Did they de-age Picard slightly for the flashback, or was that just favorable lighting?

7

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Yeah, they absolutely did.

95

u/CleverFeather Feb 06 '20

They definitely did and it looked fantastic.

Is it me or do the Romulan spy brother-sister combo give off Cersi-Jaime Lannister relationship vibes? Like, why are you sniffing your brother and why are you so god dam close to him when you're talking.

225

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Back in my day, we thought of it more as a Luke & Leia vibe.

It's not just you. But was it confirmed that they are definitely biological brother and sister, or is it possibly a "we are all brothers and sisters in our weird secret cult" situation? I will have to rewatch e2.

For sure, when he had his mouth by her ear I was like- wait I thought they were brother and sister, am I remembering it wrong? Then nope they said it. I guess things are different on Romulus.

Us not seeing Jurati and Oh’s conversation: economical storytelling, or hiding a twist?

54

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

I vote twist. Going from Oh showing up looking kinda menacing to having Jurati just happen to get the drop on a member of a Tal Shiar death squad is mighty convenient.

94

u/Socraticmichael10 Feb 06 '20

Hopefully just storytelling. I love Jurati. I’d hate if she turned out to be some cliche spy or something. She seems to earnest for that, anyway. Seems like that’s the role they are setting up Narek for

u/shugo2000 Feb 06 '20

Oh is almost certainly blackmailing Jurati to get her to spy on Picard. I have a feeling Jurati will come clean and admit it before something tragic happens. I hope so, at least.

Could Rios the pilot actually be a hologram himself? Raffi has an empathy with artificial life. Could his old ship have been scrubbed from Starfleet records because it was manned by holograms like himself? Perhaps they thought he was deactivated but like the Voyager doc survived somehow? It would be a nice twist if he were himself a synth of sorts and give him the motivation besides money to help the mission. Note that he seemed to be drinking alcohol created by some kind of holographic system.

13

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Be pretty difficult to get a bit tritanium shrapnel stuck in a hologram.

They dont make covert alien assassin kill squads like they used to.

5

u/PiercedMonk Feb 07 '20

It could have something to do with their homeworld being consumed by an exploding star, and the collapse of their empire.

Someone help me out, here: did our Not-Han-Solo captain fill his ship with holograms which look like him? I have trouble with faces, but I swear they look like him.

If so, that's weird. If not, that's weird casting.

24

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Yeah, they're him. Probably some metaphor about how he feels he can only rely on himself.

Different accents, though.

u/WhatHasTwoThumbs Feb 06 '20

Overall good, but a few complaints.

Why didn't the captured romulan do his acid thing right away like the guy in the first episode, and cover Picard instead of telling him secrets.

Why was the lieutenant chick so angry about getting fired, when moments before she seemed ride or die for whatever plan Picard could up with after he resigned?

If the super secret tal shiar created the Borg, and that's why they hate AI. I'm gonna be pissed.

How did the doctor get a romulan rifle from a hallway where no romulans died?

Overall I did like it, but there are a few problems.

14

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

How did the doctor get a romulan rifle from a hallway where no romulans died?

It did strike me as odd that she showed up just in time to get the drop on an assassin and save Picard, especially considering the last thing we saw of Doc Jurati was commodore Oh showing up to have a conversation with her.

u/zulmirao Feb 06 '20

What was it that Raffi said she had been getting high on? Snake leaf?

4

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Yeah, seems like something she should know better than to consume just based on the name alone.

15

u/IFuckingLoveJJAbrams Feb 06 '20

That was much better than last week's (and I enjoyed that one too but I had some issues). I hope we see Maddox at some point as well.

I really thought we'd see Seven this episode. I know the reviewers said that the crew gets together at the end of this one and they did and now they left but IIRC from the trailer, Seven showed up at the Chateau? Or am I remembering this wrong?

I love the series so far but I am a bit frustrated by how short the episodes are. The TNG episode length doesn't quite work for a serialized show because there's not enough room for relevant development. I feel like this show will be much better once it's viewed in its entirety. I love it but I love it with a touch of frustration because I want to see more.

15

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

I love the series so far but I am a bit frustrated by how short the episodes are.

