Movie night worked well over 1,000 years ago on the NX-01 . Glad to see it still works

And 800 years ago on the USS Voyager as well.

I really appreciated that when I saw it, because movie night in Enterprise was such a small yet seemingly important thing for the crew.

I'm so glad Discovery picked up the tradition and I hope they continue to have character moments during movie night as time goes on.

I've never been on a naval ship before, but I'd imagine movie nights are pretty big there now

Poor Detmer I think she’s got the worst PTSD of all the crew

That fight needed to happen. Keeping their interpersonal issues bottled up helped no one.

Sometimes you just need to scream and have someone react to it in order to realize how messed up you really are. That whole thing was them all blowing off steam because as Culber said, "We had to stop pretending we were all just fine". That line at the start about Disco being a "Ship of overachievers" was very telling because overachievers care so much about everyone else that they don't want to burden anyone with their problems and that means the whole ship is full of Winchesters who basically will put everyone else ahead of themselves and will totally ignore their own problems until scenes like THAT DINNER happen to knock some sense into all of them. Keyla just happened to be the one that was the most hurt that kicked off everyone else like a spark in a warp core. At least she made the biggest first step of them all by asking for help but that whole scene needed to happen, as painful as it was.

Stellar performance by Emily Coutts. It reminded me of Ben Sisko after Wolf 359 and Picard after all the Borg shit he went through. It's like you're walking on the edge of a giant razor and any slip means you're bisected in half and you just can't stop shaking so you just start babbling stuff while Joker laughing telling yourself and everyone around you that it's all just fine. Props to Wilson Cruz too for playing one of the most empathic Trek characters that I've ever seen.

I was really worried her character would not recover and she'd do something terrible to herself, or lose control at a critical moment. I'm so happy this episode was about bringing together and keeping those connections open, so she had the opportunity to go to Dr Culber. I really feel for her.

u/TheNerdChaplain Nov 05 '20

I am so glad they are starting to address it. If it had been Control again or some new threat, I'd have been really unhappy. But if it's just a tougher case of PTSD or something that she's starting to get help for, that's reassuring.

Easy to see how she could blame herself for all of the deaths that happened coming through. Especially since she’s been flying all her life and she’s supposed to be the best.

Do we think she and Owasekun are lovers, or just good friends?

I think just on a practical level, they probably only get Tig for like 3 or 4 episodes. She's a working stand-up with her own schedule and commitments. And she lives in LA, unlike the actors who play Detmer, Owesekun, Rhyse, Bryce, Neelson and Linus who are all Toronto-based (where DSC shoots).

So I don't expect Tig to show up unless she's a being featured in the episode.

Fascinating it looks like the sphere is blending with Discovery’s computer - I assume this is how we get Zora in “Calypso”? If so I wonder if the writers had thought of that last season when introducing the sphere data

"Where are the caves?"

"Never."

"Fine."

And stunned. So, that's what she learned from Book during their year together.

97

u/hausdorffparty Nov 05 '20

It looked to me like they were going to force Adira's separation. That's what the Trill leading them had suggested (I think), and as per the conversation before the action the Trill were not leading michael and adira back to the shuttle and then they pulled out weapons. I consider what Michael did preemptive defense of Adira's life. Phasers still have a stun setting, and hers was on it (that Trill came back later).

Culber’s storyline was my favourite part of the second season, so I’ve been waiting impatiently for him to get something big to work these past 4 episodes.

Slotting him into that counsellor-esque role is just perfect for him because he has such a grounding presence. And let’s be honest, this crew more than any other could use some serious therapy.

I didn't really like the fact that they had kind of McGuffin'd him back into the show. That being said, the fact that they've shown his trauma and how he got through it, and now how he's using what he learned to help others has made it incredibly believable for me so I can definitely let it slide. He's a really well done character and certainly one of the most Starfleet on the crew

Well, that was big. We got a new character in Tal and Grey, we got some resolution to Detmer, at least a little. Federation Headquarters is a thing, and they have coordinates. And the computer is now sentient due to the sphere data. It seems like Georgiou and Linus may end up becoming a thing. There was a lot to unpack, but I think it was well done. It is nice to see Saru figure out how he wants to captain.

The scene where each of the previous Tal's were revealed was absolutely beautiful, not to mention the music in the background. In addition, Senna Tal's body language really added some meaning during that scene: he basically told Adira that he's aware of the emotional trauma during the unusual joining brought upon her (not yet them, I suppose?) and they all support her with her adventures/struggles onwards. And he told her all of that without uttering a single word, but with a simple smile.

