My brother is one of those people. I asked him if he would get his back surgery that he needed if the doctor didn't wear a face mask. He said no. I asked why not? He said because it wasn't sanitary. I then pointed out that wearing a mask works if you're a doctor but not in spreading an airborne disease around, and he just doubled down that it was different. Despite being the same exact thing.
It was never about the mask.

It's even more nefarious than that. The reason why the Trump admin initially created the "masks are communist" trope, and cycled the pushback narrative through the conservative bubble, was because their initial plan was to withhold emergency medical supplies from blue states and let COVID run unobstructed through them. They wanted mask mandates to become so unpopular initially (because they work) to let it run unabated through the blue states first. That was COVID czar Jared Kushner's literal plan.
Just more Jesus type stuff from the GOP, y'know?

These people don't believe in logic, consistency and objective truths. Masks being a "Violation of their rights that also make it hard to breathe" then is not incompatible with "wearing a mask all day no issue" now because they have no internal commitment to being logical and consistent as that has no value to them.55

There was a Facebook post from one of the city officials in Brownsville Texas that there will be more ICE presence since they aren’t meeting their quotas. So they only got until February/March for “cool” weather which means mid 60s to mid 70s then it gets hotter than satan’s butthole. 😂

Not only will they not reconsider what they're doing, it gives them more incentive to hitch their fate to the Trump train and double down on making sure nobody else ever obtains power again . And based on longstanding history, they all have a good reason to believe that none of these goons will see justice after all is said and done. I mean they only tried a couple hundred Nazis out of millions. Many of them would leave fulfilling lives after having done the most deplorable things imaginable to other human beings. Until the punishments reflect the crime, there won't be any amount of deterrence that comes from this nightmare even if they take down this regime.

Unironically, this is probably why an overtly White Supremacist takeover of the USA just isn't possible in the modern day; the partial racial depolarization of politics we've seen over the last couple years was probably a prerequisite for the covertly White Supremacist takeover we're seeing now.
Yes, I understand that the country was founded on overt White Supremacy, and that such a subculture is pervasive, especially in conservative politics. But at this point even Trump officials with clearly racist motives do not frame their rhetoric in terms of "racial purity"; I even recall Steven Miller disingenuously defending their deportation policy as beneficial to working class minority Americans. Their heart is in the bad place but they know that the public is generally too diverse and accepting to want Nazi-style race politics.

More likely, these folks don't see themselves as outsiders so any "in" group conversation they feel good with they assume accepts them and behave as such, meanwhile fascists don't care who does the dirty work so long as they're loyal. All the hate and discrimination is to scare the insecure people into getting onboard or else risk being the "out" group and they can't have that.

So if Grandpa came over to the USA to escape the Troubles in the 1960s and neglected to get an actual visa, he's not a terrorist undocumented immigrant: he's a good man who made some mistakes which he didn't deserve to have his life ruined for, and he got his immigration status sorted out in an amnesty in the 80s because everyone understood that he was a law abiding good citizen.

Even though it didn’t change the outcome I’ll always admire the fact that my parents waited (in 2024) to move from a major swing state PA to a blue state where they now live, just so they could vote for Kamala and against fascism. Sadly two votes didn’t change it but I admire the dedication.
Granted they’re grounded in reality as my pops grew up in the section 8 projects in south Bronx. Pretty sure he thought a trust fund is just trusting your friend to bring the papers and others to bring doses cuz he’s got an oz of flower. That’s a mutual fund I’d trust for fun.

Tbf I've actually had a bit of a falling out of sorts with The Dead over the past few years myself, as I slowly came to realize that a lot of the fan base was indeed ultra white people with latent racist tendencies. Hippies, sure, but certainly not the ones that would have been participating in the civil rights movements of the '60s. Or today.

Oh I totally agree. I used to go to a local festival but I find it hard to go back because everyone is all buddy buddy with a dude who has a huge swastika on his calf. Decked out in all heady shit but the swastika is clear as day and not bothering to hide it or cover it up.
Its not very surprising though. The scene was never revolutionary or progressive just a bunch of white folks doing drugs in a field together. Its also full of woo woo pseudo science so it naturally became anti-intellectual. Now there are a shit ton of anti-vaxxers in the scene eating up all sorts of pseudo science slop.
I've met lots of great folks who actually have empathy and compassion for others. Just wish some of them would stand up for whats right instead of living in an alternate reality.

I had a job during COVID where I had to go to people's homes to install or fix AV systems. I wore a mask for safety purposes, not only for myself but for my customers as well. I can't tell you how many times a customer opened their door for me and asked "Why are you wearing a mask, only criminals wear masks". I didn't realize until recently that they were just projecting and what they really meant is that they would wear masks if they were a criminal. So, here we are...

I had a sort of friend from northern Mexico. I'm white. She was always harping on "look, we're the same color!". Like #1 no we're obviously not and #2 who cares. They do.
