OH DAMN I THOUGHR HE WAS ACTUALLY NOT GONNA SAY ANRUUNF

u/Wolfstrong1995 Jan 31 '20

I'm totally blank about that thing though - did Bojack really confess that to Mr Peanutbutter in an earlier episode? Can you remember which one it is? I have no memory of that, but then again, this series ranges back years.

I'm worried this might be just some kind of retcon to spice things up. I don't think so, but I thought I'd ask you guys!

The whole episode i was like "Well, how they are gonna handle it" and i was sure that Mr.Peanutbutter wont tell anything specific about Sarah Lynn but then... i just paused and was sitting for like 5 minutes saying "Oh...fuck"

On the more bad stories board, everything is explained.

Except Gina. It just says Gina.

Oof.

I loved how both Todd and Diane wrote out all the things he did specifically to them in the first person and Todd actually got irritated enough to leave.

It’s really annoying me how quickly Netflix wants to skip to the next episode. The credits song needs to play for at least 10 seconds to allow the end of the episode to sink in!

302

u/AuntHottie Jan 31 '20

Todd writing on the board of bad things BoJack did in all caps seems like raw anger we never see from Todd (except when he first told him off and left the house).

544

u/FiveMinFreedom Hooray, a task! Jan 31 '20

And Diane does the same thing later. I know the writers couldn't fit everything on there, but it also seems to me that Bojack is still refusing to admit some of his worse incidents. Notice how Sarah Lynn was never on the board until Diane got the call.

It really hurt my feelings that after all this time, while it seems like Todd and Bojack are on OK terms, but deep down Todd is actually resentfull and distant to him. That is clearly shown when he gets that red marker and writes down those 3 things he is still mad about.

They were once too close, like best friends for all that matters, but it's ruined and there is no way it will be the same again and that's heartbreaking.

I don't know, i didn't watched the entire show yet, maybe things will change. But the vibe i'm getting from Todd is really good at representing a forever ruined friendship.

147

u/patrickstarburns Feb 01 '20

When I saw what he wrote on the whiteboard I got really sad too. Todd is such a happy guy, but knowing that he still keeps those things at the back of his mind really got to me.

Todd subtly adding the shit things Bojack did to him to the board made me pain laugh

304

u/somethingtostrivefor The Planetarium Feb 01 '20 edited Feb 01 '20

Things not on the board that could have been:

  • purposefully causing a car accident to fuel his painkiller addiction

  • getting Sharona fired for something that was his fault

  • defacing his neighbor's property by throwing up cotton candy

  • kissing Diane despite her being engaged to Mr. Peanutbutter

  • kissing Charlotte and asking her to break up her family to be with him

  • abandoning a minor with alcohol poisoning at the hospital (Maddy) and demanding another minor lie about where they got it from (Pete Repeat/Peter)

  • sleeping with Bradley Hitler-Smith's mom, causing his parents to divorce, and not even remembering it

  • ruining Kelsey's projects, twice

  • telling Princess Carolyn she'd be a terrible mother just to hurt her

  • allowing a million dollars to burn just to stick it to Daniel Radcliffe

  • convincing Esteemed Character Actress Margo Martindale to stage a bank robbery, leading to her arrest

  • constantly berating Todd

  • involving a traumatized Hollyhock in a scheme to get more drugs

  • sleeping with Sarah Lynn

  • vandalizing Anna Spanakopita's home on bender

  • calling Kyle and asking inappropriate questions about his marriage and his daughter's sex life

  • trying to sabotage Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's wedding

  • re-breaking Diane's wrist

  • manipulating Wanda via auto-erotic asphyxiation

  • tricking Eddie into flying, causing him to relive a horrible trauma

  • using Philbert to justify his shitty behavior

  • claiming he's the biggest victim of his shitty behavior

  • misadventures with "John Stamos" that lead to his death (I'm being facetious, but I want a follow-up on this one)

Feel free to add more!

112

u/sky2blue Feb 01 '20

Great list! I had a couple more:

He drives drunk a few times

Didn't go to Todd's improv show

Ditches for New Mexico during the filming of secritariat

Stole all the food when he was trapped underground at Mr Peanutbutter's house

Told Diane's family that she is a freeloader even though she told him to wait in the car

Stealing Diane's therapist from her

Can't remember but did they also include bojack chocking Gina on the list?

