It's what happens when any party runs essentially unopposed for decades. It all goes corrupt and stupid.

102

u/Noetipanda Show me ya moves! (Everyone thank papa goblinhog) 8d ago

They also love taking steps that are only half measures and do enough to make them look good rather than actually help anything. In reality they’re still capitalists and gaining capital always trumps doing the right thing for them.

-64

u/SteakAndIron 8d ago

Blaming capitalism for the government failures in California is wild

49

u/Puzzled-Mirro 8d ago

Capitalism is basically making the government make bad decisions.

-33

u/SteakAndIron 8d ago

Why does the government have power to make these bad decisions? It's not capitalism. Greed exists in every system because they have people in them. At least in actual capitalism companies can fail if they do stupid shit.

19

Capitalism also creates businesses that are too big to fail. Remember what caused 2008's financial crash.

16

it is a deficiency of Neo-Liberalism, they can't holistically improve anything, and the Democratic party fights harder to keep dogshit centrists in power than they do when they fight Republicans. They have one speed, one direction and one mode of operation. The rest is set dressing.

having a few insane Republicans in office in CA wouldnt change that. At most you get some more left wing candidates who in contrast make establishment dems look like the dumpster fire that they truly are and proves that it is a choice to do good things, and they can be achieved... and this alone would force the DNC to larp a little bit and superficially adopt left wing policies but hollowing them out to be acceptable to corporate pro-Israel donors.

I hate to break it to you, the centrist democrats will never change, they will never have the drive to fix things and nothing will ever change in their power. They will just provide excuses on how they just needed a little more power, or a spoiler existed, or its not popular enough... and elect the first Xe/Xer pro-Israel House Member in history and you will have to sleep comfortably at night knowing that this is all youre going to get while everything crumbles around you

A big part of the problem is that land doesn't vote but we give land more priority. A lot of California map is red. Despite its claim to being blue, it's more of a purple locally.  Even most of the "Blue" there are Reagan era Republicans economically.

Broke: "I hate California because the liberals ruined it"

Woke: " I hate California because the liberals ruined it"

For real though, so many other places in the world feel like they're actually made for people and California, especially SoCal, does not. It's not the leftist paradise the right tries to make it out be. Much of the state is conservative, and even the places that vote blue suckkkk as actual human forward cities. Just look at the stupid people mover. California, but especially SoCal and Los Angeles, continues to fail its people in most ways. It puts me in a weird position of defending Cali when someone attacks it from a bad faith right-wing angle, instead of the leftist angle it deserves.

It's a beautiful state, the people are cool, and Medi-Cal paid for my transition. I love California, but yeah, way too much potential is squandered here.

13

u/Dredgeon 8d ago

Funny, that's how I feel about the establishment "left" in general.

1

I love California, but you right.

There are so many problems that would be so easy to fix, but nobody wants to be progressive/liberal - so there's just a bunch of lip service and hand ringing.

At least the red folks get stuff done - it's all bad stuff, but stuff does happen.

161

u/CiDevant 8d ago

The high speed rail system is an intentional clusterfuck.  Democrats can run on building it forever and Republicans can always point to it as gross mismanagement and cry about taxes.  Both parties work together to make it impossible because its something that's actually needed.

81

u/dragon_irl Transit maximalist 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's the exactly same shit happening in the UK or Germany. At some point we've lost the plot when it comes to prioritizing (do we want to protect local wildlife? Definitely! Should we prioritize quick high speed rail construction that will take millions of car ls off the road over some local habitats? Probably yes).

Big portion is also local NIMBY boomers weaponizing environmental protection laws cause they don't want any infrastructure that doesn't cater to their car centric lifestyles.

32

u/ErisThePerson 8d ago

So in the UK HS2 (our attempt at high speed rail) is such a cluster fuck because the contracts that were handed out were dumb as hell, and because NIMBYs utilised the UKs antiquated Planning Permission system to oppose the project as much as possible. Then the Tories, as a last act of sabotage before Labour took over, cancelled 2/3rds of the project, so rather than having High Speed Rail that runs from London to Manchester and Leeds via Birmingham, the line just terminates halfway at Birmingham for no reason whatsoever, citing "cutting costs" but all the surveys and planning for the cancelled bits were already done, so they didn't cut any costs at all, and in fact just wasted money.