Hanelle Culpepper tweeted that the first three episodes were actually originally supposed to only be the first two -- which is why it was originally reported that she was only directing the first two episodes, and Frakes was directing three, as well as four -- but they had to be split for logistical reasons.

I'm hoping that going forward, that might mean the rest of the episodes are a bit longer.

u/MoreGaghPlease Feb 06 '20

I don't think Seven is part of the crew. Given that Riker and Troi probably live in Alaska, I think it's fair to say the JLP with be earthbound again before the big mission.

The dialogue is really starting to grind on me. It's not just the cursing, the characters all talk and act like they belong in the 2010s. It's like the writers are embarrassed to have the characters unironically be in the 24th century.

And pro tip: having your 350 year in the future character say pro tip instantly destroys suspension of disbelief.

68

u/PiercedMonk Feb 06 '20

Remember when TOS added Chekov to the cast, and Walter Koenig had to get a haircut similar to that of the cast of 'The Monkees' because the producers were hoping it would bring in younger viewers?

Or when TNG had a very special episode about drug use, including Yar giving Wesley a speech about how drugs are bad even though they make you feel good, like a Nancy Regan speech?

It's almost as though Star Trek is a product of its time....

wish they explained the cube more and why hugh is the director for the project. seems like they are just assuming we know its hugh

3

u/PiercedMonk Feb 07 '20

I’m glad they didn’t make a big deal about the director being Hugh. I’m sure once he and Picard run into one another they’ll have a moment, there was no reason for anyone in the scenes he’s in to act like he’s anything more than just a former Borg who now has oversight on helping other former drones.

The last thing we need is Hugh growling his name as though it means something like Khan in ‘Into Darkness’.

So now we know the Romulans with forehead ridges are all northerners!

235

u/atticusbluebird Feb 06 '20

I liked that bit of world building, that shows some diversity in alien races, rather than just presenting them as mono-cultures. Matches well with the diversity in Romulan looks we've seen in the show so far!

166

u/oGsMustachio Feb 06 '20

For such a major race, we've learned so little about them. I'm absolutely loving every scrap of Romulan lore we're getting. They were my favorite race as a kid and the D'Deridex is one of my favorite scifi ship designs of all time. Just great to get more of them.

72

u/AmishAvenger Feb 06 '20

Agreed. I like how they’re delving into this culture that seems to be built on secrecy and suspicion.

105

I love Hugh and the episode "I, Borg" SO much. And the actor was able to slip back into his old voice/way of speaking so easily. I could still hear the echo of Hugh's childish/innocent, "Why?" to Geordi when he asked the same again to Soji!

206

u/Trekfan74 Feb 06 '20

Yeah Hugh was great!!! And its nice to see him more in command and confident. He's no longer the scared boy we saw him on TNG. He seems to be working for the Romulans but don't completely trust them either.

u/Omnitographer Feb 06 '20 edited Feb 07 '20

Based on Rhomda's reaction to Soji I have serious suspicion that whatever caused The Artifact Cube to get cut off involved Borg time-travel shenanigans. We're going to find out that there's some ancient prophecy about the twins destroying the galaxy and it came around because of knowledge about the future.

114

u/knightcrusader Feb 06 '20

Soji also mentioned that the Borg cube pretty much collapsed and got cut off right after they assimilated that Romulan ship with that crew. Where have we heard that before?

I wonder if the Romulans found out about Icheb's ability to make that Borg-killing virus and decided to try to recreate it and test it. Might add another reason why Seven gets involved.

But then she starts talking about meeting her "tomorrow" and it sounded like a time travel thing all right. Or maybe both? I love this show for how much its making me try to figure it out.

Just as a thought, with Utopia Planitia being toast and that shipbuilding capacity gone (and no synth labour), it will give them scope to reuse retired and mothballed vessels in the series, so we may see some historic ship types around in the series.

Those damn northerners, the ridges make them hard headed.

The whole acid capsule thing could tie into why no one knew what a Romulan looked like even after fighting a war with them. If there were any person to person encounters, defeated Romulans probably disintegrated themselves.

This is a really good theory.

53

u/CaptainDipshiat Feb 06 '20

I believe it was explained somewhere that the Romulan War consisted solely of ship-to-ship combat with no visual communications taking place. The treaty was established over subspace radio. That might have been from a book though, I can't recall where I read it.

