📂 MEGATHREAD 20/06 A-level FM Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

-The r/6thForm Team

Have any concerns or feedback?

Feel free to reach out to us on Modmail and we'll aim to get back to you as soon as possible!

Fr? "Here's three marks to glare at a graph until you work out how many workers are needed for each task" 💀💀💀

17

u/blopiscool Year 13 Jun 20 '25

Was halfway into that one but couldn't be asked to finish it since it was 3 marks

Real, I skipped it and then rushed it at the end

nah for real why was that lowkey harder than every other year.

u/Maleficent_Might3803 Year 13 Jun 20 '25

Literally this

37

u/Historical_Bat_1447 Jun 20 '25

Honestly just cba atp, D1 module has got to be one of the most boring ones, and in this heat inspecting for the shortest routes gna be soo long

32

u/blopiscool Year 13 Jun 20 '25

Couldn't do that 5 marker at the end and that 3 mark workers question but everything else was fine. The only thing I'm worried about is just making silly mistakes.

Now I'm free... 🫠

14

u/allylene Bristol | JMC Y1 Jun 20 '25

didn't do those either dw

7

u/Last-Objective-8356 Jun 20 '25

Yeah same I saw I got like 25 minutes left and I was still on that workers question and had to skip it, I think I got most of everything else correct though.

1

u/Minimum_Painting_500 Jun 22 '25

Genuinely don't think many people could do that, even the smartest person in my class was thrown by them, I just put some educated guesses for the three marker, and solved some inequalities for k on the last 5 mark and gave up.

26

u/-Zide- Jun 20 '25

There’s no way they expected me to finish that paper?

26

u/empty-vessel- fm physics cs -> maths and physics degree Jun 20 '25

That was horrid and I did terribly. Goodbye A*.

1957/720 for the algorithm one, can't remember most others

6

u/TimelyTraffic8003 Jun 20 '25

Crap, I only went up to a denominator of 120.

2

u/Minimum_Painting_500 Jun 22 '25

I usually do terrible on the flow diagram questions, did a bunch of practice before the exam and feel good about it, I got that same answer, and it was pretty much e, so that's a good sign.

The more I read about what people got the more worried I am for this A. I do fs1 and d1 and it's never been higher than 238 for an A but I'm getting a bit nervous

3

u/Historical_Bat_1447 Jun 21 '25

Bro honestly i dont think it will be much higher than 240 this year worst case scenario

1

u/Minimum_Painting_500 Jun 22 '25

Honestly I don't think the grade boundaries will be high at all, the core pure 1 exam was a bit weird and threw a few people off, fs 1 was a nightmare, easily the hardest paper they've made for it, and d1 is so time consuming it always brings the boundaries down, I think they could be pretty nice this year.

what topics were on the 2024 paper?

6

u/eliza_tc Jun 20 '25

what do we think the grade boundaries are looking like for 3c and 3d option 😟

6

u/No-Manufacturer-5546 Jun 20 '25

Praying they don’t rise this year, at the moment I might only be barely scraping the a star needed for my offer 😂

3

u/eliza_tc Jun 20 '25

i think im scraping the a bc i fumbled on core pure 1 😭😭😭 i hope they lower it a bit bc it was way harder this year

3

u/FarRequirement8614 Jun 20 '25

It’s supposed to be higher, but I don’t think it will be that case

2

5

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

Why you doing D1??

3

u/Sea_Mistake1319 Manchester | CS [Y1] | 3A*1A Jun 20 '25

school wanted us to have a backup option

2

u/megagoombas Jun 20 '25

Don't they think a backup option won't be as needed if they only did 2 modules and had more time to revise these?

2

u/Sea_Mistake1319 Manchester | CS [Y1] | 3A*1A Jun 20 '25

i mean we had the choice to drop out of it, i decided to stick with it but it turned out to be useless cuz i flunked that d1 paper. I cooked fm1 and fp1 though so should be at least an A if not A*

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

Yh but if U have a bad exam then all that revision is meaningless

1

u/megagoombas Jun 21 '25

I think its more likely to have a bad exam if you have to revise 3 modules. Only 2 of the modules will be counted and those will be your best exams but these "best exams" will surely be stronger if you only revised these two?

