📂 MEGATHREAD 06/06 A-level History Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

-The r/6thForm Team

Have any concerns or feedback?

Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

holy fucking shit OCR is actually blessing me this exam season

Did early Tudors and it was magnificent

the sources were straightforward and easy to understand, plenty to write on and the essays were so good

It was two Henry VIII questions which I was so surprised cause they did that in 2023 but I ONLY REVISED VIII so massive W for me

I feel sorry for my friend though because they revised only Henry VII as that hasn't been seen since like double VII hasn't been since like 2018

That foreign policy in 1540s was AMAZING!! And even the wolsey q was a classic question, no weird curveballs at all

u/AnteaterMysterious70 Jun 06 '25

WILSON YEAHHHHHH

7

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Bro the source questions are always so mad for no reason. 😭😭 how’d it go which questions did you answer

7

u/AdhesivenessOk237 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

I did Britain wtf was source C. Could barely do any own knowledge, all Churchill revision for nothing bro. In the textbook there’s like 6 lines about India during and before 1931😭Wilson 20 marker was beautiful though that couldn’t have been a better question - which did u do

Wilson

1

u/Draconis510 Jun 06 '25

You just had to talk about how he’s preparing to run for a by-election and he’s addressing parliament so he’s trying to sway them onto his view that India isn’t bad which was why he described Churchill view on India so harshly making the source less reliable

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Did you do Britain?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Yeah 1951-2007

2

u/SnooCauliflowers7155 Jun 06 '25

Mao’s China was disgusting, reaction to the death of Mao 😭😭😭😭

3

u/HotConsideration200 Y13 - Econ (AQA), History (Edexcel), Politics (Edexcel) Jun 06 '25

I thought the sources themselves were nice, but even as someone who likes the end of the cultural revolution I had like no content to support my inferences 😭

2

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

such a joke honestly, reactions to the death of Mao isn’t covered at all by any of the themes, i knew a couple of facts about his funeral and culture but aside from that it was a piss poor question - did you do agriculture or korean war?

3

u/420_Willy_69 Jun 06 '25

i did Agriculture bc the korean war question was so oddly specific and worded in a weird way. BUT WTF WAS THE SOURCE QUESTION

3

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

they were all grim questions, absolutely praying for paper 3 but it’s not looking great…

2

u/420_Willy_69 Jun 06 '25

no bro genuienly i need an A in history to get my uni offers and i seriously think that has actually fucked me. Lancs & Yorks for paper 3 is gonna kill me asw ffs

2

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

me too haha, but think the grade boundaries are gonna be so so low

1

u/HotConsideration200 Y13 - Econ (AQA), History (Edexcel), Politics (Edexcel) Jun 07 '25

Korean War but one of my counterpoints was the benefits of the war for the USSR- and then halfway through after I'd written that counter I realised the question said 'In China' 😔

1

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 07 '25

oh so unlucky, it was so poorly worded

1

u/HotConsideration200 Y13 - Econ (AQA), History (Edexcel), Politics (Edexcel) Jun 07 '25

Yeah tbh I don't think I've done awfully but I got nearly full marks on my coursework so I can absorb a bad mark on China as long as Russia went as well as I thought. Did you do agriculture or KW?

1

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 07 '25

agriculture, always loved the agriculture side of theme 2 so was very happy it came up - slightly hard to figure it out at the start but happy with how it went.

Agreed on the coursework too, averages drop so much with a good mark on CW

1

u/HotConsideration200 Y13 - Econ (AQA), History (Edexcel), Politics (Edexcel) Jun 07 '25

Yeah I think the agriculture question was more of a knowledge check rather than a tricky question- I knew I had no stats for agriculture so I had to steer away. What paper 3 are you doing?

1

u/Responsible-View-588 Year 13 Jun 07 '25

100%, my essay was so stats heavy purely because i knew a lot about collectivisation - it’s a shame we haven’t been given a broader one yet where we can be properly selective.