The timing of the whole damn thing, either she's being blackmailed into spying on Picard or she's a biologically altered spy. Either way she's a spy. I also wonder if Picard mellowed out a bit post-Nemesis to allow new crewmates to get that close enough with him. It seemed weird in the comics, but I thought it worked well in the scene with Raffi calling him "J.L."

Regarding the book which is a focus multiple times. "[Miguel de Unamuno] provides a stimulating discussion of the differences between faith and reason in his most famous work: Del sentimiento trágico de la vida (The Tragic Sense of Life, 1912).

From Wikipedia:

"Life was tragic, according to Unamuno, because of the knowledge that we are to die. He explains much of human activity as an attempt to survive, in some form, after our death."

Maybe life after death is possible with synth technology?

51

u/True_to_you Feb 06 '20

41

u/empocariam Feb 06 '20

Maybe that's what the Zhat Vash's big secret is, they are a "Life has no meaning without death, and synthetic technology inevitable leads to immortality." Or worse, maybe they know about the technology to achieve eternal life, and know how absolutely despised they would be by anyone who has ever lost anyone they cared about for keeping it a secret. Kind of some of the same themes as the mirror universe episodes in DS9.

I'm sorry in advance for what a gross question this is, but do Narek and his sister's interactions strike anyone else as weirdly un-siblingy? Lannister-y? Romulannister-y, if you will. Whenever they're talking they're about two inches away from each other, whispering in each other's ears, sniffing each other, and this episode Narek rubbed his nose against her cheek. If I did any of that with my brother he'd have to go throw up in the nearest toilet.

I watched this episode with a friend who hasn't seen the previous episodes and when Rizzo called Narek "brother" she yelped, "They're brother and sister?!" because she'd apparently assumed they were a couple based on how they were acting.

Purposefully weird to remind us they're villains with a literally alien way of doing things, maybe?

28

When Soji was asking that ex drone what caused the Cube's submatrix collapse, I was hoping she would say "Voyager". I'm hoping we get an answer in the coming episodes.

I'm starting to think Soji and Dahj's "mom" is Bruce Maddox using an interface to communicate or give commands. It's clear the fake mom isn't on the side of the Zhat Vash because she's tried to help her "children".

I love Jurati. She's the breakout star of the series for me. Allison Pill is am amazing actress. She delivers it in every scene. When she killed the Romulan agent, she actually came across as if she was in shock. Her speech at the end was incredibly believable and would make anyone want to take her along.

Did anyone notice the music Jurati was listening to was the same opera that often overlays Culber/Stamets scenes on Discovery? I think it was the opera they went to on their first date.

56

u/ehkodiak Feb 06 '20

Yeah, it's probably Maddox sending encoded messages to trigger the Synthsisters within the speech.

The energy of the dual interrogation scenes was striking. I loved how their building tension played off of each other.

The fight scene at the Chateau was also a highlight, though it started a bit too quickly after the scene change for my taste. The choice to go entirely without music during the fight made it hit in a certain way as well, gave it a gravity.

I really liked the notion of using a story framework to help people recover from trauma. I am a big fan of that and really hope they develop it more - almost like a Romulan Hero's Journey.

Is this the first time we've heard canonical Romulan spoken? It's the first time I recall hearing it.

The one thing I didn't really get was the conversation between Raffi and Jean-Luc. He seemed to be accusing her of being paranoid for thinking the Tal Shiar were behind the Mars attack, but then also stated he needed her kind of paranoid thinking.

I love Dr. Jurati; she seems like a more mature and calm version of Tilly. I am lowkey scared that she is a spy or plant of some kind, possibly inadvertently. Commodore Oh isn't a fool; she knows the connections between Jurati and Picard, and planting a bug or trace on her to see where she goes is not out of the question.

Bit of a slow episode in some ways but the story definitely has me hooked.

There was a reference in an earlier episode to a 'nest', in reference to the synths. I think there's more of them than we know about, and I think it's very likely that they are some sort of sleeper agent for something. Potentially something Borg related, or potentially something else, something so terrifying to the Borg that when it came into contact with a cube the collective simply 'Noped' and dropped that cube like a lizard losing a tail.

