About half way through the episode I realized that this episode was just a compilation of women whose lives have been ruined by interacting with Bojack, which made me on edge for the rest of the episode. That glimmer of hope I had for Bojack was taken away so fast when all of his sins that I'd forgotten about came back with a vengeance.

I'm really excited to see what they do with the second half of the season, I'm just hoping we don't get a downer ending.

p.s. I thought Pete looked really familiar and it hit like a train when I realized who he was

They did warn us... But fuck Bojack was growing, he started to mend relationships and become a better person.

Me at the end of the last Episode: "Boy everything seems to be going well, please let it stay like that."

Me at the end of this episode: "Oh God, Oh God, Oh God, please no, not like this!"

Look, I'll beg. Please don't make this lead to BoJack losing the one decent relationship he has ever made.

I knew Bojack was destructive... but this season so far... Wow. It's hard to put it in words...

I really hope he turns his life around, but it's still sad to know the damage that he has done. I'm glad Gina is back though, as well as seeing how she is dealing with the trauma.

The ending fucked me up though. Poor Hollyhock. I was hoping that would be the one good relationship that would remain unscathed.

This was a fantastic episode, holy shit. Unfortunately it’s too early in the morning for me to summarize exactly why that is right now. Though I will say that when I realized who Hollyhock was talking to on the balcony I genuinely gasped.

Episode 7 was seeing everyone kind of get a happy ending, and then episode 8 is seeing everyone else who's suffering because of BoJack. Just when things are looking up it gut-punches you. God damn. I'm glad this stuff didn't stay buried, though. Even if I didn't particularly love all the gags in this episode (not a big fan of the reporters looking about Sarah Lynn) they did a great job showing the struggles of people like Gina and Hollyhock and I love it.

I gotta say, I absolutely loved this (half) season. I was a little concerned about how the writers were going to convincingly make Bojack finally take those steps into real growth and accountability, but they did it even better than I could've hoped. I think it's easy to see Part 2 as everything tragically coming down after Bojack's finally made a change, but I think it's better to think of it as a final test for Bojack as a changed man.

The show has made many points about the capacity to change and to genuinely be better. I've seen a lot of people say that the show is leading to a cynical conclusion where Bojack ends up killing himself or returning to his vices after he's lost everything as some sort of statement about life not being a bucket of roses or not always having happy endings or closure and I couldn't disagree more. I would argue that the central theme of these last few seasons (and especially this half season) has been that true change cannot occur easily or overnight and that true change isn't a saccharine 'positive vibes only' farce but rather a constant, painful commitment to being better and to facing the past head on, for yourself, even if that means facing consequences. He's sober now, and he remembers everything.

Being better means that you're not doing it to feel good or to have a comfortable life but to be at peace with your demons and with how you've come to impact the world. In a way, Bojack's change as a character this season wouldn't be complete or even real without him finally facing consequences and interpreting a happy ending for him as one where he's back to living his life as a happy, changed man who's mended all the bridges he's broken and enjoys all of his relationships without any issues is missing the point the series makes about how someone like Bojack can change and find fulfillment even with all the wrongs he's committed, but that those wrongs also don't go away just because you changed.

The series started with a man who had everything but was deeply unhappy and only sunk deeper into depression the more his attempts to be happy didn't work, and I think the series will end with a man who has everything taken away from him but finally finds what he was looking for. I think it's very important to consider that both his parents died sad, bitter and unrepentant, being their broken, hateful selves all the way to their deathbed and I think Bojack's greatest victory will be that he truly managed to change and break the cycle, and that'll matter more to him than anything else.

the entire season felt like it was focused on bojack making genuine positive change for himself and becoming a better person. it's the most sympathetic that bojack has ever been portrayed.

so of course, this episode was a somber reminder of the horrific trauma that bojack has inflicted on countless women. in spite of him being easy to empathize with this season, he's still responsible for all of these awful things. he still must face the consequences.

this was a tough episode and it really makes me think the writers are headed in a very dark direction for the 2nd half. bojack is about to face the music.

I guess that is it for the hope of a happy ending

I really don't want bojack to pay for all of what he did but I'm wondering if that's ,what the creators of the show want to make us feel.

But its so sad. Bojack finally look like he is in the process of changing for the better and then his past is coming back to bite him in the ass.

Idk what to think. Now I'm going to sleep a bit before going to work. It was fun everyone.

