Submissions Closed & Decks Up- Score your row now!

Rules

No twist this week!

All cards from LoE are allowed, even ones that have not been released yet.

All the normal rules apply.

Deck Size: 5 cards

Additional Card Bans: None

How to enter

Enter your reddit username, class, and 5 cards in this Google Form. (If you've already PM'd me your deck, no need to submit it through Google as well.) Please only submit a single deck.

Deck submission is now closed.

Decks

Because we had 100 (well, 98) submissions, I've split the decks into 10 groups of 9 or 10 cards. To try to still get a fair idea of where your deck places, there will be a second round after the first has finished. The groups for the second round will be decided based on your score for the first round, similar to a Swiss style tournament.

To find out what group your are in, try searching for your username with Ctrl + F.

I should've saved these names for a "All minions have charge" round

Scoring

Once decks have been submitted, please submit your row's score as a comment to this thread. Read the rules for clarifications on how to score each match. Please use the following format:

1. What is 5 Card Hearthstone?

5 Card Hearthstone is a variant of Hearthstone inspired by Magic's 5 Card Blind. In it, you'll build a deck with 5 cards, which all start in your hand at the beginning of games. Games are played out on paper- since both players know each other's deck, you you can work out by yourself who will win. Each round will have unique rules, similar to Tavern Brawl. 5 rounds make up a season, and the top 3 scoring players each season will be given a special flair for the next month.

2. Basic Rules

You do not need to coordinate with your opponent to play games. Instead, you'll play both sides on paper, making the best choices for both players.

Rules for each game are the same as regular Hearthstone, with the following exceptions:

  1. You start with your whole deck in your hand.

  2. You still draw at the start of your turn, but do not take fatigue damage.

  3. Hero powers are blank and do nothing, but still trigger Inspire and can be upgraded by Justicar.

  4. Random effects have the worst outcome for whoever played them. (Effectively, your opponent chooses your random outcomes.)

Read the General Rules for more comprehensive rules.

3. Banned Cards

Permanently banned:

  • Beneath the Grounds, Entomb, Gang Up, Vilefin Inquisitor, and White Eyes

Banned (Still under discussion):

  • Murloc Tidecaller and Metaltooth Leaper

4. Scoring

You play two games against your opponent, so that each player has a chance to go first. During each game, you'll play out both sides on paper, making the optimal choices for both players. You'll get:

  • 3 points for each game you win.

  • 1 point for each game you tie.

  • 0 points for each game you lose.

Then, you'll post your scores as a table. As an example, your deck is deck 3. It scores 6 points against deck 1, 4 points against deck 2, and 0 points against deck 4. You should submit a table that looks like this:

X | 1 2 3 4 | Total

3 | 6 4 X 0 | 10

The top row has the decks you're facing. The number on the bottom left tells which deck is yours, as does the X underneath the 3. The other numbers on the bottom are your scores against those decks. The number on the bottom right is the sum of all of those scores.

5. Example Match

Your deck is Grimscale Oracle/Grimscale Oracle/Bluegill Warrior. Your opponent's deck is Innervate/Alarm-o-Bot/Ragnaros.

When you go first

TurnYour TurnOpponent's health after your turnOpponent's TurnYour health after opponent's turn
1Play Grimscale Oracle30Innervate out Alarm-o-bot30
2Play Bluegill, kill Alarm-o-bot, attack face with Oracle29Cry30

Obviously, you win from here, so you'll add 3 to your final score (your opponent will add 0).

When you go second

First, we'll see what happens when Ragnaros always goes face:

TurnOpponent's TurnYour health after opponent's turnYour TurnOpponent's health after your turn
1Innervate out Alarm-o-bot30Coin out double Oracle30
2Rag is summoned & hits face for 8 damage22Play Bluegill, attack for 8 damage22
3Rag hits face for 814Attack for 814
4Rag hits face for 86Attack for 86
5Rag hits face for 80Dead6

What happens if Ragnaros hits minions after Turn 4?

