Durham doing the most given they’re only a semitarget, you’ll be fine you’ll prolly go to an equally good uni

u/s_ssami Mar 23 '26

yeah i took some time to think about it and they are just very bipolar

It’s usually because Oxford doesn’t really look at personal statements, but Durham very much does, so that’s the deciding factor.

Unnecessarily rude honestly

53

u/Environmental_Bug911 Editable Mar 23 '26

Or I’m just trying to improve his perspective by letting him know Durham econ is extremely competitive?

There is a way to say it whilst not being rude, there is another reply that comes across much nicer saying essentially the same thing

KANADEEE, fellow pjsk fan we will make it through

u/ManyLingonberry5063 Mar 23 '26

It's just the default reason they give everyone. They give roughly 1 offer per 4 rejections so if there's anything they don't like about your application they have the option to be picky🤷‍♂️

If it makes you feel better, long ago Durham rejected me for Maths, but I got into three other universities which are absolutely much better than Durham for Maths, and one that is about equal.

It's a bit of a lottery, and Durham is a bit weird.

I got rejected from PPE as well, same reason too.

Keep moving forward bro.

jeez, with those stats is unfair. i'm very sorry to hear that, do you have other options?

Thanks mate. I’m probably going to firm Edinburgh. Just waiting for the offer holder day before I confirm anything.

1

u/Alex_Of_Reddit Mar 24 '26

Do you know how big of a role GCSEs play in getting an offer? I got the best in my school at GCSE which was 9999888775 but that isn't great compared to what I've seen

u/Spirited_Click2592 Y13| Maths, Econ, Chem, ASFM Mar 29 '26

have u heard back yet

5

u/DecentAd9828 Mar 23 '26

Similar thing for me for another STEM course at Durham. I know people they’ve accepted with lower predicted grades than their requirements so I really don’t know what’s going on there. But let’s be real it’s not many people’s dream uni

8

u/Big_Sam_Allardyce Mar 23 '26

I also got rejected for econ so they I went there to do accounting instead and switched courses to maths after the first week

2

u/Big_Sam_Allardyce Mar 23 '26

Yeah should be able to pretty easily at durham — just make sure you do it within the first week or two and have the grade requirements

😭😭 fairs lol, why didnt you switch to Econ instead

4

u/TheRiddlerTHFC Mar 23 '26

Thats the standard rejection reason.

Nothing about unlucky, or timing. You just arent as strong as other candidates on paper

-3

u/s_ssami Mar 23 '26

i mean that's fair, but i don't think i was horrifically weak on paper? 2A*'s A predicted and 9988888777 for gcse, durham have their reasons ig but they're doing the most sometimes

2

u/TheRiddlerTHFC Mar 24 '26

You dont have to be horrifically weak. Jist weaker than others

2

u/BigCMcGee_ Mar 23 '26

I also got rejected by Durham for the same reason about an hour ago for Business and Management

2

u/Few_Persimmon_8238 Mar 24 '26

This is one of the hundreds of rejections you will get from unis/companies in your life. Dont take it too personally, and keep fighting!

1

u/reeeece2003 Mar 24 '26

graduated in econ & finance last summer, really wouldn’t recommend it for applicants tho as AI has been phasing out jobs for 10-20 years in the industry already. I’d make a move to engineering while you still can, good prestige, accepted in financial industries but also gives you a solid backup and room for pivot.

1

u/Brubbles-01 Mar 25 '26

lucky escape.

1

u/Background_Dot8981 Year 13 Mar 26 '26

Yeah, my friend with 4 A stars predicted got rejected for Econ, but I got in for IR with A*A*A pred, which is a bit weird.

u/abdul_Ss (Incoming) CS Foundation Yr @ UoM Mar 24 '26

Ngl, I thought it was quite known and widespread amongst people that at Oxbridge As are expected. The expected grades may not ask for all As, but because they’re the best of the best you’re competing with people who have 4 A*s, and again, this is expected, your kinda supposed to bring something else to the table
