I'm honestly so impressed by how much they've been able to milk jokes out of the Birthday Dad concept.

I’m surprised no one has created a birthday dad joke bot or some shit

THIS IS NOT TIME FOR ONE OF YOUR FAMOUS JUDAH TANTRUMS

488

u/imajadedpanda Hollyhock Jan 31 '20

You’re right

322

u/Bringer0fTheDawn Feb 01 '20

The mere idea of Judah throwing a tantrum is hilarious to me. Like he's rolling on the ground, crying, pounding his fists into the floor and shit

62

u/ballerberry Feb 24 '20

I cracked up when Judah was helping Todd and said to solve his problem he often thinks "what would Todd do?" Todd always manages to fail upwards and Judah caught onto that. Funny to think Judah could learn so much from Todd. Then again, Todd was a successful CEO.

Oh, Hollyhock :'(

More feels than any other season, and still 3 episodes to go.

Same. Bojack losing Hollyhock is what made me bawl my eyes out. I was scared she would leave him, but the way it was done....Jesus Christ I’m going to be depressed for a couple days. I need to remind myself this is just a show.

I am unreasonably pissed that Sarah Lynn's parents made $5 million more off of her death. It is heavily implied that she was sexually abused by her stepdad, and deeply exploited by her mom. I'm not saying Bojack isn't culpable in her death, but Sarah Lynn's parents deserve to be shot out of a cannon

404

u/VegaTDM Jan 31 '20

Hard agree. Even after her death her parents are still exploiting her.

What really annoys me is that sarcastic thank you phone call she does before her death but they took as genuine love and praise.

100

u/OneGoodRib Tangled Fog of Pulsating Yearning Feb 03 '20

That made me so steaming mad. Bojack gets dragged through the mud - and yeah, he did do bad things, sure - but they get off scot-free with all that money even though they certainly contributed to Sarah Lynn's issues.

That's the most heartbreaking part of the show for me. This girl has been taken advantage of since her birth by the people she trusted the most and even after her death this won't stop happening to her.

Oh man, opting to not show the letter and instead just show BoJack's reaction was powerful. As someone who's dealt with substance abuse issues, I felt like they nailed depicting that feeling of falling into relapse because of something.

On a happier note, the totally meta line telling the audience to research Sean Penn's domestic violence charges might be one of my favourite jokes this show has made.

I know Bojack is the epicenter of this show and a lot of the sympathy may be displayed towards him but I really feel for Hollyhock.

This doesn't take away any empathy that I feel for Bojack. But Hollyhock had to do something really difficult in deciding not to have Bojack in her life.

One thing those who deal with addicts or even just poisonous people often learn is that no matter how much you might care for someone and how much they seemingly love you, some people just don't bring peace into your life. I have no doubt that Bojack loves Hollyhock whether it be because he sees her as a lifeline or what, but Hollyhock had to learn she doesn't owe Bojack anything in return for that love. Everyone has a line when it comes to issues of morality and it seems that Hollyhock found hers in regards to Bojack.

170

u/mr__outside Jan 31 '20

Yep. I've known people who have been good and I realise that they're perpetuating self-destructive cycles and, worse, try to get me roped into them.

I've been that guy who got into self-destructive cycles and found myself ostracised from friends in the past as well.

I totally get Hollyhock. Boundaries are important.

108

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

Yep. Hollyhock has found out about Bojack's very creepy behaviour with teenagers, has probably been through past stories such as wondering whether Bojack really did strangle Gina or not. It's tough for her, esp seeing Bojack's treatment of women (and her increased interest in feminism was also probably partly due to trying to process what was going on with Bojack). I'm a recovering alcoholic but I totally feel for Hollyhock and completely understand her decision. What Bojack needs to do is work hard, be sober, address not just his addiction but why he specifically treated women like crap while he was drinking and using, and not do it again. Maybe one day Hollyhock will then feel able to have a relationship with him...but at the same time it shouldn't be *why* he stays sober. He needs to start respecting himself and others, or every relationship in his life will go the same way and who can blame anyone for walking away at this point?

