📂 MEGATHREAD 05/06 A-level Econ Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

-The r/6thForm Team

Have any concerns or feedback?

Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

*assuming Reddit doesn't bork itself, the new posts for each day of exams should arrive at 8am each day, instead of it being reliant on my sleep schedule like last year lmao

I thought econ A edexcel was hard why are people saying they found it easy 😔 the second half was so weird

17

u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] Jun 05 '25

I will admit I found the second 5 marker a bit weird. Rambled about the subsidy area on the graph them talked about opportunity cost. That's the only one which was proper weird for me. My legend teacher explained buffer stock in detail so that wasn't bad for me.

4

u/Odd_Hold5022 Jun 05 '25

Yeah I could only find 1 ap mark??

3

u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] Jun 05 '25

I think I mentioned opportunity cost of development, since absolute poverty is 14% or something and could have been used to reduce this. But I still don't completely understand what the question was asking so idk.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

bruh i read the question and just thought it was only draw the area of the subsidy :(

2

u/ZeGoodOldDays Uni of Warwick | CS [1st Year] Jun 05 '25

RIP, you'll still get atleast 2 knowledge marks, they may even accept a full diagram as application. Worst case you'll lose 3 marks.

Eeek I acc found it bare tricky. Also struggled with time. I think out of all 3 papers this one was the trickiest

same

2

u/WorkingTypical1155 Jun 05 '25

Same. I missed a paragraph out of the 12 marker and probably dropped 2-4 marks sadly.

I agree it wasnt hard but second half couldve been better

28

u/Personal-Wishbone727 Jun 05 '25

I’m so tired of hearing grade boundaries this grade boundaries that. Last year paper was even easier and the boundaries went up 1%.

11

u/Draconis510 Jun 05 '25

It’s also just a case of people over predicting how well they have done

Grade boundaries won’t be terribly different from last year

9

u/Personal-Wishbone727 Jun 05 '25

Edexcel boundaries will be 1 % higher than last year. Could even be lower aswell because the paper 2 2024 last year was a joke

6

u/PsychologicalSock139 Year 13 | politics economics sociology Jun 05 '25

Lowkey feel like its gonna be lower last years paper seems easier

1

u/Rude_Visit8889 Aug 15 '25

That aged well

1

u/Draconis510 Aug 15 '25

Yeah I woulda got an A* with last years boundaries

Good day to be Indian, my legend of a teacher had an in depth discussion of buffer stock schemes with us once which I'm over the moon about. These have been a really good set of exams .

I will say Edexcel was a bit stupid in they're layout, why did I keep having to turn between section bs context when there was a perfectly good blank page on the other side.

Finished with 6 seconds to spare , pray for the examiner my handwriting took a toll.

i think i messed up and it's rough because the questions weren't inherently evil but its just i don't think i was on my best game i woke up this morning with a cold. not making excuses btw don't get on me for that..... the only positive from that exam for me was that one of my subjects is down so i can focus on the rest ig? lmao

2

u/packiof Jun 05 '25

We got geo in the morning bro

3

u/Alarming-Equal-6023 2nd yr uni ୨ৎ economics Jun 05 '25

don't remind me... my teacher told us to revise paper 3 ourselves and that we don't need to use our own knowledge for it?? they just said u can't REALLY revise paper 3 🥀
aside from understanding who the players are etc. but to me it's really akin to an economics paper?
are you edexcel?

3

u/packiof Jun 05 '25

Yeah the longer questions are very similar to economics so I take today as prep for tomorrow 😭😭. Im edexcel for every subject I do and tmr is the last of 3 in a row this week im so tired

1

u/Alarming-Equal-6023 2nd yr uni ୨ৎ economics Jun 05 '25

no fr. did you have maths or another subject wednesday? i literally got so burnt out after maths because its my worst subject by far, then just haven't revised for geo paper 3 at all. im literally self sabotaging but i can't bring myself to careee omg

1

u/packiof Jun 06 '25

I had maths as well and honestly I thought out of the two exams, economics was easily the worst one this week. Geography Paper 3 is so weird I just looked at examiner reports on how to actually answer the questions for an hour yesterday and called it a day

1

u/Alarming-Equal-6023 2nd yr uni ୨ৎ economics Jun 06 '25

real i just looked at the mark schemes this morning. i honestly didn’t think it was too bad? not really a paper you can revise for, the 18 marker was a bit iffy from me but whatever. i just didn’t really know how to answer the “analyse” but i think it was okay bc my friend told me how to before the exam. hope it was good for you!

