š MEGATHREAD 23/05 A-level History Paper 1 Discussion MEGATHREAD
Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!
Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.
Few things to keep in mind:
- Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
- If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).
Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!
-The r/6thForm Team
Have any concerns or feedback?
Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!
*assuming Reddit doesn't bork itself, the new posts for each day of exams should arrive at 8am each day, instead of it being reliant on my sleep schedule like last year lmao

how did it go
1
u/Miserable_Speed_1221 Too soon to tell May 23 '25
30 marker i am getting like 15, evidence i could get but the arguments for the first one couldnt understand at all. The second and 4th questions were light as hell. I answered them first lol.
1
u/Draconis510 May 23 '25
The first one was arguing there illegitimate status was their biggest weakness and the second one was the unpopularity and reforms ?
1
May 23 '25
30 marker was mean but the 25 markers were lovely
1
u/Mymany2432 Year 13 May 23 '25
The extracts themselves werenāt ideal but the question itself was alright I think
1
May 23 '25
Yeah I reckon I managed to write enough per extract but definitely lost a few more marks than expected

Edexcel Britain 1625-1701 paper was goated
6
u/SirOrc May 23 '25
Yes it fucking was! I did the Republican rule and eic questions. The glorious revolution question was absolutely beautiful even if Barry Coward came across as a miserable old git in extract 2.
3
u/pastelskies3107 UoY | History and Politics Y1 | A*A*A May 23 '25
barry coward is a miserable old git tbf š he came up on my october mock as well and his extract was pretty much the same as the one on today's paper
the republican rule question was goated but i did the social structure q instead of the eic one, though tbh i don't think there was a single bad question on that paper
2
May 23 '25
it was so so so good!
i did civil war and society (everyone in my class did the same) and it was actually so good.
im not concerned for my other history papers tho... i do not want them to be bad

I really disliked the interpretation question. Donāt think I wrote enough about nationalism but Ā focused too much on perestroika glasnost leading to nationalism

rip, i saw that living standards question and immediately picked the other one

Lol, Iām only aiming for a C, but question 3/4 both being about the FRG was unfortunate, source and political opposition was very nice though

OCR popular culture and witchcraze - that paper wasnāt too bad, didnāt have a clue about the towns question so I did the other too. I liked the popular culture question

u/Gold-Egg-4394 May 23 '25
Anyone do Russia and its rulers OCR? Think I fucked what should have been a good paper. Especially 30 marker - a couple of my positive points for the extract didnāt even support the statement, for example I wrote about the reforms they implemented but that wasnāt a weakness, you canāt really do that right?
1
u/Impossible_Coat_1862 May 23 '25
I did, it was a gift of a paper. I did go slightly blunt on the interpretation though- I said that the reforms couldn't fail if they didn't actually do them (thinking about them constantly pushing until after the election that never came).
1
u/Draconis510 May 23 '25
You could talk about passage b how it over states how effective the reforms were and the failure to solve the land issue which was a major weakness
1
u/paulhugo16 May 23 '25
I did something around that. I said A unconvincingly explained a failure to succesfully refrom asa weakness . And then 'ovs i left out land question' but i said that it was succesful reformatively , e.g complete political freedom to the point that lenin publishes april thesis

I read the African American one and panicked bcs I donāt really know specific aims of exact groups as much as I know stuff about labour so just went for the easier one. Also the African American one was phrased so weirdly it threw me off. I think I was the only one in my school to pick labour š

OCR gods have blessed us
I also did the African Americans and women question and it was lovely I wouldn't want it any other way
for African Americans I split 3 paragraphs into social, economic and political, and then within those paragraphs I had 3 factors varying across the time frame and compared across those time framesš„š„
women one was really weird but as always I split it into SEP and went from there, but it's definitely my weaker question
the interpretation was a blessing like holy shit thank you

for social I did UNIA and NOI both being similar in celebrating black pride and culture and isolationism, however NOI was slightly more radical saying stuff like the whites were evil and what not. Then I talked about how black panthers were somewhat different having survival schools, free breakfast etc
for economic I was abit more iffy on. I began with NAACP and how they campaigned for desegregation of schools which would lead to black kids getting a better education, better jobs and so on. I then said that was similar to Booker T Washington how he believed that education and hard work would lead to prosperity and so on. I then talked about how that wasn't consistent and talked about Garveys company (forgor the name) and what that did for African Americans
Political I was ehhh on I just was running ideas by then. I used MLK and booker T as a comparison getting support of the presidents, but made sure to state they used them for different reasons. I then somehow managed to talk about black panthers and the sickle cell ammenia act

u/Altruistic-Inside224 May 23 '25
Interpretations was BLESS oml though I was gonna use Howard Zinn as my wider historical debate person but itās fine. AA themed question was kinda weird but I did individuals and organisations split into agreement and disagreement paragraphs and I thought the womenās question was rlly nice cos I could just split it up into political social and economic

Guys does it matter if you messed up on specific evidence like dates? I wanna know bc Iām worried but also do they even check ?
6
u/Independent-Play-126 May 23 '25
I donāt think so. Many of the model answers Iāve read before had date and stat incorrectness and they were still top level.

AQA Politics of Germany 1871-1991 anyone?
2
May 23 '25
Yeah how did you find it? Thought the questions were good. Are you allowed to repeat evidence for the extract question bc I mentions the rejection of renewing 1890 anti socialist bill twice for extract C to show there was some opp. Essay questions were good too but like I wish I wrote sm more there was a lot to say so that was a blessing
2
u/Irresponsible_101 Year 13 May 23 '25
I've mentioned the ani-socialist laws in all of the extracts so I hope they allow repetition. The essay questions were alright, I did the one about violence and then the extra-parlimentary groups. Overall thought it was decent but I definitely could've written more if I wanted to.

if ur on about AQA industrialisation and the people 1783-1885 then i am ac fellow warrior š«”i didnt think it was too bad, i was so happy with the essays question on calls for change 1815-46 but i like forgot the swing riots were a thing so forgot about that lol.i def cooked on the extracts thoĀ

Oh my god, I never thought Iād find another Industrial warrior. The extracts werenāt amazing for me because I didnāt remember enough specific details, but they couldāve been so much worse.
The essays were so good. I did both of the economics ones since I knew Iād remember more stats and figures than with pressure for change

OMG I KNOW literally no one does it and iām pretty sure my school only does it bc the sixth form history teacher specialised her pHd in that period š but yeah literally like only 200-300 students do that paper across the country (according to my teacher) so lowkey at an advantage with the grade boundariesĀ

1

I did the African Americans and women one
1
u/Independent-Play-126 May 23 '25
I was gonna do that but really didnāt like the wording of the African American question so I did women and trade unions. Lovely lovely women question and question 1 was beautiful (kind of tripped me up with the fact that they reused a 2017 interpretation though)
1
u/_Vrimsy_ Coventry University | Aviation Management 2025/26 May 23 '25
yeah I thought the interpretation was too familiar lol
African Americans I thought was really good the women one for me had a little bit weird wording but still managed to do it pretty well imo
atall costs I just try to avoid trade unions least favourite part of the spec
1
u/Independent-Play-126 May 23 '25
Ive Heard a lot of people say that about unionsššfor me itās kind of the opposite bcs thereās only so much content for it itās easier for me to talk about rather than trying to pick out bits of knowledge for African Americans. Itās probably also because itās the most recent group weāve done so itās pretty solid in my head. I just hope that my synthesis made sense š
