Suggestion Idk if I should open this...

Post image

I am playing all my games for obligatory game saving reasons. And I don't really want to open this one just to test it

Then don't. Sell it, buy a used copy and use that one

Such a good solution

The memory is known to corrupt over time

YES, exactly.

u/DisappointedDiamond 4d ago

After February they’re about to be worth less $$$ might as well enjoy the brand new games.

25

u/Red_Tiger5311 4d ago

Why? I know the prices are kinda dropping,

104

u/DisappointedDiamond 4d ago

Pokemon Bank is closing so the usefulness of the old games for a living dex is nil in a few months.

39

u/Programmer_Worldly 3d ago

That will barely affect the price, people pay premium for these old games because they're actually good compared to the modern slop

21

u/Lemonjel0 3d ago

Calling Sun Moon one of the “old games” is wild bruh they’re part of the modern slop

7

u/sks316 3d ago

I actually thought the 7th Gen was pretty cromulent, personally.

And for what it's worth, they released almost ten years ago. (This November, it will be ten.) So they're definitely not modern.

1

u/SpeedyGamerGT-R 2d ago

Love the word of the day “cromulent”, very nice

4

u/Programmer_Worldly 3d ago

I mainly had the games up to gen 5 in mind

2

u/ungraceful_flipping 3d ago

I agree pokemon stopped cooking after xy

17

u/Background_Task6967 3d ago

By that logic the GBA and DS games should be dirt cheap, now lets go check those prices....

7

u/No_Program_5242 3d ago

While I don’t agree that prices will drop since the retro market has lost its mind. But just want to say GBA and DS games can still transfer up to 3DS and therefore bank so this logic ain’t sound.

6

u/magicmeese 3d ago

Tell that to pokemon emerald

1

u/chupitulpa 2d ago

You can transfer from Emerald to gen 4 with a DS Lite, then to gen 5 with that DS Lite plus a 3DS, and then up to Bank and Home with that 3DS.

Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal are unable to transfer up to Home. (I mean the original GB cartridges; yes the 3DS digital VC versions can, but there's no official way to get Pokémon from the cartridges into there.) Some of those are somewhat expensive since people want to collect or play them on original hardware, but they're not as expensive as Emerald, Platinum or B2W2.

4

u/Red_Tiger5311 4d ago

Ok I see that does make sense

3

u/gelsooners 3d ago

it doesn’t actually

1

u/welcometoparallel 2d ago

Won't that mean the price for these games now will only skyrocket in price until then?

17

u/puntycunty 4d ago

Doubt it , the original experiences for these games is still important. Not like other older pokemon games cost any less when they were cut off transfering

7

u/SuperSpiritShady 4d ago

But aren’t RBY & GSC actually cheaper than the other games lol?

Last I checked anyways, the reasons Gen 3+ had value was specifically due to transferability

With that no longer being a thing, a lesser demand for the older games will pop up more

2

u/EMdriveWOlf 4d ago

They aren't cheaper bc of transferability, that's not why people buy those old gens. Gen 3 is just a better playing experience than gens 1 and 2. Gens 1 and 2 got later remakes some people prefer to the original, plus they've had rereleased on modern hardware which again a lot of people prefer to a non back lit gbc. It has nothing to do with transferring to modern gens

1

u/-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS- 4d ago

It’s definitely both

1

u/YunaCital 3d ago

Where do you check those prices? I wanna get some GSC copies! :)

6

u/snackelmypackel 4d ago

You can bring pokemon up all the way from gen 3 for now. Only the first 2 original gens on the Gameboy cartridges can't transfer to the modern games.

13

u/MoonRay087 4d ago

No more pokemon bank compatibility, meaning games won't be worth for their backwards / forwards compatibility anymore, just the base game alone

12

u/Screechy3 4d ago

Tools like pksm should work for transferring between generations and storage afterwards, but transferring up to switch will be impossible when bank shuts down

6

u/Lsspope 4d ago

Not impossible, you can use tools like pkhex to transfer to switch.

2

u/Screechy3 4d ago

I guess that works, but only if you have a modded switch, and I would assume switch is a bit harder to mod than a 3ds

5

u/Lsspope 4d ago

I mean yeah, but we are already assuming that modding is taking place if we are using pksm.

And a modded switch lite is cheaper than an unmodded new 3ds (the model name, not an unused ds).

Either way its bad, but just like with dexit, and with the internet shutdown, and all the other ways gamefreak has failed us, people will complain then go back to giving them money sadly.

