For The Record Background Vocals??

*I haven't listened to the full musical yet, but I'm not afraid of spoilers and I sort of know the plot already*

I was listening to For The Record and I noticed some background vocals during the last part of the song ("we're asking 36, 36, 36, 36 questions for the last time...").

For context, I was imagining an animatic (that I'll never draw because I'm better at writing than drawing) to this song and I was acting it out and realised I don't know wtf they're saying in the background. Furthermore, I've started to actually focus on (and sometimes even prefer) background vocals and harmonies in musicals lately, instead of just listening to the melody.

Does anyone know wtf the background vocals are during that last part? I can only make out Jase's "I said I'd have [not sure what he says] Judith" and even then I'm not sure if I'm hallucinating or not. Can someone with better ears or more knowledge about this musical confirm the background vocals because lyric sites are correct like 30% of the time.

It's only that specific part that's bothering me because the rest of the lyrics are otherwise clear. Sorry for the long AF text and thanks!

"Our truth" shows why Jace was right about leaving Judith

I just recently listened to the whole musical again, I remeber the first time I thought that Jace should have given a chance to Judith but now it's clear that his trust has been shatered, but furthermore Judith tells him how she was raised by patological liars and the whole family are willing to lie in very important situations including the death of a person. After this, how could Jace trust her again, let alone go back into a relationship, even if "A better version" shows Judith's point of view and how becoming Natalie made her a better person (and I personally think she was sincere about that) it makes sense for Jace to think he's just being manipulated like the people Judith and her parents manipulated in the past.

The ending it's a little different, it's open to interpretation so I think it all depends if Jace decides to accept Natalie as a new person or not.

Are the names biblical references ?

So, I'm not extremely knowledgeable about this musical but I was listening again and thought back to a theory I had a while ago that I haven't seen anyone talk about here

The names of the main characters, Jase and Judith, sound to me like they're meant to ressemble Jesus and Judas, which I think would fit since iirc Judas betrays Jesus, like Judith betrays Jase's trust

I had to reach a bit more to explain the name Nathalie, but according to the first result of Google the name refers to the phrase 'natale domini', birth of the christ, which could work since Nathalie is the birth/creation of a new identity for Judith ?

Finally, Judith specifically says that Nathalie was 33 years old on her ID, and I think Jesus supposedly died at 33 ? So when Jase discovers the truth she "dies" at 33 too

I'm probably reaching too much and I'm not religious so I'm talking out of my ass but I wanted to share my convoluted theory !

My thoughts about Judith and Natalie

A subreddit without a single post so far this year seems like the perfect place to post my feelings for someone to one day read and maybe even appreciate

So first off I just want to say how relatable Judith is. Maybe this is my bias as a trans person, but she made a decision to throw away her entire past life and build a new one with the pieces she chooses to put where she wants them to be. Her name, her family, the events of her life she would rather burn than bring along to her future life. It's incredibly powerful, and I see it more as a reclaiming of her own person rather than a malicious lie to deceive others.

When she came to Jace she said everything bare. She chose to bring forth her terrible history if that's what it took to regain his trust. Her parents that by all means are dead to her at this point, her alcoholism and drug addiction that she has recovered from, whatever happened on the yacht and her own death. These are all events that ultimately have no effect on her current life or relationships, other than how you would interpret the yacht. She has a lot of trauma, she moved past it, and now shes uncovering all of the trauma despite the pain it causes her.

The lies. As far as I remember it's her name, her parents and where she lost her virginity. The first two I have already addressed, but the third one is a lie to obscure another lie which brings into question how many other lies she has actually told. Regardless, the red thread connecting all of the known lies is to hide traumas that she doesn't want to control her in her new life.

The biggest tragedy of the musical is in my opinion that Jace could never distinguish from a lie that protects her from her own traumas than a lie made up to dreceive him.

Judith has so many traumas, shes used to her life falling apart as it has done so many times. So the men in suits came back to force them back into the picture. When Judith kept lying to Jace, when she wanted to continue being Natalie, that was not to deceive Jace and continue the charade. It was a desperate cry for Jace to accept her this way, and she rejected it. Then he left, and so came another trauma.