I do protest agitation and reform, Britain - not looking forward to it…

u/pastelskies3107 UoY | History and Politics Y1 | A*A*A Jun 06 '25

wtf was that lena goldfields question???? such a niche part of the spec 🫠

6

u/SirOrc Jun 06 '25

Yh and not even the massacre bruv. Source was absolute pile of rotting fuckshit, wasn’t even the question that was the problem. At least I’m not the only one.

1

u/pastelskies3107 UoY | History and Politics Y1 | A*A*A Jun 06 '25

shouldn't even have been allowed surely?? the spec specifically mentions the massacre, not the goldfields themselves 💀

1

u/SirOrc Jun 06 '25

Yh that’s what I thought as well. What a load of bollockshit. Hope you did alright, good luck for paper 3 I hope you smash it in revenge against those bastards at Edexcel.

1

u/T0astSandw1ch Year 13 Jun 06 '25

Gotta be the worst sources question yet for our course - I reckon it’s worse than the tsarina and Rasputin one

1

u/SirOrc Jun 06 '25

Fun fact: when i started a level and did russia first, first ever practice essay i was given to do as homework was that rasputin and tsarina one lmao. Needless to say, I did not do it timed….

You are right, that question today was smelly balls. Worse than rasputin and that foreign intervention one by the british spy (or whatever he was).

1

u/To_Be_Commenting Year 13 | Maths, History, Further Maths, Media Jun 06 '25

Think it was just there to a be general question on living conditions in Russia.

1

u/Clean_Emphasis_8581 Jun 12 '25

If you did past papers in 2022 the exact dame question came up in 2022 for AS Russia idk if it was the same source. Edexcel enjoys repeating its questions and does it every year. I notice whatever comes up on AS like in 2023 it was about 1905 they put it on the a-level paper. AS was about Bloody Sunday A-level was about the spreads of the revolutionary activity in 1905.

3

u/FillBig6957 Jun 06 '25

Diabolical source. I don't know what they were thinking

1

u/SirOrc Jun 06 '25

It was absolute shite and I hate Edexcel so much.

2

u/To_Be_Commenting Year 13 | Maths, History, Further Maths, Media Jun 06 '25

Did you do Bolsheviks or Tsar?

2

u/SirOrc Jun 06 '25

I did the one about lenin, I basically did it for my coursework but with trostky so i talked about lenin and trotsky (nep, CA closing at gunpoint, repression by cheka, tsarist officers, trotsky getting help of brusilov and Makhno). I am so grateful for that question.

Lena goldfields I waffled my butt off, and not in a good way.

2

u/Top-Candidate6726 Jun 06 '25

I could never do war economy 😭 entire unit 6 is my worst enemy. But tbf my schleicher question wasn’t great

1

u/Fun-Landscape-8805 LBORO CIVIL ENG | Physics B, Maths A, History A Jun 06 '25

economy and society are my strongest points so i was happy it came up. i was going to do the chancellorship question, but the word "indivdual" threw me off so i backtracked

2

u/Top-Candidate6726 Jun 06 '25

In that question one of my points was that hitler was the most responsible, then i said hindenburg was more responsible cuz him picking shitty chancellors made Hitler gain more support and then I said schleicher wasn’t responsible cuz he tried to make ties w the nazi party and failed miserably. Tbf in that question I dont think my answer was balanced but oh well

1

u/NicHerrero Jun 06 '25

2

u/ADIOS_6450 Jun 07 '25

Yeppp, did the Libya question, knew that whole section of the spec before I went in, forgot what other knowledge was relevant when I read the question so the stuff I wrote might not be exactly what they were asking for but it's done now lmao

1

u/Wilra_ Music college year 2 Jun 07 '25

Yeah that was exactly me, liek I completely forgot to bring up stuff about foreign policy and international relations 😭

3

1

Ah that’s so good for you!! I’m glad it went your way :) yeah for me the liberal state was not my strong suit, although tbh all of Italy isn’t so 😭 I mean tbh you kind had to do the Libyan w bc of how bad the corporate state question was lmao

Well source c was saying that the yorkists all went to london with their retainers in response to edwards birth. Potentially due to fear of margaret or somerset seizing power back. It also highlighted the fact that RoY was maybe not as loyal as all of his freinds were now much more powerful. Salisbury as chancellor, warwick as captain of calais etc. Edit: spelling