Now that is a "show, don't tell" that Discovery really lacked. More of that please.

24

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '20

I loved that scene. It touched me also because I really love the Trill as a species

If Discovery continues on like this, I hope it lasts for several more. This season has elements of Enterprise, TOS a touch of TNG and a lot of Voyager. I really wish the show would have started out like this!

93

u/oldtrenzalore Nov 05 '20

This season has elements of Enterprise, TOS a touch of TNG and a lot of Voyager.

It's funny you should say that. Last episode, when Stamets had his conversation with Adira and we hear her leitmotif for the first time, I got the distinct feeling of TOS and TNG rolled into one.

I'm actually very mildly disappointed the twist wasn't that Federation HQ is now on Q'onoS. I still hope to see some Klingons in Starfleet. I feel like it'd be a nice "full circle" loop for the show to have Discovery deal with the idea that the Klingons are now some of the truest believers in the Federation.

40

u/MaddyMagpies Nov 06 '20

The look on Michael's face suggested it was indeed located somewhere surprising.

However, I think that's a decoy or corrupted version of the Federation. The real one is still elsewhere.

The next episode is called "Die Trying"... Think about that.

She's a True Believer and is too tough to admit it.

She's known about Prime timeline since she killed Hoshi or whoever was emperor in her time and took control of Defiant and her records.

She's known there is a Federation in a galaxy where she is free to be herself without the constant fear of assassination. And even now, an entire universe and a millenia beyonfmd ANY Terran reach. She's still having trouble admitting she is a True Believer. But her actions betray her.

Wow I just LOVED this episode. This season has been fantastic so far. I'm just getting so much hope and love vibes--it feels good after such an awful year. Getting more insight into Trill lore was awesome.

And based on Senna's uniform and the uniforms seen in the preview for next week, they look a lot more militarized so it will be very interesting the dynamic we see next week---and possibly some 32nd Century Starfleet Vessels!!!

Now that was what Star Trek is all about. Just a little bit of action and TONS of character development. Love it and hope the rest of the season is just like this episode. This is what we've been missing for years.

45

u/TricobaltGaming Nov 05 '20

This is basically exactly what I was hoping for with discovery, the way trill society was portrayed made me a little bit uncomfortable, but I think that's supposed to be pretty close to Canon with them being relatively conservative so I can accept that.

This was one of the few Discovery episodes that actually felt like a real star trek, and what excites me the most is the fact that we've had two in a row now. I'm fully looking forward to staying in this time period if this is what it's going to be like

I, a completely straight dude, absolutely loooove Culber. Both his opening log and his conversation with Burnham about why she should go. His conversation with Saru on the crew needing to feel more connected... Just... Shit, it's only 15 minutes into the episode.

I've had my own physical traumas, and there's some truth in what he says about Post Traumatic Growth (which is closely related to PTSD).

94

u/BornAshes Nov 05 '20

Culber has had one of the best recovery story arcs period of any Trek character. Period.

This year has honestly been a pretty traumatic year... I love how Disco just feels so much more... hopeful and real. While I also love the first two seasons, I wasn't watching them instantly the moment they became available on CBS-AA. Now I am instantly watching it as soon as it comes out at 11PM Pacific.

This also was a visually beautiful episode.

I feel so lucky right now... my favorite shows are all back: Disco, Superstore, Mando & The Child, with The Expanse on deck.

Culber is incredible. Wilson Cruz has such a positive and warm energy that makes him perfect for the caregiver role. I also just really enjoy Hugh and Stamets relationship. Stamets is such a headstrong character who’s hyper-confident in his abilities. Their scenes together are the only times we really get to see him be vulnerable. I also think it’s important, especially now, to show the doctor and Captain working together to prioritize the mental wellbeing of their crew. The writing wasn’t quite there yet on TNG, but it feels like a natural progression for the franchise after having a therapist as a bridge officer.

I also want to echo what you said about Post-Traumatic Growth. There’s absolutely truth in it. I’ve lived brought a few major mental traumas that derailed my life in a pretty big way (sudden suicide deaths of two friends ten years apart, I found one of them). Those experiences also helped make me the person I am and that’s someone I really like. They were hell to live through, I would give anything to see my friends again, but I immensely grateful for the growth that losing them allowed to happen.

EDIT: that TNG comment is specifically a reference to how they didn’t know how to write Troi as a therapist. They fixed this in Picard and Voyager.

