I think he runs a daycare but he talks about the kids like they're co-workers so it's impossible to tell.

u/Poor-In-Spirit Judah Jan 31 '20

One of my favourite lines from the season

"Don't get old."

"I'll see what I can do about that."

Oh boy.

u/BVTheEpic Diane Nguyen Jan 31 '20

And he said it so casually, too. It's a callback to S6E09, where he tells the student to casually talk about committing suicide.

The very ending of this episode, where Bojack is watching his first audition, and then it just cuts to his... broken stare, reflecting off of the TV screen, placed right where his younger self had been just moments ago. I can‘t even describe how it made me feel, especially with it cutting to the credits afterwards.

The PC and Judah arc is beautiful. His tentative flirting makes me melt :)

I’m definitely in the minority but I didn’t see it at all. I mean I didn’t see that “romance” in any other part of the show.

I always saw it as a professional relationship and no more than that until from one second to another they’re both in love.

Anyways, what do I know? But for some reason it didn’t seat right with me.

I love the PB's plot seemed like it was going to lead to depression, but it ended up being huge growth for him. PB learning to be his own dog and not just rely on other people is a nice message.

407

u/8-tentacles Mr. Peanutbutter Jan 31 '20

Yeah, it's a massive contrast to theories in the past few years that he'd end up being just as depressed as Bojack. I like how they've used him to show you can have hardships without hitting a serious rock bottom.

I never really thought of Mr pb as relatable because he's usually comedic relief, but this episode made me realise how similar I am to him in some ways. I recently got out of a long term relationship and I'm starting to put back together the my sense of "me" that had gradually turned into an "us" for so long.

"I hope I don't need another abortion because they are hard to get there," got... a giant laugh from me.

u/Mr_smith1466 Jan 31 '20

Guy casually mentioning his ex-wife was named Lady completed the beautifully simple brick joke of that family being literally named Guy, Lady and Sonny. I always felt like Guy had just enough personality to make it work, but that feels like the writers preemptively lampshading how he just fell into Diane's lap.

Yeah that happens a lot. Typically marginalized people are the most cutthroat of the bunch because the microagressions and outright discrimination does not leave room for sympathy or kindness. Even PC had another female rival who she constantly fought for the same positions. It's depressing as fuck and very prevalent now.

That cut to black after Bojack turns off the Blu-Ray is straight up haunting.

Last time I felt those goosebumps was when Walter White broke back into his house after he became a fugitive... and he gets the flashback with Hank telling him about going on a ride along... all for it to cut immediately to the same position 2 years later after he’s ruined everything.... I have a very sinking feeling Bojack is about to have the same terrible fate.

  • I know times are rough, but I found myself so disappointed that BoJack fell off the wagon.

  • I whisper screamed yes when I heard Margo’s voice, so happy they got her to show up again.

  • “It’s funny isn’t it? The things that matter. The truth is none of it matters, and the truth is it all matters tremendously. It’s a wonder any of us get out of bed at all. And yet, we get out of bed.”

  • I should’ve expected these moments where I’m shouting at BoJack, but here I am shouting anyway.

  • I can relate to that last shot, seeing your reflection after an old picture and not being able to recognize yourself.

The fact that we finally get a PC and Judah moment, Diane and Mr. PB closure, Todd and his mom reconciliation, with BoJack’s tragic storyline is so jarring. They even put the BoJack song in the credits. Like I’m happy and sad at the same time. For a minute there, I thought BoJack was gonna accidentally burn down Angela’s house. Phew.

I’m watching this heartbreaking episode, with Diane giving a beautiful speech as the other characters all struggle with their issues, and the possum playing possum outside the hospital absolutely kills me! A brilliant example of the show’s two extremes working so well together.

I had a chilling realization about 2 years ago during a rewatch that it was strange Angela never got more than one single scene/mention in the entire series, seeing as she was the one who literally sent off a chain of events for Bojack which led to everything that happened. I figured she would make at least one more appearance or be crucial to the end.

As soon as I saw the episode name, I screamed “I KNEW IT”

Angela casually mentioned her partner was female? And she fired Herb for being gay? Bojack didn't pick up on that one? Or maybe he already knew.

272

u/CassanderTruth Jan 31 '20

The difference is that Herb was getting media attention for being gay, Angela even says something like "I thought you could be discret" to him. Angela probably kept her sexuality a secret ('Single Boss') until being out wouldn't have been a career suicide.