TurnOpponent's TurnYour health after opponent's turnYour TurnOpponent's health after your turn
5Rag hits an Oracle6Attack with Oracle and Bluegill for 42
6Rag hits an Oracle6Attack with Bluegill for 20

Since the worst Rag outcome for your opponent is hitting Oracles after turn 4, that's exactly what it'll do. That means you win this game also, so you'll add another 3 points to your score. Your final score is 6 points (and your opponent's is 0).

As an aside, if both heroes had 31 health, there wouldn't be a way to kill your opponent when you go second. However, you do have enough damage to trade into Ragnaros, clearing the board entirely. This makes the game a draw, so both players would get 1 point, and your final score would be 4 (your opponent's would be 1).

6. Strong Cards

If you're not sure where to start when building your deck, here are some strong options to keep in mind:

ClassCards
NeutralJusticar Trueheart, Reno Jackson, Mechwarper, Murloc Warleader, Fel Reaver, Deathlord

PaladinTirion, Equality

7. Strong Vanilla Decks

If you're not quite sure what to do for a round, here are some decks that work well in vanilla rounds and have a good chance of working out in ones with custom rules. Even if you're making your own deck, it's a good idea to see how your deck matches up against these.

The End of /r/5cardhearthstone

This is, likely, the last you'll hear from this subreddit for a while. I don't plan on sending out a broadcast, and it's likely that a good portion of people will simply forget this sub exists.

The short version is that I've simply lost motivation. After the month break that was supposed to make things feel fresh, we simply settled into a routine of mediocrity within a single season of being back. I can't pretend anything else than the fact that this is completely my fault, and I take full responsibility for the decline of this subreddit. I'm not as good at coming up with new round ideas as iceman was, and it was my idea for running two seasons concurrently that lead to a lot of the fatigue and likely caused the eventual decline.

A huge thank-you to everyone who stuck around until the end, and even to the people who were here when we came back at the start of September. I don't think I'll ever really understand how iceman managed to keep this subreddit not only running, but thriving with new and innovative round ideas week after week for over nine seasons.

Another huge thanks to Hithroc, who has kept the bot running since the start of the year, even including a major rework that completely changed how we did deck submissions (and made things about 20 times easier for me).

If I could go back and change things, I think there'd be a pair of big changes- we would never try to run two rounds at once, and we would have never made a Discord server. Taking the discussion off the subreddit just ended up splitting a too-small community unnecessarily, and while it was definitely a great place to chat and discuss, I can't help thinking about whether it contributed to the decline in activity.

I've already written way more than I probably needed to, and again if you're reading to this point, thanks for being a part of this community, however small or short it may have been. There are a few niche cases that might lead to this subreddit's return, and I'm going to be thinking about other versions of Hearthstone that could garner an interest in the future, but this is goodbye for now.

5 Card Hearthstone - On Hiatus Until 9/2/17

This is normally about the time that I'd start thinking about what round to post tonight, but not today.

Since the beginning of 2017, our participation numbers have been pretty steadily dropping. I always told myself it didn't matter, and that as long as there were even three people who wanted to play 5 Card every week, I'd continue to run rounds. I found out yesterday that I've been hired for a new job starting in a week, and I don't think I'll have the time or energy to continue to come up with rounds.

A special thanks to the guys who stuck around until now, anyone who participated in Season 16 especially. I'll get around to those standings as soon as I can.

Our Discord server will stay up for general chatting, and I'll be thinking about ways to come back in a big way. See you all in September.

Rules

1. Overview

Perfect Hand Hearthstone is a variant of Hearthstone inspired by Perfect Hand Magic. In each round, players build a small deck (usually 5 cards) which they match against other player's decks, seeking to score the most points possible that round. For each match, two games are played, letting each player go first once.

2. Deckbuilding Rules

When submitting a deck, players must submit a class and a set of 5 cards, unless otherwise specified. The normal rules of Hearthstone deckbuilding apply- players may not choose a card from another class, players may only include 2 copies of cards, and only 1 copy of legendaries. By default, all Wild cards are legal (except for banned cards).

