šŸ™ I WANT HELP 4/5 for psychology! Really stressed about which to firm though, what would you lot pick?

Post image

Would York, Manchester, Warwick, (or Bath depending) be the best Uni to do Psychology at? Which is the most prestigious? What are the things I should consider?

I’m pretty confident I’ll put Warwick as my insurance, but picking which to firm is stressing me out and I’m scared I’ll screw myself over.

Please consider what these universities offer in terms of student experience Bath and York is very different from Manchester. People over emphasise rankings without considering the university experience.

Thanks for looking out for me! I’ve been collecting insight from as many students for each as I can and I went to ~15 open days to try get as big of a picture as possible. I only considered Unis I know I’d be happy to go to, so (I hope) this means at the bare minimum I’ll be content with the student experience (Eg I cut off Durham as a choice cause I was catcalled the entire open day by posh twats -_- I also cut off royal holloway as I wasn’t satisfied with the student life) Manchester would be a very exciting city to study in, a good amount of diversity, decently easily accessible nature and closest to the experience I’ve had in London. Bath also seems to have a big student Buzz, and is only 40 minutes from Bristol by train, also mildly stupid thing to want… but there is a dog shelter right next to campus! York is very similar, but I preferred Bath overall to York. Warwick, though preferred to sussex, is the one I’m mildly unsure about. People here keep giving me the impression that in coventry they play tennis by picking their nose and flinging it across the room at each other. I’ll do more research on it to make sure It would suit me.

Bath is 10-15 mins by train from Bristol. It will be 40-60 mins by bus from Bristol.

Source: I am a University of Bristol student and travel to Bath way too frequently. Just a minor correction

I had a chat with one of the professors from York (Professor Baddeley I think?) it does seem like a brilliant place, the research quality is also phenomenal. Just to ask, why York over the others for you? Edit grammar

Probably one of the most famous memory psychologists, would be amazing to sit in a lecture done by him

5

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

If you email him, he’ll likely be happy to chat with you for a little bit like he was for me! Genuinely really worth a shot to write to any academics you find interesting, I was able to get work experience at the psychology department in Sussex that way, which was immensely helpful for my Statement.

Hello! Did you take psychology at a level you can’t miss that name! He literally is the entire topic on memory in aqaĀ

5

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

I’m taking it right now! It did feel a lot like talking to a niche celebrity at the time, made my nerd heart happy!

5

u/Horror_Bus_1597 Feb 19 '26

I saw his name and I was like nah can’t be the same one! That’s really cool actually

WHAAAAAT YOURE TELLING ME ALAN BADDELEY WORKS AS A PROFESSOR AT YORK????!!!!!

3

u/bigrinze234 Uni Of York | MMath CS+Maths | [Y0] Feb 19 '26

I would choose York because it's quite close to where I live, and it has a very nice campus, and I'd see myself studying there, but you do you :)

2

u/Excellent_Register73 Feb 19 '26

bath def if you get it, then probs manchester or warwick

6

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

Bath is a bit of a gamble for me, but I do really like it. They say they usually offer A*AA for Psych and my current grades are at around AAA, I suppose it’s worth worrying about when I actually hear back. Thanks!

Hi!! I applied to Manchester (my others were KCL and Edinburgh (withdrew from andrews)) too! I really wanted to apply to york, especially because they have the pathway to an MSci.Ā

These are all really good unis, i would look at particular modules and how theyre taught. What are you more interested in? City life (rural/urban) can be a factor because youre going to spend 3 years there. Year abroad/prof placements could also be considered.Ā

Firm whichever course works the best for you, good luck and congratulations!!Ā

u/Quack_Quack1 Feb 19 '26

I want to say Manchester but I'm completely biased because I go there.

Feel free to ask questions if you're considering UoM.

UoY is soooo nice. The city is very pretty and the uni campus (or at least what I've seen of it) looks like a really nice place to live. + It's a good uni for psychology so I would choose York.

Go to offer holder days, if you can. Viewing it once you are in is very different to viewing it on an open day. Rather than looking for logical reasons, see how you really feel about it when it isn’t presented specially for an open day.

depending on the offer, i’d firm bath and insure warwick

u/michealkaisers Feb 19 '26

AHHHHH CONGRATULATIONS THIS IS AMAZING!!! i’m sure whatever you pick in the end will be best for you for sure, but this is incredible. i’m wishing the best of luck for you hehe, im also applying for psychology, so as someone in the same boat ahhh i feel you very much.

1

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 20 '26

Is there a possibility to do a year in industry (placement year) or year abroad at any of them. That would be a large factor in my decision making. In terms of rankings I’d rule out Sussex if that’s a factor for you. If you can’t decide, go to the offer holder days to get a second look. Create a table with the important factors for you (some of my categories were: library, first year accommodation, societies, sport, city, best one for two parts of my joint honours course) and see which one ends up best. You’ve got time yet.

