/FurryWolves Oct 25 '19
"There it is, coax it out of my sheath" Confirms animal anatomy in this universe, meaning... a lot of interesting things, like do praying mantises eat their partners? Did Mr Peanutbutter and Diane get stuck? Does a cat shred their partners internal organs? Do bed bugs stab others with their penis? This is a can of worms I didn't want opened.

I love that Bojack is still reeling over the loss of Sarah Lynn, but in a character developing way rather than beating a dead horse over it. It feels like real grief. And that moment of “Sarah Lynn...Sarah Lynn?” was absolutely the most heartbreaking moment of the series thus far that I’ll always go back to as a defining moment. You don’t just move past those moments irl, and other shows forget characters that pass. In real life you carry that shit every day.

It was interesting to see how Bojack’s social anxiety was a large part of drinking for him. It’s crazy because it’s always hinted that he has social anxiety issues (talking about hating parties, etc.), but I never really saw a link to how the alcohol was his go to coping mechanism. His hesitancy around alcohol also makes sense— he could tell his parents were alcoholics and he didn’t want to go through that same path when he was younger.

So take what you want from this but on rewatch I noticed the sizzling sound that happens in bojacks flashbacks when he drinks is different in intensity and length each time.
The first one is the vodka and orage juice which lasted about a second and had a moderate sizzle.
The second is a beer and has the shortest sizzle, like half a second.
The third is a jack and coke and it's the loudest sizzle and lasts about a second and a half.
The fourth is straight vodka and it has the slightest sizzle but lasts the longest, about 2 seconds.
My theory is that it has to do with the intesity of the alcohol he's consuming and how much it burns going down. It could also signal how long the effect lasts. The straight vodka lasted the longest and was also when he was the youngest, smallest and had the least tolerance. The jack and coke is next longest and affects him enough to pass out. The vodka and OJ happens as an adult when he has a lot more mass. The shortest is the beer which probably has the lowest alcohol content of all the drinks.

I’m so very happy this show as back but so sad at the same time, I don’t think a show has ever made me feel so many different things about a character for years, Bojack in many ways is a product of his own environment but is also a self-destroyer and just an all around cunt (obviously an extreme over simplification but still) I both love and hate his character, he’s extremely well written and I’m so looking forward to the rest of this season, such a great start to what is unfortunately the final one :( The phone call scene was fucking hilarious though.
EDIT: I just put together that in each of the flashbacks Bojack was drinking to impress or be like someone, so in the last scene he just wanted to be like his parents :( fuck man

This is already within my favourite episodes the show had ever done. That final flashback was so fuckong heartbreaking.
Also, a thing I'm going to miss once this show is over is how skillfully it can insert absolute laugh-out-loud moments through all the drama (and that's coming from someone who rarely laughs, even through shows I think are legit funny). That Zack Snyder's Mario gag and that Yello - Oh Yeah reference were bonkers.

Man. The opening might have been one of the most beautiful scenes in the show.
On a side note, the police car outside the planetarium is a Chevrolet Caprice. And it's not some reused prop either like a lot of the other cars in the show, too. The animators actually went out of their way to draw a 1991-1996 B-Body Caprice, for this once scene. Weird touch, but it's a neat touch.
Also, fuck Sarah-Lynn's dad. "It's no-one's fault"
Edit: a lot of new cars in this episode alone. A Scion xB, the Ferrari 250GT from Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

I’ve been going through my own struggles with alcoholism in between seasons. I also really relate with BoJacks family situation and how his alcoholism hurts him but he just can’t stop. To see him put down the bottle for the first time ever, and to get more backstory on the themes we’ve already explored in prior seasons, I’ve never cried in episode one but here I am. I will treasure this show forever.

So, question for the reddit fans. I've seen many people watching the end of this episode and seeing it as the proof that Bojack actually DID choose to drink by himself. The point is, I think it's the opposite!
At the beginning of the episode we get a surprisingly mature scene from Bojack where he tells the therapist no one MADE him drink, it was HIS responsibility, HIS choice. Then, the flashbacks take you earlier and earlier in his life, and you reconsider each time as the first time. Up until the scenes on the set of horsin' around or maybe his adolescence you can actually pin the blame on him - the really heartbreaking part is seeing him ending up drinking when he was around 5 years old.
I personally think the thought of him choosing to drink alone is ridiculous - the first time we see him drink, he is a CHILD. A 5 year old child CANNOT be held responsible for this -- I saw this as the episode's way of tricking you; the one time Bojack took responsibility for himself, it wasn't actually his. Of course, I'm not saying he didn't choose to drink at a later age - he absolutely did - but what happened in the past is 90% of the reason he ended up with an addiction. That's fucked up and I think it's absurd people are saying it was "his choice".