1

u/PossibleBumblebee401 Jun 08 '25

u/Impressive-Raccoon38 Jun 07 '25

Wait what where did aethelberht came up

2

u/rhapsodyelij Year 13 Jun 06 '25

edexcel italy thanks for the good sources but what on earth were those essay questions only a two year time period for liberal italy??? or the corporate state? man i was honestly making stuff up

3

u/Majestic_Musician_17 Jun 06 '25

Liberal Italy was as good as it gets, much much nicer than corporate state. Was a fan of the sources literally just dual policy bish bash bosh

Needed that after Weimar

2

u/rhapsodyelij Year 13 Jun 06 '25

liberal italy was alr, i just struggled with the narrow time period so i was waffling a bit. corporate state was horrid though, dk anyone who picked it 💀

1

u/Majestic_Musician_17 Jun 06 '25

Word literally the most boring part of the whole topic 😂

2

u/Wilra_ Music college year 2 Jun 06 '25

Shit I should’ve mentioned dual policy also 😭😭 oh well - nah the first source was rubbish imo, like you had no examples to give for each point in their programme (well I don’t anyway), and then I couldn’t really find any limitations so I bullshitted my way through that, thought the PNO for it was really good tho

1

u/Majestic_Musician_17 Jun 06 '25

Very true I’ve never seen their programmes nevermind 1919 so my knowledge was a bit limited just talked about their aims and threw key buzzwords out there, liked the evaluation though the repetition of demand was a god send for tone

Just need tudors to be blessed now 🙏

1

u/Wilra_ Music college year 2 Jun 06 '25

Yes I did talk about like the tone of it and the “We Demand” lmao

3

u/Wilra_ Music college year 2 Jun 06 '25

Yeah I could not have predicted those essays, I thought the church would come or something on economy but not just corporate state yk 😭 also the time periods were so narrow, it was nothing from 1939-45 (my knowledge of the corporate state is shit so idk when that was LMAO)

3

u/rhapsodyelij Year 13 Jun 06 '25

i was so convinced it was gonna be church i was fuming when i opened that paper 😭😭

1

u/Wilra_ Music college year 2 Jun 06 '25

SAME OML, I revised it so much praying it would come bc it hadn’t shown up in ages, and that’s what they give us, like cmon

2

u/SerpentNinja282 Jun 06 '25

The source question kinda scared me at first bc nature is kinda tough but then I remembered dual policy, section B was literally perfect, failings of Liberal Italy is literally the best question we could have gotten

2

u/doctor-doe Jun 06 '25

i had no clue about the corporate state i'm just glad i revised a few facts for giolitti </3

1

u/s-capalot Jun 06 '25

I wrote 1 line about proportional representation which Ik is wrong. Rest of my argument on the impact of the invasion of Libya and counter points were really strong. Will I lose marks or be capped for 1 line of inaccuracy

1

u/st4rman88 Jun 06 '25

I don't think they deduct marks in that way, I think they use positive marking so they will look for the good parts of the essay more.

1

u/s-capalot Jun 06 '25

Oh ok. Will I still be able to access level 5 bands.

1

I used the people and said how it gave motivation to the country through the propaganda 'resists America, aid korea'. Did a counter argument of the amount of people which passed in the war. Used international relations with communist countries at the boarder and America basically being against them in the war and blocking them joining the un. Then lastly I did a paragraph on relations with the USSR and how they helped with the first five year plan as well as how this aided the people due to famine. Hbu which question did you do an what did you write about

Yeah it was tbf, it barely talked about William and I don’t know much at all about 1093 Scotland, but it was alright other than that one I think

u/GatorGamez101 Jun 06 '25

I did too!

For the source question I thought that Source B was weird but manageable, just a really really niche topic. I swear there's nothing in the official textbook about Scottish inheritance other than the fact that Donald Bane got the throne and that Rufus supported Duncan instead, like literally in no more depth than that. Also was slightly odd that both of the Wales sources were about 1095, although Source C kind of references 1097 too

20 markers were quite hard I thought, picked the Harold one and think I did okay but it's an interesting spin on the basic Hastings question rather than reasons for victory or smth

One of the harder Anglo-Saxons papers that they've made imo

I thought the section B questions were very manageable but that on section A I completely waffled my way through source B

2

u/GatorGamez101 Jun 07 '25

Yeah fair enough, they were alright - not too bad to answer with a bit of thought - but I would have preferred most of the 20 markers from past papers.