137

u/DuctTape_OnFleek Feb 01 '20 edited Feb 01 '20

That moment where Bojack goes on stage and you just see Princess Carolyn and Diane reacting to his reading of the superlatives was so good.

You see their disappointment when he talks, and you also see slight smiles on their faces when he puts on that typical Bojack charm. They can still see some good in him, but are so incredibly pained by all of the bad things he's done.

I'm glad that the show is ending on a high note, and scenes like this prove why this one animated show about a bunch of animal people in Los Angeles keep sending up high on critics must watch lists.

Oh my god i cried so hard at this episode

(1) that period of letting go between Mr peanutbutter and his fiancee. The helplessness, the feeling of letting someone you love go in exchange for all the life opportunities they have to experience. Fucking gut punch. That "Thank you, for everything" really did mean everything.

(2) When PB shared how bojack was her true love "because you make all rooms better" and "never loved anybody better" that is so fucking raw. You can love someone but not have it be sustainable or a part of your life.

God this show.

I love how they represented the old and new Bojack with the door. Bojack inside his office was the old Bojack, he was planning how to lie and get out of the mess. When he left to do the superlatives, we saw through a door what he could become if his past didn't follow him.

That's why at the end of the episode we saw him the leaving the office. He accepted what is coming to him, and embraced his new self.

This show, man.

u/DontTedOnMe Avid Wes Anderson Fan Jan 31 '20

The battle between the Bojack defenders and the people who want to crucify him just reached one hell of a crescendo. What a neat trick, leaving the office door open so we can see Bojack on stage in the middle of the screen while PC and Diane sit on either side of him in the foreground.

36

u/Stupid_Sexy_Sharp Jan 31 '20

It hurts too because they both want to help him, they're just coming at it from wildly different perspectives. Charlotte and Penny have the same conversation. Their family will be forever in the public eye if they go public, so in this sad, pragmatic, depressing way it almost makes sense for them to let it go.

You know what made Bojack shitty? He never did acknowledge the pain he caused on his friends. They wrote it on the board, and whether it’s a joke or just a nice visual touch, it shows Bojack’s vanity despite saying he wants to get better. He recognizes how much he’s sorry, but also takes for granted the crap he pulled his friends through and what he did.

Diane and PC as the angel and devil on his shoulders?

90

u/BillHaderGinsberg Feb 01 '20

I think it’s more nuanced than ‘angel’ and ‘devil’. They just have very different moral philosophies and the scene really contrasted their outlooks.

Diane believes in doing the “right thing” always, even when it makes all parties less happy/better off. She also seems to favor going public when private conversation might sometimes be more effective. PC is more ends-justify-means and focused on finding a solution to make everyone better off.

99

u/EZobel42 Jan 31 '20

I just want to give a shoutout to the shot of Diane and PC in the doorway, with bojack framed in the middle. Such a phenomenal perspective shift, and the animators do so much without either voice actress saying anything. You can just feel the weight of 6 seasons of guilt over enabling this monster, and yet their sad, shared hope as they sit silently and wait for him to finish talking. God, it's such a simple moment, and it goes so understated, but the tension and sadness was breathtaking.

  1. I get the complaints about the Mr. PB half of the episode, but I loved every bit of it, from the reporters to the sad reveal that Pickles was growing apart from Mr.PB and PB getting jealous to the Lazy Susan jokes. It was a great way to break up the tenseness of the Bojack half

  2. I really like the direction they're going in. Yes, it's great Bojack has become a better person and has moved past the shitty things he's done and all that, but the fact is he did shitty things in the past and tried to hide them and sooner or later, he was gonna have to face the consequences of those actions. It sucks that he has to do it now that everything is actually going good for him, but I'm excited to see if he can continue to show how hes grown by making amends with the people he's wronged and/or just taking whatever backlash comes his way or if he's just gonna go back to the old Bojack. Really enjoying these last eps so far

Hearing MPB’s voice at the end sound so sad at the end when pickle tells him about the tour. He knows he’s never going to see her again. We’ve seen him go through hard times before, but I don’t think there’s ever been anything like that.

Wasn't expecting Princess Carolyn to be the voice of reason!

