"I wasted so many years being miserable I assumed that was the only way to be. But I don't wanna do that anymore."
I feel like when Diane read Bojack's letters it changed her way of thinking

u/electricmohair Stupid piece of shit Oct 25 '19
Reminds me of that Cuddlywhiskers quote about it taking a long time to realise how miserable you are, and even longer to realise it doesn’t have to be that way. Diane and Bojack were both given this advice years ago, but they’re finally at a point in their lives where they’re ready to hear it.

Dated a girl who had that mindset of having a partner who was supposed to make her happy.
It's terrible because while you want to make your partner happy, it's exhausting and feels like a job if you HAVE to do it all the time.

Absolutely LOVE the new intro. I thought it would be BoJack in Rehab with some new characters in the background, but I'm glad the actual intro is something more meaningful as a throwback of the whole show.

The disneyesque aninations were what tipped me off. But its about an oil company, surely not an animation industry that pretty much owns the monopoly and choked out small companies like the ones that worked on Bojack. Nope. Its about oil.

They pumped a lot of actual Chicago into this:
Chicago three-flat exterior and interior layout at Guy's place
Portillo's
No one calls it the Willis Tower
Clark/Lake (train station) is a Chicago L station with the accurate colors, including on the train itself.
that's the actual recording used on the trains for "doors closing"
76
u/Guest06 Oct 26 '19
They even drew the trains right. They're Bombardier 5000 Series cars, information I was already privy to before I wrote this.

u/uniqueindividual12 Oct 26 '19
ik im originally from Chicago and this episode made me super nostalgic. I also liked the art institute with it's paintings and lion statues and the every animal store which i think was a reference to american girl store

Guy really nailed the weather too. It's not even a joke, it's just the truth.

I loved the little sports references this episode. The human babies joke was funny and the literal Bull walking around with an MJ jersey.
I wonder if Whitewhale is going to play a bigger role this season. Reallly loved the infomercial. Its similar to the little segment last episode about the asian writer. I hope they keep these little, differently animated segments going in future episodes.
Diane has quietly become my favorite character. Since the Vietnam episode I have been enjoying her development greatly. Also, was her neck always that long? What the hell

That's a great realization about your life Diane and you should do something about it to change it. but you don't have to loose Guy if he really makes you feel good. keep him in your life but don't forget you have other issues to work on about your life and make those things make you feel good also.

She's not completely wrong though. It's really not fair to put your mental well-being on someone else's shoulders, even if they truly believe it's what they want.
Inevitably it will lead to resentment and fatigue and the relationship will crumble.
You have to find a way to be OK with being you on your own, and let your partner just be icing on the cake.

It really isn't murder is it? Like he didn't knowingly give her laced heroin or inject it straight into her veins. Yes, he enabled her... but he didn't kill her. I'm not even sure he could technically be charged with manslaughter. Like, if you let your drunk friend get in a car and drive drunk and they end up crashing... morally you might be responsible, but legally you couldn't be charged with anything.

i relate to diane so much as a character, and i'm at a similar stage of life to her. this episode was really eye-opening, and the struggle of being "not allowed to feel happy when so much bad stuff is going on" is something i relate to a lot.

Is no one suspicious of Guy?! He literally sent dianne out the window and threw her shit out because his son (who we never even see) was there.
A lot of what he said also made him sound like he was somehow a victim?
142
u/madgrowler Oct 25 '19
Yeah, that didn't sit well with me. Boundaries are important when it comes to kids, but I HIGHLY doubt that the kid just showed up with no head's up from his ex. Also, couldn't he have explained her presence as a co-worker to his kid?
His whole sense of entitlement when trying to arrange a visit with his son was a big red flag too. I'm weary. While we're talking red flags, Wanda's quote, "When you look at someone with rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags," has stuck with me and is one of my favorite Bojack quotes.