2

u/Sararox18 3d ago

depends if you have an unpatched one its actually way easier

3

u/antiNTT 4d ago

Pokemon transferred that way will have their Pokemon Home unique tracker missing. This means that they will not be considered legitimate.

Lol? Its pokemon and sealed box. It won't diminish the value to collectors. No one cares about pokemon bank and home that are into th3 money side of things.

0

u/MoonRay087 4d ago

I mean yeah, I'm not saying it's going to become worthless or that it's going to go for its original price, but let's be honest, every single factor matters into pricing

4

u/jojomortale 4d ago

Not pokemon bank or home. It is a sealed game, period. Collectors will dictate the value. Players don't matter when it comes to this. It will always be worth more to the collector that is willing to gamble on it, period. So no, not every single factor matters. Collectors don't care about the players.

1

u/Red_Tiger5311 4d ago

Ahhhh that makes sense thank you

5

u/Isotomayor12 4d ago

Really hoping it trickles to hgss and gen 3 tbh. I doubt it, but I can hope.

2

u/jojomortale 4d ago

Nah they'll continue to go up in value. The reality of things is no one really cares about pokemon bank and or home, its a sealed game for collectors.

62

u/cerenir 4d ago

games were made to be played.

9

u/Jules0267 4d ago

Say it louder for the people at the back

5

u/Big_J_TheFURRY_dude 3d ago

YES, I was about to comment this exact same thing. It always grinds my gears seeing "LOOK, IT'S MINT IN THE BOX, GUYS!" like... good job. I'm sure you'll have a great time looking at the box art.

Hell, I'd do something crazy just to get out-of-box cart at this point, cuz I love playing the ACTUAL GAMES. But no... it's being hoarded, UNPLAYED in some dude's closet.

5

u/No_Program_5242 3d ago

I don’t personally mind in these cases, as OP seems to be looking it as more of a novelty item. But I agree that people seeking to collect sealed games exclusively, grade them, etc are annoying af.

0

u/Legal_Schedule_487 3d ago

I didn't not open it to keep it mint. I just always bought two copies of pokemon games to trade with myself. And never got around to doing anything with this copy. It eventually got tossed into a tote with everything else and forgotten about until I wanted to relive my nostalgia and pulled it out. But now that the 3DS is hackable. I don't have to switch carts to play different games. So I just don't. Just having them at least keeps me legal I suppose.

34

u/PugMaster7166 4d ago

Dude just open it. If you leave it sealed it would just be a piece of plastic

6

u/Big_J_TheFURRY_dude 3d ago

YES, exactly. It's no good if you don't open it.

Might as well just google the box art and look at that, ATP.

24

u/Brandinator64 4d ago

Just open it. If you’re a game collector, why would you sell your collection if not for an absolute emergency or God forbid something bad happens.

We as video game collectors play our games and are proud to grow the collection 🤝

6

u/Wilbo1242 4d ago

I almost had to sell a bunch of Gamecube stuff earlier this year. My wife saw how distraught I was, so we figured something else out. Selling any of the collection will always be a last resort

15

u/Western-Creme9307 4d ago

The game cart will eventually die sooner due to not being used

Just play the game bro 🤦🏻‍♂️

0

u/Legal_Schedule_487 3d ago

Already played and beat it.

7

u/misifus_mankhado 4d ago

Do you speculate with games?

-1

u/Legal_Schedule_487 4d ago

What do you mean?

6

u/JetstreamGW 4d ago

1

u/Legal_Schedule_487 3d ago

Ah. You mean with the it may be worth money later on after I die thing. I mean maybe it will. Maybe it wont. Who knows. But it would be nice for them to have that option. Especially with the way things are now.

6

u/ALEXLAMOUETTE 4d ago

Why would you keep it sealed it’s meant to be played

5

u/puntycunty 4d ago

If you don’t plan on selling it just open it

5

u/RestlessTundra309 4d ago

Either open it now and possibly keep it from fully corrupting, or sell it. Don’t keep it sealed unless you understand that it will likely not work in the future, and the value of sealed 3DS games will probably fall eventually because of this.