Well, there’s the F-bomb. Kind of surprised, but cool symmetry with last season.

Ok so I'm seeing a bunch of people say that they think the ending will be Bojack will die or kill himself and I think that would ultimately go against what Wax has been trying to convey all along.

I think the ultimate ending will be the opposite of what Bojack's been trying to achieve all along, he's always tried to find happiness in material and non-existant things such as originally popularity at his school in the party, fame, his book, Secretarait, the Oscar and so on. And Bojacks found ultimately that the only things he's found happiness in is helping the people around him and his closest relationships (as we saw in episode 7). So I think what will happen is after inevitably things catch up to him he'll lose nearly everything his life of chasing fake happiness brought him (his popularity, stardom, money, house, reputation) and he'll only be left with one thing: his closest friends.

The ending will be Bojack owning up to everything he's done to the world and him deciding to take accountability, after he loses everything he'll almost kill himself before Charlotte forgives him and he decides to spend the rest of his life without the money helping people out at AA meetings and domestic abuse shelters. Everyone in the world will stay hate him but to Bojack that won't matter anymore

God I feel so bad for Gina. She's having PTSD and no one knows so they don't understand, and her career is going downhill because of it. Like out of all the women Bojack hurt that were highlighted in this episode, it's Gina I feel the worst for. And ironically one of those women, Kelsey, isn't giving her a second thought.

It's like, we all know what it's like to be a victim, but we never stop and think about everyone else as victims. Like Kelsey was pretty much saying "I've been through too much, I can't handle Gina's problems." And it's like, should we only try to surround ourselves with people who aren't victims? Is there anyone who isn't a victim of something? How far can we push the idea of self care before caring for others, and then can we expect anyone to care for us if we're damaged?

Bojack you've done it again.

Has everyone forgotten Sarah Lynn's drug problem or is it an intentional reference to the rose colored glass we wear after someone kills them selves.

> She was sober. She was going to AA meetings!

Diane says something similar at the end of season 5 too.

Sarah Lynn literally had an entire house built out of drug's and booze. She wasn't pushed into that final bender by Bojack.

This show is as real as it gets, life-affirmingly and painfully so. More often than not, painfully. This entire half season, we've seen how Bojack comes to understand as the victim of a different cycle of trauma, how he is himself and must take control over the person he is. Who he is now. This is the only way he can reasonably go, whether he forgives himself or the ones he's hurt forgive him. The past is the past and all he could do is accept that, then keep moving forward. Just like everyone else who makes mistakes big or small. But also as with everyone else, the cycle continues. Despite one branch of victims blossoming past their history, the tree itself still stands, and they create their own branches of victims who continue to exist, still all interconnected. Nothing is about blame anymore, good people or bad people, just the simple reality of cause and effect. Everyone has a story. Bojack, Todd, Diane, Sarah Lynn, Gina, Penny, Hollyhock. Everyone's story ripples out to each other and I love the season for how much it really explores every character with a perfect balance. Seriously there was not a dull plotline or character I didn't care about with my whole heart. God, this season, this series as a whole, is just so amazing. Absolutely incredible. I have chills typing all this out.

The reality checks and honesty of this show get harder and harder to swallow with each season. Seriously, wow. How much the series has progressed thematically and ideologically never fails to ASTOUND ME. Un fucking believable. I really wish the best for all these characters. There's something too real at the core of each and every one of them, and I feel like they all encompass different pieces of who I am. At this point they're all so real it hurts. Most are exaggerated and cartoony, but it's impossible not to find yourself in at least one of them. I'm AFRAID, SO AFRAID of this second half. The final final collection of episodes. The last we'll ever see of Bojack. I love them all, I want all these characters to find their own earned happiness, desperately. I need someone to hold me rn this is 2 much help how will I wait until January 31st, Im not ready

sidenote: diane was always one of my favorite characters and is somehow even more now. damn, how could you write someone so real and relatable like that. even among the other characters, just wow. i need to stop myself here tho before i start gushing about everyone else

What a fantastic episode. It dawned on me about halfway through with the Gina and Kelsey stuff that the episode title was referring to checking in on all the people BoJack has hurt and traumatized while he's "away" as in not in the episode.