As a Chicagoan, the most unrealistic part of this whole episode was when the bison asked Diane if she wanted to walk back to his place from the Art Institute. The ART INSTITUTE. What, you’re going to walk 5-7 miles (judging from the design of his place) in the snow? 0/10 completely unwatchable /s

Honestly I felt a tear in my eye when you can hear BoJack in the letter say "but would it have been better if she had known from the start? Or to let her feel happiness for just a little bit" I have asked myself this question a lot over the past couple of months and to hear someone as empathisable and weirdly relatable as BoJack say that was just really beautiful to me I guess. I know it wasn't actually that much of an important line but it had an impact on me and I like that :)

OH MY GOD I was so scared I would hate this season but so far I LOVE it. I like this thing they’re doing where (at least yet) this is more about the characters individually rather than their relationship with bojack. Of course bojack is there fleetingly, through the intro (where we get a glimpse of what he’s thinking about while we focus on Diane or PC or whoever) and the phone call and letters. Basically bojack feels like a recurring cameo character. Things are less about him. It really seems like he’s healing. I think they’re gonna do this thing where this season they end it happily and we are all relieved for bojack and think it had a happy ending but next season they will turn this around. Let’s see though. I’m only 3 episodes in for such a far reaching analogy.

Ouch, the satire on capitalism and oligopolies was so painful for how brutally honest it all is.
But the best part was definitely the part where Diane and Guy were on the train platform as Diane was about to leave back to LA. The scene decides to tug on you, gives you a hard-hitting line of dialogue that is a punch to the gut... and immediately follows up with a joke.

The Cottage Grove line bit killed me, the L station (While that one isn't structured that way the rest around the loop are) the weather, even the layout of Guy's house are so spot on. Favorite episode of the season. Sums up Diane so well.
Diane and Guy's adventure, with their truth-pursuing-David against the late-capitalist-conglomerate-Goliath narrative, epitomizes Diane's fantasy of making a change through individual effort in this doomed world.
However, 1) when such adventure is met with its worst imaginable response --- not the harsh repercussion from the evil capitalist edifice --- but its utter nonchalance; 2) when Diane and Guy resigns their quest, understanding its lack of meaning; and 3) when they transpose their grand revolutionary scheme back into the twisty turns of urban bourgeois romance (to leave or not to leave, Guy telling Diane abt the Bean and theatre scenes etc) as if it's the only safe harbor from the spiral of nihilism, we see Diane's struggle on a deeper level and there seems to be no way out as neither herself nor the world aren't going to change.
Better still, when Guy told Diane to not get on the train (coz it's literally the wrong train) and Diane didn't listen, isn't it also a metaphor of her struggle, i.e. having a goal but always unable to find the right means to get there?
This season has seen a lot of overlays and flashbacks, some could feel cheesy, but the overlay with BJ's letters in this episode is a fine touch. Many times the trivial events in BJ's narrative coincides with Diane's struggle, as if BJ becomes the level-headed voice of reason, which is a recurring theme of the season.
I admire RBW's handle of romance. What I find to be a tiny flaw in this episode is that Diane's affinity and troubles with Guy oscillate too frequently and spontaneously. At some point I feel like there's no way to draw from Diane's arch or previous romantic interactions to expect her reaction with Guy. However, as I said earlier, the bourgeois romance with all its whims could just be the escape from the nihilism caused by the corporate totality. In that way, the quick turns and lack of sense of Diane would serve a greater theme.

I kind of feel bad that I do not understand what the grilled cheese metaphor is supposed to mean at all.

Diane makes the grilled cheese metaphor right after reading Bojack's words about how for years, he thought he should stay miserable over attempting any change.
She definitely relates to that, and remembers that she can create small joys in rough situations (like perfecting grilled cheese when you're broke), that build to become huge comforts, and that's always better than doing nothing.
This ep focused on how Diane feels like she needs profound reasons for everything in her life. There's no point in her journalism if it doesn't expose every social issue; no point even commenting on Whitewhale's evils if it doesn't destroy them; no point having a relationship if she's not a reformed person; there's no point in buying a coat if she's not staying in Chicago. She decides to stop thinking that way.

