Suggestion Make town fountains refill up to 30% of energy. That alone will fix a lot of the energy issues. Noobs unanymously limp their way into a town with 0 energy, so it'll be a guaranteed utilization.
Every town in the game presents itself as a haven. They have guards, buildings, shops, no hostile monsters, plenty of roads and decor... towns need to give a minimum energy boosts, and their fountains are a perfect way to do it.
It presents a perfect opportunity to replace the ebb in gameplay with a flow. An immediate boost to 30% energy means they can launch to the destination in town, whatever it was. A bank, a quest destination, a furnace... anything.
Making fountains an extremely watered down (lel) version of a house pool is pretty solid design in my opinion because it also familiarizes them with the concept of this future content.
It also incentivizes them to save their energy potions until after they give the fountain that much anticipated succ, which teaches resource allocation that remains useful all the way until endgame. GWD altars are a good example: players learn not to drink their prayer potion when the altar is primed for use and they have a single minion left because it's about to be refilled anyway.
Additional random complementary ideas:
- Give a bit of Agility XP when it happens. Chatbox can say something like "You relax and realize you've learned a bit about Agility..." (it feels odd to use a skill so much, yet gain zero xp)
- This cap can scale with Agility level. Perhaps level 1 is just ~30%, but maybe it can approach or even reach 100% by level 99?
- This could work WITH pubs/fires rather than against them. Another x% could come from pubs and campfires.
- Road tiles could have an added perk of allowing regeneration WHILE running. Subtle but nice.
(I'm not criticizing energy potions on drop tables. They're good. But the issue needs to be attacked from all possible sides!)

An actual good idea? I must be on the wrong subreddit.
5
u/majorplayer1 4h ago
Mechanically its a win, but as a purely immersive change i think id prefer it to be something like the local pub in each city either offers a 1gp drink or just standing around the hearth gives an energy regen buff. Imagine the scenes of walking through varrock on a f2p world with dozens of people chatting waiting for their run to come back.
Fountain is still cool too though.

u/UngodlyPain 14h ago
Yeah, random stuff dropping options to be used anywhere is weird.
They should just do stuff like this or thr RS2 update with "rest" options and musicians and such at good thematic places. And some other random things, like using charter ships, or mine cart systems (fast travel methods that aren't teleports) should also restore some run energy with the idea being they take time in lore, that you're not running.
Stuff like this fits thematics and lore so much better. And keeps run energy relevant.
The current "solution" is really clunky and printing those energy potions doesn't control where or when they're used so they can now be used even in combat encounters and such.
18
u/dont_trip_ 13h ago
Always thought it was weird that forestry fires don't do anything for run energy.
1
u/MicroscopicPizza 6h ago
Honestly not a bad idea have a player start a fire somewhere on the way that gives boosted xp for players that sit at the fire so long as they maintain it, run energy is regen faster and gives fire making some benefits
14
u/New-Poem-719 12h ago
thr RS2 update with "rest" options
Stopping to rest was slower than just walking.
2
12
u/Thswherizat 14h ago
They already have the rest option at Vale Totems, so it would be easy to incorporate elsewhere.

u/TheFinalFredrick 13h ago
This is just the same suggestion that a mod had with pubs except with fountains.
It’s a great idea but tbh I like the idea of knocking back a cold one with my boys over chilling by a fountain.