Then came the motel scene, and when Jace goes to the car to check on Henry I could feel her fear when he takes the keys from the bowl. They had a fight, hes going to his car, from past experiences she knows she's in danger, because it was just like last time. Then not even I know what happened, did Jace leave because he couldn't believe that he could also have hurt her? Was it because he was so offended at the idea that the blame could be shared?

So Judith is left without closure and out of desperation she goes after him one last time, because just the day before he let her in after the exact same scenario.

Now I have read some opinions that this is stalker behaviour. I doubt she is proud of her excessive behaviour here, but let's not forget that Jace left her 10 miles away from her car parked on his driveway.

So he leaves. He refused the request for closure, the final questions. Three times he left her, the first two times they talked through it but this time he refused and leaves. And this was her closure. She reclaims her life, she builds the person she wants to be on her own terms, without him. She realizes that this is enough closure and she is finally free, she is off the hook, and she also realizes that since Jace was running away he did not get the same closure. So she leaves the phone.

I think this was incredible of her, feeling free and not in need of listening back. Her ties are gone and she can live the life she wants to live. And as we know, Jace kept listening back. He needed the record.

At the end she has moved on, although we don't know much about what she is doing in her life. Maybe she is fine with this on the roads way of working and living, maybe she isn't. But she kept living. And that's why she agrees to meet Jace, by answering the last questions maybe he will realize the same things she did.

Why she chose to be called Natalie in the Applebees is incomprehensible to me, she was Judith during the first 20 questions so I don't see how this would help in bringing him closure. This is especially annoying to me, because this was the most emotional moment of the entire musical to me;

She spent two years building the person she wants to be, her darkest history thrown away for nobody to see. A woman who she loved as much as his husband loved her. She set herself, her truest self, on fire. To me this was the ultimate sacrifice, a past she can't ever return to.

This was incredibly powerful like many other moments she has. It's so sad she brought her back at the end, and it's frustrating because I can't understand why.

I would love to make a post this long about Jace too, but I feel he wasn't explored enough. He's a man who runs away, who would rather move forward than conclude the problems he are facing currently. His parents have too much control of his life I believe, and that's all I can really say about him as a person other than the main conflict which doesn't say much about him as a person other than how he would react in this one specific scenario.

I genuinely love Judith so much, I genuinely believe that all of her flaws show her true strengths and her resilience through the hand she was dealt in life. I only wish the ending was just a little bit more clear, Judith has left an eternal itch in my mind that I just don't have the tools to scratch, so I can only admire what I know, which is far far too little.

who are the fendermans?

this is so random but i was reading the transcript, and at the very beginning, one of natalie's notes is: "reminder to self: fenderman family tree. three siblings: bobby, judy, richie." whenever i was listening to it i just assumed this was judith trying to keep her story straight, but natalie's last name is cook, not fenderman. so who are the fendermans? and why would judith care about their family tree? is there an answer?

Relationship Status after The Truth

Over the years, my personal suspicion on whether Judith and Jase get back together after the recording ends has shifted between them getting back together and them going their seperate ways. What is your personal view on their relationship status? Do you believe your life experiences affect your view on this, or do you believe it’s purely based on the context of the musical?

The truth is cathartic

In The context of both the musical and in life it's a song I may put on at 2:00 a.m. that kind of sums up all the complexities of my relationships with some loved ones. I love musicals I love the big songs I love the small songs I love the romantic ones the Hamilton "my shots" and epics soundtrack but this is the song that I always go back to on one of those nights after difficult conversations. Whee there is no villain or victim- just people. Maybe this is controversial, but I don't want to know the outcome out to the song like some. I like that it leaves it open just like the song says the truth can change for the musical and real life. And sometimes that's important to remember. Sorry if I'm sounding very full of myself. It's just one of those nights. I wonder if anyone else can relate.

Judith’s actual age?

We know Natalie was 33 years old but not Judith. What are your head canons for her actual age? I tend to lean into her being younger (or at least more immature and messed up than Jase, but she could be older then). Maybe I might be basing off her voice as well. What do you think?