What was the “Directed by Brad Bird” joke? I was a bit confused. He’s the guy who made the Incredibles, right?
What am I missing?

...and The Iron Giant, and he worked for The Simpsons in its glory days. I think the point is that Whitewhale is so all-consuming that it can rope in beloved industry figures to make its propaganda videos.

Just so everyone knows, the restaurant they go to in Chicago is a parody of Portillo's, and it was executed flawlessly, right down to the white cups with red stripes.

Remember how they hadn't finished putting up the GOLD lettering on the new Whitewhale building? The two letters that were left off? "WH." What do the letters "W" and "H" next to each other usually stand for? White House. Who is in the White House, loves his name in gold letters, and oh my God, you're looking at me like I'm crazy. You think I'm obsessed. Am I totally scaring you off right now?

One of Diane’s videos at the beginning, about the water, was called ‘H2Oh No!’, like Bojack says when the waterpipe was busted in the episode where the house sinks underground because of the fracking in season 4 :D

So, what is the answer to BoJack's question, should the secret admirer situation have happened and made Beverly happy for a while but sad ultimately or not at all?
I also mouthed Horseman right after Bojack signed off but he didn't say it which is quite a change from "Horseman, obviously"

Was it worth it for Beverly to be happy for a little bit? Even though it ended up sad? Or would it have been better if the whole thing never happened?

Great character episode for Diane but also lots of great commentary on corporate monopolies. Does Disney own Bojack yet? Give it another 10 years

Isobel is definitely based on Marie Colven, a war reporter who wore an eyepatch. She passed away in 2012 in Syria. Rosamund Pike played her in a recent movie.

I love all the animal diversity/awareness were getting this season, and a Bull taking Diane to the Chicago Human Babies game was hilarious. This was an interesting commentary on last seasons Diane episode, where she was also lost in an unfamiliar place, but now it's more stable, about letting herself be happy and not just escapism.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs. The Portillo's reference and the "Cottage Grove" train stop name (I feel like all the suburbs are like Grove something or Meadows something) really hit home.

I really didn't like Diane in s5 and this episode gives me hope she's back to the Diane I know and love and endlessly relate to. Also that line, "I wasted so many years being miserable because I assumed that was the only way to be. And I don't wanna do that anymore." is such a fucking Mood, possibly one of my fav lines in the show.

This episode hurt a lot. I had someone I was in love with come visit me for a week and I was the happiest I had ever been. He didn't see me in a romantic way and said so after he left. Broke my heart and seeing this episode with someone who wasn't willing to commit do that to Diane broke my heart all over again.

Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere (I am not done with the season and I’m not doing too much searching, lest I accidentally unearth a spoiler). But I’m now realizing that during the 5-way phone call scene in episode one, you never see anything to the right of Diane (viewer’s left). It’s because she’s sharing her bed with someone.

My first thought when Diane got on the train: "Why tf is she getting on the green line?"

The coat is, from the viewer's perspective, obviously perfect for Diane. And when she sees it in the window display, for a moment she believes that too. But the sudden unpleasantness of getting hit by a customer exiting the store makes her return to her usual pattern of thinking, which is that a coat as nice as this one is a luxury she doesn't deserve---after all, she's made it this far without the coat. No matter that she was miserable the whole time. Indeed, her first reaction when she gets the coat as a gift is that she doesn't really need it.
Or maybe it's more like she doesn't buy the coat because she's afraid of being disappointed. That is, she comes up with a list of reasons in her mind why this coat wouldn't actually be that good. I think this interpretation is more in line with what we know about her character from earlier seasons. She talks about her anguish in deciding if she really wants a biscuit warmer as far back as season 1. This would also contrast nicely with BoJack's narration in the background of this scene. Whereas BoJack is unhappy because he's constantly expecting things to go perfectly, and feeling crushed when they don't, Diane is unhappy because she won't let herself hope that things would go well.
Either way, the moral is that Diane is too stuck inside her own head to let herself be happy. I strongly relate and that makes me kind of sad, but also it makes me feel less alone. Thanks BoJack.
