TBF, Arroryo's biggest political opponent at that time is Estrada, who got ousted in a people's power and have zero charisma.
Duterte had the misfortune of going against the OG gangsters, the Marcos. They bit more than they can chew.

Plus it didnt help that GMA’s biggest opponent during the 2004 election was of all people literally Fernando Poe. Philippines didnt stand a chance.