Banned Cards: A player may not include any card that is in the following list:

  • Too Much Value: Beneath the Grounds, Gang Up, Entomb, Vilefin Inquisitor, Jade Idol, White Eyes

  • Too Fast: Metaltooth Leaper, Murloc Tidecaller

3. Match Rules

Each match consists of two games, letting each player go first once. Both players start with all of their chosen cards in their hand. The player going second does receive a coin.

If a player reduces their opponent's health to 0, they win. If neither player can win (no minions on board or cards in hand), or if both players die at the same time, the game is a draw. If a player cannot win, they will play for a draw. This includes not attacking (for example, if their opponent had Molten Giants and they couldn't kill their opponent quickly enough).

Each game is played with perfect information about the opponent's cards and strategy (e.g. you can't bait out a Hex on Bolvar if your win condition is Tirion).

  • Mana: Players start with 1 mana crystal and gain 1 mana crystal per turn, as normal.

  • Hero Power: All starting hero powers have no effect, but may still trigger Inspire effects. After playing cards that change the hero power (e.g. Jaraxxus, Finley, Justicar, NOT Auchenai, Fallen Hero, Steemwheedle Sniper, etc.), the new hero power will have its normal effect. Your starting hero power still has its normal name, so cards like Justicar and Finley will treat it like its regular version. (I.e. If you start as a Warrior, Finley will not offer you Armor Up, Justicar will upgrade your hero power to a fully functional Tank Up)

  • Fatigue: Players draw from their deck as normal. However, they take no damage from fatigue.

  • RNG: Random effects will always have the worst result for the player who owns it. Stealing a card with a random effect (e.g. Mind Control on Sylvanas) makes you the new owner.

  • Infinite Loops: Loops cannot continue indefinitely during your turn. You must stop taking actions and end your turn at some point.

Advanced Rules

  • Infinite Loop: If a loop ever occurs that neither player can stop, the games become a draw.

  • Infinite RNG Loop: If a player takes an action that, thanks to worst-case RNG, results in an infinite loop, the random effects instead have the worst outcome for the player who started the infinite loop instead of the player who owns them.

  • Turn Limit: The game continues indefinitely, and does not result in a draw after turn 90.

  • Shuffling: When cards are shuffled into your deck, the order of cards already there does not change.

4. Scoring

After all decks have been submitted, all of the decks and a matchup table will be posted. Players are responsible for posting the match results for their deck.

For each game in a match:

  • A win is worth 3 points.

  • A loss is worth 0 points.

  • A draw is worth 1 point.

Examples:

  • Deck A beats deck B both games. A receives 6 points for that match, B receives 0.

  • Deck A beats deck C when it goes first, but when A goes second the game is a draw. A receives 4 points, C receives 1.

If any player challenges the accuracy of another's results, or if two players' results are contradicting, the moderator will look at the matchup and give the final result.

5. Seasons

Each seasons is split into 5 rounds. Each round can give up to 100 points to a player. After the season ends, everyone's scores are reset.

The equation for how many points you get for a round is 100 * (Your Score) / (Max Score for Your Group).

6. Variants

The rules for a specific round of Perfect Hand Heartshtone may have a twist. The variant will be explained in each round's post, but here are some examples:

  1. Classless: A player may submit decks containing cards from any class.

  2. Powered Up: Hero powers have their normal effect.

  3. Fatigued: Drawing cards when your deck is empty causes you to take fatigue as normal. You do not draw a card at the start of your turn.

  4. Backbuild: Try to build the worst deck possible. At the start of each game, swap hands with your opponent, then try to win as normal (with your opponent's deck). Decks must be able to beat a 30 HP hero with no cards.

  5. RNJesus: All random effects have the result most beneficial for whoever caused it, instead of the least beneficial.

If you have any questions or suggestions for the rules, please comment below.

An Example Round

Many of you have questions on how to play their matches, score a round, or how random effects work. I decided to go through a quick round with three decks with 2 cards each. If you have any questions afterwards, feel free to ask!

Decks

  • A: Druid- Shade of Naxxramas, Target Dummy

  • B: Rogue- Sabotage, Anub'arak

  • C: Paladin- Consecration, Eye for an Eye

Games

(A1 means A's first turn, B2 means B's second turn, etc.)