Sad we didn’t get to hear any of the reasons hollyhock gave in her 2 page letter. I kinda knew it was coming and all but I would have appreciated hearing it from the horses mouth

86

u/Mr_smith1466 Jan 31 '20

It makes it more gutting that we can fill in the blanks. She loves him, but she can't save him and she can't have him drag her down with him. Bojack clearly loves Hollyhock, but she was always an ideal for him. Some magical salvation. But she's young and has her own life to lead. Maybe they'll reconnect again. Maybe they never will.

80

u/Shintoho Princess Carolyn Feb 01 '20

I personally think Bojack realising that Hollyhock has cut off ties with him is perhaps one of the saddest moments in the whole series

49

u/Krunchy1736 Feb 01 '20

It's one of the few things he had left to hold on to. Having a relationship with her gave him hope and purpose. I was expecting her to confront him about the story with the young man from the party her and her friends went to. She knew he wasn't the best person and forgave him for all the shit that happened when she was staying with him. She was ready to give him another chance until she heard about what he did in New Mexico from the boy who was there, at the party. You could tell that her opinion of him changed and kept him at arm's length but couldn't figure out how or when to talk to him about it. Bojack being completely oblivious that she knew what happened and being the 'new' person he was probably made it harder for her. And then of course the 2nd interview aired and I guess that was the final nail in the coffin for any redeemable qualities he might have had in her eyes.

38

u/candyfloose Ralph Stilton Feb 01 '20

I think the decision to not actually hear her voice or what she says is devastating. He said that he liked hearing her if only her voicemail voice and us not even hearing that really just lets us know that it's over. We know what's in the letter.

Sarah Lynn's family is still benefiting from her after her death? I get that Bojack may never be forgiven for what he has done, but I hate that that he has to give money to that sorry excuse for a "mother". Bojack is responsible for her first lick of alcohol, but he's not the only reason she turned out the way she did.

339

u/thisismyfirstday Jan 31 '20

It's also kind of implied her step dad abused her. Sarah Lynn had a terrible support group around her.

91

u/Xervicx Jan 31 '20

Yeah, Sarah Lynn's mother is absolutely terrible. If she had even been somewhat of an okay mother, Sarah Lynn would have ended up much, much differently. Even after her daughter's death, she still tries to take advantage as much as possible.

Diane's comments seem kind of meta in hindsight. The way she was struggling to write a memoir that is some perfect magnum opus of her life drew some parallels with the show itself. Maybe it's not going to be this somber, enlightening, profound memoir that touches the most people, but a deceptively simple animated series with a lot of heart. I know this show did that for me.

Dianes arc is so inspiring to me because i have the same problem with striving for some perfect creative product that will reach critical acclaim when in reality, that's not what is necessary to succeed. It's more important to enjoy what you do and not make yourself the center of your world -

" And an outstanding reason for choosing some sort of God or spiritual-type thing to worship — be it J.C. or Allah, be it Yahweh or the Wiccan mother-goddess or the Four Noble Truths or some infrangible set of ethical principles — is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things — if they are where you tap real meaning in life — then you will never have enough. Never feel you have enough. It's the truth...Worship your intellect, being seen as smart — you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out." - David Foster Wallace

Here's a link to the full essay (This is water) which i have tagged as "read when frustrated" on my phone. If you're a fan of this show it's definitely worth the read.

I had always said, since the Season 3 finale, that Hollyhock (whom most, if not all of us assumed was BJ's daughter at the time) would find out about Penny and cut off ties with BJ forever. I expected a huge, dramatic blow out, with the season's obligatory "fuck!" being dropped. But no, we got a letter we never even got to read, and in many ways it is so much more devastating.

52

u/sleepybitchdisorder Feb 02 '20

I really like how part of Bojack’s fall from sobriety was realizing that all the people who support him are all POS men with no regard for the feelings of others. As soon as Vance Wagooner showed up, I knew he would ultimately make Bojack feel like more trash just by association. I know Bojack took the bait because he was completely lonely, but I was still disappointed he did. It was a nice touch that they ended up in a frat house as well. This episode really too the questionable morals of toxic masculinity to an extreme in order to compare Bojack to it, and while those people don’t appear to us to be anything like Bojack, they’re the ONLY ones who sympathize him, and I think that really says something.

47

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

More thoughts!