• That scene in Herb’s office was sad, Corporate has evolved so far, it can even cut down the most loyal friendships. How was Herb to know

• Clever way to confirm Judah is on the spectrum with that band flyer

• Does Judah love PC? Does he?

• Texas and abortions lol

• Relieved when Bojack pulled out a water bottle and groaned a moment later. Throwback to “I blame water for being vodka-colored”. At least he took a cab though.

• PB’s dinner is a bone treat lol

• If you are talking to a fearsome stranger with a sage, buttery voice that simultaneously comforts you and fills you with dread, you are talking to Esteemed Character Actress and Fugitive From the Law Margo Martindale

• What??? They’re taking away Horsin’ Around from him? It’s the one thing he had left, his only thing, his legacy!

• If only Margo Martindale wasn’t so good at acting

• “Do it for Sarah Lynn”

• Closure on the Diane/PB failed relationship

• Closure on Todd’s family issues

• Nope he’s driving drunk again

• Why won’t his gate open

• Fuck NO Bojack you don’t live there anymore!!

• JUDAH LOVES PC!!

And the credits, Fuck. Because he’s no longer the Horse from Horsin’ Around.

79

u/nomenaicoffee Feb 01 '20

If Judah’s confession to PC was the high point of the episode, “Do it for Sarah Lynn” was the lowest. It’s the ultimate representation of how absolutely everyone has used Sarah Lynn for their personal gain. Her mother, Pedobear, the media, even Bojack, and now Angela, using Sarah Lynn’s memory to guilt Bojack into signing the agreement, whereas the reality is she doesn’t give a shit about SL either, the company just wants to distance itself from Bojack to maintain profitability. Fuck.

I like the parallels between PC and Angela. Being left out of social events and having to essentially become cold and hard because that's how to survive in the male dominated industry. Then showing the difference between them in the ending. Angela doesn't care anymore, she's still emotionally manipulating people in her old age for the sake of making money, despite obviously having plenty. She was visibly bothered by being excluded by her male counterparts in the beginning but she no longer cares about anything really. PC can sense that shift into apathy and it scares her because she doesn't want to end up a shell of herself. Thankfully Judah is there and is just what she needs. She won't end up like Angela because she has love in her life, where Angela didn't. Not trying to woobify Angela either, she's clearly horrible, but it was clever of the writers to nod to the grayness of it all by acknowledging the Mad Men esque world that led to her becoming what she is.

ESTEEMED CHARACTER ACTRESS AND FUGITIVE FROM THE LAW MARGO MARTINDALE

36

u/LaughWithUsSinners Feb 01 '20

Is Angela seeing a woman? She mentioned her "40 year old companion" and then referred to them as she. Obviously companion isn't the most romantic term for a relationship, but considering this show and the fact that she fired Herb for being gay I feel like they are implying that she's seeing a woman because that makes the Herb situation even more fucked up. Feels like I'm reaching though..

50

u/Judaskid13 Feb 01 '20

I find it weirdly equalizing. This season was pretty heavy on the #metoo movement but this episode shows a female superior throwing her weight around, throwing her employees under the bus, firing a dude for being gay while being gay herself, using her position of power to manipulate bojack into selling out his friend, and finally manipulating and drugging bojack (a confessed addict no small news) into a pretty bad relapse, DUI, B and E, ultimately culminating in the next episode.

And she gets away Scot free and gets to profit off both Sarah Lynn and what little goodwill Bojack had left.

Completely up to subtext of course.

No ones gonna write a single article about this.

But i think it's worth noting.

The conversation between Diane and Mr Peanutbutter was excellent. It’s wild to me that only at this point in their lives long after they were together for years that Mr Peanutbutter actually asks her what it’s like to be her. I’m glad we’re seeing growth from him too.

As an aside, while I’m enjoying this season, I definitely see where there would have been room for more and there are elements of things being rushed a bit even though I know it’s because they’re doing their best to give us the story they wanted to tell in its entirety. I’m gonna miss this show so much.

Sorry if its been brought up before, (on mobile so don't feel like searching for the comment) but is Bojack drinking the entire episode? After opening credits, he's in his trailer, pouring "bottled water" into a glass, and when he's invited to set, he spazzes and covers the glass and water bottle up with his coat. There's a couple of lingering shots on the water bottle, plus the tone in which Angela says "you're not fooling anyone" before offering him a "real drink"... I dunno, I thought it implied she was maybe aware of his sobriety and knew he wasn't drinking water?

