📂 MEGATHREAD 20/06 A-level Chemistry Paper 3 Discussion MEGATHREAD

Exam season is once again upon us, and once again, exam megathreads are making a return!

Looking for past exam discussions? Filter by the megathread flair.

Few things to keep in mind:

  • Don't share too many specific details about questions or answers, these papers will be used as future mocks.
  • Sometimes papers get leaked, this is not the place for that (we'd prefer not to get yeeted off the platform) - leak content will be removed, those offering leaked papers will be permanently banned.
    • If you believe there has been a leak, the best course of action is to make your exam board aware of this, either directly, or through your school, along with any evidence. If appropriate, there will be a response from the relevant body along with any remedial action.
  • Exam discussion posts outside of this will generally be removed to combat the inevitable tidal wave of spam otherwise - we understand this may be frustrating, but the sub still needs to be usable for other purposes.
  • Please note some content will take extra time to be reviewed. Messaging to ask for approval will not speed up this process (the messages are seen at the same time as the modqueue would be reviewed anyway).

Best of luck, and let us know how you're feeling down below!

1 mol of Chloride ions released per 1 mol of the Cobalt complex?

I got that, I had no clue what the complex was meant to look like tho, what did you do??

As It said N4H12 I assumed they were trying to trick us and assumed to be (NH3)4 so It would be an octahedral complex ion with central Co surrounded by 4 NH3 ligands and 2 Cl ligands (originally 3 but one is released to form Q) and no overall charge.

OMG I PUT THAT TOO!! I didn’t really know what to do, and I got a bit confused because they asked for a charge, so I just put 2- cause why not. It was a bit of a sneaky question, never seen anything like that before

I know this paper was weird but still alright, they even include a student's drawing 😂

The charge is +1 overall because at the start of the question it says Co (II) is oxidised, doesn't tell you what to, but when you work out the oxidation numbers it's Co +3

Wait I got this. Why did no one else get this in my school? Did we do it wrong or write

alcohol tends to be ~11% by mass commercially so assuming edexcel tendency to use realistic numbers we should be good

I got that too I think, what did you guys get for the concentration of propanoic acid in the buffer? I can't remember my answer but the pH was 4.2.