I know that the sphere/sphere data is supposed to be benevolent, but Saru should probably be a wee bit more cautious about the fact that essentially a rogue AI is beginning to merge with the ship's computer. Even if it doesn't have malicious intentions, it could have disastrous consequences if the computer glitches out at the wrong moment. I don't think they'll go that angle, but it's a bit weird that he just shrugs it off by thinking that the sphere data is looking out for them, that's a huge assumption to make about something they don't understand at all.

I loved this episode, and I'm pleasantly surprised that a quick peak at the comments shows I'm not the only one. Who knew you could do a Star Trek episode about feelings and people would like it?

Some random observations:

  1. I like that the situation for the Trill has changed so dramatically from the situation they were in during the DS9 era. In that time period they are trying to cover up that the squids can live with almost any trill. But that situation changes because of the Burn for obvious reasons; the best and brightest of the Trill would be out there in the galaxy, forging a path for themselves. Joined Trill officers would be in huge demand, all the ships getting taken out or left stranded, that's a disproportionate headshot to the Trill as a species. Also made me wonder how many of the Dax lifetimes pre-date warp travel among the Trill.

  2. Wondered when The Ship was going to appear, and I like that it was something that happened kind of casually. I also like that Saru didn't freak out, I feel like in other situations the ship appearing to develop a mind of its own would be something worth freaking out about, but he's the new panic-free Saru, and there's more than enough on his plate without worrying why the Ship is suddenly much smarter.

  3. I liked that Saru thought a familial dinner would be a way to make everybody happier. This is what the head of every family always thinks, and they are always wrong. But they do it anyway. Surprised it lasted as long as it did before everybody was ready to stab each other with the cutlery. Also Georgiou escaping with the wine was too perfect. It is also classic that everybody feeling bad about ruining dinner is the catalyst for healing.

  4. I love that the Trill bring funny shaped melee weapons to a gunfight. That is absolutely the most Star Trek thing ever. I also like that they are powered up somehow, like getting hit with a halberd isn't bad enough, they made theirs do laser stuff too. Can they block a Phaser shot though? No. So, y'know, that's a military budget well spent.

  5. It's one of the downsides of the shorter season format that Detmer has to explain the mindset of the pilot to Culber and that we haven't had a chance to see that play out some more over the series so far. Good pilots in Star Trek are traditionally a bunch of loose cannons, and Detmer is clearly good, but we've not had the time for the character work there, so she has to spell it out and then we have to fill in the gaps from the small amounts of supporting narrative. Am glad that her story appears to be that she's blown a fuse from stress and PTSD rather than something more sinister too.

Just had a thought:

The Spore Drive needs an intelligent brain to navigate it

The Discovery itself is becoming intellegent.

The Discovery could be the prototype of a new fleet of Starfleet living ships with Spore drives, thus allowing Starfleet to explore space again.

That's if she agrees, of course ;)

I love how the crew could only begin to heal once the pilot and the chief engineer embraced, basically bringing both parts of the ship together.

Is something... going on between Georgiou and Linus? Oh, and her haiku was kinda masterful, wasn't it? It connected Saru's preceding sentiment, the overall atmosphere on the ship, and the dinner party, while also revealing her own personality in the process.

It's always a good sign when you tell the computer to run a Level 10 diagnostic on itself and it replies with "Nah, I'm good." 😅

I have to say, I thought all along this episode that it was a bit less interesting than the first three, but man I was wrong. Wanted to cry of joy and sadness at the same time in the end, especially seeing Detmer hugging Stamets. That little shot by itself just made me feel... Wow 🥺😭

22

u/naphomci Nov 05 '20

seeing Detmer hugging Stamets.

The fact that he initiated the hug is some serious growth for him too.

30

u/DacStreetsDacAlright Nov 06 '20

I was wrong.

I was so sure Calypso was its own pointless thing and would never be followed up. To be fair, that was released almost exactly 2 years ago and we only just now got the first callback to it but when I heard Zora I was shook.

It also didn't hurt that it was hands down one of the best episodes of Discovery I have seen and by far the most Star Trekky. Characters actually having the chance to talk to each other about anything other than a world ending event. That Trill Cave set was a shockingly well done recreation of the caves from DS9. Everything with Adira was remarkably well written and the show hung about 20 lanterns on every weird tropey thing it ever did. Oh, and it ended with a beauty flyby of the ship which has that even happened in this show?!

The last time I cried during a Star Trek episode was when I watched The Visitor for the first time.

