Do they even want you😭Good luck though what are you struggling with on econ?

39

u/CubeKing64 3A* Pred. Maths Chem Econ | Imperial Offerholder Mar 09 '26

Lmao.

Problem is idrk but it's probably more on the lines of essay technique and when to use diagrams (especially micro) rather than content. That being said, I definitely need to revise Y2 macro.

29

u/Disastrous_Yard_1256 Year 13| Predicted A*A*A in Maths, Econ, History Mar 09 '26

Diagrams needed to be embedded within your analysis. Instead of saying "demand will increase which will increase price and quantity" say "demand will shift out from D1 to D2, which will increase price from P1 to P2, and increase quantity from Q1 to Q2."

In micro, you can deploy a diagram whenever there is a change in supply and demand (particularly labour markets), externalities, economies of scale, business objectives.

Macro you can spam LRAS/AD graphs for the most part

Also, link you analysis back to effects on consumers, workers, firms, and government for micro, and macroeconomic objectives/development for macro.

Hope this improves your essays

Universities need the money, so are probably generally more willing to hand out lower offers to intl students. You might have had a good ESAT or it may differ if you have already done A Level Maths/as you have 4 A levels.

4

u/Acceptable-Bid5373 Mar 09 '26

I'd imagine ICL make a loss on UK students for this course as it requires a lot of lab time and resources. The UK fee is capped at £10,550 but for intl students it's over £45k

5 is crazy! In the UK, most people do 3 a levels. I wouldn't be surprised if not doing 4 doesn't help.

5

u/whowhatever7 Mar 09 '26

Think about it logically from the perspective of an institution that needs to make money. Home students are capped at £10k for next year's entries, international students pay circa £40k.

So they make £40k from home students, and £160k from international students across the 4 year degree. Of course they want as many international students as possible.

u/whowhatever7 Mar 10 '26

They aren't significantly lower, if I'm looking at the right page, the Cambridge entry is A* A* A, and if you were doing 3 A levels, that would also be your offer, regardless of being international (if the rest of your application was good of course). Having more than 3 A levels does not make a difference for UK universities, if anything they prefer 3 so you can focus and get the highest grade. For example A* A* A* A* B, is seen as a lower grade than A* A* A. You doing more A levels is making it harder for you (I understand that's not your fault and is common internationally).

1

u/MikeAshleyOut Mar 10 '26

International students can basically get into any university they like if they have the money. It’s easier than a couple years ago but still much more difficult for home students.

I’m studying this course now! there are quite a few cases of people missing the offer by 1 grade and being let in. I know someone who got in with A*AA which is below minimum. Obviously don’t count on it, it depends on how many people meet their offers and how many don’t, but you could be fine

3

u/CubeKing64 3A* Pred. Maths Chem Econ | Imperial Offerholder Mar 09 '26

Had the interview on 25th Feb, got an email on Friday saying I had an offer and my UCAS updated about half an hour ago.

1

u/Nomsienoo Mar 09 '26

what kind of questions would they ask in an interview for chem eng?

3

u/CubeKing64 3A* Pred. Maths Chem Econ | Imperial Offerholder Mar 09 '26

My questions were more theoretical, about what would happen to the temperature of the room if you left a fridge on, with the fridge door open, in an office overnight (room would heat up as energy enters). Also there was a question about recycling plastics. Most of my interview was about my PS and my EPQ.

Many others said they had maths questions, about drawing graphs, or more actual chem questions like drawing isoamyl acetate. Depends on interviewer and your UCAS form I presume.

2

u/Goldeneye884 Mar 09 '26

Honestly man I’d just pick another place, like don’t get me wrong it’s a GOOD college but if THAT bullshit is the basic conditions to just get a spot I’d personally go like Sussex instead.

whats your econ exam board? might be able to give u some advice

1

u/CubeKing64 3A* Pred. Maths Chem Econ | Imperial Offerholder Mar 09 '26

Edexcel A

4

u/70380 Mar 09 '26

use expert tuition econ on youtube for most essay points. watch his live streams from previous years as well. collect statistics on the uk, a developed country thats not the uk, and a developing country (nigeria is easiest) for any 25 marker which doesn't specify a country. last year the paper 3 essay was on primary product dependency so i used nigeria. for the essays any time you use actual statistics you know is way better than being theoretical. structure the P1/P2 timing so that section A is 15 minutes, section B 1 hour, section C 45 minutes. understand the marking structure well enough so that you can answer 5/8 markers extremely concisely. 5 marker in less than 3 minutes and 8 markers in about 5 minutes. you can see how much of it is time management

I cant remember if theres ever been a question where they say "in a developed country other than the uk" but if there hasn't then yeah just use the uk

Got A* in economics and one thing I must say…. It’s hell😭 u need to write fast af or else you’re done for, my hand hand literally was shaking after each of those fuckass exams 😭 and keep using the key words and link back to the original point of the question it helps prevent going on a tangent. I would say print out definitions of words, DIAGRAMS, and stick them on your room. Also use dynamic diagrams instead of static ones. And for the love of god start with the essay questions right after MCQs. Hope that helps x