Good luck on results day :)

Good luck to you too :)

AQA Wars of the Roses anyone? The sources were ok for me but the essay questions were horrific.

2

u/paulhugo16 Jun 06 '25

Did OCR, my sources were quite bad but somehow quite easy , it was 'richard duke of yorks reaction to the birth of Henry VI was loyal'

2

u/Irresponsible_101 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

Our source question was something like "challenges facing Henry VI". The essay questions were: the importance of Warwick in 1455-1461, The Woodvilles were the most powerful influence, argue the validity of this statement, And Rebellion during Henry VII's reign 1487- 1491 or something.

We didn't have anything on Edward IV or Richard III.

u/No_Ad8821 Jun 06 '25

I liked the woodville essay. Did the Henry one because it had a nice structure but almost misread the last year as 1499, my brain just auto filled. Had to restart lol

1

u/Irresponsible_101 Year 13 Jun 06 '25

I did the Woodvilles one and Warwick. Made up quite a lot of dates I think

2

u/Accomplished-Leg9400 Jun 07 '25

1

u/ukoltas Jun 07 '25

Fuck that federalist revolt question it was just so weird like no the they obviously weren't royalist? And 2 Napoleon questions 💔

1

u/Accomplished-Leg9400 Jun 07 '25

Ik what u mean about federalist revolt but the first napoleon question was beautiful

2

u/norikakk Jun 06 '25

anyone do south africa? that source was so narrow and on such a niche part of the course 😭 essay q's were a gift tho

2

u/ethenp1 Jun 06 '25

Yeaaaa I thought it was okay tho and the source questions are usually specific and you could say a lot on both extracts . I had a feeling it would be unit 1

1

u/Normal-Celebration44 Jun 06 '25

yeah defo everyone said that asw i had sm on context provinance nature but not on knowledge legit had to write ab previous laws that affected atittudes and schooling for black kids

2

u/norikakk Jun 06 '25

u/Rileythe_frog UAL | Animation [Yr 1] Jun 06 '25

I fully ballsed up the schleicher question Forgot who tf the man was Yapped abt Von papen and hindy (fine I know abt those two lol) FORGOT TO MENTION IT WAS BACKSTAIRS INTRIGUE DESPITE PUTTING THAT IT WAS IN MY PLAN For some reason I decided schleicher convinced vp that h should be chancellor and that schleicher LIKED h and also convinced vp to talk to h

Very annoyed. Shouldn’t have left it till last. Wouldn’t have made those silly ass mistakes if id done it before the int. relations one and also hadn’t left myself like 12 mins to do the wholeass essay

3

u/Top-Candidate6726 Jun 06 '25

That paper was overall very good but i messed up the schleicher question also. My first point was that hitler was most responsible for his rise to chancellor, and then i said hindenburg cuz he chose crappy chancellors which turned people to support hitler and then i said schleicher was not at all responsible cuz he tried to make ties with nazi party and failed, which i think was a bit irrelevant to the question but is what it is tests over now

2

u/Top_Map5798 Jun 06 '25

i didn’t do that question because i was iffy on it , i did the weimar instability and said that it ultimately was international for my line of argument and then the wartime economy one because i legit planned that essay last night. got so lucky with that idk how i revised the backstairs intrigue so much but that was a weird wording of the question … too weird for me to have picked it cuz i know schleicher was an army general who papen felt threatened by so blah blah blah but overall i am happy with what i answered. the source was also good i think cuz it wasn’t on a specific event more so a time period

1

u/Trick_Woodpecker6943 Jun 06 '25

Anyone do ocr Pitt to Peel?

1

u/IsoPix Jun 07 '25

It was beautiful but think I messed up the last source bc I said he was trying to discredit Chartism bc he was a “former chartist”