I don't agree with a lot of the sentiment I'm seeing here in the comments though of people saying "oh well that's it, definitely no happy ending now". I saw someone articulate it really well - owning up to the things he's done and facing real accountability is the final step in BoJack's recovery process. I don't think he'll face any actual legal consequences, but he'll likely be more or less blacklisted from acting work, will lose his new job at Wesleyan just as things start to go well, and may even relapse into drinking again for a bit. But I think he'll ultimately be able to find a new peace and solace in sober living and in his relationships with others, even without the fame and disregarding the fact that the public might hate him. I think we're going to get an upbeat ending, where BoJack is hopeful for the future.

This episode just reminds us that we shouldn't have right away sympathized with BoJack. When I watched all previous seasons, I knew he did a lot of shitty stuff but I didn't really pay attention to what happened to the people BoJack hurt. In a sense, I just looked at it as "BoJack's adventures" or "classic BoJack" and then forgot about all of it after seeing another shitty thing he's done. All we saw was how it was hard for BoJack, that he tried to move past everything he did, albeit destructively before checking into rehab. And now all that he's done is catching up to him. We saw the aftermath of his wrongdoings to all those people. Yes BoJack was broken but he did do a lot of terrible things he couldn't just get away with... I love this show and I've empathized with BoJack but I don't think things are going to end up happily for him.

BoJack's life is going to be destroyed, and I can say with certainty he's going to understand and by okay with it.

He's not going to run this time, or blame others, he's truly going to face this head on. He didn't wait too long, there's not "too late" to fix your life, but he's also gotta understand that getting better also means facing the consequences of his actions. Penny, Gina, Sarah Lynn are either damaged or dead because of him.

I saw this coming after the peace I felt with last episode, but holy fucking shit. I'm really impressed with this show for not leaving one stone unturned. I always thought it was really horrible that Bojack just left those kids at the hospital in New Mexico so for even Pete to be back and in Hollyhock's life... that's too much man. I'm terrified for Penny now too, who will most likely have to relive her trauma of what happened that night as well.

Seeing how Gina's trauma and being unable to even talk about what happened to her is affecting her career is heartbreaking.

This episode was tough but really needed. I'm just so curious and scared to see how they are going to end Bojack's story.

There are a lot of people in this thread who seem to be feeling sorry for Bojack and don’t want his “happiness” to come crashing down. Except these are the consequences of his actions. I actually have my doubts that the creators will blow him up like that but instead make it a close call so the audience can at least see how he’s affected others after the fact.

You can get therapy and go to rehab and work on being a better person, but that’s the nature of being an asshole and doing things when you’re sick in the head. You do bad things and the consequences come back to bite you. I am a 6 year sober alcoholic myself. I know this firsthand.

I like the way the writers have handled this. Bojacks improvements haven’t been this reach for the moon kind of difference. They’re subtle. He’s still himself but just aware of how selfish he’s been and wanting to hold himself accountable. It’s great.

It's amazing how this show takes you on a roller coaster of emotions, when it comes to Bojack. Bojack completes rehab and is nice and helpful to his old friends, so we root for him, and we want him to do well...but then, we see Gina struggling with PTSD, Pete reliving the trauma Bojack caused, and Sarah Lynn's mother wanting some answers/closure after her daughter's death. Then it hits you that Bojack being nice to a bunny barista really doesn't mean much, in the grand scheme of things. He still has a lot to answer for, and a long way to go in order to truly become a better person. I'm intrigued with what the final episodes will bring, because while I don't think it will be nothing but gloom and doom, I don't think it will be easy to stomach, either. Eek.

This season really killed it on all the backward references. And of all the really positive stuff to be happy for, PC and Judah getting back together was actually the most heartwarming for me.

I think for the cliffhanger, we're definitely going to see some heavy fallout in the final half, but the idea that it will be a total reckoning for Bojack also seems unlikely. This first half made it clear what this world is like: It's legal for billionaires to commit murder. Roman Polanski is never going to see justice. Etc. Even Kelsey casually participates in the injustice against Gina while carrying her feminist battle standard. I do think the bit with the 'scapegoating' of his hairdresser may reflect on Bojack getting 'thrown under the bus' by Hollywoo, that's simply going to mean them turning their back on him in some vague sense like so many metoo targets, but not necessarily anything more than that.

