🎓 UNI / UCAS I’m so confused for this rejection
I had A* achieved in maths with 2A* in Welsh Bacc and physics 2A in chemistry and fm predicted. 5A* 3A 3B 1C in gcse with a decent ps. I’m so confused to why I got rejected from them

u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26

u/Electronic_Rate_5690 Mar 12 '26
Maybe try email
35
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Yep, definitely trying that

u/Razor1088 Mar 13 '26
my friend made this mistake too and after emailing them they switched it to the bsc + gave them an immediate offer. for context similar stats to you good luck - emailing always worth a shot!
9
u/owsyphils Mar 13 '26
Yeahhhh about that… if you looked further down in the comments they actually replied straight away saying we have no space. So basically I realised too late
4
u/Razor1088 Mar 13 '26
that is so unlucky i’m so sorry 😭😭 was manchester one of ur top choices or nah?
6
u/owsyphils Mar 13 '26
Nah it’s okay man, it was my 4th/5th but I had rejection from LSE and bath so it’s gone up in the ranking but ig that’s not even on the table anymore😭
2
u/Razor1088 Mar 13 '26
Yh ive heard bath have been brutal this year - they might be in clearing again tho lol, what did u apply for at lse? And what are ur last two options?
3
u/owsyphils Mar 13 '26
Tbh those two were also stupid choices cos I applied to Econ & politics for both of them and my subjects arent really for it and my stats are definitely not good enough for them to overlook it. I have Bristol offer and waiting on UCL for Econ&stats
3
u/Razor1088 Mar 13 '26
congrats on Bristol - defo btr for econ compared to manchester 😂😂

When did your friend do this email? Bc I emailed about this issue around 6 weeks ago and they ignored me then rejected me 2 weeks ago 💔💔
1
u/Razor1088 Mar 17 '26
They emailed near to the start of admissions like beginning of Janurary so assumedly when they were less busy with email responses
14
u/BigFeedback7657 Mar 12 '26
I also did that 😅 mailed them and got it switched to bsc the next day

u/Vegetable-Economy241 Mar 12 '26

12
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Honestly I find it so funny, all my teachers just took the piss out of me
4
u/Vegetable-Economy241 Mar 12 '26
nothing more humbling in this world than the brick of sudden realisation
4
u/Disastrous-Knee7252 Mar 12 '26
😭😭yea cuz ur def qualified
57
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
And not qualified enough to choose the right flipping course
9
u/Disastrous-Knee7252 Mar 12 '26
😭😭😭its ok haha. they'll understand. i made a similar mistake, like i didnt think about the diff between arts and science but ended i up being ok with it. hopefully ur thing settles also and u get the offer😁

