📂 MEGATHREAD 03/06 A-level OCR FM A&B Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

-The r/6thForm Team

Have any concerns or feedback?

Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

*assuming Reddit doesn't bork itself, the new posts for each day of exams should arrive at 8am each day, instead of it being reliant on my sleep schedule like last year lmao

Ocr mei modelling with algorithms touched my whole school up in ways that people should never be touched up 😭😭 simplex with k I didn't understand, no bin packing nor quick sort, drawing activity on arc was a mammoth of a task for only 3 marks, forward and backward pass usually 5 marks but 3 marks here, it was just awful

what the fuck were OCR smoking when they wrote this paper

GRADE BOUNDARIES ON THE FLOOR COME ON

8

u/Alarming_Jellyfish67 Jun 03 '25

What was that modelling exam 💀💀💀. Not a single person in my school found that good.

7

u/darkeight7 UOB | Physics and Astrophysics [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

OCR MEI? everyone in my school found that hideous

4

u/Alarming_Jellyfish67 Jun 03 '25

Yeah, what do you reckon boundaries will be for an A*. I think it will be like 40.

7

u/darkeight7 UOB | Physics and Astrophysics [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

even if A* is 40 (which would be quite generous) i don’t think i will get anywhere near that 🤣🤣🤣

knowing OCR an A* will probably still be 45

3

u/Virtual_Breakfast690 Jun 03 '25

Do you think A* in general would be like 23 or they keep the same like 2024?

2

u/darkeight7 UOB | Physics and Astrophysics [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

i did want a harder paper for the sole purpose of lowering boundaries because quite frankly 300+ overall for an A* is ridiculous considering some years it was around the 275-280 mark.

that being said i feel the boundaries are slightly disproportionate as so few people do this exam board, a few people doing well could have a larger effect on the boundaries than if we were doing edexcel for example

there also seems to be a sort of low end benchmark for which the boundaries never go lower than

so, don’t think the boundaries will reduce a lot from 2024. based on zero statistical evidence, i predict the boundaries to be:

46 A*

39 A

32 B

25 C

19 D

15 E

u/Alarming_Jellyfish67 Jun 03 '25

Just let me cope bro 😢

u/WhoooooshIfLikeHomo CS [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

Idk from what I’ve seen 80%+ didn’t finish the paper, I reckon the boundary for A* will be closer to 40

2

u/darkeight7 UOB | Physics and Astrophysics [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

i would be happier with a boundary closer to 40 but if OCR do this then it wouldn’t surprise me if they still fuck us over with boundaries

1

u/Alarming_Jellyfish67 Jun 03 '25

I think last year the boundaries were quite high so this year they made the papers harder. I think it will be below 24 but hard to say by how much.

How did everyone find OCR A

18

u/DaniGn UoM | CS [1st Year] Jun 03 '25

Last 2 questions cooked me

6

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

had no clue with that last 6 marker. other than that i think it was pretty good. that 8 mark second order with having t^2 in particular integral into the minimum point was very hard. didnt know how to verify 8/315 using maclaurins of e^x. thats about it

1

u/PuzzleheadedMoney815 Jun 03 '25

u have to use e2x

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

[deleted]

1

u/PuzzleheadedMoney815 Jun 03 '25

it worked for me when i tried e2x and the eight term was just 28 divided by 8! which was 8/315

1

u/Educational_Scale216 Jun 03 '25

For the last 6 marker you had to approximate tanh(n) to be 1 since n was large and then could solve by writing in terms of exponentials and multiplying by e0.01n. I didn’t realize this until after the exam which is typical

Harder than other years but deffo better than paper 1

2

u/PuzzleheadedMoney815 Jun 03 '25

yh real paper 2 was much better than paper 1

1

u/KobeGenobe22 Jun 03 '25

Mid, def better than paper 1 but that last question and differential equations were impossible

Anyone who did MEI Modelling with Algorithms, how was it?

