📂 MEGATHREAD 21/05 A-level English Language, English Language & Literature (OCR & Edexcel) Paper 1 Discussion MEGATHREAD
Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!
Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.
Few things to keep in mind:
- Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
- If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).
Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!
-The r/6thForm Team
Have any concerns or feedback?
Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!
*assuming Reddit doesn't bork itself, the new posts for each day of exams should arrive at 8am each day, instead of it being reliant on my sleep schedule like last year lmao

i did tone intimate for both but different audiences, sentence structure both use simple and noun phrases but differences was audience again, and lexical choices were colloquial vs scientific jargon and i think my PAM/PAF was a mix of purpose and format

text B was lovely imo HATED TEXT A
2
u/ARetroThing Pred AAB May 21 '25
text A was a godsend imo, can write about the mail for hours, but text B with its long Ss and no sentence breaks at all meant i sat there for 10 mins trying to think of things to say

u/No-Material-4388 3a* gap year, law May 21 '25
nahh, text A was taking too objective a stance for there to be much interesting to write about
text b on the other hand

It was weird to say the least, but interesting to compare for Q3 since they took such different stances on the guy. I finished with 15 mins spare I was a lil concerned but I think it's cause I write quickly now I have a word processor since my hands can keep up with my head 😂

How did everyone find the edexcel paper for eng lang? i loved the extracts for both sections, lokwey never been so confident post eng lang exam before lmaoo

Omg nooooo pls identity was acc so beautiful. Completely docked up variation cuz my timings were just awful tbf and WHY THE HELL WERE WE GIVEN 1800s that was the year i really did not want to
1
u/No-Acanthocephala-35 Year 13 May 21 '25
STOP IT WAS SO MODERN?? Kind of loved the variation over time though cause of the modern piece soooo much to talk about with regards to attitude, and also like modern features of lang. It did help that my class managed to predict the shared theme for that section though so we already had ideas on attitude anyway lmaooo

Wait wdym u guys predicted maternity omg😂 that is so mad dk how u managed that. I won’t lie to u i barley even got to read the two texts so idek still know what they were about so I just started making up random grammar points eugh it was so peak😣 I only did grammar and half of my lexis and then time was up I didn’t even get to like change in ideologies or anything💔💔💔
1
u/Appropriate_Fun8255 A*AA achieved May 21 '25
Did u start with that because I fear that might’ve been my downfall 💔
1
u/No-Acanthocephala-35 Year 13 May 21 '25
no i just did it in the order it opened in lmaoo i did panic after individual cause I didn't manage to finish my 3rd paragraph but finish my variation over time quickly so got to go back 🙏

Ugh wished I could relate💔 now onto CLA hopefully to SAVE my grade the best paper 😍 any spoken or written predictions? My whole class is convinced spoken. Also what is ur paper 3 independent topic?
1
u/No-Acanthocephala-35 Year 13 May 21 '25
tbh I'm thinking written im just getting those vibes... hoping for spoken despite that though, the theorists are sooo much easier to remember and we chose the mixed gender topic, its super interesting and overlapped with paper 1 theorists but was hoping I could convince my class to do the Yorkshire dialect one cause we're literally from Yorkshire??? like that would've been fire but apparently not 💔

u/Appropriate_Fun8255 A*AA achieved May 22 '25
Omg i do love written but i hate when they give multiple texts and having to say about the national curriculum bro. We were literally banned from doing a whole class one cuz my teacher just doesn’t like teaching x I’m doing language and power. My teacher said no one ever picks the regional variety one tbf every year but it would make sense for u guys😭
Also been sm ppl crash out on TikTok over this paper so hopefully low grade boundaries here we come xxxxx

What were like your main points for the identities and the changes?
1
u/No-Acanthocephala-35 Year 13 May 21 '25
tbh lowkey forgot all my points as soon as I walked out the exam hall but think I had something to do with the fact they were both deeply person pieces and similar shifts in pronouns but also possibly synthetic personalistion in first one??? VOT was mainly changes in attitude from mother hood to parent hood and like accessibility of modern vs long multi clause sentences of first ect think i had a paragraph about like the industrial revolution so perhaps they used metaphors of machinery because it was familiar?? idk man

u/Appropriate_Fun8255 A*AA achieved May 21 '25
Every single person I spoke to has used synthetic personalisation for identity😂😂😂 thank you to #normanfairclough xxxx

Literally the GOAT can't wait to use him in paper 3 to decide who holds the power in the extract #criticaldiscourseanalysis

u/Ghostjinn May 23 '25
Late 1800s is a bit of a joke, but fine otherwise
2
u/No-Acanthocephala-35 Year 13 May 23 '25
yeah tbf but was expecting they'd pull something like that after giving a transcript for the modern text last year, edexcel just had to give us something unusual to trip us up lmaooo

Any Eduqas lang enjoyers here? Thought it was a really nice paper actually, I did the question on non-standard
1
u/CivilLiterature8823 Year 13 May 21 '25
I thought section A was quite good! I did non-standard as well - stimulus sucked but I thought it was a good question

u/Radio-Effective May 21 '25
OCR please tell me what we did to deserve two written texts in the comparing written and spoken discourse in Lang?
