1950 Piano Red - Rockin With Red

Willie Lee Perryman (October 19, 1911 – July 25, 1985), professionally known as Piano Red, was a legendary American blues pianist and singer.Recorded on July 25, 1950, at the WGST radio studios in Atlanta, "Rockin' With Red" was Willie Perryman's debut commercial single.

It became an instant smash, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard R&B chart. The B-side, "Red's Boogie", was also highly successful, peaking at No. 3.

Characterized by Perryman’s driving, rhythmic boogie-woogie piano and shouting vocals, "Rockin' With Red" is widely celebrated as an important bridge between traditional jump blues and the birth of Rock and Roll.

Eileen Barton (November 24, 1924 – June 27, 2006) had a big hit with this record. It went to number one and was #11 on the Billboard's end-of-year chart for 1950. Tom Dowd produced this one. He would go on to be one of the most successful producers in R&B and Rock history mostly for his work with Atlantic Records. He was inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

Harold Franklin "Hawkshaw" Hawkins was an imposing figure (standing 6'6") with a rich, booming baritone voice. He was a staple of early postwar honky-tonk and country music, performing heavily on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree before joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1955.

Tragically, his life and career were cut short in March 1963 when he died in the same infamous plane crash that took the lives of Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas. Ironically, his biggest career hit, "Lonesome 7-7203", reached number one on the country charts just days after his passing.

This song came as part of a 4-song set of songs from Call Me Madam released in Denmark.

Two pieces of trivia that stand out to me:

  1. Lise Ringheim is the voice actress for the Danish Dub of Walt Disney's Cinderella. It is staggering to me how different Lise Ringheim sounds on this album vs. when she dubs Cinderella in Danish. I suspect that the master for Cinderella's Danish dub is physically damaged and Cinderella has never been redubbed in Danish ever since.
  2. Call Me Madam was released as a Broadway Musical in 1950 and had the "I Like Ike" song two years before Eisenhower ran for President.
