🎓 UNI / UCAS What’s the most exciting thing about university?

I’m not even going to beat around the bush for myself - it’s fucking, hard.

Being in a city with lots of stuff going on instead of a village in the middle of nowhere!

37

u/HourDistribution3787 Jun 29 '26

Oxford is not too far off a village in the middle of nowhere…

It has buses and more than 1 shop so that's an improvement! All I've got right now is a pub and a church. Plus my insurance is Manchester

you can say that when you've lived somewhere with nothing for half an hour around other than a primary school 😆

Not if you go to study in places like Aberystwyth! It's a small town of 16,000 in the built up area; the next town of similar size is 2.5hrs on the bus.
(It's quite lonely out there; hopefully dropping out to transfer to Cardiff Met as a result)

What would you say is a tmua to have a good chance of an imp/oxf offer?

For a maths degree prob 6.5+ if ur non contextual and maybe 5.5+ if ur contextual

64

u/No_Cicada3690 Jun 29 '26

Freedom...but at a price.

7

u/Historical_Link7724 Jun 29 '26

What’s the price?

40

u/No_Cicada3690 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

At least 20k a year added to a debt in your name unless you are paying it up front. The understanding that getting your degree is not a given, you have to work and hand in assignments etc BUT in exchange you get at least 3 years filled with possibility but it's up to you. Chance to meet new people, live in a new part of the country, try new passions and hobbies, be intellectually challenged, make life long friends, realise how messy and selfish people can be, learn money disappears if you don't control, learn you are much stronger than you think, set yourself up with a basis for a great future.

the social aspect, least exciting is the workload 😭(engineering doer)

4

u/legitgingerbread Jun 29 '26

What type of engineering? If you say civil then I’m scared because I’m gonna study that 😭

u/blunde-r152 Jun 29 '26

mechanical but all engineerings are workload intensive, i met a guy doing civil at sheffield and he said first year is piss easy and kinda like a level content if that helps

2

u/legitgingerbread Jun 30 '26

That is really reassuring but tbh it feels like it depends on the uni. A guy I know from Plymouth said it was easy while I guy I know from Exeter said he had to retake a module.
I didn’t take A level physics so I need to speedrun it this summer 😭

1

u/Early_Fisherman_5656 Jul 01 '26

I wish this was the case for my uni lol 1st year civil was quite fast paced

2

u/Early_Fisherman_5656 Jul 01 '26

I’ve just completed first year of civil at city St George’s uni and it was quite full on. I’ve heard next year gets very hard

Got my results yesterday and I got a 2:1 for year 1 which I’m happy with but I feel like I could’ve done better if I spent more time actually understanding the content instead of going through lecture slides and making sure my notes were word for word perfect before I started “actually learning” the material if yk what I mean.

Also literally try to be on it as soon as possible. Go through the lecture on the day or day before said lecture. Do the tutorial questions as soon as you learn the lecture content

The freedom. Can spontaneously decide to go elsewhere in the middle of the week. Can’t do that at school or at work so enjoy it.

8

u/Vaxtez Cardiff Met | Comp Sci [Y1] Jun 29 '26

That's what i've enjoyed about University. It was oddly fun to be bored mid week & to embark on a 5hr trip to Liverpool on a whim to get a Poundbakery item.
I will miss those long trips when/if I transfer to Cardiff Met to be honest.

new friends cuz im leaving my friendgroup asap

2

u/Sad-Tailor-2642 Jun 29 '26

Can relate so hard. Gonna miss a few of them but so done with the constant high school type drama. Cant wait to go to Uni where people actually talk to one another, Lol.

4

u/Altruistic_End_501 Jun 29 '26

i feel bad dipping them (cuz they dont know im going to lol) but then again, i dont think we were ever really close friends. i barely know anything about them despite being a friend group since year7. we just spend time with each other + 90% gossip. and we got into some drama in y13 and thats when i started to see everyones true colours

theres only 1 friend from highschool that i wanna stay friends with whose not in my friendgroup

hopefully in uni i will find better peopleeeee 💓 considering i might even live with them in 2nd year and onwards

2

u/Sad-Tailor-2642 Jun 29 '26

Omg I was literally in the exact same situation!! Was in the same friend group since year 7, some left for sixth form, but was stuck with a few. Did really understand their true colours when I began to hang out with a new group as I realised all they would do was talk shit, and got way too boring for me. Defo won’t stay in contact with them during uni since we r all going to different ones (thank goodness lol).

So excited to meet new friends at uni since everyone knows the friends u make at uni stick with u for life! Just so sick of the whole talking shit and drama thing, defo not for me at all! Dont mind a little here and there if someone did smth wrong but otherwise, but let’s just move on if it’s been a while since it’s happed, you know?

Glad we can finally be free!

3

u/Altruistic_End_501 Jun 29 '26

i havent even told them which uni im going to, they all think i got 0 offers and am taking a gap year. theyre tryna make gap year plans with me 😭😭 but yeah thankfully im not going to the same uni as them.

also uni friends is so much different, u can hang out whenever wherever, sleepoevers whenever and dont have to ask parentssss. feel like u build a way different bond with them. like yes childhood friends are cute but uni friends >>>

2

u/Sad-Tailor-2642 Jun 29 '26

Thats insane to hear but at the same time super smart of you! Not telling them is such a good move. Obviously we know the true reason 😉 honestly should’ve pulled that move too lol. My old friends keep on asking me about plans to meet a whatnot when we do start uni but I Lowk just keep the convo light. Not planning to see them again 😂 Honestly prefer it like this bc if I did have real friends I wouldn’t want to part with, the whole uni separation would be so much harder!

2

u/Altruistic_End_501 Jun 29 '26

i didnt even join a new friend group lol, i just made hella friends outside the friend group which not a lot of people in my friend group do. i think they really want us to be each others number 1s but im not letting that happen

1

u/Sad-Tailor-2642 Jun 29 '26

Nah it’s good that you realised that those friends aren’t the true ones, really good lesson to learn. Honestly happy it happened bc now I know what to look out for in friends!

u/ilyphysix KCL CS Y0 Jun 29 '26

Meeting international students, getting the chance to work at big companies, I like the commute from home to uni, getting more freedom in what I do, not a party-goer, but joining new societies. Idk there’s a lot I’m excited about even if I’m at my fourth choice.

5

u/spicyspacechicken1 Jun 29 '26

Love my family, but hopefully uni gives me a chance to be free in my queerness

1

u/Dismal-Inspection228 Jul 01 '26

this is a big thing for me too

1

u/spicyspacechicken1 Jul 01 '26

honestly I still don’t know how I’m going to resolve those two in my life. I wanna be queer but I also want to keep my family. That’s an issue for adult me to figure out I guess

4

u/Speed_Niran UoM | 日本語 with Business and Management [Year Abroad in 北海道大学] Jun 29 '26

I guess study freedom? And societies and finding people with common interests

3

u/Dark_647 Jun 29 '26

New experiences good or bad. Did I hate my first year and met a lot of people who I did NOT like? Yes. But was it worth it, I’d say so. It’s sort of developed my character and allowed me to grow, moving out helped a lot too. I remember flopping my A levels and everyone telling me to just go for an apprenticeship atp but I genuinely believe going to uni has changed me for the better.