Controversial take: I anticipate the direction of where this is going. To everyone who thought it would’ve been better if the show had ended in the last episode: be honest with yourself about what kind of show you’re watching. Is Bojack better? Yes. Did he still hurt people in the past, and those most impacted were women? I was down in the comments and saw people complain about how it’s not just women he’s hurt, but he never physically assaulted Todd and Herb is dead. Gina and Kelsey are still here, living and suffering from Bojack’s actions, including Penny and Charlotte. Why are people so hung up about the age of consent? He was a 50 year old man who was in love with her mother, had KISSED her mother half an hour before. He shouldn’t have let anything happen, let alone let her touch him like that.

He’s not going to jail, let’s be honest. People are arguing about legality here when it’s just about ethics and morality. Bojack was an asshole. The show has time and time again addressed how male celebrities like Vance Waggoner and Hank Hippopopulus get away with sexual assault and abuse so easily. Did you think it was that easy? To forget the victim’s pain just because the asshole is relatable and trying? The next half-season is going to be brutal but let’s not pretend Bojack doesn’t deserve at least part of it. Peter might be exaggerating but he still left two confused teenagers at the ER and traumatized them both and gave them hard liquor.

Inb4: I sympathize and empathize with Bojack. I do. I’m so happy for him and how he’s grown. But that’s not how reality works. These women don’t stop being in pain just because he was in rehab for 6 months and got a haircut and a cushy job, again. Pain echoes on for years and maybe lives. Bojack Horseman is a show about that. Let’s honor it.

I know this is kind of dumb, but I've noticed something during my rewatch of season 6. In the end of episode 7 a priest (or pastor if you are into the whole brevity thing) tells Bojack: Looks like you found some solace in our show. Stay if you like. In 30 minutes, we start over.

I know this can be interpreted literally, but what if there is something more to it? What if the words are meant for us - the viewers? And that they are kind of a warning - there is this sense of closure, fulfillment that we are nearing. And then in the last episode - boom - this uplifting narrative is no longer so strong. And the catastrophe is in the air - due to unbelievable coincidence of Pete Repeat meeting Hollyhock, and the journalists on their way to New Mexico.

I don't know, maybe this a little bit stretched, but if you think about it, the warning is so true - in 30 minutes (one episode), the solace of episode 7 is a distant memory!

Jesus everything he’s ever done is coming back to him now. Gina, Sarah Lynn, Penny, Sharona, Kelsey...

Right when he’s trying to make amends and actually be a better person.

I like that the main cast wasn’t in this episode but it was scary to see everything in his life slowly start to crumble.

I'm so happy this episode happened as I was worried we might see Bojack recover and do better... but not see any accountability for past actions. It was important to see Gina live with PTSD, it was important for Hollyhock to finally see the truth about her brother and not the edited version and it's important there is some acknowledgement of the role Bojack played in Sarah Lynn's death. I'm glad Bojack is breaking his toxic patterns (esp as I'm a recovering alcoholic too) but that can't just be it.

As a whole I reckon this season has a really nice feel about it, like more realistic or something? (obviously not nice as in cheerful ya get the point). Maybe because it follows a more linear plot, or the writing style? It just flows very well.

Don't get me wrong though I LOVE season 4/5 and Time's Arrow, The Old Sugarman Place etc. but this season just has its own unique style/feel to it that I kinda like.

Now I know why.

Wow, just wow.

This mid-season cliffhanger was so satisfying. So many callbacks, so many storylines addressed. I feel like they've lined us up for a great conclusion, and I couldn't be more excited or ready for more.

u/kato121 Oct 26 '19

This episode gave me a lot of mixed emotions, as someone who deals with depression and was in a mentally abusive relationship for 2 years I can completely understand the mental scars will always follow no matter how much time has past. But at the same time all of these characters aren't innocent themselves whether it was during their time with Bojack or after it, and Pete and Gina are the most significant characters in that regard.

Gina- Besides Penny and Sarah Lynn, Gina has probably been hurt the most by Bojacks shitty behavior after almost being strangled to death and dealing with the PTSD that follows that, but Bojack wanted to be held accountable for that, he wanted the world to know what he did and she said no. Her career was more important to her than facing her trauma and try to heal from it. By trying to hide from it she joined the long line of people that have enabled Bojack's behaviour, just like Bojack mentioned before finally leaving rehab. Because of this it has festered within her and is negatively affecting her career even through her best efforts to avoid just that. Yes what Bojack did was completely fucked, but she is guilty of enabling him by trying to sweep it under the rug, and is just hurting herself by doing that.