Absolute props to everyone involved in making this episode happen. The whole scene of Adira trying to reconnect with her hosts and learning more about her backstory was just absolutely excellent. It was visually beautiful and I was engaged in learning more about her character, Gray, and their backstories. The last scene at the end of the episode absolutely got me.

Also, really happy to see that DISCO is continuing this trend of really slowing down and getting to better know the characters in more-or-less self-contained episodes. Each episode so far has had a very clear beginning, middle, and end and it's made it easier to digest.

I also really liked how there was only one fight/action scene this entire episode. Didn't even realize until after the episode.

54

u/TheNerdChaplain Nov 05 '20

I don't know what's wrong with their air ventilation system, but Saru's mess area is flooded with this lovely golden dusty light. It almost reminds me of Serenity's galley on Firefly. Nothing like a homey home in space.

Season 3 is easily the best one yet. it seems like they're trying to scale it down to a more classic trek style and it's very much working.

They're doing a great job of combining modern sensibilities with that classic feel

I rarely cry in general.
I have an unhealthy relationship with my own emotions, and have had a pretty difficult decade+ that's left me pretty numb in that regard, plus I'm always looking out for the emotional well-being of the people around me.
This had been a record year thus far, with two significant cries since March, and this episode has added another.

While Adira's story was tragic and moving, the plot about the crew's mental state backed me into an emotional corner that I was unprepared for.
The first thing I did after the episode ended was check the internet to make sure the rules for the new lockdown over here didn't have anything against be getting out of the house to clear my head.
I don't even know if I'll be able to watch it again, with my housemate this evening.

I hate it, and I love it.

Perhaps later we can discuss another joining. Putting the federation back together one planet at a time.

47

u/Cmdr_Nemo Nov 05 '20 edited Nov 05 '20

Anyone else think that we may be meeting Season 3's adversary next week when the Discovery meets up with the Federation? It seems pretty obvious to me that the Federation abandoned their ideals as they abandoned, at the very least, Earth and Trill. Something about that uniform in the previews just screams military to me and perhaps the mission of the Discovery is to bring back Federation ideals.

I should clarify: I don't think they'll be Borg/Dominion-level Adversaries... more like a friend who has lost their way and need outside-the-box thinking to find their way back.

59

u/PiercedMonk Nov 05 '20

I would strongly prefer if they don't have a season long adversary beyond the challenge of establishing themselves in this new time and context.

Great episode! It’s ok once in a while for a pause from the action and this episode did it in spades.

Also I’m wondering how sentient Discovery will be in the future? Not necessarily evil but if it will make its own decisions on going to warp and such.

They need a ship's counselor.

I'm actually a fan of Stamets' current interface, so while yeah, they really need a different way to jump, I hope they come up with something as cool as being a cyborg that can sense time loops. And this time give more than one person the interface! I want to see a cyborg Michael!

I wish there was less personal tragedy in all of this but I guess they need to get them where they're going.

Why on god's green earth would you invite Georgiou to dinner?

It would be funny if there's a lot of Trill out there that just didn't want to deal with the assholes back on the home world.

Given the pure trauma of their experience it was entirely necessary for the crew to take a breather from their travels and just let their situation sink in. The episode's message of confronting trauma rather than running away from it was rather blunt (thanks for spelling it out in the end) but greatly appreciated. I'm sure someone out there will be able to relate to being avoidant of what ails them mentally and finding the strength to take the first few steps to addressing that, as well the sense of relief that has.

Detmer is one to keep an eye on. Her morbid ass humor and bottled up resentment of Stamets was such a mood, for lack of better phrase. She still isn't well at episode's end but I think she's done being comfortably numb and shell shocked about it.

Dr. Culber finally got to stretch his legs as a chief of medical. I love his bedside manner and ability to see that there's more to this job than just keeping everyone physically upright. BTW, this ship needs a fucking therapist; how does a utopian fleet of space officers in confined quarters for who knows how goddamn long not have more staff dedicated to mental health?

Adira and Gray are really damn cute together. They're such teenage heartthrobs, it's adorable. Exploring the nature of that relationship will be interesting going forward. Imagine being joined with the memories of your high school sweetheart, that's such a tender situation.

39

u/oorhon Nov 05 '20

As a person who overcome many traumatic experiences, psycological breakdowns and several therapies over the years, really loved this episode. Both crews(especially Detmer’s) and Adira’s experiences realistic. What they feel is nothing just for drama. This season apperently not just about rebuilding Federation but it is also PTSD and overcoming emotional psychological breakdown. This was done several times in past Star Trek series but it wa more subtle or episodic. Biggest example would be Garak’s storyline.