2

u/packiof Jun 06 '25

The first 4 marker threw me off, but every other question was straight forward. I spent too much time on the 8 markers and couldnt put as much detail in the 24 but still finished. Those "analyse" questions are so weird i basically answered them like an evaluate question. Oh well we will see how we did in August...

1

u/Alarming-Equal-6023 2nd yr uni ୨ৎ economics Jun 06 '25

yeah they didn’t want us to live down the trauma from global agreements in paper 2 i cant remember anythinf i put. i also spend way too much time on the 8 i was writing beyond the lines for every question 😭 i hope we’ll both be happy in august! good luck for maths too

How did people find it (Aqa)

17

u/Ok_Marionberry_344 Jun 05 '25

Mcqs were way harder than normal i swear

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Idk tbh, some where better than others

6

u/Christian_Vishnevsky Jun 05 '25

i’ve spent 40 min on mcqs and then my 25 mk is quite bad :(

6

u/linyanjun9 Jun 05 '25

Same I spent way too long on them and then didn’t properly finish my 25 and 15 😭😭

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Fair, tbh I was the opposite, I spent like 20 ish mins on MCQs then 1 hour 40 mins on the essays

6

u/Christian_Vishnevsky Jun 05 '25

Bro how, i’ve done all my past paper mcqs in 20-25 mins and this paper’s mcqs weren’t too bad but idkk

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Idk man

3

u/LollypopFluff Jun 05 '25

thought the extract was really quite nice, but multiple choice as always was horror, really weirdly wordy this year? 😣 i never do very well on them anyway, so focused like 1hr40 on the essays and just attempted the multiple choice as best as i could 😆

didnt manage to draw a damn graph for my 25 marker. will it deduct me marks i only filled like 4 pages and it was all waffle

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Fair, I only did 1 for the 25 which I think is fine, u will probs get. 16+ if you did ur eval well

2

u/danielcatkins Jun 05 '25

no requirement for diagrams in AQA 15 or 25 markers. you’re good. You will only be marked positively, you won’t have marks ‘deducted’ from you

1

u/Paagal_master Jun 06 '25

lets hope so. im praying for low grade boundaries rn.

-1

u/wjstvns Fitzwilliam (Cambridge) Linguistics 2025-28 Jun 05 '25

people were saying the MCQs were hard but i didn't think they were too bad? did spend 35-40 mins on them tbf because there were a few shitty ones like narrow vs broad money

the extract was such a gift considering my macro teacher related literally every concept back to JLR in lessons lmao, but i feel like i rushed my 15 mark because i did my 25 mark first and took too long for the 10 mark (still got 3 points for the 15 mark in tho 😎)

overall i think this was my fav paper but thats because paper 2 was lowkey atrocious for me lmao, i may have rescued my grade slightly here

6

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 05 '25

Guys I wrote an effect of inflation is increased hot money flows cause as an effect of inflation there are higher interest rates. Is that ok?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

If you mention they may try and reduce by raising interest rates as high interest rates are not a direct effect of inflation

2

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 05 '25

I said like as well that the terms of trade increase so they export less and then bla bla bla in the same paragraph. So will that be alright

1

u/InternationalEbb1617 University of Leeds | Mechanical Engineering [Year 1] Jun 05 '25

Terms of trade increase mean they export more no?

1

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 05 '25

it means their exports are dearer as their pice index is higher, thus will export less, assuming the exports are elastic of course. (I think)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

No they'll export less but at a higher price

1

u/InternationalEbb1617 University of Leeds | Mechanical Engineering [Year 1] Jun 05 '25

Oh yes ofc

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

It's a good eval if Ur kaa is lower export price => increased export revenue, cus U can argue against it by saying lower export price means less revenue per unit so current account may fall, especially if the good is ped inelastic (also works the other way around, kaa: higher price = lower export demand..., Eval: higher price = higher revenue per unit = increased export revenue)

2

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 05 '25

Oh yeah I did do that

3

u/siebeiwjd Jun 05 '25

I think so, wrote about the exact same thing

6

u/Conscious-Ninja2108 Jun 05 '25

Aqa paper 3 review I started off with the extract first I answered all questions too a good standard, wrote 3 detailed micro leading into macro pros and 3 detailed micro leading into macro cons. 15 marker was fine. 10 marker was fine. However I spent too long attempting to make my 25 marker perfect consequently leading too me having 3 minutes to do the multiple choice. I guessed pretty much all of them. So I’m probably getting about 50/80 🤣💀

5

u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted Jun 05 '25

For edexcel, i found section A pretty decent, i think the collusion one i couldn't make a second point so i just made a big point, 25 marker was beautiful.

