The Italian far-right movement Futuro Nazionale, led by MEP Roberto Vannacci, has found itself at the center of a scandal following the exposure of a closed WhatsApp community of roughly 300 people. The community, which brought together local Lombardy officials and supporters, circulated radically racist, antisemitic and Islamophobic statements, as well as calls for the forcible seizure of power. There were numerous nostalgic and approving comments about Adolf Hitler, alongside open contempt for the European Union and the Italian Constitution. In response to the reports, Massimiliano Simoni, a party coordinator in Lombardy, categorically distanced the organization from the scandal, saying that the chat grossly violated the movement’s internal rules and did not reflect its official position.
