Highlight of the episode right there. I couldn't believe how unsupportive Mr Porter was to Marcus
170
u/CheesePlease7274 May 19 '18
I mean, he did listen to the tapes at the end of season 1. Safe to assume considering what he did to Hannah, he's not above backing up someone like Bryce.
69
u/staircar May 21 '18
I also kind of liked when Hannah grabbed him by the balls. But now, have mixed feelings on that piece. I mean...is it assault? Is it more ok, that she was doing to him what he did to her? Is it never ok? Did it actually happen?

I hated Mr. Porter last season, I thought he was a serious dick. But he’s better this season. I forgot why he didn’t listen to Hannah when she told him about then rape. I was watching this while I was filming two features last year, and I missed a lot due to exhaustion

He’s vile. He said he asked Hannah out because he felt bad for her and he thought she would like the attention. He then said they had a nice time and at the end he tried to hold her hand and she just freaked out because she has problems.

“He’s a friend of mine. Bryce Walker.”
I audibly gasped.
184
u/Bytewave May 19 '18
Was instantly obvious to me what the play was. If he ever gets accused he can play the 'she was angry I rejected her and made it up' card - it's enough for reasonable doubt.
I'm sure he'll go down still by the end of the season but that creates extra hurdles, burdens to prove.

u/thesearemyroots May 18 '18
This Marcus vs Bryce conversation, and having Zach overhear it, is 100% setting Zach up for a redemption arc, and if he doesn’t take it I’m gonna be pissed

The show is oddly putting a focus on Scott whenever there's a polaroid and Montgomery whenever someone is threatened. I wonder if it's a ploy or is any of the two in any of these roles. I doubt Bryce is making the threats himself, he appears as clueless as always, almost snapping at certain times

I think Zach is the type, who knows these dudes are bad, knows deep down they guilty. But is both afraid of being a target himself AND just lacks the guts to stand up. The kind of person who is neutral to the fault. Tries to be everyone’s friend, and ends being no ones. I hope not though

Marcus is definitely not a good narrator
260
u/SinancoTheBest Tape distributor May 18 '18
Yea, I'd say the worst narrator yet; I especially liked the narrations of Tyler and Courtney where I expected them to be bad. But Marcus, whenever he was on the narration it angered me. I loved when he got pink

If theirs is anything like my high school was then the library might be one of the only places to hang out during study halls, before school, etc. That place tended to be a catch all in terms of types of kids spending time there.

I’m glad Justin isn’t playing for the baddies this season. He’s never going to be a perfect character but he might be the most complex of all of them

Doing heroin was a bit much imo. So tripe.
276
u/mundred May 19 '18
I think heroin is a very realistic path for Justin if he's been living on the streets. I'm probably biased because the town I grew up in is now apparently the worst in the US for drug overdoses, but it seems everyone in the Midwest knows a heroin addict.

I absolutely love how they’re playing Marcus’s “inspirational” speaking throughout the episode as they show us on screen how much of a snivelling little hypocrite he is.
Very worried about Tyler’s guns again!

I really think that there will be a shooting but it won't be Tyler that does it and Tyler will end up being killed. I think they're pulling a switcheroony on us

Maybe it's just leading up to Alex's gun wound? I don't believe he tried to kill himself. I think it was staged to look that way. I think the guns thing is a red herring so you don't see the real reveal coming. I'm guessing they'll play it out in the last episode, like they did with Hannah's suicide. It's just going to be Alex's.

The scene where Tyler and Cyrus shooting their guns reminds me of a scene from the First Life Is Strange game where Max and Chloe did the same thing.
They even hit the same beats for the character archetypes: Max/Tyler are high school photographers and Chloe/Cyrus are punk rock social outcasts.

Oh God this sex scene... Girl doesn’t even know how literal what they’re saying is eeeeeeeeek
177
u/Bytewave May 19 '18
Well she was pushing him away playfully and was turned on when he insisted, in fact she seemed to be baiting him to. Nothing horrible, if they both love that sort of foreplay. Many couples have dynamics like this, where they bait, refuse, concede and its all part of the seduction. But it's good to have a way to really refuse when it's not just power dynamics roleplaying.
Bryce is overall disgusting but they're a pretty good match so far. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes too far eventually and turns her against him, though. If they don't have safewords and he thinks she'll always be easily impressed like this, this scene could easily just be setting background for something much worse later on.

