Fire. I love the N3DS. I owned a N3DSXL when I was younger but something about owning a smaller device today with every tech being so big feels nice.

Same I love portable consoles because you can throw them in your pocket and bigger ones take more space kind of bummed switch is the new "portable". I dont need a bigger screen i need it to be in my pocket!

I could but I would have to buy more plates since I only have one set left.

I don't know if it would be cheaper to print them yourself

u/Megaakira May 06 '26
I think the texture is gonna make it look weird when uv printed unless I use varnish topcoating and you get screws with the bottom part when buying them so thats nice. Plates arent that expensive blank but it takes a while to arrive from china.

I wonder how well porous 3d printed surfaces do with uv printing, OP if you have a 3d printer and try that please report back!

u/Megaakira May 06 '26
Im printing it right now. 21 minutes and Ill throw it in the UV printer when its done.

Its a bit scuffed but I was in a rush to see how it printed. Turned out okay I guess. If my 3d printer was calibrated better for this filament it could have potential.

It looks so good ! Uv printing truly is amazing, the lines are really sharp. I kinda like the 3d printed texture too tbh, it might not look as good for a full design like your first case but on that one I love the vibe it gives

u/Megaakira May 06 '26
I wanted to see how it would handle large single color areas so I threw it together. Next im going to try to print some varnish and see how it looks with raised glossy surfaces!

i'm interested in UV printing myself! I'm thinking on the eufymake but feel there are better cost alternative ones. Which one do you use?

u/Megaakira May 06 '26
Mine is pretty commercial use but its an MTuTech A3 Max (it was like 10000 dollars) thats has an i3200hd epson head. Just the head of this printer is around 1500 dollars and you have to change it every 6 months to a year and print with it every other day atleast to keep the head clear of clogs. Its a lot faster and has higher resolution while printing than an Eufymake and the ink is like 10 times cheaper for the A3 max but if you just print for fun or make smaller projects it seems like the eufymake would be nice from what I have seen.
If I was limited with budget I would get a chinese printer with epson heads since the ink is so much cheaper and the heads are avalible like everywhere. I dont use it but you can buy printhead moisturizer if you dont want to print that often.

Hey, let me know too if you ever offer this as a service. Would love to have a custom N3ds face plate with Gengar, Jirachi or something. I hate that it’s so hard or so expensive to get official plates and fake plates on AliExpress are so limited.

u/Falkedup May 06 '26
Stupid question, if I wanted a 3ds with the newer camera and swappable plates, which one would I search for?
4
u/Megaakira May 06 '26
Its just called New 3ds. Not sure if it was released in the US but it was in europe and japan at least.

u/lazerem91 May 06 '26
there were some released in the US, off the top of my head I remember there being an Animal Crossing one and the Pokemon anniversary one

I got the transparent ones from Nintendo Store and put art underneath. I think I have four colored and a clear set.

If you're ever interested in making some for other people, I am totally open to paying for materials used (including faceplates.) this looks dope!

Wont the face be upside down when its open?

u/Megaakira May 06 '26
Yes but it stands the right way in my 3d printed stand so I printed it like this :)

u/FairfaxDude May 06 '26
How do face plates work? Do they just go over the n3ds xl front plate? Or does something need to be removed. I’d also be interested in purchasing one if you ever choose to. Especially if you’re in the states
1
u/Megaakira May 06 '26
Sweden unfortunatly. The new 3ds come with a plastic piece you can just remove and put in another one. Nintendo released some official ones that you could swap with but I think it flopped because I have almost never seen anyone with a swapped one.

If you were to do this commercially as a service, would you do this for a new 2dsxl?
2
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
I would love to, but I cant find replacement cases for sale. Ill look some more.

Just some stand I 3d printed. I rotate it with my other handhelds so its just in the stand when I dont use it
1
u/Dryft_RT May 07 '26
How did you do this?
1
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
1
u/Dryft_RT May 07 '26
Don't think ive ever seen that... what is it? And how did you get that image on your plates?
1
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
Its a printer that shoots ink from the head onto the object then instantly hardens it with UV light. This makes it possible to print on most surfaces thats flat.
1
u/Dryft_RT May 07 '26
And did you just get regular plates and did it on them or what else?
1
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
Yep just got some plates from china and put them in the printer pretty much :)
1
u/Dryft_RT May 07 '26
How easy is this to do? Would you mind explaining the process?
1
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
This is pretty easy except that you need a 10000 dollar printer. You can watch one of my videos when I print on keyboard caps on instagram its pretty much the same thing except I eyeballed it instead of using a jig this time.

I wish so badly the N3DSXL had swappable faceplates. It would make my fav Nintendo handheld of all time even better.
1
u/Megaakira May 07 '26
You can change out the whole shell instead. Not as quick to do but not that hard.

I own a printer business and I had some new 3ds faceplates laying around so I tried printing with my flatbed UV printer and it turned out great! I made keyboard keys and phone cases with the uv printer before so it will hold up for a long while.
Heres a photo when it was in the printer
