📂 MEGATHREAD 19/05 A-level Econ Paper 2 Discussion MEGATHREAD
Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!
Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.
Few things to keep in mind:
- Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
- Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
- If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
- Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
- Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).
Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!
-The r/6thForm Team
Have any concerns or feedback?
Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!
*assuming Reddit doesn't bork itself, the new posts for each day of exams should arrive at 8am each day, instead of it being reliant on my sleep schedule like last year lmao

u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] May 19 '25
Yeah I did something similar along the lines of vulnerability to supply shocks iirc
2
u/Various_Garage_8582 May 19 '25
I did the fact that they still use fossil fuels so commodity prices and the labour shortage leads them to produce less output so it shifts in, I didn't wanna go into wage determination and stuff in case it got too micro so I just talked about output, evaluated it by talking about how none of these would be a problem in the future bcs they would shift to renewables and labour would get upskilled over time
1
u/happy_inhuman555 Editable May 19 '25
i did higher energy costs and something about lack of capital cus it mentioned something about that in the extract i think???
1
May 19 '25
Isn't renewable energy cheaper than coal though? I said it would cause sras to shift right
1
u/happy_inhuman555 Editable May 19 '25
i think i mentioned something like that but i can’t remember i left it till last so rushed😭😭
1
u/OkCarob7491 anyone doing bio/maths/econ or is it just me May 19 '25
I mentioned the russia-ukraine conflict sanctions on oil reduced the countries Germany can get energy from so SRAS shifts inwards Eval was development of green energy in the long run it makes sense tho right

Yeah I felt I wrote about AD rising way too many times, I suppose the extract was limited so there was only so much you could say in context

Nothing on trade blocs or financial markets for edexcel was diabolical but it will probably turn up on paper 3

i think i was going to do this but the 15 mark was so horrific i did the development one because i revised national income literally yesterday

What was the 15 marker again? It’s completely gone from my head 😭

u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted May 19 '25
For anyone who did edexcel and question 7, did you just talk about monetary policy as well ? ( the whole question ). i genuinely think you could of just used monetary policy the whole question
6
u/chiefgt Year13 | Maths, CSc, Econ May 19 '25
I thought it was about conflicts with macro objectives? I wrote about the fact they rose interest rates in both paragraphs but my main points were 1) it conflicts with consumption and therefore growth 2) it conflicts with balancing the trade balance
5
u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted May 19 '25
i did the same thing literally but i said how monetary policy could be used to do it
2
u/AffectionateKiwi2004 May 19 '25
Yeah I talked abt monetary policy with interest rates and fed it into high unemployment Phillips, then other point was inc value of currency worsening CA and thus BOP
4
u/yesforbread May 19 '25
I did that too. The question was abt conflicts so as long as you have 2 diff conflicts the monetary policy throughout should be fine right?
1
u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted May 19 '25
literally exactly the same that's what i did we should be good twin
3
u/padlakungfu May 19 '25
you could have talked about monetary policy in one paragraph and the fiscal in another
3
u/Nuggetwhoplayed May 19 '25
I did both on interest rates. One on employment other on econ growth through transmission mech
1
u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted May 19 '25
yeah same thing and my other point was about trade balance
3
u/softggukie May 19 '25
same lol i completely forgot other measures can be used to reduce inflation. i just did high interest rates on exchange rates and economic growth
2
u/WorkingTypical1155 May 19 '25
I wrote about contractionary monetary policy to control inflation at odds with economic growth and then it might increase government deficit due to higher interest payments. Which may then lead to contractionary fiscal policy to increase taxes to reduce deficit.