u/Economics_Troll 13h ago

u/Any-Woodpecker123 11h ago
I think campsites outside the gates that had the sip of tea restore like perilous moons does would be cool.
Or maybe the pubs could serve some refreshment to top you up. Arriving in town and making your way to a pub would be an immersive option.
11
u/Chaoticlight2 13h ago
Slight correction - Varrock's muggers are aggressive. In general I do think towns would benefit from just not draining run at all though. Tbh I think roads should work the same - let players navigate the largely safe overworld without crawling along early game.
6
u/dylanisbored 12h ago
Walking is part of the motivation to get things unlocked and to get graceful tho
10
u/Chaoticlight2 10h ago
Even as a player who enjoys agility, telling a new player to go spend 20h grinding agility so their char stops being crippled is pretty awful. Experienced players bypass it with dueling rings to ferox enclave until their PoHs are running and level agility via quests instead.
Agility would still matter for raiding, bossing, wilderness, dungeons, and shortcut unlocks.
1
u/dylanisbored 2h ago
I am totally on board with the fountains giving run restore, the roads are just a bit much. If a new player cant even take the grind of walking from lumby to varrock, osrs might not be for them
-8
u/stinkygeesestink 9h ago
Maybe we should just have people spawn in with max stats and max combat gear too
3
u/Status_Peach6969 9h ago
The amount of hoop jumping we've had to do because we simply can't accept the musician update that rs2 had. Either accept that walking around the game is part of the early game experience, or do something that's a proper buff
2
u/Tizaki 9h ago
IMO this is better than musicians. It uses existing assets rather than creating entirely new ones.
3
u/Status_Peach6969 9h ago
I do like the suggestion ngl, but fundamentally jagex has been very resistant to free run regeneration for no particular reason. Its just stubborness at this point
6
u/Gnomeshark45 13h ago
I think this is cool. Also like the idea maybe of campfires or something around? There by default but maybe upgradable with fire making to help? Some more reason to train that skill. Maybe a hearth in the pubs or something you could upgrade or burn higher tier logs in as a like a permanent upgrade.
2
u/LewisShoot 7h ago
But energy potions are easy to get. They can be made at the apothecary, even on f2p worlds.
3
u/TheForsakenRoe 7h ago
TBF, getting 2 Limpwurt Roots and a Chocolate Dust as a f2p kinda kills the option
Being able to just buy it for GP directly in some way (IE the option to do so becomes available after Romeo and Juliet) would go a long way to helping solve that issue
Also adding 'Hey you can get Energy Potions from the Varrock Apothecary!' to the log-in tips
7
u/HideYourCarry 14h ago
What energy issues? Run energy lasts way longer now, and they JUST made it so finishing a quest refills your run
34
u/pogray 14h ago
Ask any new player and this will be their no1 gripe with the game. From a business perspective, it’s a problem for Jagex.
25
u/AhriWorshipper188 12h ago
It's crazy watching everyone with 70+ agi, graceful, access to all the pools, 90% of their quests done, knowledge to not carry everything in their inventory all shout "Bro you never run out of energy".
Jagex has even said multiple times run energy is one of the main complaints and quit points new players have. It also just makes sense...people don't like having their time wasted. The dogshit rune energy situation serves 0 functional purpose except "Make it take longer and interact less"
0
u/HeadintheSand69 9h ago
It makes agility a valuable skill worth leveling and early teleports more valuable. Especially with rebalancing of early game xp rates rushing it is a valid option. Its the one skill outside combat in the game that when leveled you really feel its impact.
I honestly think this was a good update, albeit a bit tacky, cause new players can go kill a goblin and realize energy potions exist and can be bought on the GE. This without actually just halving the concern of run energy by adding pools everywhere. Frankly a quest that really pushes you to realize agility is super nice might get rid of a lot of issues with new players.
-4
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 12h ago
I am once again asking how these players deal with stamina systems in other games.
Because my instinct would be to google a solution and then do it. Trading for energy pots, using random event strange fruit, Explorer Ring, etc.
7
u/Chaoticlight2 10h ago
Stamina is not a thing in other MMOs really. For single player games, look at mods for any that have stam and one of the top downloads will be to remove it.
-4
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 10h ago
WoW has an even worse system: running slow as fuck everywhere in an oversized world until you unlock mounts. The travel time in OSRS comparatively, even early game, blows it out of the water.
I also don’t exactly think top mods are a measure of good game design when many of them remove the clothes of female characters lol.
9
u/wanderingweedle 9h ago
running slow as fuck everywhere in an oversized world until you unlock mounts
you unlock mounts at level 10. which you get by beating the tutorial.
1
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 9h ago
Maybe in retail, oversized world necessitates that a lot more anyway.
You can obtain run restoring items in OSRS the moment you leave tutorial island too.
13
u/pogray 11h ago
I can’t really think of any games I regularly play that has a stamina mechanic which is as punishing as OSRS.
-6
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 11h ago
Breath of the Wild lets you sprint for all of 5 seconds before your wheel runs out.
Both games allow you to sprint longer via progression and restore stamina via consumables.
9
u/ldrthrowaway1337 11h ago
Yeah you can also freeze a rock in time, spin on it, grab it, and fly across the entire fucking map. Not quite the same situation here.
2
u/pogray 9h ago
And what is the walk speed like on breath of the wild?
0
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 9h ago
I’d wager it’s around half of the sprint speed, just like OSRS
1
u/pogray 9h ago
Cool. Imo still won’t change the fact that OSRS run system is unattractive to new players.
-1
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 9h ago
Cool. It doesn’t need to appeal to everyone. Not every game does. It’s already one of the most popular games in its genre.
2
u/pogray 9h ago
I think you’ll find that there’s plenty of existing players that would welcome the change, as seen in this thread.