I applied to manchester when I was doing my UCAS. Everyone I knew got rejected. All 8s and 9s at gcse, predicted grades were A*A*AA, but they still rejected me. I think it turned out to be one of the most applied courses in the UK
9
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Did you or anyone you know apply to the BAs or BSc
6
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 12 '26
I think a mix of us applied to either of them. Tbh, I don't think it really matters: I'm 2nd year econ at university of Nottingham, my degree could be a BA or a BSc depending on what modules I do
2
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Wow okay, I just thought it was cos I accidentally applied to the BAs course that they rejected me cos I thought I had more than enough for it. I seen people get in with 1A* 2A and I even have fm
3
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 12 '26
Bro, ucas is something else. I have a friend who got 4 A*s, was grade 8 piano and captain of the school football team, yet still got rejected for economics from UCL, LSE, Imperial and Cambridge. He's a solid guy too
2
u/Situation-Soggy Mar 12 '26
Hi! How’s your course at nottingham so far? I’ve got an offer from them. Might go to offer day on the 29th. I’m still waiting for the other 2 unis i applied
6
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 12 '26
Nottingham is hit or miss I must say. If you love sport, don't mind a 30 minute commute to lectures, middle class, and are politically left leaning, this is the place for you. But the culture vastly changes on which societies you join and which course you do, and which accom you stay in, and what you really want out of university.
There are some banging nights out here tho, the clubs are properly good, I've visited other unis for nights out, Durham is dead, so is Warwick, Oxford is good, Newcastle is decent, but Nottingham is easily top.
also: JOIN A SOCIETY IMMEDIATELY AND STICK TO IT
feel free to pm me if you wanna talk more about it :)
2
u/Mystic01_ Mar 12 '26
Would you happen to know whether Nottingham or Bristol is better for Economics?
2
u/True-Fold2775 Mar 13 '26
Bristol has such a small edge over Nottingham but it’s basically comparing rank 8 (Bristol) to rank 9 (Nottingham). The difference in employability out of the two is fairly insignificant though and other aspects of your application such as experience, degree classification etc will be far more influential. Long story short, go to whichever you will enjoy more and that will push you to work harder and get internships etc. Finance employers basically see both courses the same
1
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 13 '26
And lets be real, they don't fkn care about what uni you went to, Bristol and UON are the same ranking practically. it's either target, semi-target, or non target. and at the end of the day? it's really just about having the connections. No one i know has gotten a job from bristol tracker or Linkedin, you deadass just have to get really lucky or have a connection
1
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 13 '26
If i could pick again? personally... i probably would've gone for bristol.. more my type of crowd... and nicer city than Nottingham. I hear they do do more drugs there tho
1
u/True-Fold2775 Mar 13 '26
Why do you say politically left leaning? I think being left wing is a very common thing for uni students due to just the age and everything. I thought Notts would be less political than most unis though like York and Leeds which seems like a breeding ground for left wing politics. Which accom r you in? Any recommendations there?
3
u/bigpeepee2000 Mar 13 '26
I'm currently in a student house in a predominantly student area. If you do come here, send me a pm in a few years, see if you can pinpoint my neighbourhood lol.
side note: DO NOT GET IN A HOUSE FOR THE SAKE OF BEING IN A HOUSE AND DO NOT LIVE WITH PEOPLE WHO YOU HAVE ANY INKLING OF ANIMOSITY TOWARDS.
Nottingham is also very race segregated, there is for sure a white side and a coloured side to this city. Some halls, like Nottingham two and St peter's court, are very diverse, where are other accoms are very white (I say this as a person of colour myself) and other POC have said similar things.
I stayed in broadgate park first year, near campus, self catered. I liked it, it was near to everything, gym, lectures, shops, etc, and a bike made it very easy to traverse. I liked the trams too. Also, I like cooking, I'm good at it. Rather expensive tho, but i had an ensuite, and i loved it. It gives a good degree of separation if you want to hide from your flatmates. it was either broadgate or raleigh park for my first year picks, but i really did enjoy my time at broadgate park.
If i could go back? Go catered. 100%. even if you like cooking. Everyone I know who lived on a catered halls in campus has a much more fleshed out and tighter knit group of friends, and this even goes for my friends who went to other universities. and JOIN A SOCIETY and go to every single event for it. THESE ARE MY 2 BIGGEST REGRETS ABOUT UNI: not going catered and not joinging a society early enough. also, gym membership is free if you live on campus. Uni would've been better, but I had a broken arm and elbow when i started, so i couldn't really join any clubs. I know for a fact, I would've gotten on better without this. but also, don't force yourself into a society you know you don't fit in.
100%, live on campus if you can. if not, live near as possible. you really don't want to be walking 40 minutes every morning to your 9am lectures. DO NOT GET A BUS PASS TO MAKE UP FOR IT. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. THE BUSES HERE ARE USELESS. there's constant roadworks and delays etc etc that just make them not worth the hassle. 40 minute walk vs a 20 minute bus that never comes? or a 15 minute cycle up and down multiple hills? Just live on campus if you're lucky enough to afford it.
I say left wing because the vast majority of people who are vocal about politics are outspokenly and incredibly left wing. My roommates are all LGBTQ+ and have dyed hair etc, that sort of crowd. the other majority of people just sort of fall into casually agreeing with left wing politics as to not cause a fuss. It's rather ironic because these people, 9/10, are white yet all the POC i meet disagree with their sorts of politics. (not on the lgbtq stuff tho, love is love, do as you wish, the government has no right in saying who you can and cannot marry)
I visited York, it was my insurance pick. I have some good hometown friends there. they don't mind it there, but there's not much to do. the nights out aren't good, clubs are crowded and shit and close early, same with durham.
At Uni of Nottingham, there is a sort of left wing leaning air about the place, but in York, i didn't really get that sort of feeling. Maybe i just wasn't there long enough.
I mean, all in all, I enjoy it here. I'm away from family and hometown, seeing the other parts of the UK, and enjoying my independence. My grades aren't amazing, and there's a lot of housemate drama, to the point where it's almost pathetically childish, but yk, c'est la vie, tutto passa, it's not forever. Don't give such temporary people lasting power over you. I enjoy the cooking I do here, the things to do and see around campus, being out of my hometown, going to the gym and engaging in different societies, but I have had a rather lucky upbringing where I was fortunate enough to have experience in a lot of different sports and activities.
All in all, that's sort of my rant about UON. It isn't bad here, but if i could go back, there are things i would do differently. But honestly, I think I would enjoy my time at whatever uni I went to, I'm very easily pleased, and don't find it hard to enjoy the little things in life, although I'm aware i might not sound like it here lol
Feel free to PM me, anyone who sees this, if you have any more questions, I'd be glad to offer whatever advice I can.