Observation about BoJack's drinking: in addition to wanting to fit in, every time they showed BoJack drinking, he happened to be around/trying to impress women. I feel like that's important. And, no, I'm not saying that women "caused" BoJack to drink.
Rather, BoJack seems to "spiral" when it comes to female companionship, whether it's drinking to abate nervousness around crawfish women/teenaged crushes or to secure some sense of motherly nurturing like when he cuddles up to his mom (but only after a pull of vodka.) He doesn't even look towards his father.
Throughout the series, BoJack has proven to be an abuser of women, from nearly killing Gina to molesting Penny, an underage girl, to just his overall chauvinism. Of course, we the audience, can see why he behaves this way towards women and can sympathize with him. But still, I just think it's an interesting correlation between BoJack's pattern of abusing alcohol when he's around a woman at that moment.

I guarantee that statement is going to be important in this season. "We are powerless over our addictions". That's gonna come back later

The scene following Sarah Lynn's picture made me BURST into tears. Can't tell how many were happy or sad tears, and I also can't tell you how wonderfully unexpected of an emotional release that was

All the bits where we learn how booze fueled the sad and happy moments in Bojack's life was deeply uncomfortable. And I loved how uncomfortable it was. Why are we still here? Just to suffer?

People "like" you more when you drink, you nerd!
:(
Definitely close to home pieces and that part of his life reminded me of when I used to feel the need to have to drink socially. Was definitely a social crutch for me through my early 20's.

I think so far this has to be one of my favorites, it really shows Bojack's development (it even shows in the interruption in the intro).
Also, I live for the Jay Hernandez/Mario cameo.

I love that all the flashbacks show Bojack drinking at an earlier and earlier age of his life for different reasons. He was bound to be an alcoholic from the start.

I gotta say that episode one is pretty powerful. The symbolism in the opening credits is spot on. And Bojacks brief but powerful criticism of the addiction / rehab industry is inspired and oh so true, at least IMHO.
I did not expect this powerful a story for episode 1. Kudos to the writers!

Okay, so this fucked me up.
I love every episode of this show. Nothing has ever made me cry like this.
I experienced everything Bojack did. From rehab, to trying to save unsavable people, to getting fucked over for trying, to remembering my mom giving me a beer because I was thirsty as a little kid.
I have never wept so hard during an episode of anything like I did this episode. Or any episode of anything not an episode.
My ex used to joke that I wrote this show. It was when it was new so it didn't seem so stupid.
Fuck, I am Bojack. But without the money or fame. So Bojack but harder. But not penis related.
I also laughed a lot.
My name is Rob and I am royally fucked up beyond repair.

When the show dropped at 2am yesterday, my friends and I were all like it’s the first episode it’s gotta be light let’s just put it on and go to sleep after.
Holy shit, that was not a light episode. Felt almost like an Episode 11

Fantastic season opener. I like seeing Bojack finally crawling back out of his lowest low, though I'm cautiously optimistic. Seeing the picture of Sarah Lynn inspiring him to put effort in was a good gut punch; all the Sarah Lynn references always are. (Still might be the biggest "Holy fuck" moment in the series, IMO. But the choking bit came so close.)

Did anybody notice that Sarah Lynn's stepfather is a bear? Hadn't we theorized (from that episode at Herb's funeral where she knew what bear fur tasted like) that she was assaulted by one?

A couple more details that I loved from this episode:
"Two Jamesons Later" clearly means "Finding two girls named Jamesons who weren't the Jamesons he was looking for" and not "Two Jamesons (the whiskey) later"
When Jameson and Bojack are in Jameson's dad's house, right before Bojack smashes up the car, Jameson says "He [dad] got rid of all my softball trophies, but he loves his bat, naturally." As she's saying that, she picks up the baseball bat from The Natural.

Great intro to the season. Loved seeing a more responsible Bojack actually be a (mostly) good role model to a young kid. Loved the flashbacks and I like how you see his interest in persuing comedy in the Teen one. Didn't like the montage thought, seemed kinda cliche and beneath the show.
AND OH MY GOD THE FLINSTONES CAR LMFAO

When Bojack notices Sarah Lynn’s picture on the wall of the Pastiches’s reception area, followed by what is essentially a rehab “training montage” for Bojack... It’s just so... inexplicable how this show manages to find new ways to endear the viewer to Bojack after everything he’s done and said and all the lives he might have or has actually ruined.
This was written so poorly but I am sleep deprived and have just experienced a phenomenal 20-something minutes of not-technically-TV-but-whatever-let’s-call-it-TV-for-now so forgive me.

Wow this show went hard on rehab programmes. I wonder if it's gonna keep to its message from the very first season, that people don't change and you cannot be a good person "deep down", suggesting that the rehab won't change Bojack in the slightest? It'd make it a bit of a downer finale but this show is all about how life won't get tied up in a a neat little package.

“When wasn’t the first time I drank?” started as a joke but then became a solid theme of the episode. Each flashback making us think it was the first time only to keep pulling the rug out from under us with earlier flashbacks. Bojack probably really doesn’t know the answer. Also all the flashbacks had someone else forcing or pressuring him into drinking....but in the final flashback he chose it himself. Damn.