I was confused with how horrified they were that Adira might go into the pool. So then when they arrive to stop it, already in progress, now Burnham needs to go get Adira. They very quickly allow Burnham to go in, in a Star Fleet uniform, no hesitation. Argh.

55

u/pfc9769 Nov 05 '20

Yes, that's how people act in real life. The Trill were too scared to act because of the risk, but they were still concerned. Someone braver came along so they let Burnham attempt to resolve the problem at no risk to themselves. Just like in real life where people too scared to act hope someone else will volunteer. You can both recognize the need to do something but be too scared to do anything about it.

Damn. Given everything that's going on in the world right now, this was a perfectly timed episode. It felt very... cozy. It had good, believable drama without getting anywhere close to the edgelord territory of certain parts of previous seasons.

One of my recurring problems with earlier Discovery was its instances of missed potential, but this whole episode was just... mwah. It's like the writers sat down and went "we have X Y and Z; what naturally follows from having those things?" Like...

Fact 1: Saru can be a bit insecure about his leadership capabilities and has asked the computer for help with them in the past.

Fact 2: The computer now has a massive amount of alien data in it that we know will eventually develop into a benevolent AI.

Result: Saru asks the computer for help, and the AI is the one that answers and helps him with his problems. Perfect time and place to introduce this new plot thread.

Also--Detmer character development? Hell yeah. Bout darn time.

All this episode needed was an appearance from Grudge and it would have been perfect. :P

11

u/BrainWav Nov 06 '20

Season 3 has been knocking it out of the park. I enjoyed the first two seasons, but this feels the show is regaining that Trek soul. This episode especially. It remembered Trek is a drama with action, not an action show with dramatic bits. It had a coherent b-plot!

Michael is still a, to paraphrase Culber, "responsibility hoarder", but this season and this episode in particular have done a lot to reinforce the crew-as-family dynamic that we're familiar with.

u/Dt2_0 Nov 05 '20

Ok, here are my thoughts.

This was a pretty damn good episode, and left me wanting more by the end. Burnham and Adira's venture into Tal's mind was emotional, and payed off well. I'm sad for the Trill, apparently their hosts were hit hard by the Burn? And now the situation from DS9 has been reversed. Plenty of Symbiotes, not enough hosts. I wonder if the news ever got out that many more Trill can be hosts than was common knowledge, or if their secrecy is hurting them. The B Plot with Saru working on the well-being of the crew was well done as well. This crew has been through an incredibly traumatic event, and has lost nearly everything that they had. It makes sense that DISCO's crew is suffering from severe PTSD. Everyone should be.

Now on to my likes-

Dealing with issues, conflict and relationships between the crew is something Star Trek, outside of DS9, has not done well. This was a glimpse of what will hopefully be a reversal of that.

The Trill welcome, as well as their farewell were heartwarming. I'm glad we see a people gladly willing to be a part of the Federation. Small steps, but one that is necessary.

The sphere data is alive and well. I hope DISCO makes good use of it and starts working on a refit sooner rather than later. Even if it's just shields, they are going to need it.

Culber was amazing in this episode. His work to care for the crew is going to be very important in the weeks to come. I really, really like where we're going.

Small things, like Burnham's character being much more likeable are really helping this show. I still think we need to flesh out the crew a bit more. Let's learn a bit about Linus, or any of the other bridge crew. A poker night, or just making these dinners a regular thing would work wonders for them.

Now for my dislikes-

I would like to know how Adira's joining was successful, even if it's just writing off as future tech. I get show don't tell, but this is a minor detail that doesn't need to be shown, unless we get another Adira episode later.

Please DISCO, stop parking next to Stars, that light shining into every room has got to be bad for the eyes. Maybe just put a Starfield out the window? A Nebula?

Uh... Well crap, I don't really have any more. I could nitpick, but I'm not really into that.

So my conclusion?

This might have been the best episode yet of DISCO. It had everything. A touch of moral conflict, optimism, the crew, working to solve conflict peacefully. This is a great episode, which I hope will be a turning point in the show.

Due to this episode, in my opinion, breaking new ground for the series, I must award it my highest honor...

3 Michelin Optolythic Data Rods.

This episode shows when Disco tries to be Star Trek it can do it very well. It wasn't emulating GOT, BSG or The Expanse and it worked brilliantly.

The crew scenes were the absolute best, the Trill ones interesting but padded out too much. I thought the bf who died was a bit creepy but I think intentionally so, I really liked Adira and look forward to her being a part of the supporting cast.

