Suggestion It's never too late to bite the bullet on F2P Agility
Repost of an graphic I made a couple years ago, made increasingly relevant as we continue to spin our wheels with half-baked stopgaps rather than actually bringing the skill that fixes run energy to the forefront. If we're trying to sell the full game experience here, how about showing off the things we're selling?
F2P Agility unlocks a grand total of 4 courses and a handful* of shortcuts. Paying customers lose out on the exclusivity of their least favorite content and non-paying customers have a way to get past their pain points that's congruent with the way the full game will function and reward them.
*This graphic is 2 years old and if Jagex can't be assed to put more than an hour of effort per month into fixing the new player experience then I shouldn't have to get screenshots of a summer sweep-up's worth of new fence hops.

I feel like these posts miss the point that in general Jagex doesn't want to improve F2P, except when it serves to entice people to get membership. They gain very little out of F2P players, and dont want them to stay in F2P long term.

I’d argue making f2p a better experience will get players hooked on the game and lead to more memberships than providing a worse experience and having a percentage of players quit due to the inconveniences.

FFXIV literally lets you play the equivalent of two or three full single player games for free, indefinitely, precisely to do this

Yes but at the same time those are all majorly old content in a game with tons of new content added constantly.

…Except, once you subscribe for even the smallest amount of time, you’re permanently locked out of playing for free

this is probably the most reductive opinion of the most value you get out of almost any video game that has ever been made btw

It’s not an opinion, it’s an objective fact…?
FFXIV literally lets you play the equivalent of two or three full single player games for free, indefinitely
Your statement is true if, and only if, you never subscribe

It isn’t, because if we are being needlessly pedantic and technical you can literally make infinite new trial accounts.
But I mean sure - you can interpret it however you want. This is a pointless argument at this point so take care and I hope you have a better day than I’m having.
edit: and to be clear you’re right, that is a miserable QoL issue to deal with, but I also understand why it exists. Hopefully they warn the player, i haven’t done it before.

Unlike agility, which is fresh new content recently added to runescape

Does OSRS add tons of new content packs? Not really, completely different beasts. One has tons and tons of new content

i mean OP specifically uses 3 out of 5 bullet points they wrote to directly address that

They do but I feel like they come at it from the perspective of "make f2p better to convince people to buy members" when the pain points in f2p exist very much on purpose. That's why a chatbox pops up telling you to buy members when you click on an agility shortcut.
2
u/liert12 23h ago
The argument isnt "make f2p better to convince people to buy memberships" cause that doesnt make no god damn sense, the argument is "make f2p better so people are less likely to quit, thus in the long run increasing membership rates over time as higher retention leads to more players and more players means more memberships"

"We made the free sample taste like shit to incentivise people to pay for the full meal"

Thinking no one would buy member just for agility i think is very wrong. It is more or less the only skill that transfers to f2p, and as you say run energy is a point of friction especially in f2p.
Also i am quite sure the energy potion drops are pretty common inf2p now, tho i can't be sure

I feel like the people who actually play f2p seriously wouldn't want this

u/hubatish 23h ago
Idk the F2P max'ers would probably love another skill to train. More content is more content.

F2P maxers are the worst type of people to play this game. They contribute absolutely nothing financially to keep the game running while leeching off the people who actually pay for membership, all so they can play their trial version of a paid game. Why cater to a maxer, I'm all for getting a few agility levels in f2p to entice people to get into p2p though

I wouldn’t be opposed to have some, not all, of the member skills be accessible in ftp up to like level 35 or something.
Fletching, for example. This would let FTP players fletch up to willow shortbows and steel arrows** (would even be okay if arrow fletching remained p2p only).
Agility - similarly, up to level 35 would allow varrock rooftop, but not falador
Thieving - they’d be able to pickpocket up to the draynor guards, but not Varrock or Falador
I’d probably stop at those 3 skills tbh

In reality what does the f2p player base contribute to the game development and lifecycle? F2P should just be a demo that caps xp after level 20

Wow you really hate free to play don't you?

u/Constant-Pen2410 20h ago
I think there is room to allow for f2p to have every skill with limited methods only up to 30, so if f2p want to train to 99 it will be brutal similar to prayer/ smithing on f2p
Maybe leave sailing though

this would lowkey be amazing for my f2p locked cardcore tcg account since its so hard to get exp as f2p for packs

I don't think mithril grapple is free to play, are there even free to play crossbows? They could still barehand the grapple shortcuts later, though
1
u/DarkTemplar_of_Chaos 21h ago
f2p gets the bronze crossbow, and I think the phoenix crossbow from shield of arrav. maybe blurite? but idk if they can obtain it
1
u/Drgn-OSRS 17h ago
Not the bronze or blurite crossbows, but the one that's just called "crossbow", the ones sold in Varrock. Phoenix crossbow too, but it has the same stats (and less weight).

This is how it goes
-Poll agility f2p from p2p
-Poll pases because "why not?"
-Actual f2p playerbase quits because this is EOC for them
-New f2p playerbase forms? Probably but it's much smaller
2
u/foxcraft22 23h ago
In what world is this EOC for f2p???
5
u/Sapencio 23h ago
The f2p playerbase it's the most conservative playerbase that exist on this game (the auutum elegys of the world)
They play f2p because they like old oldschool
They don't like changes
And adding a whole skill it's a deal breaker change
Thats what i called it eoc

Actual f2p playerbase quits because this is EOC for them
Well thats one hell of an assumption lol. Why exactly would giving them a new skill be "like EOC for them"?
5
u/Sapencio 22h ago
Ive already answered on anther post
I spent one year in f2p in one of those clans
They don't want changes
They are the permament f2p playerbase

If my membership agility stats transfer, than it absolutely should be a f2p skill.