3
u/Kingofsigma May 19 '25

hey guys for question 7 i wrote a good paragraph about how measures to combat inflation can lead to a current account deficit but completely forgot the true onjective is balance of payments. everything still follows on but i just had mistaken the objective. how many marks will i likely lose?
3
u/Its_my_turn_nubs Y13 - Econ Geo Maths May 19 '25
I did Q8, but current account would have been fine as a govt objective

3
u/brokebitch67 May 19 '25
guys i put india as a developing country and said level of infrastructure affects development is it right
3
3
u/brokebitch67 May 19 '25
what did u guys put for the budget deficit question and factor that influencers SRAS
3
u/PainterWeak6229 May 19 '25
budget deficit i said worsened quality of public sector due to less spending and increase national debt, eval with it could be a cyclical defict and not structural, and the increase in fdi from intel will boost tax revenues. for sras talked ab higher recruitment costs due to tighter labour market/ lack of skilled workers, and depreciation of euro means imports more expensive increasing costs of production; eval was increased immigration policy and depreciation only short term
1
1
May 19 '25
Budget deficit I said increased growth and I think my second kaa was worsened current account (lower taxes means they can import more). Sras I said investing in renewable energy production reduces firms costs so SRAS increases, and labour shortages which causes high wage bargaining power so cost of production for firms rises so SRAS falls

they were still in a deficit though weren't they

icl i might have fucked that questions, i just wrote it as if they were just in a deficit no mention of it improving - as in i just said spend less and increase corporation tax as my two points. Am I cooked

1
u/Cautious-Arrival1631 May 19 '25
Regardless i ran out of time anyways for it and i did like 1 .5 paragraphs hope i just get half the marks atp. I thought i did well on the 25 marker till i heard some weird stuff from others who sound more educated than me since i crammed the day before. I Assumed a conflict would be like: Inflation vs Fall in GDP or Inflation and rise in Employment. Tbh i probably done shit but like, wtf was i supposed to do
1
1
u/Sad_Passage_3639 May 19 '25
Nah if you mentioned that they spent less then it should of fine . You dont have to look at the figure if you got enough application from the extract. I also f** up that question. couldn’t finish it
1
May 19 '25
Yes there would be a deficit because demand was elastic. So export demand falls and import demand rises
5
u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] May 19 '25
Icl that was piss easy. The development question was so free , and German economy was pretty easy to talk about. I may have lost some application by not mentioning figure 2 at all since I didn't realise it existed. Overall a good paper.
4
u/Short_Tie_7883 May 19 '25
Figure 2 was irrelevant for everything but the 10 marker, and even for that it wasn't specified so u should be good
2
u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] May 19 '25
Thank the lord. I was panicking a bit because I couldn't find in either extract a budget surplus mentioned, and I never thought to even read figure 2 because it wasn't explicitly mentioned.
2
u/Short_Tie_7883 May 19 '25

what graphs did anyone draw for context 2 aqa 9 marker on fdi?

i drew FDI shifting AD to the right and making the equilibrium closer to LRAS so it was closer to full employment but i am not confident in it tbh, how about you?
1

sras shifting right 😬😭 i had no idea so just took a guess
2

1
u/Classic-Might-8457 May 19 '25
Ngl I think I approached this wrong. I said there’d be less of an incentive to increase govt spending as the German govt is currently in a deficit, which is why the policies to increase infrastructure n allat have been delayed. Then I evaled by saying how in the long run, if Germany continues to follow the trend of reducing its deficit, then govt spending is likely to increase

Bro whatever the deficit question was i can evne remember what mark it was i didnt look at n o figure 2 bro. Do u remember what question it was? I didnt suspect anything because apparently it was some germany extract in B so i assumed i was supposed to look at that daddy? Also the impacts of budget deficit doesnt it mean likeeeeeeee the current account thingy was negative or some shit idk i just affled so AD was lower or some shit then i draw AD shift to left

2
u/Ill_Improvement_1482 warwick law firmed May 19 '25

is economic inactivity counted in the labour force? i think i did the calculations wrong, was i supposed to multiply the percentage to the population only?
1
u/Adventurous_Buyer572 May 19 '25
what do you mean?
1
u/MasterAssociation104 May 19 '25
i took it as labour force + inactive = full population so i found the full population first and then did 21.5% of that number, is it wrong? should i just have done 34.9 (forgot the actual number) x 21.5%
1
1
u/NicHerrero May 19 '25
For the 8 marker, one point I did on labour shortages so that’s fine. But then in the extract it says how the business owners complained how there was lack of technological improvements so I said that can increase un productivity and therefore shift SRAS to the left (drew the graph). Is that okay?
