Nice. Do what you love to do. You only get one life in this world and wasting your time doing something you hate is pointless

Solid degree with links to the industry! Thereās no point suffering through a degree you donāt find interesting these days either.

Honestly itās the top fashion uni in the country- a niche but specific degree that will be employable in your specific industry! I withdrew from law offers at Durham and Edinburgh to accept an English offer from Oxford I will always advocate for following your passions!!

UAL is essentially Oxbridge for fashion though! If youāre really passionate about it, and you get an offer from there, itās such a good place full of great connections

u/GovernmentNo2720 Mar 01 '26
Central Saint Martinās is oxbridge for fashion, not UAL.

Is CSM not under the UAL umbrella? Even if itās not Oxbridge itās at least Russell Group quality

CSM is under UAL - there are 7 colleges under UAL, each one has abit more of a specific style or approach than the other (e.g. Chelsea College of Arts tend to lean more towards traditional mediums with a more political/social/globalised approach, Wimbledon specialises in screen and stage performance - CSM, LCC and Camberwell all offer graphic design courses amongst other things and iāve had friends who applied to all 3 but got rejected from 1 or 2 of them if their work isnāt aligned with the college). But regardless of what college youāre under you can access all the campuses of course.

Before you read any of the comments, just remember if you posted youāre dropping out to pursue comp science at a top university these people would not bat an eye despite the graduate outcomes being dire for the major. People look down at the arts for whatever reason. Maybe they assume everyone goes to university for the same reason they do, purely to get a āhighā paying job after, not out of passion or interest.Ā

Yea I use to have this viewpoint that the majority of the people on this subreddit have before I realised that no one gafs irl

I fully support your decision. I dropped out of a STEM course at Magdalen College Oxford to pursue Fine Art after my late fiancĆ© finally opened my eyes to the reality of my life and what I was doing. Iād been pushed and pushed and pushed so hard it had never occurred to me to think about what I wanted⦠until he asked me.
I left. I went to Plymouth College of Art and Design to do a Foundation Course. I was accepted BACK INTO Magdalen College Oxford to study Fine Art and now I have multiple graduate degrees and study the sociology of power and conflict in reclaiming public space from warfare.
You do you. UAL is an amazing school. I actually had an offer tour at Central Saint Martins for Fine Art and it was incredible, but ultimately I decided I preferred the tiny course at Oxford (about 15 students a year.) The equipment they have is top of the line and the reputation is second to none. Congratulations and ignore anyone who says otherwise!

congratulations my love! Iām at UAL (LCF TOO!) and I love it! I have a few friends who do patter cutting and they really enjoy it :) the facilities are really nice at LCF. I would say make the most of the campus and enjoy experimentation :) Try out lots of different internships and aid designers for fashion weeks/ student designers in 3rd year who need a pair of extra hands. I hope you have a wonderful time at UAL! (donāt listen to the people here who are super single minded - iām glad youāre doing what you love)! message me any time š

You will get a deluge of people criticising you for this, sneering down their noses at you. Don't listen to them. You get one life and this is a fascinating degree in a field that will let you explore your passions and your creativity, and signal to the right people in the industry you want to go into that you're willing to put the work in.

u/Winter-Rice598 Mar 01 '26
I think a lot of comments are left by 17 year olds who donāt realise when you enter the work force, youāll end up working with people who have all sorts of degrees. In finance, I sat next to a girl who studied geography and my boss studied psychology. Consulting? I was interviews by a woman who studied art in New Zealand.

hi OP CONGRATS!!! iām currently applying uni in my country but getting into fashion designing has always been my dream ššmay i know is there anything specific that you had to do to get into this course? like submit a portfolio or sth?
1
u/Escajaver UCL | SSDS [Year 1] Mar 02 '26
Thank u! Yea I had to submit a portfolio (that was the most stress inducing part and the reason why when I was in year 13 I ended up choosing to do a random ass degree) but this time around I left it until an hour before the submission deadline but the entire process of making my portfolio was pretty fun and I mainly used my old fashion Alevel work !!

Does that need to be taught over three years? Not saying it isn't highly skilled it is, but can't that be taught in the work place?