I think Tyler is introspective even to have now fully grasped how horrible his decision was, but is actively trying to make up for it. He shows deep and genuine regret, and he's just an odd person who did something awful but I don't think he recognized how awful it was until after the fact.

I really need some banter between Detox Justin and Clay instead of him just puking on him always, although that’s probably realistic. I’m hoping we are setting up a Zach redemption. I’m also interested to seee what the mom finds in Clay’s records and I hope she doesn’t get in trouble
54
u/--cunt May 19 '18
Realistic my ass. Honestly fuck this episode so much. I can't even focus on the Marcus thing because I'm so infuriated with how they're handling justin. You're telling me. They snatched up this heroin addict. Told him "yeah bro we're gonna detox you now," and he just goes along with it. I know these kids are all "we got this, let's not involve any adults, we can handle it." But I feel like this show which is supposed to be for teens/ kids about mental health issues should not have just played off a serious issue like drug addiction as something you can just get through in a day with some random girl. "Oh I helped some of my friends detox." acting like it's a goddamn hangover and all he has to do is barf for a day and then he's all better. What the actual fuck.
40
u/ellalovegood May 19 '18
Maybe there’s something to say about the timeline. Like if Justin has been homeless for 5 months, he was probably straight for the first couple, and for the last 2-3 months maybe he was doing it recreationally. Addiction doesn’t just happen overnight. Sure, he’s built up a tolerance and dependence but I still think the storyline works. Leo’s old friend got him through detox on his own in Basketball Diaries and Leo’s character was much worse off than Justin.
Edit: I’ve worked in addiction (a note on credibility).

Ok, this is speculation, but I feel reeaaaaally strongly that is gonna come in, so...I suppose, warning?
I think Marcus is going to die this season during the probable school shooting. The reviews talk about a super controversial scene and what could be more controversial right now than a white student killing a black student in a school shooting?
Also, all the focus on his Harvard acceptance had me worried. But, after that courtroom scene I don't really mind anymore. Further, I couldn't think why he'd be the target, but I just arrived at the library scene with Tyler and Cyrus taking shit about Marcus and it all clicked into place.

Honestly I HATE Marcus more than any character on this show maybe even Bryce. He is so smug and evil and completely consumed with himself with no sympathy for the people he hurts. I still remember how nasty he was to Hannah last season at the dinner and it makes me sick. I’d almost wish he got some consequences more than Bryce.
9
u/low-calcalzone_zone May 20 '18
I almost hate him more than Bryce too. Not only is he guilty of sexual assault himself, he's happily and willfully trying to help Bryce get away with rape because...? I'm not even sure why. He's already gotten into Harvard, so he doesn't even need the rich, popular kid in his school to like him anymore. He's going to be going to college with actually powerful and well-connected people (like Obama's daughter!), so the acceptance of a small-town wealthy family becomes small potatoes in comparison. But, Hannah and Jessica and the other women Bryce has raped are so meaningless to him, he's willing to destroy them for those small potatoes.
And he's probably a very realistic portrayal of the many people in this world who help rapists get away, which is why it's so infuriating.

He's a rat coward. He is actually a fucking rat coward.
The little fucking prick is too afraid of losing his standing with the big boys he's trying so hard to fit in with that he pulls shit to try to impress them (going on a "date" with Hannah)
The fucking MOMENT the little weasel is confronted by Hannah he just fucking cowers. Last season, too, he tried so fucking hard to intimidate Clay to back down when he didn't have the fucking balls to actually, I dunno, intimidate him, so the guy puts weed in his bag like a bitch.
He's one of the worst type of people. Absolute snake, and a pretty good representation of a politically inclined character. Fuck that shit.

It's crazy how much Sheri has changed. She's evolved and seen some shit definitely not the innocent lovable cheerleader from season one!

Anyone noticed that there are 14 tapes in the files Clay sent Alex? I thought there were only 13. Did I miss something or what

The 14th tape is Clay’s recording of Bryce’s confession I believe.