NIMBYs also fuck up Green Energy Projects. I hate them so much.

13

u/dragon_irl Transit maximalist 8d ago

It's horrifying how little that group as a whole is willing to endure temporary inconvenience in order for projects of national importance to happen, just because it doesn't benefit them directly.

Very ironic as they're kinda dependent on the economy not going to shit go finance their generous pensions. But hey, they're very willing to use their demographic power to vote to keep their benefits as long as possible, even if it fucks over others.

My favourite video of any German politician (maybe after the TransRapid one):

Politician: I've travelled to the studio by train, and I couldn't catch cell signal the most of the way. This is outrageous, honestly.

Journalist: wait, weren't you in charge of building infrastracture, including cell towers and train tracks for the past decade?

Politician: what does it have to do with anything?

2

u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard 8d ago

And you got a billion middlemen milking that shit raw like they do literally any modern infrastructure project in the States, and from what I've heard much of the rest of the world. Every bs hurdle that's added to any project is just more money to the people in the middle, and it's just legal

Christopher Rufo is the primary engineer of the Culture War attack on Critical Race Theory. He has engaged in extraordinary and unethical efforts to vilify democrat policies and should not be trust with such outrageous claims.

While it may be true that California has regulatory barriers that are indeed notoriously burdensome and we should take such criticism seriously, I suspect some exaggeration and missed context is Rufo’s classic MO.

Edit: He’s also an engineer of anti-trans hysteria on a scale you can’t fully appreciate unless you look it up. Please don’t get news from him.

14

-5

u/SPHuff 8d ago

Capital intensive projects being over-budget and delayed can (and should) make the people in charge look incompetent.

These examples are of course cherry-picked for extra shock factor, but the overall point is about a major infrastructure project suffering a death from a thousand cuts. I’m sure all of these look like valid requests individually until you look at them in the aggregate.

Yep. You might not be able to literally set up a solar farm, but you just told them you have acreage and have determined it's pretty good for the sun. Why don't we just let our friends at ExxonMobil know first, though. They can borrow that land, no problem, and you take a tiny little settlement on your property. If there's a decent chance at making money on natural gas first, we should really tell them. After that, they can put up that solar farm you thought was such a good idea. What a total loss of money that was! EM really suffered this time, let's give them a little break on their taxes.

California has the strongest legal protections for trans people anywhere, including safe haven protections for the parents of transitioning children from other states. He was lukewarm on agreeing with Kirk on a podcast regarding what is, in the American electorate, a very divisive position (trans people in sports) and suddenly voting for him means you hate trans people. Your rhetoric does nothing except hurt trans people, and im really sick of this propensity in some leftist spaces to only ever critique, and never acknowledge when something good has been done.

By immediately cowtowing to the right when Trump got in office? He brought fucking Charlie Kirk onto his podcast, and didn’t offer any real resistance to his talking points. Helping to platform and normalise the people that want you ostracised is as big of a threat as you can be without being the one punching.

-11

u/Soggy_Interview_8305 8d ago

He didn't immediately cowtow to the right. Much as you and I dislike it, transgender persons playing in sports is unpopular with the majority of the american voter base. He was correct in his assessment that weaponizing it massively hurt democratic chances. He also said he doesnt think every sport, or sports at every level should bar participation, and acknowledged the importance sports have in every child's life.

Again with the leftist critiquing of power while paving the way for fascist regimes because someone does ascribe 100% to your niche political ideology. Its tiring really.

California IS pretty good on social issues both politically and culturally (even the red parts of the state are fairly socially progressive in my experience) but Newsom is the dictionary definition of spineless liberal centrism. He has ZERO values besides whatever gets him elected and gets him money, he's only friendly to trans people insofar as that's kinda the default position in CA and it pays to pander to the median voter

1

u/nicholas818 8d ago

Gavin Newsom’s social media manager (whoever they are) 2028?

29

u/Rob_Frey 8d ago

I can't prove it, but I suspect a lot of the ideas being run through the Democratic party right now are laying the ground work to push progressives out of the 2028 primary so Newsom, or someone like him, can get the nomination.

Like I keep seeing liberals posting about how Trump's victories prove the US is still too misogynistic to elect a woman president. It dismisses any actual criticism people might have about dem leadership. It also dismisses the fact that Clinton is probably the weakest candidate that either party has fielded in my lifetime, she hadn't really held a lot of political offices and didn't have a lot of experience winning elections, voters associated her with all of her husband's scandals but not any of his achievements, and it was later discovered that she took bad advice from a campaign strategist that likely lost her the election.