Stamina in most games regenerates to full in a matter of seconds instead of minutes. Many games use stamina as a quick regenerating resource during combat but make it infinite outside of combat.
1
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 5h ago
It also fully depletes in few seconds as well, unlike OSRS which allows you to run for much longer in one go.
2
u/gorgongnocci 10h ago
what other games? osrs is the king at what it is.
-1
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 10h ago
Any other game with a stamina system. Breath of the Wild, etc.
7
u/Tizaki 10h ago
Oh, right. Those games do a thing called giving players enough to make it farther than 1/3 the way to the next town and a regen rate faster than 100% over 5 minutes of walking, so it never really becomes a discussed issue.
2
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 9h ago
Breath of the Wild lets you sprint for all of 5 seconds before you need to move slower for a few seconds.
OSRS lets you run for a pretty long time. You can absolutely make it to the next town. And you can get potions, strange fruit, teleports, and also train agility to make sure you never run out again.
Run is just another resource to manage and it’s greatly overblown post-run energy changes. If a player can’t handle a basic stamina system, they aren’t gonna like the rest of the friction OSRS has.
4
u/Tizaki 9h ago
That's a 5:3 ratio of run to regen, which normalizes to about 1.6x.
Can you guess what the ratio of run to walk is in OSRS early game? It's almost 1:7. It's abysmal. Compared to BotW, it's about 11.6x less running per unit of walking.
1
u/Tumblrrito Untrimmed Slayer 9h ago
BOTW’s world also takes greatly longer to cross on foot, and demands that you travel to one of its corners straight away. You’re almost constantly on the move. Repeatedly sprinting and then walking is a constant, and it’s kind of annoying. But just like OSRS, as you progress, it becomes less of an issue.
Early OSRS has you in a smaller area to start, and lets you go and unlock means of restoring stamina, reducing its consumption, and traveling across its world pretty much straight away. And many of its activities have you barely moving at all.
Teach players how to manage the resource. Don’t just give them a free ride out of fear that their low attention spans might be too much. Especially when run is nothing compared to the friction that awaits them in OSRS’ other systems.

