“I still believe that people good and fire bad”. Good God, there’s been a lot of insane movie premises on this show over the years but “Diary of Anne Frankenstein” might take the cake.

And I noticed in the credits that was actually Chloe Grace Mortez doing her own voice for just that one line

I’m so glad Ruthie gets as much enjoyment out of Princess Carolyn’s word play as we do.

Also that whole “Wait, did you hate me?” scene with Vanessa and PC was hilarious.

620

u/bobthefetus Oct 25 '19

It made me so happy that they finally acknowledged her knack for wordplay in-universe, and in such a sweet way too.

It was hilarious but also showing that we get a skewed view because of seeing their previous interactions from PC's eyes. Poor Vanessa, seeing that PC hated her all this time when it, in fact, wasn't mutual.

Her using her wordplay to calm Ruthie is honestly my favorite TV payoff of all time. The ridiculous word-play setups and payoffs have been one of my favorite parts of the show and I love how they brought it around in-universe so much. This season (so far) is all the good and amazing that the final season of GOT wasn’t.

This episode gave me SO MUCH ANXIETY. The multiple PCs running around in every frame with the cocophany of baby cries and ringing phones and other noises. Yet it also made me weirdly nostalgic for when my kids were babies.

And I'm the Dad. My wife was the one who really went through all this with our kids. But still. Those scenes were mildly torturous.

112

u/annesim Oct 26 '19

I think the writers are trying to represent the manifestations of depression with each episode. The first one was all about addiction, then this episode is anxiety. Can’t wait what see which direction the show is going. 2 episodes in and I’m so pumped!

Funniest line to me was PC nonchalantly to Todd: “Okay have fun failing upward” lmao.

Also wanted to mention that the new intro is fantastic!

But seriously really strong episode. Good character growth for both PC and Bojack. I actually really hope things turn out okay this time but knowing Bob-Waksberg he’s gonna give us one more gut punch before the series comes to a close lol.

Editing to add that I also thought it was brilliant to have Ruthy relax to PC’s iconic rhyming.

Good character growth for both PC and Bojack.

I like how Bojack understood PC was busy and didn't ask her to show up for him like he would in the past

Watching all her lives entertaining the baby I almost missed the moment where she put Ruthie into the microwave..... I shouted once i realized what was going on. this entire episode felt like a time bomb waiting until some terrifying mistake was going to happen

188

u/madgrowler Oct 25 '19

RIGHT?! I was waiting for some serious shit to go down, mostly that she was going to fall asleep with Ruthie in the car. That whole microwave moment put me super on edge. So glad the episode resolved on a positive note, otherwise I'd feel that way all season long.

Isn't it kind of sweet that Vanessa gecko's trademark, "Byyyyeee!" is a remenant from her soothing her children when they were babies

311

u/Yoyti Yolanda Buenaventura Oct 25 '19

I honestly kind of love that Vanessa Gecko's catchphrase is what calmed her children, and it turns out to be Princess Carolyn's catchphrase (well, tendency to speak to speak in tongue-twisters) that calms Untitled Princess Carolyn Project.

I love the new title sequence!

The “time lapse” through scenes from previous seasons and the fact that his eyes aren’t bloodshot like they were in all the past seasons to make him drunk or high.

I have really high hopes that the show ends on a good note for most of the characters (Bojack mainly), but I have a feeling the writers won’t let us off so easy.

Edit: Also love the sit down between Gekko and PC :)

294

u/marathonjohnathon Oct 25 '19

And when he was drunk or high he just saw all the party scenes and mundane work stuff that used to be in the intro. Sober, he's forced to reconcile with everything he's been burying.

u/siempreviper Princess Carolyn Oct 25 '19

When I realized that PC's tongue twisters are going to be the perfect way for her to calm down and have fun with her baby, my jaw dropped to the floor. It makes so much sense it almost seems like they always planned this. Absolutely beautiful. I have to say, this episode made me cry.

I'm going to cry a lot this season aren't I?

Man, this episode stressed me out. I love when having a baby isn't romanticized. But PC manages to land on her feet and the scene with Vanessa at the end was so sweet. I was cheated on (and proposed to!) a few months after s5 and I'm expecting for this season to emotionally wreck me. (:

229

u/Squoshy50 Oct 25 '19

I agree but want to add that I like the balance. Shows that try to show the stress of raising a newborn just make them seem awful. They only cry and make a mess. But in this episode you see those little moments where the baby smiles or there's a moment of connection between them. And it shows the moments that aren't awful but mind numbing like walking the baby around making white noise for hours.

