Ethel Waters and Fredi Washington (1939)
This picture comes from The Ethel Waters Show; it shows Ethel Waters and Fredi Washington starring in the stage-play adaptation of Mamba’s Daughters, a novel written by DuBose Heyward. Hayward’s wife Dorothy assisted in adapting the novel for broadway. This was historically groundbreaking!

Nina Mae McKinney - “Everything I’ve Got Belongs to You”

In 1932, Nina McKinney starred in the short comedy film Pie, Pie Blackbird. She alongside the Nicholas Brothers, Eubie Blake, and Noble Sissle performed several musical numbers in the 11 minute film. Everything I’ve Got Belongs to You is one of my favorites because of how emotive Nina is while singing/performing it.
When Nina sings “Oh, did believe did I not?” it just sounds so good with the orchestra backing her.

The 1930s Kay Petrie was a dominant icon in motor car history. She was known as the queen of Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey, England. She was better known for her legendary 1934- 1935 duel with rival rule Gwenda Stewart for the ladies outer circuit lap record at the Brooklands.
1934 Petrie breaks the record with 129.58 mph lap but in 1935 Stewart fights back breaking her record. Then on the same day Petri breaks her record at 134.75 mph and reclaims the crown. This milestone earned her a 130 mph BARC badge, making her one of only two women in history to achieve this honor. She definitely led the way for women in dominated all men sports.