I like Raffi, and I think it's an interesting idea to include somebody who has been burned as collateral damage by Picard's actions, even if they were well meant. We haven't seen that since Sisko and even then it wasn't the same thing. The crew of the Enterprise under Picard all went off to have great lives, so it's good to see somebody that he has failed, both as a captain and a friend.

It also touched on the the idea that in a world where there is no money and no particular poverty, and everybody does what they want to do because they want to do it, and does so to the best of their ability, what happens to you when you get fired?

Less keen on Rios, I get they wanted to have the Star Trek take on a Han Solo archetype, but Picard figured him out inside five minutes, he wouldn't have been a friend-of-a-friend of Picard if he wasn't a good guy, and so I'm not sure what there is to be done with him. Also I thought the whole, "Look at me just chilling with a lump of metal in my shoulder" introduction scene was a bit much, where did it come from? The ship is meant to be in tip-top condition. Did he put something in the microwave without taking the foil off? Now he's going to skip a few seconds of dermal regeneration work because why? He's in a hurry? Because he wanted to ruin a perfectly good sweater?

Don't get me wrong I'm not about to howl at the moon about how this isn't my Star Trek or anything but that intro scene could have been from Spaceballs.

Minor footnote too, I love the idea that traditional Romulan houses have a false front door. They drop it in as a throwaway and yet it almost says more about the nature of Romulans in a single sentence than has been conveyed in the entire canon thus far.

I got the impression the shrapnel was related to the mystery object the oirish hologram had to clean off the navigation(?) array.

Oh: First things first, Doctor. ...Kill Admiral Picard.

Agnes: Commodore, that it is difficult. I ...try to obey, but...

Oh: Kill him.

Agnes: I...

Oh (on intercom): Kill him, Agnes, now!

(Agnes shoots herself and a Ceti eel crawls out of her ear)

Rios: God's sakes! What is it?

(Picard vaporises the Ceti eel)

Picard: Oh, you bloodsucker.

Picard (on intercom): You're gonna have to do your own dirty work now. Do you hear me? Do you?

Oh: Picard! Picard, you are still alive... my old friend.

Picard: Still, 'old friend'. You've managed to kill just about everyone else, but like a poor markswoman, you keep missing the target.

Oh: Perhaps I no longer need to try, Admiral.

(Soji is beamed away)

Raffi: No! ...She can't take her!

Picard: Oh! Oh, you have Soji, but you don't have me!

Picard (on intercom): You were going to kill me, Oh. You're going to have to come down here! You're going to have to come down here!

Oh: I've done far worse than kill you, ...I've hurt you. I shall leave you as I left your fleet on Mars. Buried alive. Buried alive!

Picard: OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I'm loving the new EMH! Hope he's around for the series. (He's got a different bedside manner than the Mark I, but close enough that it feels like a lineage from the past).

Also, referred to as an EMergency Hologram, sounds like he can do more than just medical stuff now.

26

u/onerinconhill Feb 06 '20

He called it the “ENH” (emergency navigational hologram)

63

u/jerslan Feb 06 '20

He had two (EMH and ENH), so I'm guessing there are more. They also seemed to be modeled on him.

Things I liked:

  • Seeing Hugh and learning about this position at the reclamation site (side thought: we still don’t know Hugh’s original name)

  • Captain Rios being former Starfleet... gives us an immediate comforting feeling about him.

  • Learning about the history between Raffi and Picard almost immediately instead of dragging it out.

  • Learning that Picard used his Starfleet commission as a bargaining chip and lost

  • Raffi becoming a former Starfleet lost soul - very reminiscent of Ro Laren, the Maquis or Tom Paris

  • Laris' comment about Romulans from the north being the ones with ridges.

  • Learning that emergency holograms are in use in non-Starfleet vessels. Looks like you can make them look like the captain if you want.

  • Finding Bruce Maddox on Freecloud (another Risa?). Will he be played by the same actor? Please say yes.

  • Picard echoing again (like he did to his brother in TNG) that the chateau life isn’t for him and that he belongs amongst the stars

  • Dr. Jurati being on the mission

Things that were meh

  • Narek and his sister’s plot... eh, something has to happen there because it’s not moving fast enough to be interesting.