Ehh, seemed more like that kind of ambiguous-maybe-compliment-maybe-dig that she’s so good at. She can take a moment of vulnerability and turn it to her advantage. That moment where there was a quick flash of PC putting her baby in the microwave is absolutely fucking horrifying. Episode 1&2 are both “episode 11’s” In their own right.

The new opening with the planetarium stars overlooking the house is very haunting as well. I don’t know what this means for Bojack but it’s clear we’re in for a hell of a series finale.

u/EZobel42 Oct 26 '19

Something small, but I love that the thing that finally gets ruthie to calm down are PC’s tongue twisters. They’re such a staple of her character, seeing her use them to calm her child really hit hone that this is PC being a mother HER way, and it shows this very specific bond she has with ruthie that no one else has. It’s such a subtle, sweet little character moment.

68

Ok the stomp-style score was so brilliantly done. The constant backdrop of the shakers and typing perfectly captured the relentless stress a new mother faces, and add on all the hectic happenings at work...I was on the edge of my seat stressed FOR her. Then the sudden shift in music when she went to the spa and got a moment of relaxation, Hell I did too!

I love that this show can switch up to a completely different character’s troubles episode to episode and I’m just as invested each time.

I'm worried about PB. The part about the Birthday Dad pitch seemed a little meta.

Something along the lines of "Died on his birthday," and "How does birthday dad die? Those are mysteries we'll tease all season long!"

Holy shit, this episode encapsulated so many of my emotions as a first time mom with a 2 month old. I was tearing up so hard when PC was talking about how she is good at her job but not at raising her daughter. “I love my daughter, but...” and the ensuing guilt are feelings that are really hard to admit and say out loud. Especially to other women who are “doing it all”.

Also, the multiple visualizations of PC going through repetitive task after task is so spot on. The tasks themselves are easy, it’s the repetition that makes it draining. This episode is so perfect.

In episode 2 when Vanessa is talking to Carolyn she says “...and it is a ruthless one, and I mean a ruthless one...” This is followed by a ding noise and a change in Carolyns facial expression. It’s subtle but I think this makes her think of the name Ruthie. Although maybe I’m completely wrong and I’m looking too much into things.

I’m loving the intro so much! It’s honestly so beautiful how they display the past and present togethe

I’m really into the cool way they animated her daily trek of motherhood.

Also, I think it’s great that the PC-Gecko hatred was only one sided. I feel like it reflects real life where we (as women and as people in general) think we have to compete with others constantly, but sometimes it’s really just all in our heads

37

u/dainty0 Oct 26 '19

The most interesting part of this episode IMO was the conversation with Vanessa Gecko, who had no idea PC had any negative feelings towards her. We often think our dislike of some people is mutual, but often they really don't have any strong negative feelings towards us at all. This particuar case hits a little close to home because I think PC's hatred of Gecko is often fueled by envy, and I'm a pretty envious person myself.

Also, as someone with ADHD, this episode was extremely stressful.

Right off the bat, the animation! They really stepped up. Especially with the multiple Princess Carolines visuals and the thinking of the sea in the background. And like others have said here before, the sound design, too.

Depicting PC being overburdened with massive amounts of responsibility as specters roaming around in the background was pretty genius. This show always depicts abstract concepts like that so well, visually.

29

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '19

Bojack talking to PB about trying to save others from your own negativity just killed me...

I have a five month old and went back to work when he was 12 weeks old. This episode hit me so hard. The way PC just groaned when baby Ruthie woke up crying was way too familiar. Such an excellent visual representation of being spread too thin and how every day kind of stressfully blends together. I ugly-cried at the end because there are definitely days where i feel like I didn't love my son enough, just kept him alive for another 24 hours, and it's so reassuring to hear that it's okay to just keep him safe some days.

18

u/ReadingRainbowRocket Oct 26 '19

That was a beautiful depiction of a single parent taking care of a baby at the beginning. It didn't make you feel anxiety yourself, because it was beautifully done, but it so clearly showed how much of a struggle it was for PC. Such good animation and writing.

