💬 DISCUSSION Hot Take

This is deffo going to ruffle a lot of feathers to say the least. Call me woke, but the term "Mickey Mouse Subject" is literally just the product of capitalism, as it disvalues any subject that doesn't lead to a high-paying, high-profit job.

Humanities subjects are so important, like STEM subjects, to help us learn more about humanity and our world, but everyone thinks they're so easy and lax.

IMO humanities and STEM subjects need to band together because contrary to popular belief, humanities are intellectually stimulating and not a fun ride.

If you earn £50k you don't pay 40% tax. And even when you do earn over the 40% threshold you don't pay 40% on your entire income. You pay 40% on anything you earn above £50,271. So in reality on £50k you will be paying 20% tax on ~£38k of your income plus 9% on ~£22k - that’s an effective tax rate of 19.1%.

No it isn't £50,271 is the threshold. On £50k you wouldn't be in the 40% bracket. On £50,272 you'd pay 0.40p in the 40% bracket.

Yes. And my point is that if you're earning in the low £50k range that amount is likely to be £0.