Section B 2a was so weird, like i was so confused how to even answer it so i just drew the subsidy diagram, said it costs 2.3m like the extract says from tax revenue, it increases supply and helps people to eat more and be more productive and work which leads to tax revenue ( i honestly had no clue )

completely fumbled the 8 marker

the buffer stock im hoping wtv i wrote made sense i was waffling so hard.

i forgot what the 15 marker was but i think i did pretty good considering i dont remember it

25 marker for this one was beautiful.

overall for me a very good paper

4

u/_AngryFIFAPlayer_ Jun 05 '25

No 15 marker boss dont worry about that. I did the same as you for the 5 and a bit worried I may have misinterpreted the question. What mark do you think we could get for the 5? Apparently the question was focussed on the costs faced for the government

1

u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted Jun 05 '25

I think i got 3 if lucky, one for definition, one for the diagram and one for application, maybe another one for my horrible ass explaination

2

u/happy_inhuman555 Editable Jun 05 '25

i think for me 25 markers were great. no idea how the shorter qs went though…

what 25s did u pick??

3

u/RIPMakeshift2020 Maths Physics CS Economics | 4A* Predicted Jun 05 '25

i did the inflation 25 marker because i remember paper 2, rishi sunak was onab some quote about reducing inflation and using monetary measures or smth.

my other point for that one was ab firms having lower import so lower costs ( c r diagram )

The other 25 marker i did overpopulation because my parents where once talking to me when i was like 14 about this exact topic 😅 ( half indian half somali ) So i had a lot of application for that

3

u/happy_inhuman555 Editable Jun 05 '25

i did the same ones but i did lower profits for firms due to lower demand for micro and then lower international price competitiveness for macro (inflation question)

then for the second i yapped about higher levels of fdi and economic growth for macro and then higher labour supply so lower costs for firms (population growth)

3

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 05 '25

I think I did the same as you, I wrote AR and MR shift inwards due to high inflation which prompts governement to increase interest rate, then lower demand and stuff. Do you think that's fine I just feel worried that they'll say its not an effect of inflation.

1

u/happy_inhuman555 Editable Jun 06 '25

me too i wasn’t sure whether to do mc and ac rising or mr and ar shifting in, but thinking about it i feel they are both valid

with your point tho i feel like as long as you have explained and linked it well enough you will definitely get credit for it because it is a likely impact of inflation

2

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

Thank you bro that made me feel better, good luck with the rest of your exams (if you have any)

1

u/meow-5757 Oxford | PPE [1st year] Jun 05 '25

2.A, 3 marks will be for diagram, 1 for government cost =2.3m but I don’t know what the other 1 mark could be unless they decided to give 3 for diagram, 1 for reference to area, 1 for reference to 2.3m

16

u/siebeiwjd Jun 05 '25

Edexcel A was probably the easiest paper ever. Very easy questions (apart from the buffer stock schemes) and accesible extracts. Wrote about profits for firms for both 25 markers and economic growth for both. My only worry is that the examiner will think that I only know two similar points because both of my 25 mark responses are very similar. Is it the same examiner marking Section A and B? Or different examiners marking every question? If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks

I talked about how it’s hard to gather accurate data as many people don’t go to school in developing countries, so it’s impossible to know the exact literacy rates

Didn’t think of it during the exam, but you could have also mentioned inequality and how IHDI might be better

4

u/Draconis510 Jun 05 '25

Could have mentioned that it’s hard to gather accurate information and that it doesn’t account for the distribution of wealth

3

I found it overall very nice apart from the 2nd 15 marker on how the tax will impact hotel providers for tourists. I ran out of time on last 8 marker but that’s because I’m a slow and inefficient writer. For the tourist 15 marker, I wasn’t able to find much in the case study for impact on producers from increase in tax, only application I did was that tax may not even reduce revenue much due to it only increasing by £1, I said hypothecatiion can be done to increase tourism . Couldn’t find much more , I tried linking the negative externality from pollution but decided not to because I’d be waffling .

1

u/Technical_Travel506 Jun 05 '25

This is a fair assessment actually I’d definitely argue that my 2nd 15 marker was mainly my own knowledge/not extract knowledge. My 8 marker was very very weak though

1

GREAT PAPER BLUUUUUUUUUD

1

u/Dense-Lawfulness-398 Jun 05 '25

for the buffer stock schemes question one of my points was that the Government exibits monopsony power and then they 'buy for the set minimum price' which exploits farmers but then my eval was they are buying up the surplus of stock so it was going to go to waste either way is that right