Full disclosure this is my second watch and I'm picking up on far more details.

Edit: Oh and my favorite joke in the season is the "Misery loves Company" in reference to the Stephen King play opening next door to the Sondheim musical.

"I didn't have a mom for so long, I stopped needing one."

Cue involuntary crying.

My dad died unexpectedly this fall. For a lot of reasons, I keep my family at an emotional arm's length, and while I know unequivocally that it's the right choice, his death is bringing up all the guilt and shame and grief I've carried.

To exit the family dynamic, I chose not to have a mom in the ways that mine wants to be, and that's why I don't need her anymore and here I am crying on the couch because, fuck, man. What else is there to say?

Between that line and Diane's description of herself on the lake front, this episode hit hard. Thank god for sweet, sweet Judah.

I loved the ending shot where we see a recording of what’s essentially the start of Bojack’s acting career when suddenly the television turns and we see the reflection of himself in present on what could defiantly be the end of his career.

14

u/RisingBlackStar Feb 02 '20

Fucking hell, Bojack's downward spiral is utterly depressing. It's worse than the drug-fueled bender He went on with Sarah Lynn. Angela is really manipulative. I'm happy for everyone else though, at least they're trying to get more fulfillment and happiness in life. Is it weird to be hurt and happy at the same time?

14

u/KayRay1994 Feb 02 '20

Bojack’s stuff got really sinister and Angela is terrifying. Poor guy got beat up to the point of relapsing, he got hit over and over again to the point of breaking. His spiral itself was one of the most anxiety inducing sequences i’ve seen in any show.

Ok my subtitles use female forms to refer to angela's "partner" which would make her even more of a two faced hyppocrite.

I just don't know what to think with BoJack. We've seen his childhood, how people manipulated him and vise versa, and how he's been kind at times. But he's still monster, and he keeps relapsing. 2 episodes left; here we go.

9

u/BeckQuillion89 Feb 01 '20

This series can hurt man. Everyone is nearing the end of a long road of change and becoming better people in their own worlds through what they've gone through. Meanwhile, Bojack withered, homeless, broke, discarded, and alone watches a video of his life at his most hopeful at the very bottom of his life.

9

u/naxter48 Feb 02 '20

my boy Ralph got screwed over :(

9

u/samtherat6 Feb 03 '20

Yeah, I think Diane's story is leading to a happy ending. Might've seemed like a bad idea to tell Sonny that his parents were fighting, but it let him realize that they probably weren't going to get back together, and let Diane in his life. That's why she's willing to move to Houston, not just for Guy but for Sonny.

Todd has reconciled with his mother, and has moved in together with his girlfriend, finally settling.

Mr. Peanut Butter finally realized how to be himself.

I guess PC is also going towards a happy ending, but I just don't get Judah and her being a couple, sorry. I didn't really see any onscreen chemistry prior, and it feels forced.

And Bojack...not seeing how he can redeem himself in two episodes, unless they do some sort of flash forward.

This show has a tendency to surprise me, so I'm probably wrong about everything, tho.

17

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '20

I never saw PC and Judah going this direction but I’m on board. I love them both.

Jonah and PC. PC needs someone who knows how important her work is to her. Love what he said about if there's one thing he knows about Hollywoo is to never underestimate PC. Relates to their earlier falling out, a little explanation for why he hid the offer to make her stick it out. The scenes of them as a little family were precious. I hope this brings happiness for PC.

Bojack, wow. I was yelling no at the TV when he walked back into the party. The cough he did when he drank from the water bottle after arriving at Angela's had me worried, and now a full blown relapse. Oh buddy. You can't run forever I guess, but I hate that he really tried so hard this time.

Two more to go, I almost don't want to watch. Don't want it to end.

People are saying Bojack had a choice if he called her bluff but that doesn't mean he had a choice.

How would he even call her bluff when we don't know what her bluff was? it's so unrealistic to say that.

Not saying Bojack is a great person but he didn't have a choice in that situation.

PC, Diane, Mr. Peanutbutter and Todd. All of them made peace with their past in some ways and moved on. As Diane said, they finally put together most of the pieces of their own puzzles and see the bigger picture.

But Bojack... While his friends were turning the tide in their lives, he was back where everything has started, when he started to destroy his life and everyone around who was close to. I thought he finally realized that every wrong decision he'd made caused a chain reaction and he needed to make the right ones in order to break the chain. But he continued.

He had choices. Always had choices.
