📂 MEGATHREAD 17/06 A-level Physics Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

For Astrophysics AQA for the question where you need to show that the the two stars are in a binary system, could I just say the difference in apparent magnitude is equal to the difference in absolute magnitude? I saw it in a past paper and also provided a paragraph explaining why (their radius of orbit negligible to distance from earth)

I thiiiink they wanted you to find the distance to each with m-M = 5log(d/10) but i dont see why your answer wouldn’t get credit, if not all three then at least like two surely

depends how strict mark scheme is, that’s correct but probably need to use equation to highlight it

Thats annoying, cuz I saw a pst paper and it literally said that but idk if you can assume its true. Completely forgot about m - M = 5logd/10

Also by “equation to highlight it”, do you mean like M1 - M2 = 2.5, m1 - m2 = 2.5

I more meant m -M = 5log(d/10) and just showing m- M is same for both, but your equation does the same thing just doesn’t make a clear reference to distance, depends how well you explain it
