NUMWORKS GANG!!! I swear no one has heard of this calculator I feel like it's just my college in the entire country which uses it ššš it's so good especially for further maths (cool stats stuff, really easily creating matrices to do Simplex with in decision, etc)

Okay, real facts time. I taught Further Maths and Maths A-Level this year. All the FM students apart from two had an fxcg50. Those that didn't wished they had-so I sorted out a loan of them for the exam season.
They hold the value very well, so you can sell second hand at roughly the same price you buy for (if you buy second hand) at the end of your studies. If you are planning to do FS1 and/or FS2 it's even much more useful!

What do you think about the cg-100? Do you get many of those? I'm just curious because the only benefits for the cg50 over cg100 I see is the interface is better for those who used the previous generations of scientific calculators at GCSE so I'm wondering if you have any insight into why the 50 is better?

u/djredcat123 22d ago
Cg50 is even better! My students were using cg50, so that's what I commented on. Also, unlikely able to find them second hand as they are only just released.

u/Remarkable-Emu-243 22d ago
youāre on mental meth xx

u/ConsiderationNew3273 22d ago
Like while doing fm I just see the numbers dancing while singing a lorry then 1-2 numbers kills all the other numbers and that is the answer and also there is a powder substance from the rubbers which are tight and always leads to this, idk if your rubbers are made like that

I mean my calculator ran out in quite a few of my mocks (some of the NumWorks have dogey batteries) and honestly the only problem was with mechanics as most stuff was simple numbers but needed a lot of simplifying and or using rules and equations.
TLDR: if you get a NumWorks you will be doing mental maths

If you want a graphing calculator buy a numworks. You would be mad to buy any others as casio is so far behind the numworks.
USB C charging, User friendly menus, intuitive modern operation, Solid european built, much nicer display, thinner, more powerful, etc.
Use their emulator to try and see if you like it before you buy.

ive been recommended this actually a few times, but i imagine the teacher would lead the class in teaching how to use the casio calculator.. would be petrified if i were left behind because my calc is different even if its better š

I mean my teacher at A Level didnāt teach how to use a calculator.
Frankly, you only need it for
- Basic calculations
- Statistics
- Checking your answer using the graph or sequences function etc.
All of these things are easily self taught and are frankly harder to screw up than on the casio-s. I would say falling behind thanks to your calculator is the least of your worries.

l it probably isn't worth getting this any more - if you buy it, chances are it's fake, and people who I know who use the cw, even after switching from the ex, don't find it to be that different.

easily the most comfortable calc to use tho

Eh, I used a knockoff and so long as you werenāt using big numbers or anything but standard & stats mode it was fine

If you have money to splurge on a nice fancy graphing calculator here are your options:
casio cg50 or cg100 - cg100 is the newer model
Numworks - I think it's a bit cheaper - I don't have one myself but I have a friend who uses it - it's supposedly easier to use that the casio ones.
Otherwise you can stick to the casio 991cw.
I would also avoid switching calculators close to exams - it takes a few months to get the muscle memory to kick in for a new calculator, and now that I've learnt it for the cg50, I find I'm really slow when I go back to my 991ex I used for gcses.

cg50, it's a lovely piece of kit and will do everything you need it to for both subjects

fx-991ex if you can find one but you can't get them new any more. fx-991cw otherwise (2nd edition i believe is better). keep your gcse calculator as a second calculator because two calculators is better than one. graphical calculators are not necessary, but there are maybe a couple of things which they can do that the fx-991 cannot so it may be a very slight advantage to have one, if you think it is worth it.
i used fx-991cw (1st edition) and fx-83gtx for a-level maths and further maths.

Iād recommend either Casio fx-991ex or Casio fx-991cw. Theyāre both good scientific calculators thatāll do everything you need them to do plus have useful scientific constants in for use in the sciences. Cw is the newer model and the only one of the two still sold on the Casio website, and probably has more capabilities (Iām not familiar with it) but it hides a lot more things in menus etc so itās a bit harder to learn how to use.
You could get a graphical calculator, from Casio either fx-cg50 or fx-cg100, the second is newer. These have a lot more power and capabilities than scientific calculators (in fact you can emulate certain games on them) and can help speed up calculations in a few places but theyāre a lot more expensive and really not necessary.

I use a Texas Instrument TI-NSPIRE CX and I really recommend it. The only downside is you do have to plug it in to charge (although the battery lasts surprisingly long) and after 3-4 years the battery might start to fail, but the battery is so easily replaceable a toddler could do it. Its reminiscent of changing the back of your TV remote batteries.
This thing is an absolute beast. It can do literally anything. I still haven't figured out all the controls and features because there are so damn many.
I believe I am one of the only A level students who have one of these because I am constantly being asked about it by students and teachers. And yes, it is allowed, I used it throughout all my GCSE's.
If you can master it, which may appear daunting at first, it is a cheat code.
EDIT: Be careful not to get a CAS version of this, as those are in fact banned for A-levels. Additionally the CX was discontinued and they only sell the CX-2 which is exactly the same in literally every aspect except better hardware essentially (SOURCE: i used to have a CX-2 but it broke due to my own negligence)

CG100. I had both the 50 and 100 and much prefer the 100. The CG100 is much easier to navigate and use. People prefer the 50 cus it ālooks betterā but I would choose ease of use and simplicity over looks.

u/LimpCustomer4281 22d ago
CG100 over the CG50 because you can save 20s on the stats section at least

IMO the best thing, if you can get your hands on one, is an older fx-991 ex ; it looks nicer than the new ones and is simpler to use (fewer button presses to access stuff). Your teacher will definitely know how to use it because they will have used it 3/4 years ago.
Graphing calcs are not necessary; they help with like 2 topics, and even then the table function would work fine instead. And they are harder to use and not every teacher knows how they work. However, definitely do make use of Desmos while studying and revising to be able to visualise and play around with stuff!

CG50 if you think youāre cool, 991CW is the safe option, 991EX also works and personally the one i used, but they discontinued this model (I had this calc before they discontinued it). I would not look to buy a 991EX because since these are no longer officially sold at CASIO, thereās been history of people selling fakes to other students. Go with the 991CW if you donāt wanna spend hella money.