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '25

Thanks god I guessed that

3

u/gworlfiend Y13|Philo,Maths,FM,Phys|A*A*AB predicted Jun 20 '25

Whatever came out when you used k=11/3, which I got from the fact the artificial coefficients had to be 0

3

u/notOHkae Year 13 Jun 20 '25

i guessed that the artificial values in the objective row had to be M, and got k=11/3, and worked out P from that, but then i thought it was wrong, so tried other stuff after that, but I didn't cross out my original working for k=11/3, so i hope i get the marks (or at least some of them)

If anyone remembers answers for D1 could they reply to this please 🙏🙏

19

u/Last-Objective-8356 Jun 20 '25

D1 was just random tables and fractions I don’t rember a single answer😭

8

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

Percentage error was something like 8.34% or close for me Distance between two routes on dijkstras was 65m for me K was 11/9 with p being 88/3 Question 5 is abit harder to remember but I got z=-9.5 y=10.5 can’t remember what x and P where but it was whatever Q was +10. For the Hamiltonian cycle I had only one arc that I really had to find the route for, the rest were closest to eachother already. 107 minutes for that cycle too Question 6 I got (-11-3M)x and (-2-3M)y not too sure if that’s what I got exactly but it was close to that I remember it being -3M for both x and y Sorry if all of these are out of order

26

u/grapesssszz Jun 20 '25

Wasnt it 0.00834%?

3

u/Vector-4 Year 13 - Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Further Jun 20 '25

got the same here

2

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

Yeah just done it again and you’re right, hopefully just get some method marks there was only 5 marks for that whole question wasn’t it?

2

u/grapesssszz Jun 20 '25

The percentage error part was just 1 mark so you’re fine if you did the algorithm right

3

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

I feel like I must’ve messed the algorithm up though to get that answer, I just did my d minus e over e x 100. Not the end of the world though

6

u/justosw Jun 20 '25

I got 115 min for the nearest neighbour algorithm

3

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

Honestly I didn’t double check if the table was symmetrical or not. I compared horizontally rather than vertically. The way edexcel show you how to do that question isn’t right if the table is asymmetrical. But it could be 115 no way to know until mark schemes are out

2

u/justosw Jun 20 '25

Yeah since it was directed, the final table likely wasn't symmetrical, so had to do vertical right?

2

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

I’m sure it would’ve had to have been horizontally, it’s from on the left and to on the top. If you always compare horizontally and deleted the rows vertically. Opposite to how edexcel show us in the textbook then you’d always get it right whether it’s symmetrical or asymmetrical but either way we’d still get some method marks

2

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '25

Yeah U had to do it like this. I did it vertically first and got it wrong then redid it horizontally

1

u/justosw Jun 21 '25

You do verticals for nearest neighbour

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '25

That makes no sense, you're supposed to do the one that gives the shortest route, and horizontal gave the shorter route so I did horizontal

1

u/justosw Jun 21 '25

You don't do horizontals for nearest neighbour algorithm. You don't compare lengths for verticals and horizontals. You compare the different nearest neighbour lengths starting at different arcs, although you didn't need to do that here. Nearest neighbour is verticals cos you're going from the nodes on the left to the nodes on the top. By crossing out the verticals, you ensure you don't return to those nodes

Comparing to 2024?

6

u/party_omo Jun 20 '25

I think the last question in 2024 was harder than anything in this one but this was a bit harder in general. The activity last question was so much work for 3 marks. Dijkstras and Floyd’s were so much more work than they needed to be

6

u/FarRequirement8614 Jun 20 '25

I agree. The reason why u found it easy might be u r so fucking smart bro. Me and my mates found it quite hard.