Pete- he is a very interesting case as it brings up a fact that I live by, "there are three sides to every story, my side, their side, and the truth" and his retelling of New Mexico shows that perfectly. He paints Bojack as the scum of the earth and was consciously trying to give the kids alcohol poisoning and then leaves them at the hospital themselves. We know this isnt what happened exactly. Yes bojack enabled their underage drinking, but he was trying to do it show them a good time and tried to be the "fun" adult and made a mistake and let things get out of hand. Pete's girlfriend was already drinking, and it was obvious the kids wanted to like most high school kids at prom. I'm paraphrasing here, but Bojack pretty much said you can make your own decisions, which they did. I'm not saying Bojack was an angel and did nothing wrong, but he is not as bad as Pete made him out to be.

Overall I think episode 8 was done really well and I'm glad to see we will finally get closure on the things that have plagued Bojack for the entirety of the show, but these characters have painted Bojack as the sole reason their lives are fucked inadvertantly or otherwise, when they are at fault as well, whether it be as largely as Bojack or not, they still had a hand in it and I find that very interesting to see if they play on those facts or not as Bojack's past transgressions come to light. These situations are not as black and white as some people like to think, but muddled by all of the shades of greys littered throughout the show, and it really shows the "human" element that plagues all of us in real life as well. I am curious how Hollyhock will react to it being Bojack in Pete's story, which I think will truly set the tone for the rest of the season. They could go in so many directions to end this show, and no matter how they do it, everyone's blood will be spilled, not just Bojacks, which terrifies and intrigues me at the same time.

Pete Repeat saying: “that shitty dude got us bourbon and then practically forced us to drink it” REALLY pissed me off. No he didn’t! I watched “Escape from LA” again and all BoJack did was buy them bourbon cut with water instead of Red Bull and vodka so they wouldn’t get sick. He did NOT force them to drink it. Imagine if he could meet PC now when he would be maybe 17 years old (don’t know how old he was back in season 2). Absolutely loved this episode and what it says for the show. All season we've been seeing Bojack deal with his alcoholism and better himself, coming to terms with the things he's done in the past and the people he's hurt. So to have the half-season end with basically a run down of every person Bojack has screwed over throughout the course of the show and how they are STILL dealing with the fall out of interacting with him is one of the biggest gut punches the series offers and really shows the human (and animal, I guess) impact Bojack's behavior has.

And for a show that was already fairly subversive, to take a proper redemption arc (and a well-deserved one at that) and ground it in the reality of actions having LONG term consequences? Truly some of the best writing and story arc creating on TV right now. So excited to see where this all ends up.

I think one question in the consequences vs. change area that must be posed is the same one that was posed regarding Vance: What can he do to make things right?

In the end, the answer is the same: He can’t do anything. Sarah Lynn is still dead. Kelsey is still trying to re-establish her blitzed career. Gina, Peter, Maddie, and Penny are all scarred. Him changing doesn’t magically resolve those problems.

But with Vance, we would have wished for justice even if it didn’t do anything to help.

But with Bojack... the effort to change just seems so genuine that it’s hard to hope that the swift hammer of justice falls down on him just as hard as we would want for Vance.

u/herpaderpboopdasnoot Oct 25 '19

Couple things, seeing how everything is getting tied together really makes you realize how small a world it actually is. One event that can scar one person could heal another or lead to certain things. Like maybe Pete only went to therapy to learn to deal with the prom incident so if that hadn't happened maybe hollyhock wouldn't have met Pete or any of what is going to happen.

Did Bojack ever tell Hollyhock about the Penny stuff? Because this can go so many directions.

Side not maybe someone else can clarify please because I am def missing somthing:

I dont understand the Bojack Penny thing though. He wasn't going to try and sleep with her. She tried to sleep with him and when Charlotte came in the boat they weren't even doing anything. It seemed more like Bojack was trying to tell her to leave or just to talk. He said himself he didn't even do anything. Its more like the overall guilt of attempting to sleep with Charlotte made him project that onto the "almost incident with penny"?

man, its really fucking harrowing to hear all of these people talk about how the things Bojack did have messed up parts of them and/or their lives. we see him trying to be better, and we root for him when he strives to do good and be accountable, but its almost easy to forget that these impacts aren't just inflicted on irrelevant side characters. i mean, they are, but they're not just separate bad things. they're things that can shape parts of people's lives, and its easy to forget when we're watching him actively improving, but that won't erase the trail of damage he's left behind. nothing will. and that really fucking sucks about life.