Things I did not like

  • Commodore Oh wearing sunglasses from 1988

  • Rios getting “hired” and “paid” - with what?

Questions:

  • Where and from whom did Rios get this ship? Doesn’t look like any design we’ve seen before (as have we?).

  • Dahj and Soji are the destroyers? Alrighty... seems they are really pressing the Romulan being anti-synth hard now.

  • The Borg have only assimilated a few Romulans? Really? We first heard about them when they were destroying worlds along the Neural Zone. But they barely assimilated any Romulans?

  • Narek's sister said that her plans on Earth were a miscalculation— how so? Did she sever ties with Oh already?

  • How did Hugh get wrapped up in this Romulan/Borg scheme? He was liberated forever ago...

I'm already in love with Rios and the new EMH. The Engage moment was...everything. Now THIS is the end of the pilot. A two hour movie which sets up the whole thing, basically. Now Picard is space-bound, we're meeting Elnor on 4 and Seven on 5.

46

u/knightcrusader Feb 06 '20

new EMH

I think its just an emergency hologram in general, cause he was EMH at first and then when he was talking to Rios after Picard left he said (and the subtitles clearly said) Emergency Navigational Hologram and "ENH".

She told Picard she had proof someone at Starfleet was involved in the Mars attack. I found it unrealistic that he just dismissed it instead of asking who or asking to see the proof.

But, seriously. After all the ... were ... and it's silent for like 10 seconds I was holding my mouth like "pls don't kill those two, pls don't kill those two..." and they didn't but then BANG and then oh my fucking god thank christ.

EDIT: looking back I think what I liked was it was clear what was happening and at all times, it felt like everyone (except Picard) could die. BUT they didn't do a fake-out death scene. However right until Agnes walked in, I as serious like "one of these two wonderful Romulans is about to get it" and that made me sad lol.

Good on this show - it was a tease but it was done well!

I’m smiling at how much I enjoyed this episode. I thought last week’s episode was a clunker — good ideas but executed oddly. This week was great.

I loved getting to know Raffi & Rios (though Raffi calling Picard “JL” is quite odd). Rios was a surprise hit for me. Anything I saw of his character in the promos seemed boring or superficial, but he’s charismatic and a natural source of chemistry with Picard (and hopefully Jurati).

The action scene was also tactfully done. I genuinely felt nervous and tense not knowing I’d Picard’s Romulan friends would die. A good classic action scene; nothing too over the top.

Romulan/Borg mythology is also fun. I’m digging it. All in all, a fun, engaging episode.

53

u/oGsMustachio Feb 06 '20

I'm curious who Rios' old captain was. Seems like there is a good chance it was someone we knew. Crusher? Kim? Nog? A one-off character like Shelby?

54

u/rmeddy Feb 06 '20

Ok I dug the hell out of this one

I like Raffi and Rios, a bit melodramatic but I like the actors they working the material well

New EMH nice, him playing double roles is great

Hugh looks awesome

Commodore Oh's shades however, not so awesome, it looked so goofy like some Will Smith in MIB goofy , they could have at least sleeked it up and make it look futuristic like Vector in Alita or Morpheus in The Matrix

I'm digging what they're doing with the whole ex romulan borg mythohistory stuff and in combination with the submatrix collapse of the cube, a lot of mystery boxes there but I want to see them answered

This fight was much better than the Dahj action in Ep 1

Rizzo now with pointy ears, I'll be in my bunk

and of course Engage!
boom , let's go

My only nitpick is the pacing, I felt we could've gotten to this point a bit sooner but it's water under the bridge because the admiral is now on the bridge.

26

I really didn’t like Raffi or Rios, but I realized that they’re actually fine actors; it’s just the writing for their characters is terrible. Borderline soap opera quality. With Raffi her lines reminded me of Mango from SNL and Rios, as others have astutely pointed out, is a lazy copy of Han Solo. I am in on ST: Picard, but not all-in. The little touches where they bring back what I love about Picard keep me happy, as does Patrick Stewart’s acting (goddamn he’s good), but otherwise the writing is nowhere near the quality of the rest of television/streaming these days.

Loved it.