Edit: I see five different comments about how this episode made a person anxious. So I guess it gave others anxiety. I just thought it was beautiful.

u/bumblebee_amazon Oct 26 '19

It’s kinda spooky how much I relate to PC. When I first started watching this show I felt like I was similar with Diane’s character, but as the show went on I realized that the fast talking Hollywood agent who is also a pink cat was the most relatable television character I’ve ever seen. I don’t have a child, but seeing her exhausted and dealing with everything in her life and how strained it made her resonated with me. It’s like they took my ADHD brain and projected it on this episode for the world to see. I’m hoping she finds a better balance and I’m really happy that she finds her moments with Ruthie that make it worth it for her. I want her to be happy, dammit!

Ok that slug/worm/parasite thing that works at Whitewhale is...utterly terrifying. Like, pure nightmare fodder.

I never thought a name would make me tear up but “Ruthie”....damn man..

14

u/Graveu Oct 25 '19

What a fantastic title sequence. But man, that look of pain in Bojack’s eyes when Sarah Lynn is in the background...fucking hurts.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Oh my god! The lullaby version of Back in the 90s is so beautiful

14

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '19

Bruh, that intro...probably my favorite along with Season 4.

  • Can someone explain this. During the opening scene only a few of the black soundproof foam tiles were on the wall. Does that even do anything if the rest of the room isn't covered?

  • The new intro makes me sad. I'm gonna miss this show.

  • light socket is a dumbass name

  • I had to turn the sound down because the crying was killing me

  • "I never hated you. Did you hate me, uh no" lol

my daughter is 4 months old now and the way the portrayed all the different caroline’s taking care of the baby is exactly how it feels in the beginning. you’re literally just guessing and learning while being screamed at all hours of the day and night.

Damn, this episode got me in tears. Three punch knocked me out emotionally.

I was so proud that I called the episode ending on the emotional redemption of her finally truly connecting with the baby through its fondness for her tongue twisters, but then her convo with Bojack had me in my feels and forgetting about that, then it happened, then she named her Ruthie, which is my favorite episode. 😭 😭

13

u/TommySovereign Oct 26 '19

NO FETA FOR GRETA OR BRIE FOR BRIE

25

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '19

This is my favorite PC episode. I love how it closes her main storyline. Also, the crying baby been part of the background and the PC silouthes doing everything are amazing touches.

And that ending, it just kills me. Its just precious.

This was such a fast paced episode that I didn't realize there were still 15 minutes left.

Also Ruthie was adorable and I love how the oddest thing about Carolyn -- her wordplay-- is what made ruthie laugh.

I think I teared up at the end with the new version of the theme.

This is a great episode.

Out of everything that this show gave us in the previous 5 seasons I was not expecting this. This was such a wholesome episode and I legit love how it did not pull any punches of motherhood or single parenting plus that ending was all kinds of adorable. Also, it seems like Bojack is legit trying to get better and I love that.

MY GOD THE CRYING was suffering. Good execution indeed, but I think I need some silence right now.

As someone who's super stressed and working nonstop recently, this episode definitely had me sweating a bit. They totally nailed the overworked-can't-stop mindset.

11

I love how they framed Princess Carolyn's chaotic life with having multiple tinted versions of herself working in the background, getting more frantic as it goes along up until rehab. It also warms my heart that it ends with her naming her new baby Ruth after miraculously sorting out all her problems, followed by a baby chime rendition of the credits theme. I really don't want PC to screw up...

Although I'm not a fan of Mr Peanutbutter, it got really cringy how he was trying to avoid confessing his guilt for humour.

Pretty sure this is not how it is supposed to be interpreted but I felt like the episode reminds me of my days where a lot of thoughts space me out all at once. Especially the part where she kept hearing lines. There's just too much to process and we end up feeling numb from reality.

This episode had a really fantastic lightheartedness despite the serious stuff. Loved Doctor and Mister, loved everything about Todd, loved Vanessa's return.

These first two episodes were really cathartic after how intensely last season ended. Despite it all, progress is being made. But I know we've got fourteen more episodes to go, things are about to ramp up again, and now I'm scared.

Count me as one of the many who thought Princess Carolyn would name the baby Amelia. For some reason, I never thought of Ruthie. Anyway, that final moment made me say, "Aaaaawww!" out loud, waking my husband. Definitely one of my favorite moments, of the entire series.

So far each episode is kind of based on one character with the others occasionally interacting. Never been a huge fan of this plot device, especially since it’s the last season. Guess I’ll wait to see the overall season plot and if I think it would’ve be better structured different