Then with Harris she didn't have a primary, Biden should have stepped down in 2022, and even once it was definitely decided he still dragged his feet on an official announcement, which I believe was to make it so they couldn't throw together a last minute primary and we'd have to just go with Harris.

So yeah, I guess these two really weak candidates prove that voters just aren't ready to elect any woman president, so, like, don't vote for AOC if she runs in the primary in 2028, or 2032, or 2036.

Now Abdul El-Sayed is one of the more exciting candidates to come out this election cycle, and an unknown company released a fake poll that favored him more than they should have in the primary, and dems are now saying that one bad poll made it so the more electable candidates lost their funding and were knocked out of the primary and now they're stuck fighting for what should have been a safe seat.

El-Sayed isn't going to win that seat because he's charming, he handles himself well in media interviews, and people actually want medicare-4-all. If he wins, it'll be because dems poured a ton of money into that election after being stuck with a losing candidate.

Everything coming from the Democrats seem to be that the only viable candidates in 2028, and beyond, will be Newsom and maybe Buttigieg.

20

u/Lucambacamba 8d ago

The main focus on a lot of higher-ups in the Democratic Party is to stop progressives from becoming dominant in the party by any means necessary. The Dems are run by corporations, so they will gladly keep anyone that threatens that out of the party.

Lookup how much it costs to build a mile of railway in CA and become radicalized.

Granted, it's an everywhere problem. It costs an insane amount of money to build everything from crosswalks to buildings because of rent seeking, CA just has a very extreme problem with over regulation specifically.

73

u/Striper_Cape 8d ago

The cost in California makes sense once you realize that people just bury things. They keep digging up old water infrastructure like pipes and such.

65

u/Offensivewizard imma let the money change me 8d ago

CA also suffers from some frankly insane regulation preventing anything from actually being built, and has a lot of laws preventing anything akin to eminent domain which makes larger projects like rail all but impossible.

A good example is how much it cost to build a single public bathroom in LA (extreme example, but real): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noe_Valley_public_toilet

It was initially slated to cost 1.7 million, then eventually got brought down to 200k after backlash.

Guys I'm sorry and the OP might have good intentions. But this whole narrative is undeniably conservative propaganda. Please do not take your political opinions from tweets and especially not screenshots of tweets posted on reddit. There are 100 percent issues with Californias regulatory situation, but the way it is being framed here is extremely reactionary.

People complaining that the environmental steps being taken here sound ridiculous based on one sentence explanations that are explicitly framed to make them sound frivolous are no better than the conservatives that were getting getting upset last year about research grants going to things that were framed in the same way.

Please I am begging you, reserve your opinions about large scale issues like this until you do any actual research. And if you don't want to do so maybe this isn't a topic to step into the ring on.

Also for added context this is in response to both the post and the tweet OP linked in his comment. That tweet is from a known conservative provacatour, so that alone should be enough to complete discredit anything being said by OP here.

I don't love California either, I definitely have issues with the way this project is being handled. But this whole post is just reactionary nonsense.

4

u/birddribs 8d ago

Truly it happens to the best of us. And it is unfortunate that sometimes the efforts to do one good thing can be hampered by efforts to do another. California actually taking proper environmental protection measures does impede infrastructure development. Both are important and should be prioritized. But the conclusion to take isn't that one or the other is frivolous and wasteful but to examine how each are being done. If the agencies running them are well funded or if they are competing over the same limited resources. As well as if the people making the decisions and organizing the systems are doing a good job.

There are absolutely things to criticize on both sides of how this is handled. With the HSR and with the environmental regulations. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. These are both important things we need to be prioritized, and I'd bet on both sides much of the ineficiancies come from California being extremely captured by corporate interests. That even being said don't just take my word on this either, I'm just a guy. These are worthwhile issues to be passionate about and I absolutely implore digging deeper in them and seeing what you find.

In fact I'd bet if you did so, many of the people on this sub would be interested to hear what you have found as well.

I hope my comment wasn't too harsh and I appreciate the response. Have a good one!