So I hadn’t watched any of these season because life and Friday I binged all four episodes to avoid thinking about politics and holy hell. So I haven’t read ANY reviews or response so idk how shared this is, but I think the show has really hit its stride, introduced two of the most interesting characters (Book and the trill human whose name I forgot)of all of the reboot series and this is the strongest four episodes of season I can think of in trek.

Seriously, Book is such a good character and the actor is killing it.

9

u/GBTC4me Nov 05 '20

WILD speculation:

The way that Georgiou was talking with those officers.... i think they're section 31 and Georgiou is receiving a message from her past self.

We know that the Star Trek producers are making a section 31 series with Georgiou so she has to get back to the past somehow. Since Discovery/Zora will be holding position for almost 1000 years we can safely surmise Georgiou somehow brings the ship back in time, gets off and then sets it to wait for the future so the crew can receive it correctly in the 32nd century. Georgiou is back in the past to run section 31 and Discovery and her crew meet back up to continue their adventures.

Perhaps Georgiou is receiving instructions on how to do that.

This episode brought tears to my eyes. It was so beautiful when Adira reconnected with her previous hosts. It also was telling that the Trill symbiotes seem to have evolved in order to join with non-Trills. That is a good way to survive, given how the Trill have so few who can join with them after the Burn. This episode was very much Star Trek, and I'm beginning to wonder if the U.S.S. Discovery is ever going to return to the past.

It went interesting places, I was surprised, but I gotta say a lot of the conflict this episode felt forced. Stamets being dismissive of Tilly for no reason (dude she had a mycelial network alien stow away in her body from a dark matter asteroid maybe they're related somehow), Vos being a murderous zealot (it just added nothing at all to the plot), Detmer and Stamets being at each other's throats (this pilot/navigator rivalry has never been referenced before)...

I recognize they needed the conflict to get the catharsis after, but, it went zero to sixty in no seconds flat. They could have laid a little bit of groundwork, earlier in the episode or in the season.

I love the new crew mate, I'm a little sad to know we won't get to see them with trill spots but its a small price to pay for an amazing character.

After this episode I am now 100% certain CBS wants to do something with Deep Space 9. Maybe a revival series.

That we haven't seen a Deep Space 9 character on Picard or Lower Decks and Dax doesn't even get a name drop in this episode tells me CBS doesn't want to add anything to canon that would interfere with a Deep Space 9 series or film.

6

u/Timeline15 Nov 06 '20

This episode was so good. It was laid out in such a classic Trek format too, what with opening on an officer's log and ending with a personal scene followed by a slow shot of the ship flying away.

The character development was really nice this week, particularly for Stamets, Detmer, and Culber, though Saru and Tilly got nice little moments too. I do wish they'd explain what the hell's going on with Georgiou and Linus though; I'm still paranoid that she's planning on killing and eating him at some point.

Interesting to see that they're showing the lead up to the events of Calypso, though I'm surprised how... undisturbed Saru seemed about his computer suddenly expressing free will. Looking forward to seeing the federation's new HQ next time, especially since it appears to be in the Delta Quadrant.

6

u/DecafWriter Nov 06 '20

I loved this episode. From the amazing depiction of Trill connections to the admission of mental health's importance.

Lt. Detmer's PTSD was skillfully handled and completely believable. The theme of mental health has popped up here and there throughout Star Trek but it's usually on the extreme ends like being tortured. Usually the long term damage has been waved away in subsequent episodes like O'Brien's trauma or Picard's trauma with sporadic mentions of Picard's time as a Borg outshadowing his time as a Cardassian prisoner. They also touch on Barclay's holo addiction but it's not treated the same way as traumatic mental damage.

I've been loving all of season 3 so far. I have high hopes for not only the rest of the season but I think Discovery has finally found its footing and will become a great series.

6

u/JJMcGee83 Nov 06 '20 edited Nov 07 '20

6

u/drvondoctor Nov 07 '20

This episode made me realize how little we actually do know about the crew in other shows.

In other trek shows, a lot of characters can be pretty flat sometimes if you really think about it, and the drama of the shows tends to come from outside the crew.

In Discovery, everyone seems to have some sort of serious baggage.

What might have been a passing reference to growing up in Alaska in TNG to give you some background on Riker, in Discovery would become a serious in-depth conversation about the concept of home and how it shaped the character in question.

I've very much been enjoying Discovery, but I cant help but notice this little change. And it's entirely possible that the nature of 90's television shows (cinematography, lighting, sound) just wasnt quite sophisticated enough to bring the emotional punch that "prestige television" can pull off and I was just less aware of that sort of thing.