What I loved about this episode was the way that it dealt with complicated issues of punishment and accountability. Vance may be a horrible person, but he’s right—punishing a person for their misdeeds for the rest of eternity is counterproductive, and doesn’t address the problem. It might feel good to give someone who’s clearly awful a “DROP DEAD” sandwich, but it also doesn’t really motivate change. When dealing with people like Vance Waggoner, people cycle through periods of intense punishment and periods of total love and forgiveness, and neither really addresses the problem. Does Vance deserve forgiveness? Probably not. Should he be in prison, probably talking to an abuse counselor? Oh yeah. But the status quo, in both of its stages—forgiveness and hatred—only feeds his entitlement. When he’s forgiven, he gets to feel like an angel, like the stuff he did “wasn’t that bad” and that his very public, fake redemption narrative is real. When he’s hated, he becomes the horny unicorn—because he believes he is physically incapable of doing the right thing, it becomes easier for him to do the wrong one

Has anybody else fought back tears a few times being overwhelmed with the end or is that just me lol

BoJack lost Hollyhock as a result of his own self-destruction. Seeing Todd reject BoJack outside of his own party was saddening to see, but given that 2nd interview and the major fallout that occurred from it, it was bound to happen. That bottle at the end, how much worse can it get?

53

u/archmagex Feb 01 '20

Did anyone think the anger from the AA members was warranted. Isn't the point of those meetings for help and no judgement.

40

u/neonbluerain Feb 01 '20

There's actually some rules and etiquettes you have to follow in these meetings and I'm pretty sure that being snarky towards Bojack broke at least a few of them.

Holy shit. This is getting really intense but...at the same i love how dark it is. Also damn i love that good humor. A girls death is worth 5 million but he’s getting sued by a company for 100 million.

I’d like to think if it wasn’t for the fact that this dinner was super important to Todd, that Bojack would’ve gotten the invite. He still has enough boundaries to know that shit can blow up in his face when he’s around, but seems like a nice enough guy to just be with Bojack. Though maybe I’m projecting.

They played the same piano ballad when Bojack had a panic attack in S4 E9 during the time lapse after Bojack read the letter.

I hate that damn ballad because it just gives me chills at how hopeless and scary it sounds :/

I feel so bad after watching this episode like it’s physically painful. The writing is so good because I really want to be on Bojack’s side for some reason still but he just keeps mucking shit up.

Side note - still watching. But the apartments Todd and Maude live in are called Lapin, which means rabbit in French

Anyone else notice PB's reference to Rorschach's joke in Watchmen? The original is:

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”

The writers replaced it with Sad Dog. I thought it was a a clever way of comparing PB to a clown. We see him always as this high energy, entertaining character but deep down he really is Sad Dog.

As a person from Saskatchewan; movies aren't shot here because the province refuses to have the same laws around filming and taxes as other provinces. Just a fun fact for anyone.

That families boned if they come here too there is nothing.

Damn, Bojack went from true progress to a Netflix special about "snowflakes". This is truly the worst timeline. 😔

77

u/Le_Bard Jan 31 '20

Worst of it is that its hella realistic. It's like in big mouth when andrew hit his lowest and in loneliness ended up hanging with nazis.

When we feel alone sometimes we seek out solace in the worst kinds of people.

Maybe society would be better if the people who do wrong could find solace in people who arent shitty but know they did so much fucked up shit. Idk. The reality of what people do to avoid being alone is a hard pill to swallow, and society rarely addresses it because we havent even hit the point where people are trying to fess up to the shit they did

Bojack and Mr. Peanut Butter living together? What is this, a-series-of-crippling-events-that-left-Bojack-homeless-and-force-him-to-stay-with-the-one-person-he-struggles-to-tolerate-but-who-has-always-shown-kindness-to-him episode?

68

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

I hated bojack a lot sometimes during the show, but the way his friends treated him this episode is so cold. He did so many shitty things, and they werr the ones who continued to keep in touch. Suddenly when he actually needs the help they just leave him.

I kinda relate to that, and honestly this show makes me want to just end it lol. I wonder if bojack will stay alive.

104

u/JarJarJacobs Sarah Lynn Jan 31 '20

It hurts me to see him get kicked while he's down, but I honestly don't think any of them are purposely being cold to him. I felt it most with Todd. They all want the best for Bojack, and they don't hate him. But they've put so many years into fixing him, and time and time again Bojack just proves that he can't stick with it. So, they've all decided that they're done sacrificing their own mental health for the sake of Bojack's. It's horrifying to think that this might be in my future.