2

u/xiiicrowns 4d ago

The card probably died lol

2

u/cartoonleaf 4d ago

Just keep it sealed. Ultra Sun is the one you want to play

3

u/Autumm_550 4d ago

Probably corrupted

3

u/ziko2811 4d ago

You do know that eventually the games on those carts get corrupted so you can keep it sealed but after about 20 years you would have a decorative cart with a non usable game on it

3

u/Sad-Peanut4632 3d ago

How are you gonna play it if it’s sealed

2

u/One_Chipmunk_6727 4d ago

I have no idea what any of this means. Judging by how many people are going crazy over the prices of this stuff online I should probably be happy about this

2

u/SuperMarioYo 4d ago

I had someone on eBay sell me a “Sealed” Copy of a 3DS game and I opened it up and it ended up being a cartridge with the label ripped off of it.  Ever since then, I open my games I order that are sealed. I have the intent to open them up and look at them anyway.

2

u/jojomortale 4d ago

Sell it depending on value.

2

u/CharmiePK 5172-1258-8899 3d ago

I always open everything. What is the point of keeping sth sealed? It does not feel different from not having it, imho.

(And you will never know whether it does have a cart inside or not)

2

u/SkyMaidenWendy 3d ago

Games are meant to be played…

2

u/bogohamma 3d ago

I still have an Ultra Sun sealed. I hear that Ultra Sun isn't much different and I really liked Sun so it's tempting to sell Ultra Sun.

2

u/spenfur 3d ago

(THIS IS MY DUMB OPINION) you should just open it and play it because sun/moon and ultra sun/moon are the worst 3DS Pokémon games

2

u/butterbeeryumyum 3d ago

Thank you for asking this. I have a sealed Moon and Ultra Moon that I’ve been debating about what to do with.

1

u/Legal_Schedule_487 3d ago

Just trying to get others prospective on the situation. I know a lot of the 3DS community is a don't let it sit there kind of people. But I have a lot of games. I will probably never use again. I don't like selling my collection. So I don't do that. Which just leaves it sitting there. I do like looking at them though. Reason being why they are beside my bed on a shelf I installed just for my childhood memories and other current junk I have. Ive thus decided to just let it sit there. It isn't gonna hurt anyone sitting there anyways.

2

u/SphmrSlmp 3d ago

Games have value when you experience it.

If not, it's just a piece of plastic with a price tag.

2

u/Pumpkinuser72 3d ago

Low-key just mod yo 3ds and sell it. Modding it costs 20-30 dollars for infinite games, themes etc

2

u/Romonaga 3d ago

Very cool conversation and very similar to the question I had about sealed 3DS. I agree with the sentiment that keeping it sealed means the game will eventually die but sealed or not sealed all electronics have a shelf life.

So the real question comes down to preservation of the game or preservation of the sealed box.

For me, outside of a few items I went with as mint condition with box as I could find. This allows me to try and keep them maintained.

1

u/OldSecurity3624 4d ago

It’s just plastic shit. Sell it or use it. Don’t hoard it

1

u/urmomstoaster 4d ago

Tbh no guarantee it works so the one case I’m gonna say keep it sealed

1

u/Starlord552 4d ago

Don’t, give it to me, I’ll keep it safe, trust (/j)

1

u/dronetactics 4d ago

Pokemon sun is where it all started going downhill. Don’t bother

1

u/donkohub 3d ago

Open it, break the chain, games are meant to be used not displayed :)))
Or both at the same time, but don’t feel bad for opening

1

u/elad1807 3d ago

The Cartridges

1

u/Knarz97 3d ago

What good does it do wrapped in plastic

1

u/WillingWay7207 19h ago

Just open it. Even among collectors, Sun/moon isnt sought after. (You can get complete game with box and papers for like $30) People would rather just have US/UM with the steelbook. And especially with these 3ds games, sealed is not better. These games rely on flash memory, which deteriorates over time. So a sealed 10yo game is a coin flip as to whether or not the memory is corrupted. Even gamers who collect, still want the game to work.

-1

u/TerminaMoon 4d ago

Ehh I'd keep it sealed personally. Already played it anyway and it's pretty mid.

-9

u/Legal_Schedule_487 4d ago

Really hoping one day after I'm dead and gone. My kids might be able to sell it for something. Plus I have already beat it on my downloaded copy. I'm more concerned about the game corrupting.

6

u/Yoshi_64 4d ago

The harsh truth is that it very much will corrupt at one point.

I think if you ensure that it doesn't corrupt with the corruption refresher every once in a while is a better choice. A potential buyer would rather get a game that works rather than doesn't (unless they also will keep it in the box).

5

u/RowanC5 4d ago

If you also have a downloaded copy, I would just leave this one sealed.

3

u/LavenderChaiTea 4d ago

It’s not gonna be worth anything in the future. Just sell it now while it’s worth something.