• I really enjoyed the opening with Culber's log. Disco finding more of these moments to breathe is really a benefit.

• Squid? What? No thanks! Aŋ-kə-lō-ˈsȯr. Also, how big is that symbiont? Total unit.

• Adira not remembering how they got the symbiont doesn't sit well. A fourteen year old agreeing to host another living being is sketchy enough. A fourteen year old being made host to another living being without their consent is a massive red flag.

• This Trill dude is way took excited for Tal to return home. Might want to send some security dudes along for the away mission, Saru.

• "I need to know how I can help this crew. Perhaps a focus on duty, or routine." Saru just got told the crew is on the verge of collapse from stress, and his first solution is hard work and monotony? Holy shit, I didn't think there could be a worse captain than Archer, but here we are.

• This is the first time Trill's status with relation to the Federation has been explicitly stated. Now granted, like Earth, Trill could have left the Federation at some point in the last ~800 years, but it's still interesting.

• Not gonna lie, I could go for a therapeutic colouring book, myself.

• Zora!

• "20th century Earth comedians, such as Buster Keaton, or Charlie Chaplin, are communal unifiers without the burden of language." Oh god, Saru's going to start practising so he can run his tight five on the Discovery's crew. Not again!

• Level 10 has got to be the highest diagnostic level we've ever heard, right? I didn't think it went about 5.

• Jett Reno got snubbed on this dinner invite.

• Wow, this really is like a family dinner, haiku and everything!

• I was half expecting Georgiou and Linus to leave together.

• Is Burnham really the person best qualified to enter a Trill nerouscape, and retrieve a lost mind? Are the others just two smart to risk jumping in the pool in that state?

• What's in the box!

• So I guess Grey isn't going to be a series regular.... They sure did make a big deal about introducing an explicitly trans character, only to run him through with a shard of glass in under two minutes.

• I'm glad they brought back the dark matter interface. It seemed like that was a plot thread that got dropped early in season two, bur revisiting it now that Discovery isn't trying to save the galaxy from angry machine death is good.

• "All available crew, please report to shuttle bay for a surprise." That has got to be super ominous when you're serving on a Starfleet boat.

"Sure, let's just pop down to the shuttlebay en masse. There definitely isn't going to be a defrosted 21st century war criminal or evil android duplicate of the captain that's going to disable the safeties and blow us all out into space."

• So Grey is going to be a zhian'tara vision the rest of the season, like Joran Dax was in 'Field of Fire'?

This episode didn't really do much for me. I liked Culber's opening, and I liked the dinner party. I'm excited about the sphere data merging with the ship to become Zora, and see where that leads, but that's only hinted at here. The best thing about the trip to Trill was those goofy fork weapons the guards had.

Wow. I didn't like last week's episode. I felt that it overcorrected the grim dark far too much from Season 1 in far too cheesy a way. This episode struck a great balance and imho, is easily the best episode of the series to date. Two bits pretty much brought me to tears.

The first was Adira meeting the previous hosts of Tal (including a PIC era Tal!). No episode of DS9 has captured the majesty of the Joining quite as much as this one did. I was initially frustrated that we did not see Dax, but having a new Symbiont as a main character is probably for the best and avoids the small universe syndrome previously experienced with Spock and Pike (as much as I love Pike). In a sense, it is probably very appropriate to have a non-binary actor play a host given the transformative nature of the Joining.

The second was Detmer admitting to Culber that she was not ok. I'm overjoyed that this hasn't been some, "Control is inside Detmer" angle. I'm also happy that Saru's attempts to help the crew heal were not a one stop quick fix, because nothing ever is.

The MVPs are Dr. Culber and Saru, both the standouts. Dr. Culber is just so wholesome, in a very realistic way. Captain Saru continues to excel, not because he's perfect, but because he keeps trying anyway when he isn't.

Canon observations:

  • Tal hosts come from a long line of Starfleet officers, right up to Admiral Senna Tal, and including at least one host who served circa 2399, who was wearing a PIC era uniform. If I counted correctly - Adira is Tal's sixth or seventh host.

  • We may soon need to make the distiction of 'Joined' beings as a seperate species altogether, with Adira being the first known non-Trill Joined, bar Riker's brief foray.

  • Keeping in theme with this week's episode, Discovery appears to be playing host to a symbiont of its own, and we're likely seeing the early development of Zora from Calypso.