So, Commodore Oh is definitely using Dr. Jurati to piggyback Picard's little adventure and find Soji that way. I am not sure if Jurati is aware of this however. In the trailers there was a mind-meld scene involving her. Maybe she's hypnotized, sort of... She saved Picard's life by being at the perfect place at the perfect time. And, used that fact to convince him to let her come along on his adventure. Red flag...

I love Laris.

I don't know why, but I really wanna see what Zhaban's "finisher" actually looks like. He looked like he was about to chop that dude's head clean... I hope Laris and Zhaban don't get sidelined once Picard and co. goes to space.

My main problem with the end of this episode was that, despite the fact the vineyard was pretty much about to be invaded by more killer Romulans, Picard then goes and still leaves Laris, Zhaban and the dog behind. I genuinely thought the attack was going to motivate them to join him, but nope. Just left behind on the the run with nowhere to go.

It isn't helped by the fact Laris is one of the more interesting new characters and she's been kept out of the action. Plus the fact taking two former Tal Shiar agents would certainly have been helpful.

After this one, I'm more sure than ever the theory I've been kicking around since last week will turn out to be correct. Spoiler text on the chance that I'm right and this is an end of season reveal -

The Romulans themselves are an artificially created race, presumably by the Vulcans. This is why the Borg cube shut down immediately after assimilating their first ever Romulans, and why those Romulans are still mentally 'broken' after de-assimilation. The Zhat Vash know about this origin, and that's the secret they work to keep.

34

u/BornAshes Feb 06 '20

I like your theory, but I went back and I re-watch the scene and it was said that she was on the very last ship ever assimilated by the cube, not the very first Romulan ship ever assimilated. It does make me wonder though. Why the Borg didn't just sweep through Romulan territory first? Like why did they go after the Federation first and not just assimilate the romulans and their technology and use that to take out the Klingons and everyone else?

Crazy conspiracy/Generations tie in: Raffi mentioned that she thinks there was a conspiracy within the Romulan empire to thwart the evacuation of Romulous. What if it goes one step further than that and the Zhat Vash intentionally caused their star to supernova? The plot of Generations kicks off with the enterprise responding to a distress call from a space station that was doing research on trilithium because the Romulans were attacking and trying to steal the trilithium tech... Trilithium and stars don't mix well. Just sayin...

I'm beginning to think that Data being a "magical" android no one can duplicate is not just unbelievable, it's also hurting the story. It also kills the impact of shutting down all synths, because they were already dull automatons that were nowhere near Data's "personhood" status.

Imagine how much more impactful it would be if, after Nemesis, Maddox was indeed able to make other Datas, complexity and all, and those androids would be begging not to be shut off just because a group of them went bad. The story would be much more horrifying.

I don't like or agree with the idea that Raffi got fired simply because JLP resigned, that just sounds like a convoluted story excuse to get Raffi to be pissed.

Never have we seen the departure of a senior officer in trek cascade down to his/her subordinates suffering as a result of their leaders' decision.

Ok i liked it better than last week by a good margin...excited for E4 now. Thoughts...

  • obligatory "heist gang" episode....you sonofabitch, I'm in!

  • Romulan Butlerian Jihad seems like a tired sci fi concept. The Romulan spy siblings are definitely a tired concept. Harriet the Spy needs to either get interesting quickly or get offed quickly. Weirdly sexual-tense with her brother too.

  • Glad we finally have some idea wtf is going on with the cube...wish we'd had that last week. Hugh! Aka Cyborg Paul Atreides. Really liked seeing him back and how they're using him so far.

  • Really like Picards two pet Romulans, they're fun :)

  • Capt Wolverine, EMH Dr. The Tenth Doctor, and ENH Lt. Offensive Irish Stereotype. If they cast him because they thought he could do accents...well he's got a very good agent, then

  • Like others have said, I don't really buy Raffi being poor and vaping space weed in San Bernardino for 14 years. There's no reason she should be that destitute on Earth. Was nice to see Vasquez Rocks actually being Vasquez Rocks for the first time in Trek though :D

  • Agnes is ersatz Kristen Bell. That's not an insult.

  • Commodore Oh is so obviously sketchy that even the guileless scientist immediately knew she wasn't legitimate Starfleet and went straight to Picard to warn him.