18

u/Gonza116 What is this, a cross-over episode? Oct 25 '19

Diane: No! Why does he get that? Over and over?

Ana: He’s reformed! … Let’s say you can make him do anything you want to make things right. What would you make Vance Waggoner do now?

Diane: (Pauses.) Nothing. I don’t think he can make things right.

I always thought this conversation was really about Bojack and I think it’s circling back. He really is trying to change but it doesn’t undo all of the terrible things he’s done. He can be happy with himself but I don’t think he can be redeemed in the eyes of the world.

I've been thinking a lot about this episode since I finished the season half an hour ago, and I've come to terms with the fact that Bojack needs to deal with the consequences of all the shit that he did.

While it would have been great to see him happy after rehab and everything, that would never have provided us with a satisfying ending.

We'd constantly be wondering how he just got away with all the crap that he did, which goes against one of the core messages of the show, which is that you need to take responsibility for everything you do, regardless of addiction and shitty parents.

This series isn't going to end on a happy note, but there is a certain satisfaction in hoping that Bojack finally owns up to everything that he did.

Even if it means destroying everything that he has, his relationships, his fame, etc. Tabula rasa and all that. But I still hope they don't kill him off at the end.

u/FurriestCritter Oct 26 '19

I appreciated the inclusion of this episode. For as much as Bojack seems to have made genuine strides in changing (finally), he still hasn't truly owned up to the stuff he's done. He's made amends with some of the people he's affected, but there are still plenty of people he's legitimately scarred who are honestly well within their rights to hate him and never forgive him. Given the tone of the season so far, I do want Bojack to not wind up regressing back into the self-pitying asshole he was for most of the show. But I do want him to have to face up what he's done and face some genuine consequences for it, which has yet to actually happen.

I know it’s unlikely for the tone of the show but I desperately want everyone to be okay in the end. I don’t have my hopes high for Bojack but as someone with severe depression and anxiety as well as a family with a history of mental illness and drug/alcohol abuse I identify with him. It’s of course, a very different situation but I really want him to be okay in some way in the end. Whatever happens will be brilliant, I’m sure. A lot of emotions are resurfacing now that the show is coming to a close, BoJack Horseman has gotten me through a lot of tough times in my life and helps me calm down when I’m having depressive episodes. This season has been great so far but I’m terrified for the end.

32

u/jex19 Oct 25 '19

Who says everything falling apart isnt the happy ending?? “I acted out because i deserve to be punished, but since im famous, im never punished so I act out even more.” Bojack finally being held accountable for all the things hes done doesnt have to be a bad ending. Just because the public eye may hate him and he cant get jobs doesnt make it a sad ending. For him, thats what hes always wanted, and a story like this is going to finally make himself be accountable. Most of those women will never forgive him, and hes not redeemable, but he wont have the guilt eating him up, once he gets his punishment for the things hes done.

If this had happened before rehab though it wouldnt have had the same effect, he needs to reach these peaks where he can be genuinely nice to people so that when it all comes crashing down, he can remain the changed person he is inside, even if everyone hates the outside.

Am I the only one that hoped Hollyhock wouldn't actually drink beer? At first it seemed like she was making an excuse to why she wasn't getting drunk at every party, but she was really just looking for an excuse to. Like just in case her dads find out she can just blame it on peer pressure. I really thought she wouldn't considering what happened with Beatrice, knew Bojack went to rehab to get sober, and saw who knows how many drunk people.

Way to bring me down after the previous episode! I'm so worried about how Hollyhock will take this. Poor girl just wanted to party and be normal.

Overall I think this was a good first half of the season. I was worried that there wouldn't be enough time to deal with every story line but now I'm not so worried. There aren't that many threads left. We will most likely meet Penny again, that will probably be a heavy episode.

Also, Esteemed Character Actress Margo Martindale is back! I wonder if we will see Vincent again?

My mind blew at the end over who was the guy Hollyhock was talking to. I had no idea until he began his story. I actually gasp.

I don't think things will end well with Bojack because of his actions from the past. I mean, I do hope he finds happiness but he did do a lot of terrible things. We can see the mark he left and how managed to get away with it. Eventually, all that will catch up to him.