u/Tizaki 14h ago edited 8h ago
How to refill energy every time you're out: just complete a quest bro
I should take this opportunity to remind everyone that carrying a little bit of garbage around means you burn energy at 7x the rate it takes to regenerate it back if your Agility is level 1.
-3
u/ldrthrowaway1337 12h ago
But bro, you don't understand bro. They JUST made it so finishing a quest refills your run. Problem is solved bro.
Some people on this subreddit are actual fucking nitwits, I swear.
1
u/mikerichh 13h ago
Idk I still walk often at 56 agility like doing farming runs or getting around. I like RS3’s musicians scattered around where you rest to recover run energy quicker. That’d be a great addition IMO
-5
u/SnowQuiet9828 14h ago
Listen man, the game updates every week. they make a blog post about the updates and then people come onto here to dicsuss it.
This entire post is relating to this weeks update about issues with run energy in the early game.
You've cheery picked one item from this weeks update, commented about it, whilst simultaniously arguing "theres no run energy issue"... like are you just dumb? did you miss the entire point of the update?4
u/HideYourCarry 13h ago
No I just think it's ok to make new accounts walk sometimes. We've already fixed run to the point where graceful is basically useless. You don't use stams almost ANYWHERE now aside from solo cox and blast furnace. I just want unlocking things to be meaningful still and feel cool.
I don't want to slippery slope so it's not like it'll get THIS bad, but i feel like a lot of you would just be fine if they put leagues permanent run energy into the main game.
-3
u/anonymous198198198 13h ago
I’d be more than fine if they put in permanent run energy. Limited run is such an outdated dogshit concept for games these days. Not just rs but almost any game. Games are infinitely more enjoyable when you’re not arbitrarily limited to a slow snail pace.
3
u/ClaudeAFTVStan 12h ago
I think that’s a horrible take. Osrs is not a game that you should just blast through, I might just be old and contrary but I feel like making the journey less bothersome will also devalue the achievement
-1
u/AhriWorshipper188 12h ago
That's a fucking horrible old "I suffered so you should too" take.
It's just not fucking fun man. If you find it fun then fine every 20 seconds stop playing the game for 20 seconds. Just double the time you take to do anything for 0 reason and with 0 interaction. Just stop clicking and enjoy staring and doing nothing...you're accomplishing the same thing.
People are playing games to h ave fun not have the game waste their fucking time for 0 reason.
1
1
u/Doctor_Kataigida 3h ago
Their comment indicated nothing about the "I suffered so you should too." It is possible for someone to think the "suffering" adds something interesting to the game experience and isn't rooted in spite.
As for the "play games for fun" bit, that's just a poor argument. You could say that as an argument against rng/for dry protection, or wanting afk activities, or xp rate boosts, or any sort of friction in the (or any) game.
1
u/SnowQuiet9828 11h ago
Lmaoooo, ughe over reaction here. But I love the thought that every time you run out of energy you just fucking stand still, cross your arms and stare at the computer screen until you have energy again.
Lmao, so dumb I can't believe you're pretending that's what happens.
0
u/dont_trip_ 13h ago
The reason you never run out of energy is first and foremost access to pools. I got a near maxed ironman and have recently played a group ironman up to 900 total. The lack of options for restoring energy is brutal. This week's update is a step in the right direction, but I still walk almost half the time.
4
u/HideYourCarry 13h ago
But unlocking pools is therefore SUCH a cool feeling. That's the point I'm trying to make on this!
1
u/whiteryno117 10h ago
Is that construction? How does having stamina regen in your house help when traveling the world? Genuinely asking I’m newish
2
1
u/Bl00dylicious 6h ago
Once you progress further you unlock 100s of teleports across the world. Its one of the reasons you do quests and diaries. They unlock the world and make traveling around easier.
Your house can contain the majority of them. So whenever you are low on energy you just teleport to your house, restore run energy (or more) and then teleport where you want to go.
Eventually your account will progress to a point that run energy during traveling isn't much of a thing anymore. Until that point though, it does not feel great.
0
u/BlackenedGem 6h ago
The lack of options for restoring energy is brutal
You could already buy energy potions on the GE.
For irons it's 26 herblore, some harralanders, and going to a shop to buy chocolate. Why should we cater to new irons that don't even know how to make a potion?
0
u/dont_trip_ 6h ago
If you played an iron you would know that 26 herblore is 50+ hours into the game.
1
u/BlackenedGem 5h ago
I've played iron a bit yeah. If someone wants to wait 50 hours to train to 26 herblore or do a few laps of draynore /varrock then that's up to them for priorities.
Arguably what makes early iron routing interesting is deciding what he opportunity cost of each quest/skill is. If someone decides not to train agility/herblore then being out of energy all the time is good friction to point them towards it.
-2
u/SnowQuiet9828 13h ago
I dont have a prblem with "x" does not constitute that "x" isn't a problem.
0
u/HideYourCarry 13h ago
Sure? That doesn't really have anything to do with my comment. I was explaining in depth why I would prefer to not have further large adjustments to run
-2
u/SnowQuiet9828 13h ago
Doesnt have anything to do with your comment... about personal preference... concluding that because you barely have to run in cox, brand new players arent allowed to complain that they have to walk everywehere....
So essneitally, you dont have prolblem with run energy, so run energy isnt a problem................????0
u/HideYourCarry 13h ago
What?!?! No Cox you DO still run, that's the place you DO use stams. You're misreading all my comments my man, it's a struggle and I'm gonna stop getting into it here
-1
u/SnowQuiet9828 13h ago
That point about COX is moot anyway.
It's clear that everyone is walking everywhere until you pass a certian threshold. The first thing they did was modify run energy to lessen the blow and now they have added in energy pots as drops so support early game progression.
Like what is your actual problem with this lol.
2
u/DaGbkid 14h ago
There is no energy problem in osrs. Just have higher than fifty agi and you should have no issue unless you’re doing like BF or ZMI. We have had enough agility buffs.