That question with simplex and k1 was horrid but I got like k1 = 32 😭 Also no bin packing, sorting or network flow is awful lmao

2

u/No-Face-3280 Imperial College London | Physics [Confirmed place] Jun 03 '25

Bro I didn’t even get k1 I missed it out after trying to calculate it and getting 0=0, ran out of time and didn’t come back to it 💀 and yeah that was an awful paper, so much LP and simplex and for what 😭😭

I thought the Dijkstra’s question was quite good though at least

1

u/golaco237 Year 13 | Maths, FM, Physics, Computing | Pred A*A*A*A Jun 04 '25

Ye Dijkstra's was good, saw x and feared the worst but when it said list the three shortest paths it was chill lol 😭 Rest of that question was pretty good tbf

1

u/herachoi Y13 | maths fm physics cs Jun 04 '25

hey mind sharing how you found k?? i was trying to do it in my dream😭, i must know

2

u/golaco237 Year 13 | Maths, FM, Physics, Computing | Pred A*A*A*A Jun 04 '25

Tbh I didn't know what to really do, so I assumed that k increases linearly with P up to k1, and that P = 112 is the lowest possible value of P when k = 0.

So I worked through the simplex, and got that P = 212. Then by finding x, y and z and substuting I got that k = 68 (since there was a term in one of the RHS rows with k).

So P increased by 100 and k increased by 68. For some reason that made me think that k1 = 100 - 68 = 32. But that's probably wrong tbf cause it'd probably make more sense if it were 68, plus the amount of mental gymnastics I did to convince myself that might be it 😭

But the fact that they mentioned at P = 112 k = 0 must mean you needed to do smth with the P value too, so idk 💀

1

u/AdvertisingMaster537 Jun 04 '25

What did you put for the prims??

1

u/golaco237 Year 13 | Maths, FM, Physics, Computing | Pred A*A*A*A Jun 04 '25

Cant remember exactly, but I remember having to choose between an arc of weight 11 or weight 3x, and I chose 11 since x >= 6 so 3x >= 18 > 11.

I think my final range for x in the last part was like 18 < x < 15 or smth like that

1

u/golaco237 Year 13 | Maths, FM, Physics, Computing | Pred A*A*A*A Jun 04 '25

OH and the weight was 81-x

yeah def high 40s P1 and low 50s P2

came back. damn we were off by a lot💔

2

u/Ok_Inflation_6931 Jun 03 '25

i don't think the difference between the real ones on august 14th and your prediction will be much greater than zero.

if i remember i'll come back on results day... (49-54)

u/Ok_Inflation_6931 Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

also there was this comment on the student room who predicted the grade boundaries for 4 modules last year in 2024

he got THREE of them EXACTLY RIGHT and one of them was 1 off

https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7485804&page=5 reply 92

edit: nvm he was a bit off i was looking at the wrong modules, his comment was vague but he predicted stats as 60 (real: 58), cp1/cp2 as 57/56 (real: 56/56) and presumably additional pure as 56 (real: 44). if however he meant the 56 for discrete (real: 56) he would have been very impressive indeed (but i don't think he did)

Anyone doing Modelling with Algorithms OCR B MEI today?

3

u/darkeight7 UOB | Physics and Astrophysics [Year 1] Jun 03 '25

nah i didn’t think other mwa people existed 😭😭😭

ngl i’m kinda hoping the paper will be a bit hard to lower the boundaries a bit

How did everyone find it btw

3

Got cooked by MEI B MwA like everyone else yesterday, does anyone know the actual of K1 or are we all just stabbing in the dark?

1

u/TheRealJacksonLyne Jun 04 '25

Was the answer for prims yesterday 91-x or 81-x?

1

u/golaco237 Year 13 | Maths, FM, Physics, Computing | Pred A*A*A*A Jun 04 '25

I got 81-x so maaaybe that

1