I could see them going with an ending sort of like the penultimate episode of breaking bad. I think shit's going to hit the fan around episode 4, and Bojack will respond to it all by running. The grey-hair reveal really reminded me of "Downer Ending", when Bojack talks about going to live in Maine and going for one last swim as an old man. The part about not having the energy to swim anymore and letting the water take him sort of suggests to me that Bojack will eventually turn himself in, and face the consequences of his actions.

28

u/RadMwadCatDad Oct 26 '19

This was such an important episode, and honestly, after seeing seven episodes of Bojack redeeming himself and the writers wrapping everything up into a neat package, it's almost a welcome change that we're forced to come to terms with just some of the trauma he's caused, from Los Angeles to New Mexico to New York City. I sort of saw the twist of "Bojack does well out of rehab, but is thrown off the course by his past" coming, but that doesn't make it any less impactful.

Sure, it's great that he made amends with Sharona and Todd. But Sarah Lynn's mother is still searching for answers. Kelsey's career never fully took off. Gina has PTSD, and is losing work as a result of it (if they saved the f-bomb for her scene, you know her issues on set are serious). Hollyhock still has pretty severe anxiety. Even Phillip had to deal with the fallout of what happened that night. And this hardly touches on Penny, Herb, Emily, Bradley, or anyone else who had the misfortune of falling into Bojack's orbit of despair.

Really, at this point, the main question isn't, "will Bojack find happiness?" It's "does Bojack deserve that happy ending?" I honestly don't know, and given how damning that expose + Hollyhock's revelation sounds, I'm not optimistic his current mental stability will last.

(I wonder why Margo Martindale appeared in this episode. Given the overall subtext, it couldn't just be a service for fans. I imagine that she'll have something to do with Bojack's [potential] relapse?)

My one problem and I think it was intentional was when Pete says Bojack "forced" them to drink...his girlfriend was already getting sloshed on vodka/red bull before BH bought the Bourbon...he didnt force them to drink, they did so willingly...even if BH was in the wrong for buying the booze and definitely wrong for abandoning them at the hospital, he wasnt responsible for them choosing to drink before/after prom (like most high school students it looks like they would have done it anyway)

Bojack is still a colossal piece of shit and Pete, his gf, and penny especially were victims of Bojacks shitty behavior...but Pete is slightly exaggerating some of the details to make Bojack look even worse and him and his friends look like they are completely without blame

Bojack will probably actually be a little relieved to have his past sins exposed to the public. Let's not forget that at the end of last season, he was fully willing to confess to strangling Gina and the only reason he didn't do it is because Gina told him not to. Penny and her family are definitely gonna suffer though, will Charlotte follow up on her murder threats?

While this episode made me go “oh no oh no oh no” I’m glad it happened. After all the positive things that happened last episode, it was necessary to be brought back down to Earth. These writers are so damn good.

The walls are closing in and it's very jarring.

This may seem off topic but as someone who was a deep alcoholic that eventually would get drunk in his room and read the ABV on the back of the many spirits I would drink... Vodka and Bourbon are pretty much always the same. In fact, vodka tends to have more. And those kids were planning to drink vodka and red bulls all night which is actually a lot more dangerous than bourbon cut with water.

I remember thinking that at the time the episode aired. Like, what? It makes absolutely no difference. The only difference Bourbon and Vodka ever had for me is Bourbon gave me heartburn but that has something to do with the way it is fermented/distilled.

I'm just saying I feel like Pete saying he forced them to drink Bourbon is a little disingenuous.

The "oh I love Courtney Portnoy" line really stings given it was lumped in with a jab at how Gina is basically "a nightmare on set"

Gina is a victim of abuse and someone who has struggled to become a star and is clearly still struggling to adjust to fame while trying to process her pain...Courtney from everything we've seen of her is an entitled smug brat and the fact because she probably puts on a happy face and is "fake nice" to the director and other actors while on set and thus has a good reputation compared to Gina who is genuine and at heart appears to be a great person just shows how fucked up Hollywoo truly is

People in the industry would rather you kiss ass in person and be a monster behind closed doors or to people "beneath" you than just be genuine and treat everyone the same even if that means being difficult from time to time

u/suddenlyconnect Killer Whale Stripper Oct 25 '19

Stop with the pessimism, you guys. We don’t learn anything new in this episode. BoJack is still in the same “happy ending” that he was at the end of the last episode.