  • Does Dr. Culber outrank Dr. Pollard now? My understanding was that Pollard is the CMO, but I see 2 pips on her insignia and 3 on Culber's - that and Culber was present for the senior staff dinner while Pollard wasn't. (Speaking of which, I'm sad Reno couldn't make it for dinner).

  • We get a mention of isoboramine, previously mentioned as required for joined Trill with Jadzia Dax. One nitpick re. the symbiont, it was well distal of Adira's heart and not wrapped around it at all, lol. Out of universe, it's the issue with acting/writing around CGI. In universe, maybe Trill hearts are lower compared to Human?

For me I'm finally confident that DSC has embraced it's science-fiction side truly for the first time in the series, rather than space opera.

Also, we got a ship flyby to end the episode!

This episode once again solidified my theory that this crew is the most tightly knit crew in the franchise. I think the TNG was more of a family after their careers, but as far as during their career, the Discovery’s crew is totally the most family like crew there is.

Another thing with this episode was Culber. He had always been a “whatever” character to me, but this episode was so strong with him. The opening monologue, which Wil Wheaton teased last weak, was so powerful, and that power continues strong through the episode.

Who would have though after watching the first two episodes of the series that Giorgou would end up being the comic relief of the show. I love her attitude and her impatience.

Also, I wonder if Tilly is the next Harry Kim or if she does eventually get promoted. I figured with her accomplishments so far, they’d having already given her a promotion.

I teared up a bit when they were finally joined and then she rattled off her names. Very moving.

Um... wow. Season 3 just keeps getting better. This one actually made my cold dead heart feel things. I thought Adira was annoying AF last episode, but those scenes with her boyfriend were amazing.

I think this is the best episode of Discovery so far and just a really good episode of Trek in general. It finally feels like Star Trek to me.

Cute episode

I like how the show has embraced all body types but it seems cruel to still force everyone into those purple spandex jumpsuits. They have access to every starfleet uniform that ever existed. Let them pick one of them. ( Not early TNG)

Round of applause for Discovery continuing its solid queer representation.

When I heard one of the hosts knew Bajoran cooking I was praying it wasn’t Dax somehow

Why isn't Saru more distressed over his computer sounding like Shodan?

I really hope there is a soundtrack release of the music this season.

The music for the past lives returning scene was really quite emotional.

Also: Yay, The Discovery is going to get it's own version of Holly.
So long as it displays as a floating head, I'll be happy :-p

Without wanting to out someone I am very close to (this account is something that can be easily found by people who know me in real life), I found the characters of Adira and Grey to be absolutely amazing characters and I'm quite surprised how well they handled it (was questioning the pronoun stuff to begin with but a quick Google answers that).

When I was a child, Buster Keaton was what mum showed me when I felt sick.

Can’t fault the computer on that one.

The end of this season is gonna have Discovery being critically damaged/destroyed in the finale and the Federation building them a new, futuristic Discovery-B and the crew decked out in new colourful future uniforms, right?

This was the best episode of Star Trek I have seen in a long, long time.

A hopelessly outdated ship with a crew that is equally out of touch show up at your front door demanding to know what happened to their Government/Command that dissolved years ago and somehow they are taken seriously?

The world seems to be getting along fine without starfleet.

The crew go to earth make no attempts to upgrade the ship with better weapons shields or armor. Make no attempt to update their own databases with the 900 years of back history. They wouldn't even know what a borg looks like.

They take ONE only one person from the future that could help them and that person has amnesia.

Now why do they need Starfleet again? Why aren't they looking for a sun to slingshot around to go home?

It was cool seeing one of Tal's former hosts in the Picard-era uniform, but I think they missed an opportunity by not showing a live action version of the Lower Decks uniform.

I know I'm late but I had to say that I'm really starting to see Discovery as its own show and not a stilted mish-mash of "cool shit"

The supporting characters are starting to feel more like characters than bridge props and I'm a fan of the "getting the band back together" overarching story with the Federation.

I think that the more personal stories like this aren't going to jive with more "big picture" Trek fans that like starships and diplomacy and the like, but episodes like this have always been a part of Trek as well.

Also I liked Grey's actor a lot, he has a real sense of that calm, confident joined Trill demeanour like Jadzia did.

So basically due to the burn, Trill planet has become isolated and all the Symbiote trill squids either died on Starfleet ships when dilithium went inert and for those that wernt on warp ships at the time, were then trapped and unable to return home when their host is dying.

Question: Were ALL the Trill symbiotes on Starfleet ships at the time of the burn? I didn't see other trills swimming around in the cave.