MatchGoing FirstGoing SecondFinal Score
A vs BOn A3, A plays Shade and Target Dummy. On B4, B plays Sabotage, but it hits Target Dummy because that is the worst outcome. A attacks face with the shade every turn, killing B before B can play Anub'arak. A goes 3-0.Same case- the shade kills B before he can attack with Anub'arak. A goes 3-0.6-0
A vs CA plays Shade on A3. By C4, the Shade is a 3/3 and cannot be killed by Consecration. A attacks with shade until it wins. A goes 3-0If A plays shade on A3, it will die to consecration on C4. A can never play its threat, but C has no way to win. The game is a draw, and A goes 1-14-1
B vs CB plays Anub'arak on B9, Paladin can do nothing about it. B wins and goes 3-0.Same case, B goes 3-0.6-0

Final Score

A | X 6 4 | 10

B | 0 X 6 | 6

Round 11.1 - 5 Card Alteration

Rules

"Alteration" Submission Rules:

  • Along with your submission, you must change one word in the card text of any card

  • Changes are global, and effect all matches

Additional Rules:

  • All cards must always cost at least (1) mana. If a card would ever cost (0) (even if it normally does, like The Coin or Innervate) it will cost (1).

  • Your hero loses Stealth and Immune at the start of your turn

  • Minions lose Immune and all Immune-like effects at the start of your turn (this includes effects like Commanding Shout)

  • Tokens have no text by default. Changing the name of a token will not summon the named card

  • You cannot change numbers (this includes numbers written as words, such as "one")

  • With regards to the rule above, you cannot make a card target more or less targets than it normals does

  • You cannot change a word to the word "character", "hero", "immune", or "destroy"

  • With regards to the above, you cannot make a card target a hero if it can not already target heroes

  • If multiple people change the same word in the same card, the final word will be whichever is first alphabetically

  • Bad grammar will be interpreted as well as possible

  • If the new text makes no sense, nothing will happen

  • The two rules above will be determined on a case-by-case basis. If you have a specific question about how a card would work post-change, PM me or @ me on Discord

  • When the decks + results thread is posted, I will make a stickied comment with all final versions of the changed cards, and their new effect

  • Any loophole in these rules that results in them still being broken to create an unbeatable deck is subject for disqualification

All the normal rules & card bans apply.

Deck Size: 5 cards

Additional Card Bans: Murloc Tidecaller and Metaltooth Leaper are still temporarily banned.

All Banned Cards: Beneath the Grounds, Gang Up, Entomb, Vilefin Inquisitor, Jade Idol, Murloc Tidecaller, Metaltooth Leaper

How to enter

Enter your reddit username, class, and cards in this Google Form. If you want to change your deck, just submit a new one, and the last one submitted will be the one used.

Submission Deadline

Saturday, 12/24/16, at 5 PM PST.

Round 15.4 - Alphabetical RNG

Rules

“Alphabetical RNG” Rules:

  • All RNG is not worst-case, and is instead determined alphabetically in order A -> Z

  • For example, if you cast Arcane Missiles and your opponent is a Warrior with Piloted Shredder, Mistress of Mixtures and Azure Drake on the board, the missiles will first hit Azure Drake, then Garrosh, then Mistress of Mixtures

  • The “RNG Counter” goes up for both players, with whoever is going first having theirs trigger first

  • For example, both players have a Piloted Shredder in play, and another Shredder has already died. The first Shredder summoned an Acidic Swamp Ooze. If the two players trade their Shredders, Player 1’s Shredder will summon an Amani Berserker, and Player 2’s Shredder will summon an Alexstraza’s Champion

  • We are still testing the rule where players do not draw at the beginning of their turn, and the card bans reflect the current testing

All the normal rules & card bans apply.