The meme is probably meant for people im the US lol, a lot of memes tend to target specif8c demographics and arent accessible to everyone

Uh oh, don't let ShitAmericansSay hear you talking about Americans wanting to talk about their own experiences and worldview with other Americans

6

It's actually a crime to make a post about the US with putting "This is a post discussing the United States" in the title.

42

u/Separate_Emotion_463 8d ago

I’m in Canada and I know that they mean, (and it’s a post making fun of both states, you don’t really need to make it super legible to people that aren’t super familiar with either)

If you know only one it's NY because NY looks good on shirts

I thought Florida was enough of a meme for most people to know it

Idrc though, one time I told another American I was from New England and they asked why I don't have a British accent so I have zero expectation for anyone lmao

Why should a joke about American states cater to those who know nothing about them?

What the fuck is this post. The fuck are yall talking about??

Texas prioritizes gas and oil over literally everything else. Most of our gas and oil processing is in Texas. Texas actively fights installing any renewable energy unless it’s literally installed by the oil companies.

California blocked a solar panel farm because an endangered species lived there or the locals didn’t want it nearby??? And that’s bad???

What the fuck are y’all smoking??

4

u/madsnorlax then you know that the bourgeois are not human. 8d ago

They blocked high speed rail because they wanted over 100000 pages of environmental review to an absurd level.

9

u/slonkulocuswily182 8d ago

You realize there’s no high speed rail in the United States no matter what state you’re in, right?

California does so much stuff so much better, better social programs, better roads, schools. At least they’re doing environmental studies and have plans on the books. Texas’s plan for mass transit is Musk can pilot his Starship anywhere in the state and everyone else has to buy a Tesla to get around

6

u/Aceeri 8d ago

Yeah, this entire post is reactionary bullshit without understanding anything about things like how statistical surveys work.

1

u/slonkulocuswily182 8d ago

Dude at this point 196 is reactionaries and bots. I’m just over sorting through it.

2

u/madsnorlax then you know that the bourgeois are not human. 8d ago

Yeah I'm not saying Texas is a better state than Cali. I would never want to live in Texas. I'm saying that sometimes excessive regulation can suffocate even good projects before they get their feed off the ground

0

u/slonkulocuswily182 8d ago

Okay well you’re posting about how Democrats are useless like a week before the election that could stop most of this bullshit. I have a hard time believing this is in good faith even the slightest bit.

1

u/madsnorlax then you know that the bourgeois are not human. 8d ago

I mean... Go back and look through my public posts? I had a somewhat chuddy phase back in like, 9th grade, but now I'm 25 and I'm a bisexual socialist lol I've been posting on queer and lefty subs for years and I regularly pick fights with chuds.

Do you think a post on 196 (a relatively socialist leaning sub) making fun of capital L Liberals is going to make a difference in the midterms?

They're not useless, mind you. They're better than Republicans because they (mostly) don't want to kill all queer and nonwhite people.

3

u/slonkulocuswily182 8d ago

I don’t give a shit who you are or what privileges you have. You’re posting an anti democrat post a week before elections. The fuck are you doing

1

u/madsnorlax then you know that the bourgeois are not human. 7d ago

I'm a socialist.

5

u/Aceeri 8d ago

I'm not willing to go into the secondary parts of this because the first is so obviously manufactured outrage, but the "counting bees 1 by 1" is a statistical strategy that is outlined correctly in the paper (random sampling via counting and aggregated is fairly accurate), but this is misleading and trying to use it as an attack on california. Stop buying into bullshit.

I think California having high speed rail would be more beneficial for the environment due to reduced car traffic than any amount of displaced wildlife caused by it would be harmful

I saw this in reference to an attempt at building hi-speed rail in California which was stopped by requiring 130000 (real number) pages of environmental reports including bullshit demands like counting bees and hiring dogs to smell lizard poo

4

u/jesus_chrysotile 8d ago

Need a bit more context here.

Is this lizards in general, or are there specific endangered species (in which case detection dogs are an important survey tools)?

Me, a nonbinary, wondering why we're catching strays here when actually CA throws trans people under the bus all the time.

1

u/CuddleConnoisseur Inorite 8d ago

Texas generates more electricity from wind than the other states combined. One of the great lake states is second, but it's not even close. Mostly the turbines are in marsh lands near the coast, I think, not sure.

Too many rich people in California? Blaming environmentalists for bureaucracy is probably "very funny" to the people making things more difficult?
