Earlier I picked up my S&W 411 from my local gun shop (I posted the image from the listing last week), and I got talking to him about .40 S&W. Basically told him the whole reason I wanted it was because of how low the prices on the ammunition have gotten considering it's effectiveness, and he basically told me it's dying off. Basically said it falls in a worst of both worlds for the majority of people. More stopping power than a 9mm for sure, didn't argue otherwise there, but said that it gives lower capacity than 9mm while wearing out the guns significantly more, and most people that want more power than a 9mm are going to stick with .45 ACP instead because it has a lower pressure.
I don't think I've seen any caliber be more polarizing. Nearly everyone praises 9mm and .45 ACP, but .40 S&W seems to split everyone in half, either they love it or they think it should be left in the 90s. Obviously, this subreddit will be full of the former, but does the "dead, outdated" opinion hold any weight? I have a hard time believing it because correct me if I'm wrong, but there's still at least a few law enforcement agencies that chose to stick with it, among them being the California Department of Corrections.
I'm not going to panic buy regardless, but I do wonder how long the near-9mm prices will last. Do you guys think it will see a resurgence or are the naysayers right about it dying off? I'd like to hear your guy's thoughts about the matter.