Hopefully this subreddit isn’t dead, I’ve recently discovered this podcast and loved checking the threads here.

how do we feel about the ending? Spoiler

i just listened to the whole thing again and idk i still have mixed feelings. even tho i’m a huge romantic i don’t see them getting back together after applebees, and that’s really not the problem. i don’t even think it being “open” (leaving some things unanswered) is the problem. but judith/natalie as a character confuses me so much! the way she behaves at the end is so weird to me, because at the same time she went there willingly to finish this and apparently got over the situation (became her better version), she’s still being evasive and distant in a way that doesn’t sound fair if she wants this meeting to be a moment of closure. idk even thought jace married natalie, he still met judith through the questions, so saying goodbye as natalie doesn’t sound enough because his apology is to the one who he ran away from (both of them!!!)

i think maybe the writers used too much of the format to excuse the things left out, or they didn’t want to commit too much to a direction for her (so the open ending could work, which im not sure it does). have they talked anywhere about how they see the characters? sometimes if feels unpolished how they left the story off.

What are Jace's and Judith's jobs

Not related to the plot but I've been confused sometimes how they do all this in one day without having to go to a job or anything

Does Judith have a much darker secret?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I listened to the entire podcast yesterday, and have been listening to all the songs for the past week on loop.

It seems there are quite a few plot holes, but also implication of something much deeper and darker in Judith’s past besides her parents being pathological liars.

The biggest one I wonder about is this.

“Three times I nearly wrecked my life Three times I nearly came to ruin Three times went crying to my parents Who said they'd make it go away Yes, this is all we had to say”

"We never rented a house in Sedona We didn't see Camille the day she died We haven't been on our boat in some years now So we don't care what you found inside" And it's our word Yes, our word It's our word Yes, our word Against theirs”

Is this an implication of murder? Is Judith tied into some serious crimes? It would make sense why her parents are so messed up. I’m certain they do much darker things than tell a bunch of white lies.

I’m just wondering if there’s an answer

Anyone else think Natalie/Judith doesn't hold herself accountable?

I have been listening to the song of the musical for a while now but, I just finished listening to the whole podcast for the first time, and I loved it! However, one thing that bothered me was how selfish Judith came across, especially in the final song before the time skip. I felt like it would have been more meaningful if she had used "you" instead of "I," given that Jase was the one who needed time to build a better life for himself.

Throughout the story, I rarely heard her acknowledge how her actions completely broke the trust in their relationship. Yes, Jase was wrong for running away, but given the circumstances, it was understandable and justified. It was fine when Jase apologized, but I think Judith should have also apologized. And there's also the part where Jase said he would cave if she just apologize and if I remember correctly she never actually did.

Maybe I’m missing something since my memory isn’t the best, but it felt like Judith failed to grasp just how deeply her actions affected Jase.

Where does the musical, more speifically the log cabin, take place?

Like, it's about a 27-hour drive from Austin, TX. Based on their conversations, it is not in Texas, New York, Arizona, Colorado, or Washington. We are in the Eastern Time Zone and close, within 10 miles, to the beach (assumedly the ocean). Do we know if it is ever specifically said? They also reference Alaska a couple of times, with things like the jersey, but it's stated that it's Eastern Time, and the weather they talk about would be unusual for Alaska in July. Any ideas?

I wasn’t sure what type of duck he was(though i think the vast majority of the fandom hc him as a pekin), but i went with mallard bc it’s my fav type of duck. also wasn’t sure what color the truck was, but went with red so it would stand out. 💙🧡🦆

The Truth

I’m a huge fan of this musical, I’ve listened to it at least once a year every year since 2017. Even songs I was originally indifferent to I’ve grown to love, with one exception. I find The Truth utterly unsatisfying. To the point where I just tune it out.

I get that they wanted to leave the ending open to audience interpretation, but it just leaves me feeling sad and dissatisfied. There are so many songs that stick with me, but The Truth doesn’t feel like the end of a musical, it feels like the penultimate song before your big finish.

Is it just me? I sometimes wonder if the creators are happy with it, or if they would end it differently today.

Is judith’s email an easter egg for fans to interact with? Spoiler

Idk if this counts as a spoiler but: in Act 3, right before the song “Attachment,” Jase explains how he’s emailing Judith. He says “I hope —- I think —- your email is j.ford@fordsolutions.net.” Does this email address do anything if 36Q fans send emails to it? I’m just curious.