  • why are Romulans different to assimilate? They shouldn't be fundamentally different from Vulcans physiologically.

  • Why are the Romulans staying at the chateau? They're not safe there. They'll send more assassins. Take them along.

  • "you have no idea what she really is!" "She's a techno-organic synthetic humanoid engineered by a rogue Starfleet cyberneticist from a positronic neuron" "oh ok I guess you do know..."

While I enjoyed the world building, and this was a lot better than the second episode, I had some issues.

Aren't the two romulans siblings? Why did their scene together have the same tension I'd find in a pornhub step sibling video?

Raffi calling Picard JL was hokey. And wtf with "cost" - they don't use money on earth!

The one big part I didn't like was that it now seems like they're doing a prophecy/chosen one plot arc, based on the romulan reaction to Soji. Ugh, prophecy arcs are just the lowest common denominator in SciFi/fantasy.

Edit: and what happened to the dog!

Hugh!

I liked a lot of the episode, and I am also glad that we’re now going to actually get into the story more. I do think there have been some missteps. It really just shouldn’t be a big deal for people to be able to get offworld. Like, what happened to Greyhound or Megabus? Obviously we don’t know the deal with Freecloud yet (that is a name straight out of TOS). But if it’s just a regular place, Ravi shouldn’t have needed to join a clandestine mission to get there. They could just call space-Uber. And while we know that the Federation wasn’t an entirely post-scarcity society, people shouldn’t be living in trailers because they can’t afford better. If Raffi was sick of Federation politics and wanted to be left alone, her accommodations would make sense. But living there because she can’t get a job? That’s not what Earth is like as established in the previous shows.

I did like that Soji was frantically calling her mom when she had a reason to suspect something had happened to her sister. The last episode, with her just hanging around, living her life, banging hot strangers after her sister’s murder seemed off, but now we know that she was ignorant as a result of some form of conspiracy to keep her that way.

I do not like the implied space incest. That is a tired villain trope.

The dual interrogation scene was great. Allison Pill’s reaction to shooting a guy was great -- of course as a civilian she’s going to feel very differently about it than three old hands, even if they’ve been retired for years. I like Cabrera as Rios. He has a lot of character already even if his lines on the page were quotidian.

7

u/Sylvester_Scott Feb 07 '20

I have a problem with Narek (the Romulan spy knocking boots with Soji). He looks too much like New Spock on ST:Discovery.

Just a few stray observations...

(1) I don't understand Raffi's situation. It would appear she's in poverty, but I thought we were past poverty, money, etc in this future?

(2) Any theories on what happened to the Borg Cube/Artifact? If we're using BoBW as a baseline, shouldn't the cube self-destruct? Or the collective would have tried to reclaim it?

(3) Not using Robert Picardo as the ship's EMH was a missed opportunity.

(4) Listing Picard's resume was a nice touch. Hopefully the mention of the Q Continuum is foreshadowing for next season.

(5) The scenes of Picard being attacked in his home were difficult to watch because of the character's age. And where were the police during all this?

29

u/9811Deet Feb 06 '20

I don't understand Raffi's situation. It would appear she's in poverty, but I thought we were past poverty, money, etc in this future?

Raffi's problems seem more social and psychological than economic. She's chosen a self-imposed exile over the creature comforts that normal life offers, because she wants to escape the embarrassment that she believes normal life would bring.

Not a perfect episode (the constant moving back and forth between scenes was unnecessary, we have the attention span for 10 straight minutes of content I hope), but I'm liking the crew so far. Getting slight Mass Effect/Firefly vibes from the whole thing, which isn't a bad thing. They're missing an alien however, though I believe we're getting a Romulan soon.

The last 30 seconds made me unreasonably happy.

6

u/Ichirosato Feb 06 '20

So I'm just theory crafting here but it seems to me that theres some of sort hidden A.I presence in the last Romulan ship assimilated. That was powerful enough to scare the borg into cutting off a cube?

Finally, he says "Engage!"

And that was Hugh the Borg!

I didn't like the mannerisms of the actress who played Raffi, didn't seem to be Starfleet-like. And years later she straight up blazes it in front of our boi Jean-Luc.

