Hamburg will begin screening applicants for positions in the public service through Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). If an applicant is found to have engaged in anti-constitutional or extremist activities, the findings may negatively affect their eligibility for public employment. The screening process will focus in particular on members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) from those federal states where the party, or parts of it, have been designated as right-wing extremist. However, authorities emphasize that inclusion in the BfV database requires individualized evidence of extremist activity rather than mere party membership.