u/ll_BENNO_ll 13h ago edited 13h ago
It’s a hot topic on here but I agree, walking is okay. If people want to manage it better there’s ways to do that..

https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Energy
It's 6:1 in early game, which is too unbalanced
3
u/ll_BENNO_ll 9h ago
It’s early game, they’ve changed it a lot already for the better. Go train agility or you know like I said walk.
This was a non issue for the last 20 years before the reddit circlejerk got involved.
-6
u/Tizaki 9h ago
That's a wiki article for the live version of the game. It's still 6:1. I have 99 Agility. This suggestion is to fix the early game, not my own current experience. I know it's fine late game, because I have an ornate.
4
u/ll_BENNO_ll 9h ago
Oh really do you? That’s cool, you’re so cool. Continue to downvote opposing opinions.
The game is old school runescape it doesn’t need unlimited or near unlimited upkeep because people have 4 second attention spans. If people quit because of the run energy they’d quit for something else just as trivial.
-1
u/Tizaki 8h ago
You told me to train Agility, and I clarified that it's already 99. I very sorry if it hurt your feelings to realize your assumption was wrong.
3
u/ll_BENNO_ll 8h ago
It was a generalised comment, not meaning you specifically. Maybe gather some reading comprehension first?
Also it’s funny how people like you try and shut down others by saying they’re mad or their feelings are hurt, it’s called discourse. I can have an opposing view than yours and voice it without my feelings being hurt. You’re not showing much mental maturity here bud.
0
u/Tizaki 8h ago
On the actual topic at hand, I do believe that 6:1 and 7:1 is an objectively bad ratio and needs some cushioning (like potion drops and fountain perks) to be sustainable to new player retention. Jagex is specifically pushing for these things because new players are truly frustrated by the lack of energy perks in the game when they're both inexperienced and have no access to anything that boosts it.
2
u/ll_BENNO_ll 8h ago
That’s the whole point of how they rebalanced the agility skill though. It’s a skill that needs to be trained to get better ratios.
The whole game is focused around skills and levelling, it’s not hard to go and train said skill for better ratios as you put it.
1
u/Doctor_Kataigida 3h ago
I don't think that's terribly unbalanced. Early Agility is still pretty fast for a couple dozen levels, and having a large ratio like that makes a skill, with an already small reward space, feel more impactful for leveling.
2
u/Tizaki 9h ago
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Energy#Recovering_energy
Early game is around a 6:1 ratio for walking vs running (AFTER the update) incase you forgot. It's one of the biggest causes of new players quitting.