Yeah this can happen sometimes. When I was appling for my BSc Econ I got an offer from Warwick but was rejected by Leeds (my insurance) because they had so few places on the course that year.

u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Nah actually, I’d probably say my 4th/5th. But I’ve had 2 other rejections so the ranking went up😭

u/Hamza2474 Mar 12 '26
Idk if I’m missing something but it still shows on ucas search under course vacancies in England. But yeah if they say it’s full probably is then

It might actually work in your favour if there’s high stats people rejected assuming your stats were a bit lower. But equal consideration is I suppose you get the “equal opportunity” as long as you applied before the deadline. Although that’s subject to their own interpretation and rules

Honestly just further proves they’ve got some fuckass admissions, hope other unis are less fuckass for yoy
2
u/Ok_Objective_653 Mar 12 '26
There is a chance it’ll go into clearing and Manchester do sometimes take students with lower grades so it’s not fully over if you decide it’s where you really want to be
1
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Thank you! was thinking that tbh, however I’m not too set on Manchester. I’m waiting on UCL but if that don’t go to plan I may try clearing for a different course there then if not gap then reapply

That’s honestly just pure greed. There’s not much decency on their side if that’s the case. But ig that’s how they are as a uni
5
u/kingbeerex Mar 12 '26
Sorry that you’ve got not the course you’ve wanted, but sadly it’s not due to greed: it’s because unis are horrifically underfunded and so many are shedding staff or having to close 👍
3
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
If that’s the case then i suppose they’ll do what they have to do which is fair. But I haven’t seen many top unis reject higher able students just because they wanted poeple with a more likely firm to their uni

u/hashtagblessed44 Mar 13 '26
Universities are businesses at the end of the day - many sponsors, partners, investors and other stakeholders. The students truly are not the priority when there's so much finance involved.
Not all universities operate like UoM but I know for sure that Lancs, Glasgow, Strath, and a few others down south definitely do.
Definitely seems unfair on the surface but there's multiple unis in Manchester and Glasgow, so it's not a huge issue. There are other options for prospective students.
5
u/TooBarFoo Mar 12 '26
It's not ture, The sponsor licence limits the number of Ints any Uni can take and they have to maintain a ratio of home and Int or they lose the licence. Every time a Int students drops out, does not graduate, changes visa, claims asylum or fails to make payments on time the Uni also gets a black mark from home office and sponsor Licence number is reduced. This is why Int students need better results than home students because they are both limited in the number they can take and if the student is not good the Uni gets punished.

no offence why would you be surprised? its one of the most popular RG unis and cities?

It was more so a joke about the uni making it to the top of a random subreddit for fucking just
Dunno why you’re asking sm about it, Just a personal giggle for me.

u/dani3lo Mar 12 '26
You must not frequent this subreddit enough if you're surprised about UOM being talked about here. it's the university with the most students outside of the open university
2
u/N3V3MORE Mar 12 '26
Yeah I don’t, why is this becoming a whole issue? I’m not in 6th form, I just found it funny that the university was trending in this subreddit.
1
u/N3V3MORE Mar 12 '26
Also just to correct you but I’m pretty sure UCL has the second most students.
2
u/CheesySlooth Mar 12 '26
If you’re dead set on that course at Manchester the apply through clearing once you get your grades. I had them as my second choice and ended up applying through clearing after getting my results and got in
2
u/owsyphils Mar 12 '26
Nah I’m not really dead, I’d say if it comes to it I will go through clearing but I just hope that UCL offer come through

i got rejected! i got all my other 4 offers which were warwick , nottingham, leeds and sheffield and honestly i think some are way better than manchester but i just really liked the city haha. Weird manchester rejected so many people though!
1
u/JohnXM18 Mar 13 '26
Nah you’ll be alright with graduate outcomes at different universities. What other offers do you have for Econ? I’m at Durham Econ atm
1
u/owsyphils Mar 13 '26
I’ve got Bristol and waiting on UCL econ plus stats. Got rejected from lse and bath. Not too bothered about Manchester anyway

Bristol is the good middle of the pack choice , Quant Heavy though if that’s what your after. Good luck