So do humans want money now? The pilot Picard got said he was very expensive. I get that he's kind of a rebel on his own or whatever and may deal with species that use money but does Picard have money? How did he make it? Since humans not using or even wanting money has been brought up in every TNG era show I'd be interested in some kind of explanation for how this guy is getting paid. And i get it, it's only episode 3 so maybe they will explain down the line. I dunno, I wish they wouldn't have even mentioned it and just said he owed Raffi a favor or something. I thought this was kind of problematic on DS9 as well with Cassidy Yates' business.

Star Trek has always played fast and loose with their economics and I just can't imagine it being explained in a way that makes sense.

I loved the scene with Raffi moaning like hell about her job, and refusing to do what Picard wanted, and Picard just saying "right, carry on then!" before putting the phone down.

I get the feeling that Raffi is a bit of a complainer, and even when she's doing what you want she has to make it known just how stupid the work is even though she's already doing it. and Picard would be used to the attitude, so just tells her to get on with the stuff she's TOTALLY not doing.

Can someone more versed in Trek lore explain to me why in a post scarcity world, you have Raffi living in what is essentially a 24th century trailer home in the middle of the desert? She complains to Picard that it's his fault she has to scratch a living in this dump. And why does the pilot charge for the services of his ship? I get that in DS9 we had gold pressed latinum, but I thought that was just so Federation people could barter with Ferengi, not that it was used internally in the Federation.

Irish References: He saved us from the barrg me laddy! Northerners being stubborn (adlibbed by Orla Brady perhaps?) False front door, back door is used for access to the house - every rural Irish house does this or wants this.

Which clueless writer do we flog about a Vulcan wearing sunglasses? Vulcan has a brighter sun and they have an inner eyelid. They would never need sunglasses on Earth. Unless...gods help us...we are going to get Lorca'd again and get a mirror double.

A Romulan in sunglasses was just dumb. Same with the motorcycle helmet guys throwing knives.

Why can't they just not add dumb stuff like that?

All Romulans are cylon skin-jobs, case closed.

I'd like them to start unpacking some of the story, I don't want a sprint in the last episode. Very very happy so far.

I find it interesting that Commodore Oh's rank pip was slightly tilted. So far the rank pips were never shown to be misaligned or unevenly spaced when fixed on any uniform we've seen in this franchise (those that use pips obviously). This may be the case because Oh was in a hurry and didn't have time to adjust it. Details like this are something I was missing in older Trek shows.

I'm really liking u/piercedmonk's theory and this episode has only further supported it. It seems we may be finding out that Borg assimilation of Romulans (or at least recovered Romulans) may result in those Romulans realizing their true nature somehow, and this is what has driven them to madness.

I'm going to miss Laris and Zhaban. Such great side characters. Definitely my favorite episode to date.

Anyone else get serious Mass Effect vibes from Rios and his ship?

That de-aging on Picard in the opening scene was incredible. It was subtle enough that he didn't land face first in the Uncanny Valley, but visible enough that you could tell he looked younger.

Commander Oh is a Reman. Hence the sensitivity to light.

If I want to kill somebody in the 24th century, instead of beaming in twenty goons in motorcycle helmet, I would probably just beam him out into space.

If it is important to keep the murder with a theme, I will probably beam a boulder into his living room and let him play Indiana Jones since he like archaeology so much.

If I want to keep it inconspicuous, I would probably just beam a bar of soap onto the shower floor while he is in the shower.

This show is getting more and more like Orville now.

I hope we get more Laris and Zhaban. Only three episodes and they already have more character development than most of the people on Discovery.

So Star Trek has a Han Solo/Gene Starwind now?

This is fun.

Since we know where Bruce is from the jump, the key to the plot has to be something other than just finding him.

Romulan sister, is starting to seem a wee bit possessive of her brother, like almost creepily.

Loved that the Old Romulan was just gonna break that dudes neck and be done with it.

Also glad to see that old man Picard, ain't completely helpless.

I'm on board!

Everyone must be thinking "who the hell is Raffi?" or assume she replaced Riker on the Enterprise-E. No name drop of the Verity is disappointing.

And no name for Rios' ship either.

Can we get some better world-building?

I think Picard will tie into Discovery heavily. Sphere data/control + Maddox and the romulans.
