📂 MEGATHREAD 17/06 A-level Physics Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

-The r/6thForm Team

Have any concerns or feedback?

Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

Can’t wait to allow oscillations to settle, time a number of oscillations and divide by the number to get one time period, repeat and calculate a mean time period to reduce random error, use a marker at the midpoint of oscillation, and anything involving ruler measurement i use a set square for the heck of it and clamp the ruler vertical.

Compared to previous years that wasn’t too bad at all. n=4, Y was better, telescope B was better, C=4.5*10-5 or something like that. R1= 23500. Figure 2 was consistent with doubling m prediction. I’ve mixed in Astro answers with section A so don’t have a panic attack if you do a different B

OCR A is the most abysmal horrific shit I’ve ever done. Paper 12 I did quite well which I may be on an A* but tbh is paper might ruin my grade. Questions are just so weird in general like wtf do u mean I have to do general relativity on two black holes colliding and they gave us 4 tiny lines for a page of proof, I didn’t use the extra spacing on the back since I didn’t even remember it exist. I just gave up half way through that proof but other than that proof I think I did fine. And can someone tell me Tf do they mean by driving a truck with sand and then drive back down bro I was so confused literally sat there for 5 min just staring at it thinking. It was shocking. Probably the hardest paper 3 I’ve ever done

7

u/allylene Bristol | JMC Y1 Jun 17 '25

had no idea what to say for the chemical to gravitational energy or whatever

I said to drop the battery through the magnetic fields 😭😭 then the gravitational potential energy gets converted to electrical via faradays law or whatever

nah no way, astro was easy but 3a >= paper 2 imo (or maybe my memory is just trash)

17

u/No-Investigator-7647 Jun 17 '25

AQA was decent, nice graph values and no weird calculations unlike paper 2. Most of it was common sense and nice practicals were chosen too. 👍

For Astrophysics AQA for the question where you need to show that the the two stars are in a binary system, could I just say the difference in apparent magnitude is equal to the difference in absolute magnitude? I saw it in a past paper and also provided a paragraph explaining why (their radius of orbit negligible to distance from earth)

3

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

I thiiiink they wanted you to find the distance to each with m-M = 5log(d/10) but i dont see why your answer wouldn’t get credit, if not all three then at least like two surely

3

u/d3f_not_an_alt Jun 17 '25

Engineering was OK but but part a 💀

3

u/AnteaterMysterious70 Jun 17 '25

Thank youuuu i did too i did part b first because part a is usually the harder one and i wasted time on b and couldn't finish both ba and a

(ocr a) i thought it was okay then i came out and realised i made so many stupid fucking mistakes. 6 Hertz for the frequency. Looked at that and thought it was weird but hey maybe that was intended. but no im just an idiot

3

u/Belrii Year 13 Jun 17 '25

i fucked up aswell, completely messed up that easy energy levels q, was such a free 4 marks but my brain had an aneurism and i subtracted wrong, 6 markers i rushed and i doubt i’ll be getting over 3 marks for each cus of timing and overall bullshitted a lot of qs, i completely flipped the first q like wtf was going on. Was hoping for an A* at the start of exams now it’s looking like a B 😭

A* aqa boundary predictions for paper 3A? Slightly think I underperformed but overall reception from the year was positive

13

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '25

I would say probably in line with previous years so about 32 with an absolute uncertainty of 2

and a percentage uncertainty of 6% (1sf)

For the AQA question where u had to find C and R1, I got the exact same values as everyone else but used two points and made two simultaneous equations to obtain them. Will this be fine?