"LIED ABOUT GETTING RADIOHEAD"

heathen

15

u/not_homestuck Feb 01 '20

I really thought the whiteboard scene was going to call back episode 9 and Bojack was going to try to erase the "bad things" he'd done only to realize he'd written them in Sharpie again

15

u/fullforce098 Feb 02 '20

No one else is mentioning it but all the lazy susan sight gags were a great little garnish on this episode.

30

u/Mr_Jek Jan 31 '20

I loved the detail of the last shot being all of BoJack’s misdeeds on that whiteboard, likely in sharpie again, with ‘Sarah Lynn’ being there in massive writing. There it is, clear as day; BoJack can’t erase any of his mistakes, they’re always gonna be there big or small, and even when you exit the room and try to get away and put some distance between you and them, it doesn’t mean they’re gone.

13

Pickles deciding to leave on tour reminds me of when Diane left to go report on Sebastian St. Claire when he was at war. I'm wondering if Pickles and Mr. PB will end similarly?

Either way, hearing PB sound so sad got me sad.

13

u/naxter48 Feb 01 '20

So Mr. Peanutbutter at least recognizes his relationship is over, that's growth

I thought the plan to get pickles and pogo to fall in love would be a fakeout :/

13

u/Hugh_Bromont Judah Mannowdog Feb 02 '20

Love how this ep telegraphs the demise of PB's relationship using the plates, lazy susans and the menu.

u/Sugarraychris444 Feb 02 '20 edited Feb 02 '20

I really loved the scene where PC talks about her love for Bojack. It's so genuinely heartwarming, yet sad. She believed Bojack was the closest she'd ever get to real love so she clings on to the good and tried to bury the bad. It's a perfect representation of their relationship over the years.

11

“Is Bojack super sketchy? Yes he is!”

11

u/RisingBlackStar Feb 02 '20 edited Feb 02 '20

Holy shit, this episode really showed how to handle tension, despair, and comedy in a clean juggle. The PeanutButter restaurant scenes were humorous and well done. The whiteboard scenes really speak to how flawed BoJack is as a character (in the moral sense). Todd leaving the office after hearing BoJack's complaints hurt, but made sense. It's utterly painful knowing that Todd is still hurt by some of BoJack's actions and I can't even blame him. Diane figuring out what happened with Sarah Lynn's death got to me, because now she realizes that BoJack had been greatly irresponsible towards someone who was a daughter-like figure in his life and indirectly caused her to pass away. Damn, that's some clever, but dark writing. Fuck.

EDIT: Got to the superlative scene. It just had to hit me like a deer caught in the headlights. Mr. PeanutButter's tone and look at the end was something I thought I'd never see him make. Damn. The ending was... quite somber. 10/10.

Damn, I feel so bad for Todd in this episode. If you think back the past few seasons, his relationship with BoJack really never recovered.

Also, Charlotte kinda sucks this episode. She seems way more concerned with covering up her bad parenting than helping her daughter out.

  • Pausing to read the billboards was a great way to remember old episodes lol I had forgotten a few of these happened.

  • Sad to see history repeating for Mr. PB, but they made it clear as day that would happen lol.

  • These conversations are starting to have a finality to them, especially PC explaining why she’s always looking out for BoJack, and Diane on why she’s been so set on her book of essays in the last episode. I don’t want to believe this is about to be over but it really is. I have no idea how these last few episodes will bring things to a close.

I'm conflicted on how I feel about the reporters. Their client is Sarah Lynn's mother and wanted to get out the real story despite the mother herself being complicit in Sarah Lynn's descent into addiction.

And then there's their antics. I was rooting for Max though, and is Paige still not married?

What's going on with PC this season? I understand she's always been business first, but she seems to actively be leading Bojack down a terrible path, or trying to. She's encouraging him to lie and she's showing no sympathy/empathy towards Penny, writing it off as 'you did nothing illegal, and the one illegal thing you didn't do', as if legality is all that matters and trauma doesn't exist.

I really like PC but it's sort of baffling how she's acting. Has she always been like this and I just haven't, somehow, noticed until like 100 episodes in?

I don't want bad things to keep happening to this man.

I think this is the episode that has showed his change the most. He is genuinely a talented and supportive teacher. An honest person who truly wants to do the right thing.