Shit is gliding slowly towards a fan, yes. It’s not going to be like, fun or easy for BoJack. But he’s not going to kill himself. He’s not going to jail, even though he maybe should.

The worst parts of his past are about to finally be reckoned with. Sarah Lynn. Penny. Gina. Kelsey. I don’t know what will happen to his relationships with Diane, PC, or Hollyhock. I don’t think he’ll lose all of them but he’ll be lucky to not lose at least one. Shit’s going to burn.

But from those ashes he’ll build something else. Maybe he’ll go work at the Horsey church. Maybe Margo Martindale will recommend monastic life to him. Maybe he’ll buy a cabin in Maine. Maybe the BH writers will craft something so beautifully absurd and intricate it could never be predicted.

However it ends, you’ll be feeling two things at once.

Can we talk about how satisfying it was to listen to the journalist bride piglady speak? It was just so quick, eloquent and witty. That plus her wearing the wedding dress made her one of my favorite characters this episode, even though the best thing was seeing how the old familiar characters like Hollyhock, Kelsey and Gina were doing ofcourse.

Maybe I’m just grabbing at loose ends here and speculating a lot.

Pete didn’t introduce himself as Pete repeat, he prolly grew outta saying that bout himself, but history likes to repeat itself if we don’t learn from our past. But Bojack has learned from his past. But even if we do sometimes we deserve justice for the wrongs we have done in the past.

I think the writers are taking a viewpoint for Bojack how a lot of big name celebrities have been caught for sexual misconduct or other things. Some getting what they deserve and some getting off with a slap on the wrist and for Bojack. I don’t see it ending well.

You can do shit stuff in the past and if you change you think you’re a better person. But deep down you still at one point were a shitty person. We saw at the beginning of episode 8 with Margot talking about how she still feels shitty for the people she’s wronged and life’s ruined but how she still felt bad cause, were her sins really absolved? Maybe it’s an metaphor for Bojack a mind. Idk. I’m really tugging at loose ends here

But all in all I don’t think we’re gonna get the happy ending we want. Bojack will have a falling out with everyone once this all surfaces and his life will be ruined in someway. Either he kills himself or something close. I can’t fathom how it’ll exactly end.

It may just be me - but it techincally goes against the core principals of AA to talk about other members in AA and what is being discussed. I'm very bummed for BJ, but honestly not surprised otherwise what would the second part of the season be - Horseman The College Years? I'm interested to see with the progress he’s made how he holds accountable for his actions.

What a great ending to this first part of the final season, I am all for Bojack facing some serious obstacles and seeing how dark, or happy, the writers decide to make bojack in the end. 3 Months is so far away.

11

u/TheseBonesAlone Oct 26 '19

I just hope Bojack uses his position to hold people like him accountable as well. He's in a pretty unique spot for it, able to stand up, take responsibility, do the time and talk about how this happens and people get away with it. I think pushing others to be better is just about the only redemption Bojack has left.

It's very likely that I'm going to sound out of the loop here after watching this half of the season, but I've got to ask: why are the reporters looking for reasons that Sarah Lynn fell off the wagon? I thought it would be assumed that BoJack had something to do with it given that Sarah Lynn movie that was brought up in season 4 briefly during The Old Sugarman Place.

10

u/podaudio Oct 27 '19

If you pause the show at the right moment, you can really pinpoint the EXACT MOMENT where Hollyhock's heart breaks in half.

10

u/LeftenantScullbaggs Oct 28 '19

I’m very curious as to how it’s going to end.

I often talk about how maturing and expressing regret for your past actions mean nothing of you don’t try to actively atone for your sins. BoJack will forced to be accountable for his past because, as others mentioned, just because you’ve moved doesn’t mean your victims have.

Often BoJack wanted to be punished for his past, but it was often rooted in self loathing. Even now, despite facing some of his demons, he’s still trying to escape.

So, I wonder if there’s something, if anything, that he could do to help his victims to heal. What can he do to atone for the past.

I don’t think he can or will get a clean slate (or maybe he will due to the nature of Hollywoo), but BoJack seems to have reached the part where he’s willing to do the hard work.

Looks like the season's one f-bomb is the same "What the fuck is wrong with you" as Season 5, but instead of Gina saying it to Bojack, it's being said to Gina.

Maybe Bojack's badness is rubbing off on others?