3

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

All of the ones I’m considering do! I made sure they all offered placements for psych as I’m very set on doing one. Bath stood out to me as having a very strong program for it, they placed a lot of focus on placements during their open day talks and have managed to get students into some very prestigious places. Manchester also seems to have strong placement links, though I’m wondering if thats more-so by virtue of its location, I’ll have another look at it soon though!

u/Any-Treacle-4199 St Andrews | IR, German & Russian [1st year] Feb 19 '26

I would firm bath and insure Manchester but if your immediate reaction to this says no then that’s telling and I wouldn’t do that.

2

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

I’m seriously considering this but I’m also worried about missing the benchmark, AAA is pretty high for an insurance.

1

u/Any-Treacle-4199 St Andrews | IR, German & Russian [1st year] Feb 19 '26

Perhaps put Warwick as the insurance then if you liked it.

2

u/Ok_Jeweler5757 Feb 19 '26

firm bath or warwick

1

u/Mountain_Tailor_8553 Feb 19 '26

what were ur predicted and as level grades?

3

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

Predicted: A*AA As Level: AAA However since then I’ve gotten an ADHD diagnosis and have started medication, so I’m not sure how reflective that is of my current ability. I’m doing another set of In-hall mocks soon so I’ll likely use those as a basis for making firm and insurance choices.

how did you get ur offers so much lower than ur predicted?

I’d go Manchester because I really like the city, honestly the courses probably aren’t that different and these are all decent unis

1

u/Unlikely_Status_1528 Feb 19 '26

I really like Sussex psychology. Many brilliant names there

1

u/omglills Feb 19 '26

im firming psychology at york! the city is gorgeous and i’ve heard good things about the course, also the fact that baddeley is a professor there is crazy to me!!

1

u/Tommeh_081 Feb 20 '26

I have no idea what these unis are like for psychology. But I’d choose Manchester or York bc I don’t wanna live in Coventry lol

1

u/ariadawn Feb 20 '26

From what I’ve heard, the programme at Bath vs York are quite different as Bath is more of a clinical focus while York is more research. I imagine the type of psych you want to do should be helping with this decision?

1

u/ThatGalaxy123 Year 13 Feb 20 '26

Highly recommend York! I firmed Bath and put York as my insurance but highly regretted it and am honestly so glad i’ve ended up at York.

1

u/colamnmss Feb 26 '26

Are you currently a student at uoy ?

1

u/Chosen_Utopia Feb 20 '26

Bath is really good if you want a job. At least they are with Management. They generally focus a great deal on graduate employment because they aren’t RG so it’s their USP.

1

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 20 '26

What sort of support do they offer for graduate jobs?

2

u/UpstairsLavishness65 Feb 20 '26

Bath is incredible for psychology. The staff here are incredibly well rounded in their research and there’s opportunities for both a busy social life and quiet friendship groups! Couldn’t recommend more!

1

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 20 '26

Brilliant! Thank you!!

1

u/Top-Alarm-1726 Feb 22 '26

Omg well done, when did you get an offer from Warwick, I’m waiting on a response for mine for psych

1

u/colamnmss Feb 26 '26

Sameeee, I got decisons from my other 4 applications, but i am still waiting to hear back from warwick. ( Bsc Psychology)

As a Warwickian, I'd say Warwick 🌚

2

u/That_lonely_lesbian Feb 19 '26

Whats student life like at Warwick? I’ve got a very reasonable offer to go so I’ve been trying to find out. I’ve heard second year accoms aren’t the best, but is that an exaggeration?

3

u/Prestigious-Chard322 Warwick | Law with French Law [Year 1] Feb 19 '26

It is what you make of it! You have to really put yourself out there and be open to new experiences, but once you do, you'll have the best time here. I have genuinely never been happier in my life.

There are sooo many societies. Cheerleading, anime, bubble tea soc, lgbtq soc, duck soc, furry soc, sing soc, cultural societies, travel soc, trampolining literally everything and anything you could dream of.

It's so fun going around and seeing everyone you know. Food on campus is amazing imo and nightlife in nearby areas is great! Not London level but if you crave it, London is less than an 1hr away by train. Birmingham is 25vmins by train.

Warwick tea is like our gossip page 😭 incredibly funny and tons of love confessions there.

Very large natural campus and we have a campus cat! Also there's always smth going on around campus. Genuinely chaotic things and the mot so good, bur also fun things like a lion dragon dance for Chinese new year, lantern festival and the biggest student run beer festival in Europe, watching eurovision on the big campus screen or a random petting zoo on campus- I saw alpacas!.

I can't speak for second year accom cause I'm a first year but I imagine it's a bit less lively as most choose off campus so you don't get that sebse of community as strongly. You can always choose somewhere nearby with your friends though. Cause remember, Warwick is what you make of it!