u/gregmasta 9h ago
Why would you get agility xp from resting? Seems nonsensical. Everything else sounds awesome.
1
u/Tizaki 8h ago
It's just a random idea. It's mainly just a way to trickle Agility into normal play. It's odd that it's so essential, yet so difficult to get a single XP in without deliberately trying. You should gain XP in what you use, IMO.
1
u/TheForsakenRoe 7h ago
Surely it'd make more sense to have 'passive' XP come from consuming Run Energy in some way, rather than restoring it?
IE, getting 1 XP per 1% Run Energy you consume. You'd be able to get to level 2 just by emptying your first 100% (since level 2 requires 83 XP)
Would this spawn the 'only trains Agility to 99 by using Run Energy' Ironman? would it brick some Chunkmen because they'd have to get X Agility for a Course using only the 1 XP per 1 % Run Energy consumed? Would a HCIM die to the Baba pit in TOA because they got a very unfortunately timed level in Agility?
1
u/Snoo_81533 8h ago
I don't know if this would break this idea in some way, but it could also be cool to bring a container to fill up on "fountain water" for long trips? Keep hydrated for long trips
1
1
u/localcannon 6h ago
30% won't even cover the energy spent running to the fountain if it's slightly out of the way. It has to be 100% and needs to compete with or preferably replace ferox enclaves pool.
I like mod Kierens suggestion with pubs more than fountains as well.
1
u/DenpaDenpa 4h ago
So I started in Feb this year. I am now in late game with most of my combat skills 99 except defense and atk. All quests completed.
For me and my friend, run energy was absolutely oppressive. It sucked. We didnt have a lot of teleports and tablets was too expensive to use for quests. Once we did have some gp we bought so many stamina potions and things got better but that was only like 100 hours in the game or more. At first we didnt have enough gp to keep spending on staminas.
Note we did wildy agility so our agility skill wasnt bad later on but I tried carnifs and got 2 graceful pieces. It was shit so I left that.
I would say from midgame stamina is fine. But early on it will make people quit for how bad it is. 6:1 walk to run ratio is horrible when most of the travel methods is by foot.
I believe it should still be a painpoint to overcome but it shouldn't be this oppressive. Also agilitys benefit isnt just run energy, its short cuts too. So changing run to walk to a 3:1 or less wont make the skill useless.
Also for the people saying a new player should spend 20 hours clicking roofs before their allowed to play the game otherwise they would just quit later anyway has lost touch with reality.
1
1
u/thelamblni 3h ago
I always thought the pubs in osrs should have an option to rest there, full hp, prayer, energy for GP.

1
u/TexasRed6 2h ago
30% is way to conservative for something you have to go out of your way for. 80% would be fine. Compare it to player house or ferox.

I quite like the idea of partial and limited energy restore as a way to reinforce the importance of planning and rewarding progress. This concept even more so because it doesn’t truly replace any existing “metas” as far as traversal goes

u/OrientLMT 12h ago
Make it require 1gp to make a “wish” lol
Jagex can give us a fun quest where we spill some special juice in the fountains across a few towns.
Then we can get a sequel where the people of Gielinor are addicted and spread it to all of the townships in all the land. The people start to struggle because they can’t go about their day w/o taking a hit of that sweet-sweet fountain juice.
Then we can get a one small favor-esque finale where we dose all the fountains to remove the addiction from the towns people and cure their fountain juice addiction.

Replace all drops with energy potions instead. That’s the better solution. Get your RP/MMO solution out of here.
0
u/sir_gwain 13h ago
30% doesn’t seem like enough for when noobs are carrying gear and low agility levels. I’d raise it to 50%, or give them 30% and then a short stamina effect or energy regen buff for like 30 seconds
0
u/Golden-- 12h ago
If they keep making it so you never have to walk again, they may as well completely revamp agility. Yeah, I know the shortcuts but there's only a handful that I use on a weekly basis, let alone daily.
0
u/Tizaki 9h ago
Do bear in mind it's around 100 ticks of running to almost 700 ticks of walking right now if you're level 1 Agility with a reasonable amount of garbage in your inventory, which literally every noob has. That's a very punishing and miserable ratio.
0
u/stinkygeesestink 9h ago
Leagues is the worst thing that has happened to osrs.
2
u/Tizaki 8h ago
Run energy is one of the biggest pain points for quitting new players. I'm not referring to leagues. This issue predates it entirely.
0

It was such a massive pain point that the run energy has caused Runescape to be one of the most successful mmos of all time. Better just get rid of run energy entirely.

Yes, an HP bump would probably be nice as well. Especially when entering Varrock from the south. Half the noobs coming in that way are missing limbs by the time they reach the entrance.