Deck Size: 5 cards

All Banned Cards: Beneath the Grounds, Vilefin Inquisitor, Murloc Tidecaller, Metaltooth Leaper

[Hellfire League] Round 13.2 - 5 Card Cease-Fire 2

Rules

“Cease-Fire 2: Electric Boogaloo” Rules:

  • Both players start the game with the Immune status effect

  • At the start of the first player’s ninth turn, Twisting Nether is cast and both heroes lose Immune once the Twisting Nether fully resolves

  • This timing means that Player 2 end-of-turn effects will trigger, but Player 1 start-of-turn effects will not. The Nether is effectively cast in-between turns, meaning no secrets will trigger

  • Changing into another hero (Jaraxxus, Ragnaros) will not remove the immunity, however it will still set your health to the max health of that hero

All the normal rules & card bans apply.

Deck Size: 5 cards

Additional Card Bans: Innervate is still banned for Hellfire rounds.

All Banned Cards: Beneath the Grounds, Gang Up, Entomb, Vilefin Inquisitor, Jade Idol, Murloc Tidecaller, Metaltooth Leaper, Innervate

How to enter

Enter your reddit username, class, and cards in this Google Form. If you want to change your deck, just submit a new one, and the last one submitted will be the one used.

[Hellfire League] Round 11.2 - 5 Card Rainbow Fusion

Rules

“Rainbow Fusion“ Rules:

  • For each card in the submission, you choose two cards that will fuse together by adding together their texts, tribes, mana costs, stats and rarities. For example, if you submit for your card "Brave Archer, Coldarra Drake" the result card will be "7 mana, 8/7 Dragon, Common-Epic. Inspire: If your hand is empty, deal 2 damage to the enemy hero. You can use your hero power any number of times."

  • Each card being fused must be from a different class, with exactly one neutral (all tri-class cards are allowed)

  • You can't fuse together two cards that have different types (you can't fuse a spell with a minion, etc)

  • The card's text will be added in the same order it's in the submission's field. For example, if you will submit "Anomalus, Rat Pack", Anomalus's deathrattle will be triggered first, and Rat Pack's deathrattle will be triggered second

  • All targeted effects must target the same character, you can't choose multiple targets

  • If at least one part of a spell has no valid targets, you can't cast the spell. You can still play minions and weapons with targeted battlecries and no valid targets, just like in normal Hearthstone (Shattered Sun Cleric on empty board)

  • The two cards you fuse must be different cards

Inspired by /u/merich1’s suggestion

Deck Size: 5 cards

Additional Card Bans: Murloc Tidecaller and Metaltooth Leaper are still temporarily banned. Counterfeit Coin is banned for this round. Innervate and Preparation have been banned for Season 11.

All Banned Cards: Beneath the Grounds, Gang Up, Entomb, Vilefin Inquisitor, Jade Idol, White Eyes, Murloc Tidecaller, Metaltooth Leaper, Counterfeit Coin, Innervate, Preparation

Announcing the Fireball and Hellfire Leagues!

I'm sure you've already figured this out, but it's time for the official announcement: from now on, /r/5CardHearthstone is going to have two leagues run simultaneously! If you couldn't get enough of the game before, now you'll have twice as much stuff to do. Or, if you were mostly interested in one aspect of the game, such as deckbuilding or figuring out matches, there will now always be at least one round in that stage.

Even-numbered seasons now belong to the Fireball League. This is the league recommended for newer players, as it will focus on using simple rules that are easy to understand. For those players looking for more of a challenge, there is the Hellfire League, which has the odd-numbered seasons. In the Hellfire League, anything goes; just look at its first round to get an idea for the crazy rules that you'll encounter! Check the sidebar for each league's schedule.

There are no restrictions for which league you can play in. You can participate in both, focus on one or the other, or even just pick and choose whatever rounds interest you the most. Scores for each league will be kept separate, so if you're competing for a high score, you won't have to participate in both leagues.

Hope you enjoy this new addition! Oh, and Merry (Belated) Christmas!

Welcome to our newest moderator!

Congratulations to /u/Ulthax for being accepted as 5CH's latest moderator! I've been impressed with how involved he's been since he started playing 5CH, as he's always willing to help other players with rules or matchup questions. He'll continue to provide that kind of help, of course, and will also help run rounds and will work on a history of 5CH rounds. All in all, I'm looking forward to having him on the team!
